Screw Bud Adams...

TEXANFAN23435

Waterboy
I never said anything about this, but I was really peeved that Bud Adams was allowed to skip town and take ownership rights to the "OILERS" name with him. When he got to Nashville, the fans let him know that they did not want to be known as the OILERS. When he agreed to rename the team, why did the NFL allow him to keep the OILERS name??? Cleveland got to keep their name so when they got their franchise back, the fans got their TEAM back!!! The moment the NFL picked Houston for a new franchise, McNair should have been given the option of keeping the OILERS name, not to mention the inclusion of the fans vote on this matter.

Now, I for one, always thought that the Columbia Blue in the uniform color scheme should have been changed to a Midnight Blue to make the overall scheme more menacing. But, in lue of what Bud Adams got away with... I would love to see the Texans and McNair stick it to Adams by adopting a SILVER, RED, COLUMBIA BLUE, and WHITE scheme. Bud Adams does not own the color scheme rights nor was the fans of Tennesee going to allow him to use it on their team. I would really enjoy sticking it to Bud Adams!!!!!

Thought this would be a fun discussion, a break from the norm and allow the MB fans to slice and dice this concept anyway they want. If my artistic side hits me, I may attach a conceptual rendering of what's rolling around in my mind.

I have to admitt when the Oilers left I was at least greatfull the colors went with them. However seeing the clips this weekend of Moon throw the prettiest pass ever thrown by an NFL QB in the Columbia blue kinda made me proud and sad all at the same time.

Those are OUR players. They represented OUR team and Tenn has NO right to celebrate them. Moon, Munchack, Matthews, Campbell, Givens, Jones, Drewhill, Jeffries, Fuller, Smith, Dishman.....Ours and ours alone. The history should stay in Houston and McNair should incorporate a little somthing into reliant stadium to celebrate OUR athletes. Some of us still feel strongly about the Oilers. The Texans are our team now but it would still be nice to have a little somthing acknowledging there excistance. You just cant erase 36 years of memory.

VINNY, yes I'm 4 years late with this post but who cares. When I saw the Warren Moon clips for the HOF it brought back memories and the anger of what Bud Adams got away with. Wouldn't you have, at least wanted a vote in this??? I'm for bringing back the city's NFL identity at least in some way.

Would you rather continue that other debate .... Ive passed on those threads for .... about a month .... nice to have something else to talk about ... and since the Oilers reunion was a recent event I think its an appropriate time for discussion.

Good post .... I couldnt agree more .... I followed the Oilers since I was a child , Knew Dante and a few others ....That was Houstons Team ....

Edit ....

Sad thing is it LOOKS like Ole Bud is gonna get to laugh at Houstons expense again with the 3rd pick in the coming draft ....Im dreading the thought

I agree, BUT we lost all that when the team left and the Astrodome was all but empty for their last game. It should of been full to support the TEAM not the stuffed shirts in the main office. It should of been full to protest OUR TEAM leaving and to make it a mental point that if we EVER get a team back in Houston, that the same kind of CR*P that made them leave in the first place don't ever happen again. IMHO

Cleveland Browns fans pitched a fit and held mass protests - in a blizzard! - to make themselves heard about their passion for their football team. They continued this protest until the NFL finally relented and forced Modell to give the name and records back.

The Oilers, on the other hand, had about nine people show up at city hall on a sunny day to show their love for the team. And then nothing was ever heard about it after that...and the rest is history.

IMHO....the "columbia" blue, or smurf blue, or baby blue, or whatever blue, was too soft. And then they'd wear those god-awful all white unis on the road, and it looked like a junior college team.

Bud left that baby blue on the Titans uniforms...and it stopped his franchise about a yard short from winning a championship. ;)

The only way to stick it to Bud Adams is for the Texans to win a Superbowl before the Titans do.

The Texans new defensive coordinator was on the coaching staff of the Oilers team that blew the 32 point lead at Buffalo. Will that do?

I heard Jim Eddy was going to be his secondary coach.

What's funny is . . about a couple of hundred on this message board have come out and say that they were one of the nine people that showed up at city hall that day. :fib ;)

The quotes I read said that Bud would never give up rights to the Oilers name. Just as well, because all's well that ends well.

lol:

yeah, I've heard people tell me that, too. I take it with a grain of salt, though.

I didn't even know about the "Save the Oilers" thing until after it happened and we heard about it on the news. I remember thinking then that this will tarnish Houston fans for years to come. It was poorly organized, and apathy towards Bud/Oilers was rampant in the Houston sports scene by that time.

What some of those on here that are still homers for the Oilers have to realize is that you have to let it go. The Texans are Houston's team now, the Titans belong to Nashville. It is nice to reminisce NOW AND AGAIN over the old team, but they are no more. All y'all hate on Bud and rightfully so (well, most of you) because he did you wrong...um...10 years ago? A decade has passed, a new team is here. Not all of this fanbase was an Oiler fan, I wasn't. I pretty much ignored them if you want to know the truth. I get somewhat aggitated when others assume that I was a FOO (fan of Oilers), just because I root for the Texans, doesn't mean I did for them too. There are plenty more in our fanbase like myself who keep silent as to not upset the apple cart. Leave it to me to push the darned thing over. :stirpot:

What I am trying to say is that it is alright to think about the past, but put it where it belongs. Maybe a different board or meetings every Thursday at one of your houses. This is where the Texans fans meet, not the Oilers.

Napa Auto Parts said:

You tought wrong. There was a prohibition (and I can't remember the details) against the use of the name Oilers by the any new Houston NFL team. Good old K.S. (Bud) Adams was insistent that there never be another team in Houston named the Oilers.

It was thrown together by one of the local Oilers fan clubs and they did a terrible job of organizing and promoting. It wasn't promoted on sports radio, tv, or the newspapers until it failed miserably and predictably.

That said, there wasn't (and isn't) a grass roots Cleveland-like NFL culture here that rose up and voiced loudly their desires for the team to stay. There were a lot of really die hard Oilers fans out there but they were largely outnumbered by those who wanted Bud out of here and others who couldn't care less...

"Letting it go" is not in the programing.

The thread is Tittled "Screw Bud Adams". What did you think was being talked about? Maybe you miss read the tittle. I bet you thought it really said "Screw Sam Adams", the new no bottle opener required screw top.:) Na I'm playing.

Some wounds are just to deep. We the Oiler fans watched a 32 point lead vanish (and are reminded of that every year) and then watch the team that left the city make it to the superbowl by beating the Bills(of all teams)in the last few seconds of the game. Then having to put up with the phrase "Music city miracle."

So no, "letting it go", is not in the programing.

ugh....once again, I was subjected to watching the NFL Films version (and not the short one!) this year. It's like driving past a car crash...tough to take your eyes off of it.

I think my streak is alive of seeing that thing every year for at least the past 10 years. Even after all this time, it still blows my mind that they choked like that...or rather, the defense choked. Moon threw a perfect first half, just brilliant, and no team should expect their offense to keep on scoring when you're 32 points ahead in the third quarter. That was a defensive meltdown plain and simple.

yuck...now my mind feels all dirty. I'm going to go drink a gallon of bleach and Palmolive now...

I loved the Oilers colors...deeper blue? no way. On the Texans, I would hate to see us change uniforms or colors like Les Alexander does with the Rockets since he took over.

No changing uniforms or colors!
I liked the colors too. University of North Carolina hasn't had any problems winning with them.

But, I will agree they are a little soft and the titans were probably smart to spice them up a bit.

I will never forget being 14 years old and wearing my Columbia Blue Oilers Jacket and hat at Three Rivers Stadium for an away game against the Steelers. I was using a urinal when I heard "Hey nice jacket Fairy Boy!" and this 50 year old guy kicked me right in the butt into the urinal. I wasn't feeling too proud of the "Luv ya Blue" at that moment. To the credit of the other Steelers fans a guy about 30 years old attacked they guy that kicked me.

FILO, I agree with darn near 100% of what you post...but it's pretty tough just letting go of something that molded your youth such as how the Oilers molded mine. I grew up in H-town with my older brother who was a Steelers fan and being an older brother he made it a point to raz me about the Oilers every chance he could. Knowing the history of the Oilers you can expect I had to take up for my team quite often. I was crushed when the Oilers left. It's kinda like my first car...1968 AMC Rambler, lime green 4 door, lifter rattlin, rust infected clunker. Most people didn't appreciate it like I did cause they didn't know how I felt cause it was MY car. Kinda like the Oilers...they were MY team. That cars long gone but the memory of my first car is as sentimental as the Oilers as well.

Sorry, can't just forget 'em...wouldn't be right.

Sorry but I don't feel like letting go of the memories of the team I rooted for most of my life. I realize the context of your post is to stop the Bud Bashing which I generally agree with and typically don't partake of (any more), but the Oilers were Houston's Pro Football team for 37 years so expect that topic to creep into the conversation on Houston's current NFL team's message board every once in a while, at least for a few years more years before their history will be totally forgotten.

I'm sure as hell not going to reminisce about Warren Moon on the Titans board where 99% of the people never saw him play or could care less. If this thread is in the wrong forum on this board, then ask the mods to put it in NFL talk - then there's no infringement on Texans stuff and those who weren't fans of the Oilers can ignore it and not be offended.

I totally agree with Aj. The Oilers owned my heart for 37 years, can't block any of that out just because non Oiler fans are offended when some of us reminisce. Cowboy fans come on this board all the time chatting about their team, as do Titan fans. The Oilers might not exist AS THE OILERS, but, they were Houstons team for over 3 decades. Sorry Carrie, but, I will never forget, nor will I ever stop remembering those 37 years.

The TEXANS are my team now! I support them 100%. I hate the Titans and everything that goes with them, as long as Bud Adams owns that team. This thread is titled "Screw Bud Adams." I totally agree with that too!! It's pretty obvious what the thread is about, so non Oiler folks don't need to read it. Simple as that.

I blaime our then mayor as much as I do BLB for the Oilers leaving. I was an Oiler fan as soon as I figured out what football was. After the Jacksonville seranaide I don't think a lot of us really thought Dud would take away our team. I went to the Pittsburgh game that last year to say good bye to my team. To me the Oilers died when they left and I don't want their name or colors back. The Titans are are not the Oilers and I don't think they have any more right to the Oilers history than the Texans do.

Well Sandy, as long as the thread is in TEXANS Tailgate, it will be read by all. Simple as that.

I understand what most of you have stated. I was not going for being flamed by what is left of the Oiler fanbase, I was stating a point on the otherside. I never once said it was offensive, some of you read that into it on your own accord. Offensive doesn't read the same as aggitated. Please keep my post in context.

I think the Oiler talk will NEVER subside with some posters. I am also Packer fan, and when I want to talk Cheese I go to the place where Cheese is talked. Too bad there isn't such place for the diehard Oiler faithful.

I didn't take your post as being offensive. I simply think old Oiler fans have as much right to post in this forum as anyone else. There's a big difference between Packer fans and Oiler fans. Oiler fans were from HOUSTON!!!!!

I have read threads where our resident Cowgirl fans use THIS MESSAGE BOARD to carry on a conversation. Why is it ok for them, and not old Oiler fans? Just because this thread is in TEXANS Tailgate, doesn't mean it has to be read. There are several threads in this forum I never bother to read. I don't think any moderator on this board would be opposed to old Oiler fans having a place to reminisce. Stuff gets brought up all the time, it's part of HOUSTON football history. I agree and can understand. Although I've never been an Oilers fan I was a Los Angeles Rams fan (not nearly devout) but can never receive the team the same as "St Louis"! So in not exactly the same context of course, I relate I guess. And as far as non-oilers reading. . . well, I read most of what posted daily, respond or not and get interested in others opinions and insight.

Now, (not to irritate you) if anything happened to my Cowboys/Texans I'd be heart broken!!!!

Do you realize there is a large Packer fanbase in Houston? Quite a large group and very active. I am not a part of them as I am a Texans fan first and foremost. I never said you didn't have a right to post your Oilers thoughts here. I merely stated this is a Texans board, not for the Oilers. Texans fans are not just in Houston, check out where several posters are, from Colorado to New England and even in Europe. Not all were Oiler fans, they could just want to be a part of the newest franchise.

I have rarely seen Cowboys fans come here to discuss their team...troll, yes but not to discuss what that team up North is doing. They are here to spy on our progress but most are closet or known Texans fans too. Good thing some of them come here to post, or we would have never met Pam!

FiloGirl, did you live in Green Bay for 37 years? I'm a Viking fan too but a secondary team relationship and what we're talking about in terms of Oilers fans in their old hometown is apples and oranges.

btw there's a lot of Cowboys talk in here -- Huge, LMBH, et al. I don't mind if it's in NFL talk - where Oilers stuff should be.

Yes, this is a Texans board but this is also the Houston Oilers former home. Just because there's tens of thousands of yankees from GB and Pitt here doesn't make it the same situation. Those franchises were never based here for the better part of 4 decades. You might just have to deal with it and move on to other things (once this thread is moved to the proper forum).

I could turn this around and ask if you have been a devoted fan to a team that was 1000miles away, and resided deep in the middle of another team's rabid fanbase...but it really means nothing. A fan is a fan is a fan, no matter where they live. We are lucky to live within driving distance to our team, not all of our fanbase is that lucky.

I guess none of you Oiler faithful will ever understand...unless you are accused of being a Cowboys fan because you simply reside in the Lone Star State. What would your reaction be that that?

I thought so. :)

On the contrary, it's those who aren't old Oilers faithful and living here for a good while, that wouldn't get this particular issue. But it doesn't matter now since this is in it's proper forum and you don't have to deal with it.

Not quiet sure I understand what you're getting at Carrie. Maybe I'm just tired and a little slow today! How would you feel if GB kicked the Cheeseheads out! Would you forget all the memories you have of that team? Wouldn't you HOPE that there would be someplace you could go to interact with fellow Packer fans? I was a Niner fan long before the Oilers were born. I still LOVE the Niners, follow them every year, frequent their message board, and most of all, wish them well, except when they play the TEXANS!! I personally "let go" of the Oilers the day they moved to Tenn. I went through two years of grief stricken football seasons before I could watch another NFL game. The day BOb McNair signed on the dotted line I became a TEXAN through and through. Why?? Because they are my hometown team, just like the Oilers were my hometown team for most of my long life.

Don't blame just the mayor for the Oilers leaving. It was also the Cracker Jack team of reporters who so lovingly concvinced this whole town the Oilers really didnt need a new stadium cause Bud was bluffing and would never ever move the team. Blame Drayton McClain for telling the Harris County Sports Authority that there was nothing wrong with the Dome and how wonderfull of a place it is to watch both baseball and football.(then turn around after the Oilers left and threaten to move the team to Washington if the attendence didnt improve and we had to build him a new ballpark) Blame the fans for listening. Blame Jim Eddy for blowing a 32 point lead. (In my opinion this was the event that started it all. We win the game we steam roll right into the Superbowl, beat the Cowboys, and never would we let our Superbowl champions move out of state. Instead our hearts get ripped out and Bud comes out after the next year and says he want a new stadium or else....You know the rest) Oh and blame Lanier as well.

You are making my point and not realizing it. There is nothing wrong with reminiscing over your Oilers, my original and long ago point was that it was not a Texans topic on a Texans board. I know y'all like to get mushy over what happend over 10 years ago, and I don't believe it will blow over in a couple years. Y'all will take it to the grave, and that is not a bad thing. Being an Oiler fan is not a bad thing, but being one on in the middle of the Texans board makes for some aggrivation (noted your dislike for Cowboy talk on our board, you comprendez?) and you should have a place to love you days of yore, just not necessarily here. Like you talking your 49er stuff at a 49er board. This topic is where it belongs, not that I asked for it to be moved, I simply gave my .02 and it blew up from there. Not the first time this has happend.

Are we done with this yet? :texflag:

Thanks for stirring the Oilers juices btw.... I think it's time to start a few more threads about the Blue.

How about that LYB party last Sunday up in the Woodlands? They had a great turnout. I didn't feel like making the drive and I heard there was a line a mile long to get in...

My advice would be to quit while your ahead.....or at least quit while you're not so far behind. You are now in the NFL forum so if you would like to engage in pure Texans talk, there's a couple of other forums waiting just for you. :ok:

Thanks for stirring the Oilers juices btw.... I think it's time to start a few more threads about the Blue.

How about that LYB party last Sunday up in the Woodlands? They had a great turnout. I didn't feel like making the drive and I heard there was a line a mile long to get in...
What Love Ya Blue Party?! I missed it? Like finding out there was a save the Oilers rally all over again!

Thanks for finally understanding... as a reminder, all I was doing was responding in kind to this kind of stuff:

What part of not posting 'offending' is not getting through.
I never said the Oilers offended me, you seem to think I did. Feeling spiteful tonight, aj? Pissy over the extention or just me in general?

Just curious ... is anyone planning on going to Canton in July?

p.s., FILO ... time to take some of you own advice and "let it go."

Man, if I were Bud Adams and could see that an action I took 10 odd years ago was still affecting people viciously the way it is...and I mean apparent old friends by the way you guys are calling each other by name. These are words that are escalating to a point that if someone doesn't stop, you'll never treat each other the same again.

Time to put it to rest. :)

Sorry if I overstepped my bounds. :hide:

I'm considering it aj.

I grew up in Houston 1975-1984. I loved the Oilers from the second I was taught football. I grew up watching them get destroyed by the Steelers, the a final loss in the playoffs in oakland. Then the team stank. I mean bad....
I moved to Toronto in '84, but my love for that team wasn't going to subside.

The day they signed Moon and (i forget when) traded the rights to everett for a ton....I knew a special team was possible. What I didn't know was that they put together a special team...one that knew just how to get under my skin and break my heart every year even worse than the previous year.

Then came the frigging afternoon in Buffalo. The game was not sold out so it was blacked out here in toronto as we get Buffalo TV. Two buddies and I decided to trek to Ticketmaster and lo and behold, landed crappy seats the day before the game....and drove out immediately to spend the night in the Falls, then tailgate nice and early.

The day of the game was friggin gross weather wise. It was cold, damp, miserable drizzle. My buds, both diehard Dolphin fans thus even bigger haters of the Bills than me...there to root on my Oilers...and me...fighting now a miserable cold as we drank hot chocolate and prayed for gametime to hit us already.

We get inside the stadium and are stunned. You have no idea how many empty seats there were at gametime. I think if I remember correctly, only half of the upper bowl was filled, which was really unheard of in Buffalo as they had a great record selling the joint out.

The game starts and it's a start you dream about. Moon is crisp, they're moving the ball at will and the points start flying. At Halftime I am just euphoric. 28-3. WTF. I see some fans already going home in the parking lot. I am thrilled. I see the Oilers come back onto the field and most you can see wide toothy smiles as they started stretching. I can't wait for the second half...i'm gonna enjoy and savour it. lol

First series in, Bubba McDowell picks off Reich and scores. Holy christ. 35-3 and it's early! Pour it on boys! I stand up and cheer the TD, when suddenly something hits my back and it friggin hurt. I turn around...someone tossed a beer bottle at me and it hit me flush in the back. I scream for security, no dice. They barely help me at all. I guess wearing my jersey (moon home) wasn't a good idea. I'm lucky to this day that it only hit me in the back, although it's good to know you can sneak in beer bottles into Rich Stadium.

I am now in pain, but hey, what's a little pain while I'm watching my boys torch the Bills in their own house?

35-10. No biggie. 3 mins later. 35-17 thx to an onside kick where our special teams looked like it fell asleep. uhhhhhh. I look at the clock. OMFG. There's still half of the 3rd quarter left. I look at the Oiler sideline and I see all I need to see. I start fearing the worst. That fear gets realized as on fourth frickin down Reich hit Reed for a huge play. I think that made the score 35-31. I felt clausterphobic and wanted to leave. I couldn't watch it anymore. But I stayed to the bitter end.

To make matters worse, I had a miserable cold/flu for almost a full week after that game. They broke my heart.

On top of that, they then finally win the division the next year and get some much needed home field advantage...then cannot beat an over the hill Joe Montana and a good, but certainly not great Chief team. Worse was that i had tickets for the AFC Championship..which was going to be in Buffalo. I could smell that game..was dying for revenge, but for the zillionth time they choked.

That's why to this day, when moon was announced for the HOF, I didn't even smile. IMO he was part of and a major reason for playoff choke after playoff choke. Great QBs find a way to will their teams to victory...and he never did.

When Bud announced he was done with Houston, I almost cried. Many years later, I still root for that team....I guess after 28 years of understanding football and only knowing how to root for one team, I can't change now. But my hatred for Bud remains...and my pain for most Oiler memories doesn't fade.

I'm sorry if some of you guys are from other places, but most of us are ex-Oiler fans and this is a Houston football forum. I'm sorry it offended some of you.

Vinny, I'm assuming that post was directed at me so I'll simply state the following. I might be from another place BUT I'm from Houston, born and raised. Lived on South Acres in Houston, went to Foster Elem. Moved to and lived on Longwood Drive and went to school at McMasters Elem and San Jacinto Jr. High in Pasadena. Moved to Kansas. Not as bad as it sounds, actually a pretty darn good place to raise kids. The point I'm making is...just cause we don't LIVE in Houston and aren't as old a poster as some of you all appear to be, doesn't make us care any more or less than the rest of you when it comes to Oiler History. I've made my feelings quite clear about Oiler/Texan Football in the past. The point I was making was simply this...comments are being made that are very snide and bordering on viciousness and if people don't stop, they'll never be able to act the same to each other again. That's all my point was about. This can be discussed in a cival manner without out trying to win a verbal peeing match.

I suppose this will make me a target for future flamings, but it doesn't really affect my standing in life if I'm accepted as a poster here or not. Quite enjoyable to chat with others about different things, but it doesn't shape my life.

Sorry for the long post.

Well Aj. The HOF game is in August! :) Don't go tOOOOOOO early, hotter than he** there that time of year.

If I had all the money in TEXAS I would NOT go to Canton this year! Why in the world would I pay good money to see a QB I simply DO NOT respect get inducted into the hall,TWO COWBOYS, and John Maddein??! Don't think so!!!!!

Anyway!! All of you that decide to go, have a great time! I won't even be watching it on TV this year.

BTW: When do they decide who plays in the HOF game??

My apologies then to You. I can't believe most people can't recognize for themselves when things are getting out of control. What is posted alot of times is just a fraction of what someone is truly thinking. When you can't see someones eyes when you're talking to them or the inflection of tone in their voice, you'll never truly know how you're being taken in the course of a conversation.

FILO_girl maybe the reason you don't understand all this reminiscing about the Oilers is because you are not from Houston or Texas. When did you move to Houston?
