The Jets embarked in earnest yesterday on what promises to be a tumultuous offseason, sending strong signals that the rebuilding under new coach Eric Mangini will be even more widespread than anticipated.

The team will begin casting off high-priced veterans, particularly on offense, later this week, starting with tackle Jason Fabini and fullback Jerald Sowell. Guard Pete Kendall also is expected to be released in a massive salary-cap purge, but the most surprising victim could be six-time Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae.

I could see this coming for a while. I didn't know who would be cut, but they were 20 million over the cap. They will still be cutting some more people.

As for a trade partner, I doubt it.
 
This is nothing neither new nor unexpected. Everybody has known the NYJ were way over the salary cap. Many of us on this board have been speculating the NYJ couldn't afford the no. 4 pick, let along the no. 1. The purge is actually good for the Texans in that it bring the NYJ back in line with the salary cap freeing up money so the NYJ have a chance to make the trade. Before, with the NYJ way over the salary cap, there was no way they could have made the trade for the no. 1 pick. Also, the Texans have a chance to pick a cheep FA.
 
By cutting all of these people they are going to be taking accelerated cap hits on all of their contracts. Jets are either staying where they are or are trading down. They couldn't afford a top pick before these cuts and they still can't afford a top pick after these cuts.
 
I admit, I don't know much about the cap. But taking an additional hit to the cap when your already $20-$25 million over doesn't make sense. Why cut the player, if it doesn't lower you cap figure?

Not necessarily at all. Jason Fabini for instance is in the last year of his contract. They may take like $1 mil in unprorated dead money but clear off $5 mil in salary for a $4 mil savings. The other thing is the rookie cap hit isn't egregious even for top picks when compared to the contracts, particularly in later years, of vets. For instance, San Fran had 11 picks last year including the #1 and fit them into a rookie pool of $6.1 mil.

After further research, base salaries (there may be roster bonuses involved as well) which may be cut at the expense of prorated dead money
Pete Kendall $4.3 mil
Jason Fabini $3.2 mil
Kevin Mawae $2.8 mil
Ty Law $6.3 mil

Have to watch out when looking at cap stuff to see exactly what is being listed. While they have $21 mil in cap room now, that is in large part because MVP Alexander was playing under a franchise tag last year and so is not currently included on their cap. Re-signing him will take a bite out of that cap room as will re-signing other big contributors Steve Hutchinson, Peter Warrick, Rocky Bernard, Joe Jurevicious, Marquel Manuel and Mack Strong, . This time of year, most of the cap listings (but not all) do not include FA's or rookies so while a team may look like it has tons of room, reality may be different.
