Vandermeer on 1300

Marc Vandermeer was on AM 1300 The Zone this morning in Austin talking with the hosts about the Texans. He stated that he has never seen such commotion and stress in the organization on what to do about Vince Young.

He estimated that 65-70% of the people throughout the organization want to draft VY. He stated that trading down is probably what will happen but that they are still considering taking VY and keeping both QB's while VY develops. It sounded as though Bush would be the 3rd option.

It sounds as though McNair is being realistic about the possibility of passing on VY and never living it down if he becomes a superstar. This could very well happen and it could be something that would haunt this organization for a long time.

The only way the franchise would be haunted for a long time is if Young becomes the Superstar and the Texans are still in the cellar. If the Texans move to the penthouse it won't matter what Young does. Houston has 5 million people now? I'm pretty sure out of that group the team can find enough Texans fans that won't care the Young was from Houston. It would be a great story, but those don't win fans in the long run. A winning team will get the fans and keep them in the seats.

That pretty much goes against the grain to what he says on his and Richs' show here in Houston. Hmmmmm interesting.

Sam Bowie......

Ok, Houston went with Olajuwon who was the hometown guy. Portland went with Sam Bowie who was not hometown guy. I'm not sure where you were going with this. Both teams passed on Jordan. Houston did pretty well. Portland did not.

Couldn't you take this as Young = Olajuwan (hometown connection) and Bush = Jordan (highly rated player in a position of team strength) just as easily?

That is the first problem with this whole statement. He was in Austin talking with people there to get their opinions on Vince Young/David Carr, I wonder how that was supposed to turn out...

Portland did just fine actually, they had the longest streak of consecutive playoff appearances of this era shortly thereafter (19 years I think). Bowie never amounted to much, but the TrailBlazers didn't suffer for it either.

This analogy has little or no relevant comparison anyways.

True. I was more thinking about Bowie's performance specifically, but the Blazers were very good.

Hell no, not if your agenda is Young at all costs

I think what the guy is trying to say is that we shouldn't pass on the next Jordan becuase we already have a starter at that position. Whether that is Bush/DD or Young /Carr.

They (Trailblazers) passed on MJ and said publicly after the draft that "why would we draft MJ, we've already got Drex"

And Morknolle-you said that their playoff run was good enough without MJ, well just ask them that. I'm pretty sure that if they could turn back the clock they'd do it in a heartbeat.

Everybody loves to talk how Michael Jordan was a unanimous first-ballot HOFer, multiple-NBA-title-winning guy straight out of college. Of course, everyone knew it would all go down that way, I mean, silly TrailBlazers, how could they have been so blind?

MJ was a snot nosed kid coming off a big collegiate win. Say what you want, but no one knew just how good he was going to be. The comparisons between MJ/Vince are absolutely ridiculous because:

(a) Mike is 20/20 hindsight
(b) Vince is blind/blind prediction

End of story. To even mention Vince in the same breath as the most storied basketball player of all time (let alone the dramatic difference in their two sports) is damn near blasphemous, especially when - get this, just in - Vince hasn't even played a pro down yet.

If you think Vince is going to be that great, okay, fine. I don't. But quit pretending to yourself and everyone else on the board like he has already won all of these championships, all these MVPs, and ************************.

And by the way, I didn't know Vandermeer doubled as a Texans employee. But I could definitely see how all of these highly placed executives would go running to the guy to share the orgaization's secrets with him, because everybody knows, official plans are meant to be shared, especially with loudmouth reporters.

Seriously though, the way I hear it:

Since Texans officials are not officially allowed to discuss what they are all absolutely dying to tell a hack reporter like Vandermeer, it turns out the guy set up a secret poll of the entire organization in the men's bathroom. Not an entirely fair poll since he couldn't similarly infiltrate the women's commode, but still, I mean, he's got all the guys here. The code works like this: one flush equals Vince, two flushes equals not Vince, and an audio recorder in the soap dispenser keeps the results. Vandermeer has one of the janitors in his pocket to pull the data at the end of every day.

Either we've got a lot of courtesy flushers in the building, or we've got a lot of Vincers. And if you've ever dumped in a public bathroom, you know there's no such thing as a courtesy flusher. This much is for sure.

Brilliant!

Amazing ! Utterly amazing ! Less than 72 hours after the Texans extended Carr for 3 more years which included compensation for I forget how many
millions of dollars, you Longhorn people are still yapping away about this
silly notion that the Texans would draft a QB this year.

So when someone like Chris Mortensen, Bob Glauber, or Michael Smith report that sources inside the Texans like Bush, it is false, but when Mark Vandermeer reports that sources inside the Texans like Young, it is true?

We'll hear the same chorus from the rusty trombones at every milestone this off-season. Wait until draft day!

Just relaying what I heard. I had no opinions of my own in the posting. :hairpull:

In a way isn't he by being their radio announcer? The team can control that if they'd like. I know JJ does in Dallas and guys will be gone if he doesn't like what they say. I am not a VY drafter or a Longhorn so we can stop that tired excuse for people not liking Carr.

Nobody knows how their team would have ended up had they drafted Jordan, maybe he and Drexler would have led them to a couple championships, maybe they wouldn't have fit on the team together very well. Bottom line, the Blazers enjoyed a pretty good level of success without Jordan.

If everyone really wants a equally valid (probably better for that matter) anology of the 1984 NBA Draft, let's look at the Rockets themselves and their pick of Olajuwon over Jordan rather than the TrailBlazers and their pick of Bowie over Jordan. The Rockets already had Ralph Sampson at center, who had put up two good seasons statistically (about 23 ppg over two years) before Olajuwon got there. Rather than drafting for need (Michael Jordan would have been more of a need), they went with the best player available (Hakeem Olajuwon, I guess it was Akeem at the time) who happened to play the same position as one of their solid players.

The results? The Rockets enjoyed a decent history of success from 1984 onward, Ralph Sampson's career quickly fizzled out as the two could not coincide in the propsed "twin towers" scenario that the Spurs later found success with, Olajuwon eventually led the Rockets (a much, much different team in terms of personnel, talent, and coaching) to two straight NBA championships in the two years that Michael Jordan took off from the league, while Sampson basically contributed nothing more to the Rockets. If the Rockets had selected a "need" player in Michael Jordan, would he and Sampson have gotten along well and would he have reached his same individual accolades and eventual team success? Would Sampson's career have flourished with Jordan rather than fizzling out while trying to share the same position as Olajuwon? Would the Rockets have perennially battled the Lakers as kings of the Western Conference rather than Jordan battling the Celtics and Pistons for reign in the East while the Rockets rarely made it that far in the playoffs? Would Houston have been able to win more championships than just those two that Jordan was retired for? What could have become of the Rockets franchise had they not taken the BPA (FWI Vince is much less of a BPA in this draft than Hakeem was in the 1984 draft) and hometown "hero" (at least hometown in the sense of where he went to college) and gone with a guy at a position they needed more? We will never know, as we will never really know what could have been with our upcoming draft. I'm sure most people in Houston would not admit to wishing they'd gotten Jordan over Olajuwon, but deep down they have to wonder what if they had, and the same will likely happen years down the road regarding the Bush/Vince/trade down decision. Let's just hope the Texans end up on the better winning end of it unlike the Rockets did (I'd happily take 2 championship victories and Hall of Fame career with the hometown Hakeem Olajuwon, but I'd rather have the 6 championships and best player ever accolades of Michael Jordan).

Damn MorKnolle, you've got "The Rambling Disease"! You must be able to type fast with all of your long posts. I think they would be much easier to read if you broke them up into more paragraphs.

It's just so crazy because VY is the most successful college player who grew up in Houston and the Texans just so happen to have the 1st pick in the draft. Then there is Bush being in the same draft. This year's Heisman winner in a very, very talented class (unlike some of the past).

Its just incredibly exciting no matter who prefer to take. We'll be talking (and debating) this draft for years and years to come.
