Conversion to a 4-3

I know the basic differences between a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. I also hear the term "hybrd 4-3" and don't really know what that means. I've also followed the debates on Babin/Peek and their sizes and abilities to play end in a 4-3 if we convert.

I have heard that Denver (why do they keep coming up when talking about the Texans?) runs a defense where their wheel linebacker (weak outside LB) lines up as an end and rushes if it's a pass and runs down the line if it is a run. They play this far more aggressively than the read and react way we used our OLB's last year.

Questions:

How does the Denver personnel look compared to ours? Is this a more useful way to use Babin or Peek if we convert? Anything else?

Their linebackers are better. They do start a huge DE in Trevor Pryce. Maybe we could use Walker the same as Pryce. I think Babin might be able to put on some weight and play the other DE spot.

As for Peek, I say we get rid of him. We are pathetic on defense and what is worse is when we give the opponent 15 yards every other game because of dumb penalties. There's a difference between intensity and stupidity. If he is a starting LB for us then we are in serious trouble.

Babin and Peek can both play DE obviously they will likely need to add a little weight or have someone to to take pressure away from them. Peek is more of a pass rush specialist.

not sure they can play strong side .... weak side maybe

oh duh I re-read that ... thought you meant LB not DE .... I'm not sure either is big enough, or ever will be, for DE

Denver has a really big line up front, we already have the 3-4 DLinemen so we could do something similar. They have the fastest LB group in the league in D.J. Williams, Al Wilson, and Ian Gold, we could have had Derrick Johnson last year that is a similar type of LB would have fit nicely, but we screwed that one up. If we did that system here, I think Peek or Orr could be that LB that comes down on the DLine a lot while Babin is at the DE spot on the other side, then we could maybe have Walker, Payne, and Robaire in there on those type of situations (that is basically a 3-4 with the OLBs down on the line). However, we didn't bring Denver's D-Coordinator over so I don't know if Richard Smith will run anything like that. I also don't know if we have the LB personnel for that, as we would be left with Wong and Greenwood in the LB spots behind the line, and Greenwood isn't an overly good tackler and Wong isn't real fast anymore, so I don't know if the two of them can cover that area in the field very well like the Broncos guys do.

*Edited for emphasis, we got Kubiak from Denver so it is logical to assume we will have an offense like theirs. I don't know if Kubiak will want Smith to run a similar defense or if he'll let him run his own version of a 4-3, that remains to be seen.

^ great post

hey do start a huge DE in Trevor Pryce. Maybe we could use Walker the same as Pryce.

good observation, i've been thinkign the same thing, courtney brown is also huge, so both of their DE's are almost DT size.

You can go edit the posts to near extinction yourself.

This is now a weird thread.

yeah...ive explained it a few times...best thing I ever did. People are quick to call each other i d i o t s....so it did away with a ton of personal attacks. For whatever reason people are not so quick to call each other dumbasses... Its not that the words are any more censorable than others....it's just that one is used way too much on message boards...so I hammered it.

In my opinion, Babin and/or Mario Williams/John Abraham will be our starting DEs next year.

Our LBs are not in the same galaxy with those of Denver. Wong is a serviceable veteran who is coming off and injury and getting up there in years for a LB. Greenwood is a decent OLB who will be much better in the 4-3 and most resembles the type of LB Denver uses. We have no 4-3 MLB, this will have to be addressed in the draft and/or free agency. Peek may be able to play DE or LB, however, likely DE. I could see him play in passing down situations - however, if we trade our pick as I suspect, I am uncertain what the staff will do with Peek.

i heard somebody say lets get rid of peek

please foo dont be a dumbass that would be horrible maybe since we have a Lb coach as D Cor. maybe he might make peek into a succes like a ian gold player:rolleyes:

I don't think Peek will be an every down player, but he is good as a 3rd down type player. I do think we can get better linebackers through free agency or the draft than Peek. Hopefully I'm wrong though and he'll turn into a Steve Foley type player.

Now that our coaching staff is 95% intact, why is it they've given zero hint as to which D we'll be implementing? Seems to me this has HAD to have come up somewhere in the last week or so.

Wong was I believe a serviceable MLB for the Vikings in their 4-3. Play Orr and Greenwood at OLBs with Babin and Peek as speed rushing DEs. If their only purpose is to blow things up in the backfield, I think they'll be great at it. With Walker, Payne, Smith, and Johnson rotating on the inside and outside, our line would be set.:stirpot:
