Why Do We Dislike Spencer Tilman?

1) "Like smoke through a keyhole"
2) "One of those pencil neck receivers coming down on special teams"
3) "He read him like a computer"

:kubepalm:

Right but he did win a SB with the 49ers.
Anyway I really don't know why some folks dislike him ? He's better than some announcers but also worse than some others.

Not that I dislike him. I just think he tries to out talk his audience.

We must be getting old. I can remember watching football with my father in law. He was well into his 70's and had played and coached college ball all his career - (Shane Lechler's grandfather was his first QB). Some color analyst would be waxing eloquent, (as does Spencer), and he'd get so mad, that he would mute the sound. Of course, I'd poke at him awhile. He get up and leave, and come back in 5 or 10 minutes to watch some more. It was hilarious. He knew so much that they just aggravated him. Those were great times.

My ol man is 74 and will watch a damn football game in mute, because "I can't stand them sumb****es thinkin they know everything!" I tell him I won't watch the game with him unless there is sound. He relents and then promptly falls asleep! Hilarious!

Actually I didn't mind him, however living here I don't get to see him anymore. I now get Rhonde Barber, who BTW, isn't bad as the "homer" former player.

Mine is 83 and hates Tillman with a passion. Dad loves language (prefers Latin mass) and can't stand how he butchers English in attempts to force-fit an explanation.

I despise the tier-3/4 announcers from CBS, but Spencer makes me long for them before pre-season is over.

i dont know him to dislike him....but he tires to hard.........like you can tell thats not how he really talks...That's why you hear those "like smoke through a keyhole" Tillman-isms so much. Dude looks for those opportunites where he can go on auto pilot and drop those gems. He can't just observe the game as its happening & talk off the cuff about it. If he tries that he winds up saying something that doesn't quite make sense like Emmitt Smith did with his "debacled" comment when he tried his hand at it a few years ago.

Being honest, I actually am quite accustomed to hearing Spencer on Texans preseason games. I would feel that Texans preseason TV broadcasts won't be the same without his commentary. I feel the same way about Mark Vandermeer doing radio broadcasts.

That ridiculous bullshit he was saying when Swanson ran for the touchdown last night was classic Spencer Tillman and why the man shouldn't be anywhere near a microphone. Something about a microwave oven and putting something in his hip pocket. It was just idiotic babbling which is pretty much what sports broadcasting at its worst is all about. Some idiot blurting out memorized catch-phrases while the guy next to him describes what is exactly happening.

It makes a good color-commentator all the more appreciated.

Always felt that way about Worrell for the Rockets. He brought literally nothing to the table, but I was so used to him and Calvin. Tillman is just awful though. Dude should be selling cars.

I don't dislike Tillman. However, his commentary is just annoying. Nothing wrong with having a great vocabulary. His problem is he while a play is developing on the field, he wants to use every synonym in the thesaurus to describe the play and it often doesn't sound right or doesn't make any sense. After a while, it just gets annoying.

He doesn't have a great vocabulary. He pretends he does. It comes across as the real world version of the skit the Wayans brothers used to do on In Living Color.

I find him and his made-up Astroturf colloquialisms entertaining as hell. He casually peppers them in like he picked them up from the imaginary coaching circles he hangs out in. My preseason tradition wouldn't be complete without them and the bourbon shots they induce. I hope he sticks in our hip pocket for years to come and never gets an apple and a road map.

Shine on you crazy Spencer. Stay linear and hit the haters like they owe you money.

Not bad.
If Tillman gets sick you could sit in.
LoL

I don’t dislike him. I just think he’s bad at commentating.

^^^^
This

He's terrible at his job.

Says things that make you think he's intelligent, but he's really not.

I guess he's smarter than I give him credit for, avg RB that somehow got a career in the media.

What do y'all expect during preseason, Al Michaels?

I've been listening to some of the other local-yokel broadcasts during the preseason games and, believe it or not, there are worse than Tillman out there.

I'm not giving Tillman a pass, just saying I've heard worse.

Right. Tillman isn't horrible, it's just his overuse of colloquialisms. He's got good football knowledge, he just doesn't translate it well, or tries to be too cute in doing so.

I too, have had the unfortunate pleasure of listening to other teams broadcasts. In the Texans/Chiefs game, they never talked about the Texans and barely talked about what was going on in the game.

But it's just pre-season and these guys don't typically do this, though I think Tillman does college games, or used to. But just wait until we get Texans hater Rich Gannon for the games that matter.

I watched the Kansas City game with their local broadcasters and about 3/4 way thru the game they forgot a football game was being played and were talking about Soccer was coming to KC. They were horrible.

I made a similar thread a year or two ago …. FFS.

I cant stand listening to Spencer , really wish the team or the network , whoever's making that decision , would go in another direction cause that dude is just annoying.

I'd fire him with bad intentionality.

He literally has zero skills for the job. Even his football knowledge is dreadful, which is what you would think his strength would be.

He routinely gives inaccurate information during live action and even during replays, he misdiagnoses coverages and play calls, points out a guy for a mistake when that guy was actually doing his job and the guy Spencer is praising is actually the one in the wrong spot, etc. It goes on and on.

Yeah, the guy actually thought Dee Virgin was having a "player of the game" type of performance against the Cowboys.

I kept saying "What the hell is he watching?"

Yeah , like he was in on every play …. having such a great game but didn't realize the guy was in on every play because the opposition was targeting him .… almost impossible not to be in on the play when they are going at you because you are the weakest link.

I like him on Inside the Game. He's got a solid football I.Q. and has some good general insight into the league. And, he's not a complete homer that's scared to call out the front office when required.

I do not watch a lot of preseason to get bored with him, tho'. Once the starters are done, I'm out. Just not interested in practice football these days.

I'll take him over Chris Collingsworth any day.

I can't stand Collingsworth..he makes my ears bleed and I feel my football IQ dropping just listening to him speak. He says the most obvious **** that should just be implied. When he's the color commentator on a broadcast it's like listening to Captain Obvious from Hotels.com calling the game.

At least we don't have to listen to Aikman and Joe buck every week. Idk why, but I can't stand their commentary

I'm with you. Only two chances to hear them this year and we won't get em. Cowboys game is NBC and FOX won't send them to Houston for Texans/Giants. Not with Dallas/Seattle in the 3:15 kickoff slot.

Aikman doesn't bother me, but Joe Buck annoys the hell out of me for some reason. I know he's good at his job and has a great voice for play by play, but he just annoys me to no end though..

Maybe it's because every time I see this guy, he's either calling a Cowboys game or a Yankees/Red Sox game.
