Runyon a fit for Texans?

Im surprised no one has mentioned anything about this but according to kffl.com the Texans are a POSSIBLE SUITOR for OT J. Runyon....any thoughts on the "possibilities" or the lack there of??? They mention he owns a house here in Houston, but he also owns an arena football team in SD...well thats the rumors anyways....any thoughts on his age/production/fit??

Think Runyon is too old for us ; probably wants too much money. Shaeffer from Falcons ;better fit ...played in zone blocking scheme...only 25,26 years old.

fair enough...lately all of these possible intersts seem to be just that...rumors. It seems to me that kffl just put us as possible suitors due to the fact that he already owns a house, just like they have SD as a possible suitor, and I believe another team or two due to little circumstances....I hate it when they just ASSume stuff like that rather than factual leaks of interst.:spy:

It depends. If he's being brought in as a mentor to D'Brick, then he'd be a good fit.

Yeah but who's got the extra cash just laying around to bring in a guy like Runyon just for his "mentoring" skills?

I know that comes to mind when we're talking about an older player but man, the rosters would have to go up to 93 players to hold all of the mentors that get mentioned on our board in any given year. I think it's very, very rare that anyone outside of the QB position gets a spot on a roster just because of the effect they could have on a younger player. My gut feeling is that it probably happens to QB's less than we think.

This is BS. Runyan is a RT, the Texans have too much money used in Todd Wade and another capable RT in Seth Wand to go after a RT that would command the type of money Runyan will get on the open market. I do not think there is any validity to this story, the source is simply stating that the Texans "might" be interest in basically any lineman available b/c of our past problems.

Runyan's skills have been declining for a few years and isn't going to get any better, so I say stay away.

I would like to take back my earlier comments, I have heard from a couple of people the Texans are interested in Runyan for the right price. The team is not sure if it would use him on the right or left side. A lot will depend on what he commands on the open market, but expect him to at least make a visit to H-town.

He is just an older version of Todd Wade.
Maybe, but in his prime, Runyan was atlot better then Wade. I agree with the earlier post about his skills declining in recent years.

i think right now anyone who is a proven lineman is going to get a look at by the texans...that doesn't mean we're going to sign him but right now after going 2-14 who are we to tell any good o-lineman that they don't fit our system...we need all the o-line help we can get

Actually...No I dont like Runyan...He didnt play a single game last year I dont think because of injuries. Plus because he played for the eagles he will be expecting alot of money from us. The guy is injury prone 32 and not that great. Pass on him!

Any hope we can find a way to get in the running for this guy? Word has it the Eagles and the Jets are battling it out for him. With the Eagles circling the drain and the Jets being the AFC East version of the Texans, why cant we get in the running for him. He was actually drafted by the Houston Oilers if you can believe that. He only has a few years left in the tank but I would rather get a proven OL to help solidify this line because as it sits now, the line is going to be the same if not worse than last year.

Offseason Goals for Casserley:
Improve QB Situation: Casserley resigns Carr for huge money
Improve OL Situation: Casserley reups with 4/5 of last years OL embarassment (aka sign scrubs)
Improve WR Situation: Sign scrubs
Improve Defense: Overpay for a run stopping DE, sign some scrubs and do nothing else.

Looks like Casserley is on par for another 'brilliant' offseason. Kudos to you Cass you have truly outdone yourself this year. Here is to you being a ditch digger after you are fired halfway through the embarassment that will be next year. *cheers to you Cass*

Most fans think that the offseason has gone pretty well and that the signings so far havent been for scrubs...aka Walter and Putzier...the only possible overpayment may be for Weaver but he is young and will be great against the run...as for Runyan I dont know if he is a fit for this scheme...and this topic could have been in the other Runyan thread that is directly below this one

So the Texans should enter the market for a player who already has two serious suitors? I guess that would pave the way for the 'Casserly overpaid that POS' thread next summer.

Free agency isn't over. The team is headed in the right direction, which started with canning Capers and landing Kubiak. Every day I pull up this board and I see yet another thread about the team pursuing another vet lineman. Patience is a virtue, unless you're a virtual GM who believes that it's oh so easy to make things happen. Provided you have the magic beads, I suppose that is true.

I think the title of your post is about the close you are going to get. Don't want him, he wouldn't fit, so keep dreaming... :pigfly:

And I am with Dunta_23, our off season has been going along nicely

didnt see the runyan thread. did a search and the poster misspelled his name so I didnt see one with his name attached. My apologies. Moderator, please moderate at your leisure.

p.s. I like the Putzier signing. That being said, I chalk that up to Kubes being a competent head coach and getting Putzier's door open. Thank goodness that Cass didnt offend anyone and got the deal done.

Thanks,

Huh ! Why on earth would we want to get into a bidding war we'd have little
chance of winning for an NFL relic ?

Yes we should enter the market for Runyan, what use is cap space and being a high revenue team if we dont use it. The reason there are two serious suitors is because he is a valued Free Agent and could help any team in the NFL. Would we have to overpay? Yes, such is the price of being 2-14, but at least he is proven championship-caliber starter. You get what you pay for and until we stop perusing Free Agents like we are shopping for bargains at the swap meet we will continue to reap what we sow....which means Wades, Weigerts, Brueners, Macks.

Robaire was a good signing last year. Where is our Robaire this year? Weaver? come on now. I am not saying I dont like the signing but if you are counting on Weaver to greatly improve the 31st ranked NFL defense then I think you may be drinking Battle Red Kool Aid. Just my opinion, and I could be wrong.....but dont hold your breath.

Actually, I am counting on him to help improve the defense. That's what he's getting paid to do.
He may only help to improve us to 29 or 30, but he should help us some.

So, in other words, if Doug from the Woodlands were GM, he would sign nothing but pro-bowl FA's, at vet min salaries, and every draft pick would be all-pro, and we would all have a jolly good time at the SB every year. :redtowel:

What a load of crap.

Oh and by the way, you sound like the life of the party. I think I would be commiting suicide by the end of the night. I would be so depressed with your upbeat cheery attitude. Rock on. :ok:

Ugh no signing him would be on par with signing Victor Riley.

Ok, Dude isn't Victor Riley... but he isn't a young horse that we need to build a cohesive line out of for the next four plus years.

Pass on Runyan. Go with a little more youth.

Wasnt saying he was Victor Riley, but it would be an out of place signing like riley was for the O line. It would be like bringing your grandparents to a keg party. sure they can prolly hang at the beginning but they wont last as long as the younger partiers

I think we should jump in. We can drive the price up for someone else like people have done to us for years!

You can try and put words in my mouth if you want but the bottom line is this. We keep saying that our Offensive Line is why Carr has been such a joke as our 'franchise' QB. Well then why in the hell does Cass not improve the Offensive Line? He resigned last years OL, does he expect them to wake up and all of a sudden not be an embarassment?

You can say what you want but I guarantee you one thing. If I was GM, I would have addressed the Offensive Line situation. I guess that makes me a moron considering all the Carr people constantly point to the OL as the root of all evil in the world. i am sorry that signing 4/5 of last years Offensive Line doesnt make me smile inside. It just sets up another year of excuses by Carr and his legion of fans, so I am sure that makes everyone happy eh?

whatever, I try and post on how Casserley has failed to address the Offensive Line and I get flamed for it. I guess the Offensive Line is somehow magically no longer a problem....I would put posters such as you in your place but I respect my fellow posters no matter how delusional they are

Before you throw Cass under the bus you should know ALL of the moves we've made so far were DIRECT REQUESTS from Kubiak

Kubiak wanted Weaver (who btw was a excellent signing if you know anything about the 4-3, does anybody remember how bad we sucked at stopping the run) Kubiak wanted him Cass made it happen

Kubiak wanted Sage and felt he would be a good back up in his system, again Kubiak wanted him Cass made it happen.

Kubiak wanted Cook, who he felt was the type of FB that he needed to run his system, again Kubiak wanted him, Cass made it happen.

Kubiak wanted Walter, who will provide at the very least excellent depth on a team starving for depth at that position and could prosper into a great redzone target with his size. Kubiak wanted him Cass made it happen

and I don't have to tell you about the TE, that one's pretty obvious.

So again these aren't Charlie's moves they are the moves of our new Head Coach who is trying to get players who he feels he needs to run his system that he is going to install in Houston, a system that you nor me no nothing about, so give it a chance to play out on the field.

I also believe Kubiaks system is going to be a little different then Denver's. Coaches always take a system that they've learned under their head coach and then alter it slightly in some way and with Sherman on board he could be running a Green Bay/Denver Hybrid, so again lets just let this thing play out.

Since being signed as a free agent from Tenn in 2000,Jon Runyan has started 96 straight games for the Eagles. In other words, he has never missed a game. From the Philadelphia eagles web site, Jon Runyan profile.

Is free agency over? Last time I checked it wasn't. It's also not like the Texans haven't been linked to having interest in every other free agent O-lineman out there.

In any pro sport, starting the first day of free agency, if not before (through um, 'backchannels'), teams are expressing interest in various free agents. When they can talk to their agents, they do. The Texans probably had a list of at least 50 free agents who they called on the 1st day of free agency.

As for Weaver, the team needed help against the run. So they got a run-stuffing DE. What's the prob here?

Beyond this, there is a little thing called the salary cap and a larger thing called the business. They have to work within both.

Flanagan, Neal, Ashworth, McKinney. Those are 4 linemen off the top of my head that they've had visits with or are supposed to. And those are 4 that are known publicly. Runyan might not have any desire to play for the Texans whatsoever. His asking price might be $60 mil with $15 mil guaranteed. We don't know. Geez, look at the title of this thread: "Dreaming about Runyan". That sums it up perfectly.

As for the "re-signing 4/5ths of the line" complaint...

They've given no indication that they have stopped there. Clearly they are looking for a center. Adding a free agent center and moving McKinney to guard would be a great 1st step, and probably not the last, as they have been talking to any number of guards in free agency.

Then there are other factors, such as having a coaching staff now that actually knows a thing or two about building a nice offensive line.

If I didn't have such an interest, I'd get off the offseason doom and gloom roller coaster in here and tune in come September. Probably be a lot more enjoyable seeing the finished product than reading 20 "We're Doomed" or "S.O.S. Same Old *****" threads every day.

Agreed...Kubes is the calling the shots, lets give it some time...

Do we now throw Larry Allen into the mix? He can certainly be flown down from Dallas while he is getting his gear together! Dallas refused to pay his $2 million bonus for this year and avoided a $3.5 million hit against next year's cap. He is a free agent now.

At 6-3 325 pounds Allen is WAY to large and immobile to be a guard in Kubiak's zone scheme.

The Jets also recouped $8.3 million in salary-cap money - the amount of Abraham's franchise tender - allowing them to be aggressive in the second wave of free agency. As of last night, they were deep into negotiations with right tackle Jon Runyan, who spent most of the day meeting with Jets officials at Hofstra. The Eagles are interested in re-signing Runyan; a decision could come today.

As for draft possibilities, Tannenbaum refused to tip his hand (what a surprise), saying only that he won't rule out the possibility of trading up - or down - from the fourth spot. At No. 4, they could have a choice of Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler, Virginia tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams. If they trade up, it probably would be for Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart.
