Jet Fan here, need opinions. (john Abraham)

First off, you guys getting bored? With the number one pick being decided months ago, Its prob alittle boring--But will be worth it when August and Septembe come around.

I came here to see your opinions on our John Abraham situation.

I saw a thread that mentioned it that posted falso data about the Jets salary cap. Well maybe not false, but old. The Jets are right now 7m over the cap including John Abraham. Not a big deal, but the point is the Jets are not going to deal him unless they get decent value.

Abraham has been to three pro bowls, had a great season, and really if anyone here has watched him he is a top 5 4-3 DE.

Now myself and other Jet fans obviously wanted a mid first rounder, but due to the strength of the draft, and his contract, I believe it will be a late first rounder, or high second rounder.

Looking at potential draft picks, The cheifs are alittle high but still considerable, the Falcons I dont think will deal a first rounder, The Redskins have no cap room or first round pick,

And Lastly that leaves the Detroit Lions newly running a prefect scheme for John, and you guys now running a 4-3 with no strongside DE. I have seen some of your post, and you guys need a DE bad. (As bad as we need a Qb lol)

Anyway, what do you guys think the chances are of you guys trading your second round pick straight up for Abraham? Or where do you think his value is?

And please no silly responces like some other guy in the other thread ---"I value John Abraham as a 4th to 5th round pick", I almost died laughing lol. Thats like us telling you well give you a 4th for Dunta lol.

Just putting it out there again, John is a 3 time Pro Bowler, this will be only his second contract in NFL(Rookie then Franchised), only 27, coming off a 12 sack season with 6ff*. The asterisk is to just remind you we probably had a lead for 30m the entire year, team rarely passed on us, and when they did Abraham was right there.

Oh yeah, Did I mention he has 4.38 speed? Faster then Peppers or Jason Taylor. If you guys play on Turf(i think?), this guy would be ridiculous!

And if hes that good why would we trade him? I dont friggin know, I hope he resigns badly, but what can I do. Right now I just want to be objective to see what we would get.

The only deal i see making is Swap of 1st rounder and next years 2nd For Abraham. and you guys want to deal him because he wants out from what ive read.

Just Curios but who do you think the Texans should take witht he first pick.

I dont realy like the idea of trading our second round pick straight up or JA. But I would consider somthing like one of our third round picks and another pick from next years draft. Somthing like a third or fourth.

I don't know if we would give up a 2nd. I have seen dicussion where we might consider talks for our 1st for the Jets 1st, Abraham and some other stuff. I don't know though. I would love to get him, but I my opinion does not matter.

For me, a straight up swap is a little much for our team to give up. While he is worth that much, we cannot necissarly afford to give that pick up. If we take Bush, (hope we don't) that means we have to wait until the 3rd round to start drafting OL.

I have thrown out a lot of different ideas for him and even posed the question on the Jets MB a few weeks ago.

One idea I like:
Jets Get: 1st overall pick
2nd third round pick, right after ours. #66

Texans Get: 4th overall pick
John Abreham
6th round pick

Why?
The Jets are not as drasticly over the cap now that they have made some basic cuts and restructuring. Abreham wants out of NY from all reports, and the Jets will want fair value for him. The Jets trade up, drafting Bush/Lienhert, depending on Pennington. The Jets then have an additional 3rd rounder to trade or play with. A player like Wimbly or Ray Edwards or even Dumervile are looking good at this point.

The Texans aquire a young, proven DE and build around him on defense. The Texans also trade down, drafting D'brick if available. Other options are there, but if Tenn. takes D'brick, we could still draft bush unfortunatly. The 6th round pick is just to help balence things out.

I really do not see Abe being traded this year at least. That franchise tag makes it very hard. He would have to sign a long term deal with the understanding of a trade for any team to pull the trigger. He has all the talent and youth you want in a player, but his small injury history and immediate cap hit make it very hard for a team to trade a second round pick straight up, especially a team with as many needs as the Texans.

I hope I was able to answer your questions thouroughly and in a respectful manner. That is how we try to do it in Texas.

Im going to respond to Bubba, and mostly YTF,

Firstly I like how you think YTF. Your Value of JA, along with your own Team needs is right on point. Actually, in that deal you guys would probably not have to give up the 3rd IMO. Maybe somthing later, but not significant.

Bubbs and YTF, I actually came on this site awhile back and told you guys to trade down in a very respectful manner, with facts, and case points from the past 5 years in the NFL. I was laughed at, as this was during the time around Fresno state where the Bush hype was crazy.

You see once the Hype wears off you really get a feel about a Player. Right now, if you were to give me that trade you mentioned the value is on point, but would I take Reggie Bush? No.

What do I think? If you guys can get John Abraham, and Dbrick for the number 1 pick, or say ummmmm, any Good deal where you get a Eli Manning deal you guys should go for it.

Just look at today: Reggie Bush is 5'10, and the lighest RB in the draft. I believe he is lighter then Maurice Drew.

Brickashaw is 6'6 312 now, and did any of you see his combine coverage against Mathius Kiwiana? THE GUY DOMINATES AS A PASS BLOCKER, and his specialty is speed rushers. Being in a division where you have to face Dwight Freeney, Vanden Bosh, and Reggie Hayword 6 games a year, I think its a no brainer.

Let me leave off like this. In the 1997 draft my Jets were in the same position as you guys RIGHT NOW. I had just started watching football and I was soo happy the Jets traded away the pick and some Big Dumb Offensive Lineman that they said was a Franchise LT bla bla bla.

Almost 10 years Later, I still regret not drafting that tackle and the guy has already won a superbowl. The guy was one of the best draft picks ever, and will be a HOF someday after dominating in the NFL for 15-20 years.

The most hyped players, are not always the most important on the football field.

The sexy pick...... this would be Vince or Reggie. After long intensive medition i feel we don't need this hyped pick, we should however,trade it down with the jets obtaining JA and drafting D'brick picking up key positions on both sides of the ball.
We would be a better team by doing so....

I'll be honest, I love the possibility of getting John Abraham. He's still doing fine in age, has 6 years experience, and has produced very well when healthy. Here lies the problem for the Jets: he's worth a 1st round pick, but they will have to settle for a 2nd rounder probably because nobody is that desprate for a DE. Also, you cant trade a player until you are under the cap. Therefore, NYJ might not be able to work out a deal in time for the draft, and may have to wait to trade him til after the draft.

The Jets and every other team has to have thier top 50 player salaries under the salary cap by the begining of March. I am not sure the exact date. I do not know where a Franchised player salary counts against that cap figure, ie. does the salary the tag provides accounted for right now?
