7-Round Mock (with Vince Young)

AustinJB

Rookie
YES, this is a mock draft in which we take VY. That is my preference, but even if you don't agree w/ that, I believe the rest of the draft is realistic and would please many...not to mention solidify a lot of holes on our team.

Since I'm taking VY, I would trade Carr. In this scenario, we trade w/ Dolphins for Ricky Williams and a 3rd round pick this year <OR> we trade w/ Jets for Abraham and a 3rd round pick this year.

That would give us THREE 3rd round picks. I package two of those to move back into the middle of the 2nd round.

Rd 1. Vince Young, QB
-Will more than likely sit out at least half of season one to learn from Kubiak, but gives the Texans their QB of the future; speedy and athletic QB with a strong, accurate arm. A fierce competitor that brings an incredible work ethic...the leader that we've been missing at the position.

Rd 2a. Daryn Colledge, OT
-Gives the Texans much-needed stability on the Oline and will start immediately. A brilliant pass blocker and an excellent athlete with great quickness who moves extremely well; great upside potential.

Rd 2b. Jonathan Joseph, CB
-McNair gets his SC boy. Can step in opposite D-Rob as our #2 corner. Has good size and excellent recovery speed and is a reliable tackler who will support the run.

Rd 3. Joe Klopfenstein, TE
-Pass receiving end that will expand the offense. Has soft hands and will make the tough catch in traffic...Can get down the field and stretch the seam; Excellent threat in the red zone.

Rd 4. Ray Edwards, DE
-Great size and speed for an end. Will provide a consistent pass rush and has a great motor. Still needs a little work on technique and strength but has great upside.

Rd 5. Rob Sims, OG
-Quick, athletic lineman that will fit nicely in Kubiak's zone-blocking scheme. Has only played guard for a year (was an OT first three years) so he'll need to work on technique.

Rd 6. Dwayne Slay, FS
-Very physical DB that will really lay the lumber and give WRs a case of alligator arms. Needs to improve in pass coverage but could compete for the starting spot w/ CC Brown.

Rd 7. Jeremy Bloom, WR
-Lightning fast, quick receiver that is reported to run in the 4.25 range. Decent hands and has experience returning kicks. A Jerome Mathis-type player except he is more polished as a receiver. Has sat out of football for two seasons after being a Freshman All-American in 2002; NCAA refused to allow him eligibility b/c he is an Olympic skier and therefore received endorsements. Would be an excellent addition to the return game (mainly punt returns) and could compete for the #2 WR spot.

What do ya'll think? Would you be happy with this draft?

Not bad, except I think that Carr has much more value than what you received in your mock. BTW, where did you get the extra 2nd?

I like all of your picks, but would have liked 1-2 LBs.

This draft is not overly good, and that is not because I am not a VY supporter. Let's just look at the picks.

1. VY-that is who you want so that is fine, I wont argue him.
2. Daryn Colledge- Likely more of a G in the zone blocking scheme and not overly adept to play LT in the NFL. Take an athletic RT so that we can leave Pitts at LT. Maybe McNeil he will be a second rounder.
2. Jonathan Joseph- actually no probelms here the kid is raw, but will be starting by midseason. He is D-rob the second.
3. Kloppenstien- Why get a fourth or fifth round guy in the third. Why not T.J. Williams, Maurice Stovall, or Anthony Fasano
4. Ray Edwards- this guy will fall much farther, plus you should have some decent options like Parys from Tennessee or someone of that type
5. Rob Sims-another reach, you are passing up Gs that would better fit the system like Aldo de la Garza or something
6 Dwayne Slay- look everyone loves him and if he is here go for it it would not be bad value
7 Jeremy Bloom- the guy is a skier. He is not that fast. He is not a good WR. This would be a waste of the pick. Since it is a 7th rounder I cant care that much.

If we were to draft slay, which I support, he would be competing for SS not FS. FS=Ballhawks, SS=Slay's of the league.

I am not that big on Kloppenstien either. Fasano is my guy in the 3rd if I'm looking TE.

Ray Edwards will not fall much further. His potential and natural size and ability will keep him afloat. He is like 6-7. He lacks polish and he came out in a DE heavy draft. I would love it if we took him in the 4th.

I havent heard much on bloom. I am interested if he runs a 4.2, especially if it is a different kind of speed than Mathis. We need PR speed/quickness. I also like Skyler Green for this.

I would prefer to trade with the J-E-T-S than the Raiders.

1. VY-if you are trading Carr we need a QB. Good choice.

2. Daryn Colledge- I would prefer going after someone like Jon Scott. I am not sure if colledge would be able to play Tackle at the pro level.

2. Jonathan Joseph- solid pick. This guy will cast Pbuch to the bench where he perfect his matador style tackling style against the tackling dummy.

3. Kloppenstien- I have heard good things about Kloppy, but Byrd might still be available. If he is, I would grab him.

4. Ray Edwards- I see the need, but i would go after a guard here. And I have one in mind:Jason Spitz. He could be a nasty guard that would be a good addition to the upgraded line.

5. Rob Sims-Since I already took a tackle, I need a DE. How about your choice: Ray Edwards as a backup/spot starter?

6 Dwayne Slay- We need a hard hitter on D. We need someone who will make opposing wrs think about going down the middle. This is our guy!

7 Jeremy Bloom- This could be a guy who can bring us some publicity. No publicity is a bad thing, plus its a 7th rounder. If he can make the team, power to him!

I like what you came up with. This is a great situation. If what you or I came up with comes to fruition, I will be dancing in the streets!

We, a small, intelligent group of draft nuts with the teams BEST needs and future success in mind, should be in charge of the draft. Not this garbage that took TJ at 16 and Morency in the 3rd. I give props on Mathis, but that was our ST cordinator only, not our FO.

I'm not familiar with many college players... so I can't really say too much, about yur pics..... but

1) VY- shew........... that was close, I thought we were going to do something stupid.

2)OT- I do believe OT in the Second round is the way to go.

2b)This is the only one I question.... I'd much rather beef up my pass rush this high in the order..... with good constant pressure, your secondary is going to look a lot better than last year.

This is where I'd have taken the DE/OLB if we were to stick to the 3-4..... which i think we should do.... I really think Babin and Peak would have a sweeet year, if we do.

I would take the recieving TE in the 3rd, but he's got to be a seviceable blocker as well..... not probowl or anything, but he's got to be defenses have got to be concerned about his blocking responsibilities..... I think that is how a tight end really becomes affective.. DE/LBs, think they've got him beat, then BAM he scores a touchdown, or a 15 yard gain.

all your other picks...... in regards to position, I'm fine with.

Best mock I've seen yet..

How awesome would it be if us draft nuts really did get control of this year's draft?! How awesome would it be to go to New York and make the picks. I can see it now. Instead of all sitting in suits and ties like the other tem reps, we would all be in our Texans Jerseys, hats, and beanies!

We should do it. We should have a small group of like 5 guys go and represent the "fans."

Check your PM in a few minutes.

In the post, I explained that the trade for Carr would give us an extra 3rd round pick this year (and hopefully a 2nd or 3rd next year.) I would trade two of those 3rd rounders to move back into the middle of the 2nd.:)

i like this mock a lot. and i'd take the jets deal over the dolphin in this scenario since i'd rather have abraham than ricky.

joseph and colledge in the 2nd are good picks, klopfenstein in the 3rd is a good pick, if you want a guard in the 4th round which i think is a good idea put OG Mark Setterstrom - Minn there, he's a good fit for the zone-blocking scheme.

i dont think Slay can make it as a FS in the NFL, his coverage skills are not good, and he has below average speed for a safety, and we don't need another SS with Earl and Brown already.

oh, and the best pick you made was taking Vince #1.

3. Kloppenstien- Why get a fourth or fifth round guy in the third. Why not T.J. Williams, Maurice Stovall, or Anthony Fasano

kloppenstein is rated higher than TJ Williams, he is a 3rd round grade. Fasano is a 2nd round grade who will likely be long gone by the time we pick in the 3rd (he could sneak into the 1st). Stovall (WR) is a 2nd round grade, he'll likely be gone.

2a. Colledge-I was operating under the assumption that Winston, Justince and possibly Scott would be gone after the 1st round. I don't think McNeal is quick enough for Kubes scheme; I think Colledge would be fine at LT or RT, which would allow Pitts to stay at LT.
3. Klopfenstein-I think a lot of the other top-notch TEs will be gone by this point. I think our options would be Thomas, Klopfenstein and MAYBE Fasano. If this were the case, I would take Fasano, Klop, and Thomas in that order.
4. I don't see Edwards dropping further than the 4th round. He is a great prospect.
5. I think Rob Sims is exactly the type of OG that Kubes prefers. Sims is 6'4" 310lbs and VERY athletic. He's the type that many pass on, but Kubes loves their ability to move in the zone-blocking.
7. Bloom IS very fast. It's reported that he runs a 4.25 range...but hey, he'll run at the combine so we'll see. If he does run that fast, he'll grab the attention of many but may still fall this far b/c he has been out of football for a while.

2b. I went w/ CB b/c McNair loves his SC boys. Plus, I think we could get Ray Edwards in the 4th round to compete w/ Babin for a DE spot (remember that I got Abraham from the Jets to play the other DE.)

Thanks for the feedback....If only we could make the picks:redtowel:

Thanks for the compliments everyone....a few disagreements w/ some of the picks, but that is to be expected.

Overall, great feedback. I just HOPE the draft goes this well (mainly the #1 pick.)

I don't understand the TJ pick, I've heard rumors that our LB coach didn't like Derrick Johnson because he didn't think he could shed off blocks, but this is the same guy that really liked Morlon Greenwood and, needless to say, he is currently unemployed and without even a job interview in sight. I don't think Morency was that bad of a pick in the 3rd round, I question making that pick since RB wasn't that big of a need for us, but maybe they wanted a guy similar to DD since he had missed a couple games due to injury his first two seasons. I personally was hoping they'd get Mathis in the 3rd because I didn't think he'd be available in the 4th, but he fell to us, so hopefully he keeps up the Pro-Bowl quality kick returning and develops his game as a WR.

RE Bloom: He's a big time Mathis clone. I'm not sure if he can be an NFL receiver. He might be worth the gamble. If you can be the best in the world at something, you might be able to take elite speed and quickness on the football field and learn how to be an NFL slot receiver.

RE Klopfenstein: I like him, he's got some potential. This is a deep TE draft, it would be a shame if we don't come away with a good one.

dont we have two 3rd round picks thanks to new orleans?

We had two prior to the trade and three after. The person who made the mock then traded two of them to get back into the second.

austinjb.... i dont think it is a very good overall draft.. i respect your work though...

one thing i saw was you are wanting to trade carr and draft VY.

then you stated that once we have VY you will sit him?!?:pigfly:

who will he sit begind for 8 games? TONY BANKS?!

thats the only thing that really frustrated me

I respect your opinion, and I understand the frustration about having an unproven QB (either Banks or Ragone) start for the first 8 games while the "QB of the future" sits and learns.....but then again Carr is unproven as well. I feel like this would be the best scenario for the Texans to build the team for the long-run.

Some people (probably including you) may think that IF we do draft VY, we should play Carr for a year and THEN trade him. In reality, we may not get as much in a trade for Carr after next season if this happens. Everyone w/ this view seems to think that Carr can "prove" himself and increase his value. My concern is, what if (even w/ Kubes tutoring, stable Oline, etc.) Carr stinks it up? THEN his trade value is not as high as it is now. Then we get nothing for all the money and time that we invested in him.

For these reasons, it is my belief that IF we draft VY, we should trade Carr immediately for value (i.e. Abraham+draft picks or Ricky+picks in my scenario) and let one of the back-ups start. And for all we know, (w/ the horrible coaching, etc.) Ragone may even play better than Carr has. Even if Ragone/Banks are not good, I would be willing to go this route if it means that it will be better for the team in the long-run.

While I don't believe in necessarily "sacrificing" wins to build the team, it is a reality that teams are often faced with. All of these things are obviously something that Kubes & co. will have to evaluate and decide on if they decide to go this route.:twocents:

I just caught a 10-minute ESPN special about Bloom that seems to support my pick (for whatever that is worth.)

They discussed how he'll be preparing for the combine over the next two months....said that he has sub-4.3 speed and great quickness. He has great agility and balance which is shown by his ability to ski at an olympic level...he's one of the favorites to win the gold. Also discussed his heart, dedication, and work ethic as some of his greatest attributes.

However, he may turn some heads at the combine and not be available in the 7th....Kiper was projecting him to go somewhere between the 3rd-6th round (don't know if I'd pick him any earlier than the 6th round though.)

This guy is quickly becoming my sleeper of the draft.

what do we do with him though? we are set at the return positions with mathis and pburnt, and i dont think we'll have room on the roster for that big of a developmental prospect at WR.

he'lll be a good pick for someone who need a return man, but i dont think that team is us.

I was thinking about using him to return punts instead of Pburnt.

I also think that he really could compete for the #2 receiver spot. Of course, since he has been out of football for two years, that will be something that needs to be determined by scouts at the combine/workouts. Unless we are targeting a big-name FA WR like Wayne or someone, IMO it would be worth it to see what he could do (especially taking him in a lower round.)

He can't be any worse than Mr. Butterfingers himself Corey Dreadford....can he?:yahoo:

He isnt going to even be there, he is going to be gone the first day. The guy is a monster with zero fat on him and he is 6'7'' at least 270. Depending on his combine and workouts, he will be going much earlier than people think. He is actually an intelligent person as well. I would be suprised to see him make it to the third round.

After reviewing several draft boards, I've come to believe that Jonathan Joseph will drop into the 3rd round. I also believe that Kubiak will focus on defense a lot more than I had originally thought. With that in mind, I've revised my mock slightly.

Trade Carr to the Dolphins for Ricky Williams and a 3rd round pick this year (and a 2nd round pick next year.)

That would give us THREE 3rd round picks this year. Instead of packaging two of those picks to move back into the 2nd round (as I did in my original mock,) I will keep them b/c I believe the quality players that we need will still be available.

Rd 2. Daryn Colledge, OT
-Although Kubiak is known for finding Oline talent in later rounds, I feel like this is his man and he'll be afraid to pass him up....he has the nasty demeanor that Kubes loves in his linemen. Will give the Texans much-needed stability on the Oline and will start immediately. A brilliant pass blocker and an excellent athlete with great quickness who moves extremely well; great upside potential.

Rd 3a. Ray Edwards, DE
-Great size and speed for an end. Will provide a consistent pass rush and has a great motor. Still needs a little work on technique and strength but has great upside.

Rd 3b. Greg Blue, FS
-Instant upgrade at FS. Very fast; outstanding in run support-lives for the big hit and will lay people out...Fluid hips and has excellent range in coverage...An intimidator.

Rd 3c. Jonathan Joseph, CB
-McNair gets his SC boy. Can step in opposite D-Rob as our #2 corner. Has good size and excellent recovery speed and is a reliable tackler who will support the run.

Rd 4. Joe Klopfenstein, TE
-Pass receiving end that will expand the offense. Has soft hands and will make the tough catch in traffic...Can get down the field and stretch the seam; Excellent threat in the red zone.

Rd 5. Rob Sims, OG...<OR>...Mark Setterstrom, OG (whichever is available; both possess the same attributes)
-Quick, athletic mobile linemen that move well in space and will fit nicely in Kubiak's zone-blocking scheme. Tough w/ a nasty attitude.

Rd 6. Aaron Harris, MLB
-Doesn't have great size at 6' 235lbs, but is a tackling machine--very much in the Zach Thomas mold. A very physical player who is a secure tackler and can fly around from sideline to sideline making plays. He has great speed, agility, and acceleration for a linebacker. Is a very intense player with passion for playing defense.

Rd 7. Jeremy Bloom, WR
-Stock is quickly rising so he may no longer be available in the 7th round.Lightning fast, quick receiver that is reported to run in the 4.25 range. Decent hands and has experience returning kicks. (If Bloom isn't available, I would target Cory Rodgers, Devin Aromashadu, or even Michael Robinson.)
