What THREE changes would you make to improve this team next year.

What THREE changes would you make to improve this team next year.

#1 Pass protection. (If this isn't on your list you haven't been paying attention).
I think we need to upgrade TWO players on this O-line. It doesn't have to be high priced talent but it needs to be talent. Most importantly I think the coaching needs to instill a new attitude and a totally new mentality in our O-line.

#2 A Well rounded Tight End.
I would like to see a big, fast, athletic, tight end. One who can block well and make key pass reception. Most importantly we need a guy who will open up the middle and make it a little easier for our Wide Recievers to get seperation. I feel with the right player not only will the Tight End have good numbers but he will make the rest of the recieving core that much better.

#3 An Effective Pass rush. We have done a very poor job of getting to the opposing team's QB. We need a pass rushing DE or a LB that can wreak havoc and make the opposing team's QB sweat.

I would have put a coaching change on this list but thanks to Mr. McNair that is already done. A hybrid 4-3 / 3-4 defense is going to be interesting and it will be fun to see a new Offensive playbook that doesn't focus on keeping it close, and to see a defense that isn't focus on bending but not breaking.

I intentionally didn't list specific players names because I think it is irrelevant. We need certain jobs done, and we need the right players to do those jobs. Who they are dosen't matter to me as long as they get the job done.

This should be a fun offseason.

this is tough to say because so much is going to be affected by our new coaching staff.

1
Top priority needs to be reducing the number of sacks. From aquiring new linemen to teaching the linemen a better blocking scheme. Teaching recievers how to get open faster and teaching the QB to make better, faster reads. The number of sacks HAS to be reduced dramatically in order for us to field a winning team.

2
3rd down coversion percentage and big plays has to be reduced. Our defense just doesnt seem to be able to get opposing offenses off the field on a regular basis. We give up tons of 3rd and longs. We will never win if we cant stop offenses.

3
Leadership on both sides of the ball. On defense Dunta Robinson is our obvious leader. However he can be taken out of the game by not throwing his way. Getting a strong defender that can affect all aspects of the game would be huge. On offense we need someone for our team to ralley around and support. Someone that the team knows they can count on when they need a big play. The key possitions there seem to be either QB or RB.. someone who can touch the ball on any given play.

I'd have to agree with LBC Justin's take for the most part.

I'm a firm believer that games are won/lost in the trenches. So my order of importance:

1. Pass protection
2. Defensive line (for both pass rush & run stopping)
3. TE (a solid blocker that can catch, too)

I'd like to see upgrades at safety and a solid #2 CB, as well. But the above three are probably the most important at this point.

1. Pass Protection- IMO this is the only way to properly evaluate Carr and the rest of the WR's (Mathis, Gaffney etc)

2. Pressure on opposing QB- Through the DL, or effective blitzing of LB's and DB's I think an aggressive D takes away from the other team being able to scheme against it.

3. Turnovers- I believe they will be a direct result of the pressure on the QB, and maybe more importantly the scheme of the DC...I really like how the Bengals took the ball away this yr even with a relatively young defense

#1 win more games
#2 lose less games
#3 either #1 or #2.
....
...
...
just kidding

#1: Pass Protection/sacks - obviously our biggest flaw
#2: Take risks - throw the deep ball, do an onsides, run a flea flicker
#3: Stop the run- its nauseating to see consistent 4-5 yard gains

Yeah all makes sense for what has been said already. My 3 items would be:
1. Pass protection - gotta protect David Carr and reduce the sacks
2. TE - A good TE that can block and catch would be a huge plus for the offence.
3. LB - I think if we can get a big time LB who can help the secondary and also come in and rush the QB would really take the defence to the next level

#1 PASS PROTECTION
To prevent Carr from becoming damaged goods permanently due to lack of confidence, we need to give this boy some time to throw and give him some more control in running his own offense.

#2 Defensive Pass Rush (Defensive Lineman or Stud LInebacker)
We're going to need to address this as soon as we have our offensive line resolved (or should I say WHEN we have our offensive line resolved). AJ Hawk anyone? Anyone?

#3 A right cornerback
I still cannot BELIEVE we let Aaron Glenn go...but the past is the past and we can't undo it now. This should be a high priority as it goes hand in hand with need #2. Otherwise, all a QB is going to have to do is throw at our existing RCB because (assuming we can get some pressure on him) Dunta won't be there.

Runner up #4
#2 WR. I'd LOVE for us to get a true #2 WR (Peerless Price? He seems to come cheap), but we have other pressing needs at this point and I was asked to give my top THREE.

Passing game - everyone needs to improve. The staff alone should account for incremental improvement. It would be interesting to see if there are no acquisitions on the offense this off season and actually measure if it was the talent or the coaching by looking at 2005 vs 2006. The new attitude is the change.

Defense - it is bad and it looks to be neglected moving forward, which is the way the virtual wind is blowing. Today is 1/30/06 and I have zero expectations for this team to show any improvement. The change here is for the team to give us something for us to be at least excited about, like a DC.

PBuch, Babin, TJ, DC, Wade, Greenwood and Wand also known as "The Head Scratchers." This is the year to show us that you are at least as valuable as your contract or the players/picks we gave up for you. The change needed here is that new regime needs to put these guys on the spot and let the GM know that the staff has x or y expectations for each of these players and that they should be moved if they do not live up to them.

1. Offensive line - Is Pitts the mauler you need at LT? I don't think so, but he did have a decent year last year. I would like us trade down to the Jets at th3 #4 spot which is pretty safe for us to either draft D'Brick or D-Angelo. We would in exchange for the trade get the #1 pick next year, the 3rd and the 5th round this year. We should then trade our 2nd and our 3rd to move up into the 1st round if we select D'Angelo and pick up one of the best available offensive lineman (Max Jean-Gilles). Of course we can always use help at DE if we switched to the 4-3 so it wouldn't hurt to trade down even further in the 1st with our 1st pick and get either Mario Williams or Tamba Hali.

2. Bring in a #1 Cornerback. I hate to tell you folks, but Dunta is not a #1 CB right now. He may be soon, but not now. He still has some learning to do. We should go after a big name CB like Nate Clements. We absolutely have to address this position at both the starting and nickel slots.

3. TE, I have a feeling Joppru will be healthy, but seriously, he hasn't played a game in 3 years, that's gotta take a toll on your abilities for a while. Either draft one or bring in younger FA, not an old wornout TE like Bruener.

4. Safety. We need a strong free-safety, one that can gamble, get burnt but good enough to recover.

1.) Better pass rush....ours has been sickening.

2.) Fewer sacks

3.) A well rounded TE. With Bruener it's like teams don't cover him like he's Ryan Bowen or something. Get someone in there who can block and be an effective pass catcher.

#1. A pass catching tight end.
#2. Give Marcos Coleman his pink slip and go get a saftey that likes to hit.
#3. of course protection for the QB but I think a Pitts at left tackle Mckinney at left gaurd Drew H at center weigert at right tackle and a free agent at right gaurd with good coaching that line will do good things. By the way I did not mention Todd Wade he is on the first train out of town with m coleman.

1. Pass Protection

2. Another big play threat besides AJ (mathis is not this guy untill he proves he can be an NFL WR, not just a KR)

3. Pass Rush

1. Pass protection.... Not sure what Kubiak is going to do in this regard, I know denver's system utilized alot of smaller, quicker linemen where as we've mainly targetted the behemoth, lead footen, can't pass block for their life kinda guys. It may take several seasons for us to acquire the players to best perform with the scheme, but I'd look for us to make a few moves by this first season.

2. Our passing game. Our passing game is abysmal. Our running game is decent, but we can't pass for jack. Part of that is due to the above, but I think an honest-to-god dual threat tight end would give us the biggest boost. Our receiving corp could use a true #2, but a dual threat TE will help us achieve the fastest turnaround by helping to keep the defense guessing and giving Carr another reliable option.

3. Our secondary. We have one good corner....and that's about it. PBuch might (ok probably not, but maybe?) turn around at some point but he was horrible last year. Faggins was a mediocre nickel back last year IMO, and Earl and Brown are too green. We need to add another talented cornerback to our group (preferably a solid #1 like SES suggested) and bring in a veteran safety to help the young guys along.

I was thinking, if you had no idea of who was in the draft, you just had to name the top 3 positions you wanted to see addressed by the draft, what would you choose? What I consider to be our greatest needs don't match up with who I want to draft.

I'd draft, based on need:
1. A stud LT
2. A dual threat TE
3. A shut down corner
(A close fourth would be a good pass rushing DE to fit into our new 4-3)

Neither Vince nor Reggie fit into what I think we need the most, but I guess this is going to be one of those BPA situations unless we get a good trade down.

1. New offense
2. New defense
3. New special teams

Once we address these issues, we should be contenders.

And yes, this post really was a joke. :stirpot:

SERIOUSLY..
1. Help on the DL (more depth)
2. Help on the OL (more skill)
3. Linebackers

Agree with these three areas. I am starting to think that trading down is going to be more beneficial for this team (getting another 2nd round pick this year)

Area 1: Pass Protection- try to get Nalen to come over, and then draft best o-line that falls to the first 2nd rounder and the first 3rd rounder.

Area 2: Pass Rush (mainly d-line)- if you improve your d-line play the LB's and secondary play will also improve. Williams with the 1st rounder at DE would really help our Pass Rush.

Area 3: Another Corner (Don't think PBuc or Faggins is the answer)- use that other 2nd rounder and get either Marshall or Minter. Should be about the same ability as BPuc and Faggins in pass coverage, and either rookie should be a great improvement in run support (tackling ability is far better).

1. The No Brainer - better pass protection
Pass protection begins with the LT. Chester Pitts is a serviceable LT, but I think he could be much more on the right side. If we could slide down 2-3 slots while gaining worthy picks/players, I'd love to see us get our franchise LT with D. Ferguson. If that doesn't happen, we better use at least 2 of our next 4 picks on linemen, and bring in at least one big FA.

2. The Next Big Thing - lack of a pass rush
If it weren't for our pass protection ineptness, this would be the trademark of the team. There is part of me that has a sick curiousity about seeing what we could do with both Babin and Peek at DE on third downs (with Walker and TJ at the DT spots). It looks like a recipe for disaster though.

One of the following two areas:
3a. Carr's Secondary Options - no good targets
It is ironic that Carr gets discounted for not looking at his secondary targets. This is funny for two reasons: he has had the worst pass-blocking team in modern history and his secondary targets (WR2, FB, TE) other than DD have been laughable. While DD has caught a lot of balls, his average yards per catch isn't what you want out of your secondary options. We really need to find a solid #2 WR and a stud TE either this year or next.

3b. The Team's Secondary - matador DB's
I don't remember a secondary that has more guys that get burned than this unit over the past few years. No position has been a house of horrors (whores?) worse than FS. It is really too bad we let the only good one we have had (McCree) go via FA. Instead we have had to endure using Matt "Never Had It, Never Will" Stephens and Marcus "MIA" Coleman. We keep finding SS's that can stuff the run, but are in constant highlight films on ESPN for the wrong reasons. We need to find a CB to play opposite Robinson. A pass rush would help make this unit look like a burn unit.

Anyway, tons of work.

On Offense I'd start up front ..... and in the Center ..... Thats where it all starts . Pitts has been very good since he was moved back to LT after the failed Riley Expiriment . The LT position is in good hands . Center and LG are whats causing all the problems . McKinney is just plain POOR at center . He's average at best at the guard spot . Its much more difficult to mask his flaws at center .....An upgrade to Milford Brown would be nice too .

Next would have to be a second recieving option be it a WR or TE . I wont be picky here . Either will satisfy me for this off-season . When your second reciever is Corry Bradford .... You are desperate .... Remember Bradford was an UFA this past off-season . Not one team made an offer to him outside the Texans .... This tells me one of two things , A) He sucks B) He's overpriced . Ill go with the former here after watching him for the past four seasons .

The third thing would be the defense . Problem here is I'm not sure where to start . It appears that the Texans will switch to a 4-3 . This troubles me because they are ILL EQUIPED to do this with their LB's and lack of a true 4-3 DE .
Wong started at MLB for two seasons in Minnesota before coming here and was solid enough . Greenwood may be a decent OLB in a 4-3 and would possibly be better in that scheme because it would allow him to use his speed more .... But im NOT sold on him . And there is one more OLB position to fill .... who might man that spot ?
As for the DE's ... Gary Walker is / WAS a solid 4-3 DE at one time but age and injury have taken their toll .... not to mention his contract . Can he stay healthy for a full season ? As for the other DE's on the roster , most are better suited to a 3-4 (Travis Johnson , Robaire Smith , Jerry Deloach) They would likely translate to DT's in a 4-3 .

Filling all the holes in a switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in one offseason is just a bit too much to ask , I suppose I would be satisfied if they would just be more aggressive . I Dont care to see a bend dont break defense next season ..... The only thing a prevent Defense does is prevent you from winning .

There are other flaws on this team but you asked for three .... :stirpot:

With us switching to a 4-3 I would think our biggest needs, without considering the players entering the draft would be in our front 7 on defense. We dont have a true DE or MLB.
Round 1 - MLB/DE

Our weakest spot is in our secondary. We have 1 ligitimat starter in Dunta Robinson but the other 3 players wouldnt see the field on most other teams. Glenn Earl played decently his first season and when he was on the field did a decent job last year for us. C.C Brown did alright for a rookie but was very suspect in coverage. P-Buc was a huge disapointment. He was horrible in zone coverage and we didnt use enough man to really evalute his single coverage skills. Faggins proved to me that he belongs in the nickle and dime back spot for now.
Round 2 - FS/SS/CB/TE/MLB/OL

Its obvious that we need help in our TE spot. Bruener should be the #2 TE, brought in mainly for run support. Rivers stepped up at the end of the season but is far from being a threat to any defense we face. I still have faith in Juppru seeing the field and showing us what he's capable of. :yahoo:
Round 3 - TE/DB/OL

Once I saw Pitts take controll of the left tackle possition the thought of drafting a tackle in round one slid from my mind. D'brickshaw is suposedly having an outstanding senior bowl and i'm sure every team in the NFL wouldnt mind having him but why draft a possition where we already have a servicable player taking snaps? :cough:Bush Young:cough: IMO our offensive line needs can be addressed in later rounds of the draft and free agency.
Round 4 - OL/DE/DB
Round 5 - LB/DB/OL
Round 6 - RB/WR/TE
Round 7 - DL/WR/DB

Good take about our defense and switching to a 4-3. Behind our weak pass protection, our defense switching to a 4-3 is probably our second most pressing concern come to think of it. What's even more worrisome is the general feeling that the FO will be concentrating mostly on offense in Kubiak's first year. They'll probably address some of our holes, I'm sure. But I don't expect any major moves to get a big time defensive playmaker this year.

That would suck if we could consistently put up points on the board, but have a weak D that can't stop our opponent from doing the same (ala the KC Chiefs for the past several years).

1. Be in the top 5 in the NFL in every major special teams category.

2. More creativity on offense, actually using a scheme in an attempt to beat the defense (something rarely done thus far in the Texans history).

3. Improved coaching. This is really a catch-all b/c I believe with improved coaching our O-Line can improve dramatically, our defense will be in the middle of the pack, and our team will be significantly improved.

This coupled w/ the draft = 7-9 wins.

I can't do it.

I can't limit it to three things.

In honor of Spinal Tap, my list will go to 11.

1. Pass rush.
2, Secondary play that works better together.
3. A defensive scheme that is easy to plug and play and learn and use athleticism in with young players.
4. Better protection--not just the O-line, but better RB and TE play to help with protection.
5. Actual audibles that say something other than "Oh ****!!!" Better pocket presence by the QB and reading of the defenses.
6. Working on the ball catching skills of our WR. I don't want any more rookie receivers--a wiley veteran with good hands would be nice to have.
7. Better TE play.
8. Some key good locker room free agents.
9. More leadership on both sides of the ball.
10. Coaching that the players can believe in, schemes that are not basic training wheels, a better training camp and preseason and higher expectations.
11. Learning how to win and crush the opponents, not just keeping it close until the 4th quarter to give them a chance to win.

:texflag:

1. Upgrade O-line thru draft or FA to attain 1.5-2 sec of extra pass protection.

2. Solidfy the interior/middle defense DT/ML/SS thru draft or FA to create at least a 1-1.5 sec improvement on pressure.

3. Trade down in the draft to make 1 and 2 a possibility.

#1. Pass Protection-We need to give Carr at least enough time to make his progressions and throw downfield. That anemic passing game was garbage, and Carr still took more sacks than in '04.

#2. Tackling-This gave me fits more than anything else. Our rush defense would've been a LOT better if the first man didn't miss the ball carrier. For example, look to the 2nd Jaguars game. The way Garrard, Taylor, and Toefield blew through our D was nauseating.

#3 Coverage-I don't know what was wrong with this unit. It seemed like every time the other team threw the ball there was a man WIDE open in the middle of the field. You know it's bad when you're worried that the other team will convert 3rd & 20. I think our guys (especially LB's) need to be more physical in coverage, although when they were they got hit by wack penalties.

Im not putting these in any actual order, just the things I'd address as my 3 greatest priorities...

1 - A Defensive leader like an Urlacher or Ray Lewis. We need some1 that will really rev the defensive side up and make them want to hit and hit hard, fast and accurately...

2 - Offensive Line only for the matter of stoppin' the team and David Carr going backwards rather than forwards. The more he stands to throw the more chance we march downfield...

3 - I'm split on a good #2 WR or a top class TE. I am wavering more to the TE because we haven't really ever had 1 yet. A good TE threat would open up holes and routes for our current #2 WR's and RB's as dump offs if need be...

Im sure the FO will choose what they think best suits and whatever they go with I'llaccept as long as it brings more W's n' less L's!

1. simple...O-line
2. ridiculous that we have not had an NFL TE for 4 years
3. stop playing 3-4 soft zone with no pressure!!!!! it is impossible to run a 3-4 zone with zero pressure on the QB...
4. fire capers (check!!)

1-get respectable o-line
2-slowdown the run
3-find more passing targets to free up andre a bit

why are people saying pass rush is a major problem we finished with 37 sacks which was respectable(50 was the best).

getting a few garbage sacks in garbage time does not make you respectable...image burned in my mind: 3rd and forever..big ben drops back...everyone is covered!! 5 seconds....6....7....he heaves it 40 yards down field across his body to the other sideline where some guy who couldn't make it on san fran(wilson) is waiting...nice pass rush

Several of you mentioned that you would want help in the secondary. Woulkd you like Charles Woodson? His contract expired and the Raiders will not resign him.

I liked this post. One of the things it emphasizes is the need for better coaching. I think our hope is that, if everything works out right, we will be a much better coached team, and so we will be a much better team.

My top 3 changes for 2006:

1. Upgrade the secondary. Marcus Coleman needs to go. I love CC Brown but the dude needs to bulk up. I cringe everytime I think about when he tried to tackle Alexander(run up the sideline and up the middle, he just annihilated) during the Seattle game.

2. A TE that does more than block or pass EXCLUSIVELY. We need TE's that can do both, not just one or the other.

3. We need OL help for sure, but I say we upgrade the DEF in ALL areas, particularly DL and Corner. Petey Faggins is not our long term solution, although I woudln't mind seeing start again for this year.

A Corollary to the top 3 changes above: The Texans goal for 2006 should be to get rid of EVERY player that we drafted from the expansion draft, with the possible exception of Seth Payne. Everyone else (i.e Mckinney, Coleman, Walker, Bradford) need to go.

Finally, a thread that has something to do with football. My list based on priority is as follows:

1. Trade out of the #1 pick. Stock pile numerous picks for the next 2 drafts.
A. Swap with NYJ #4. This swap probably gets us this years R3 and R4 as well. We also pick up next years R1, R3 and R5.
B. Now, call me crazy but with the way Cutler has everyone foaming at the mouth I'd say our opportunites to improve our next two drafts just got way better.
C. Swap the #4 pick with one of three teams, Oakland #6, Detroit #9 or Arizona #10. This swap probably get's us this years R4 and R5 as well. We also pick up next years R1 and R3.
D. We accomplish this and we now own the draft for the next two years. 2006; R1-#6, 9 or 10; R2-1 Pick; R3-3 Picks; R4-2 Picks; R5-3 Picks; R6-1 Pick and R7-1 Pick. 2007; R1-3 Picks; R2-1 Pick; R3-3 Picks; R4-1 Pick; R5-2 Picks; R6-1 Pick and R7-1 pick. Total, we would have 24 picks over the next two seasons. Show of hands, could we improve this team with 24 picks over the next 2 drafts???

2. Pick up 2 established FA's. One for offense, one on defense.
A. I know Nalen might have 2-3 good years left so you use his knowledge of the "Zone Blocking" scheme that Kubiak will use to speed up the learning curve for our OL and for tutoring our future centers. His contract could be high but it would be money well spent. I view him as a Bruce Mathews type OL.
B. The 4-3 Defense relies on the MLB as the "Field General". I want a veteran to handle this job and currently, I see no one on our roster who fills that void. I could be pretty happy with L. Arrington. With him getting black-balled out of Washington, I feel he's there for the taking. This guy is ready to play and prove Gibbs wrong for running him out of town.

3. Make a decision on how many roster spots you want to use on RB's. Find an impact WR to compliment AJ. Find a receiving/blocking TE. Focus on DL and DB's. My stance has always been to build your team in the trenches first. They are not reliant on others as much as skill players are to offer the quickest impact. They must draft for the best available position player on each pick. We cannot waste picks on positions that we are flush at or decide to take the best "Available Athlete" at that pick. When I hear that, it tells me the staff didn't do their homework.

We as fans need to be patient over the next two seasons. Next years schedule is absolutely brutal but it's a beautiful way to get a team ready.

I'm in the trade down camp as well but I dont know about trading out of the top 6. Trading down out of the top 3 would get us out of the running for Bush/Young/Leinart. As nice as it would be to see any of those players on the Texans I'm willing to build our superstar rather than draft one. If we trade out of the top 6 we will be passing on key building blocks for offense and defense. If we trade down I'd like to see us get either M. Williams, A. Hawk or D. Furguson. All three would fill a drastic need for our team. Williams and Hawk would help us change into a 4-3 and give us the R.Lewis/ J.Peppers type player on defense we need. Furguson would help us mold our o. line into something respectable and possibly giving us the chance to have a top 5 O.Line in the league.

Also, aquiring all those picks would be very nice but I think there's a limit to the amount of picks each teams allowed to have. I'm not sure on the exact number.. I believe SES posted it a few days ago.

You know, that's a good point... Is there a limit on how many picks you own??? If there is, can you own these picks and trade some off to get down to the maximum allowed picks???

1. Irresistable force - Pass-rushing DE from Hades
2. Immoveable object - OLT stud
3. Cure for the Cover 2 - Good to great pass-catching TE with at least average run blocking skills

These are the three gifts that I would love in this offseason.
