Saints Opener Blacked Out

You have to be joking. I expect them to be in the playoffs this year and they cannot even sell out their opener against a tough Seattle team?

The Jaguars have more than 13,000 tickets left for their Sunday, Sept. 19, home opener against Denver, which means the game most likely will be blacked out on local television.

If the blackout occurs, it would be the second consecutive Jaguars home opener not broadcast locally. The team's first eight home openers all were shown in the Jacksonville viewing area.

The Jaguars have the NFL's third-cheapest average ticket price this season, according to a study by the Chicago-based Team Marketing Report. The Jaguars' average price of $40.80 (not including suites and premium seats) is higher than only Arizona's ($39.72) and Buffalo's ($37.13)."

Reminds me of the old Oiler days when corporations had to buy up tickets to get the game televised. But usually it was only when the team was really sorry (about half the time they were here :rolleyes: ).

I don't think it's that. I've seen stats showing that when the Jaguars are televised locally, the broadcast has the highest ratings in Jacksonville during that time period. If that's any indication, people here are still interested enough to tune in when it's available.

Here's a situation I've heard about that seems like a reasonable explanation to me. There are many people here who are casual (bandwagon) Jaguars fans and die-hard college (UF, FSU and Miami) fans. When faced with a decision to keep college season tickets or Jaguars, people keep the college tickets because they would be much harder to get, which is obvious since there are so many seats still available at ALLTEL.

With that scenario in mind, it makes sense why Wayne Weaver, the consummate businessman that he is, would even consider covering up thousands of seats for next season in an effort to increase demand. Don't be surprised if y'all hear that ALLTEL's seating capacity drops from almost 77k this year to only 60k or less next year.

I think most of them were, although I'm not sure which ones...I was at the games! :)

Thats the problem... Jacksonville only has a population of about 736,000. They need about 10% of the population to attend the games. With Miami and Tampa Bay also in-state, I dont think they have a big enough fan base to continually sell out games. Its not like Florida is a huge state to begin with, so why have 3 teams? Personally, I never saw the point in giving them a team to begin with.
 
That's about the same size as Greenbay and they have a 30+ year wait for season tickets. Maybe they need to just franchise the team to the state of Florida residents? No wait, they would punch the wrong spot on the ballot to authorise it.
 
Green Bay also has the only team in Wisconsin... And the Pack wont ever go anywhere, because there are something like 30 shareholders all from the area.
