why so quiet on the defensive side of the ball?

just doing searches.. nothing comes up about our DC position. (besides the profootballtalk website) ... I really thought Jerry Gray's name would come up or Bates would come up again.. but nothing.

Richard Smith's name was mentioned a week ago , but :hmmm:

Well we talked to Bates on Friday..I know that.

I dunno..I think there is alot of talking going on behind the scenes between McNair, Kubiak, and Bates & Gray.

I just think they are having a hard time convincing them. Im hoping for Bates.. but Gray would be fine too.. we just need to HURRY and freaking get one of them so we can start bringing in assistants.

I am wondering if it is hard to get a DC in here because he basically isn't going to have much new stuff to work with..Given OL and TE should be our priority (not saying we won't take defense with maybe the 2nd pick or so)

but seems to me if we go Bush #1 we are probably going OL (unless FA) 2nd or 3rd.. Yet I could see us going DL on 2nd rounder if one of the guys slip

Good take. This is what I'm worried about, too. We've got so many areas to address on the offensive side of the ball, which is Kubiak's specialty, that I'm not sure if we'll really address the defense until next year's offseason. Considering the time it takes to put together a solid, consistent o-line, I'm sure this is Kubiak's main priority. A decent defense can be created in one off-season with the right moves. Case in point was the 2002 Texans defense, which actually won some of those games for us.

If you are a good D-coordinator like Bates or Gray and your reputation is on the line, and then look out and see players like Greewood, PBuc, Faggins, Babbin, Peek, Coleman, CC Brown, would you take the job?

Bates wants full control of the D. Like Williams has in Washington. Jerry Gray was offered the DB coach job in Washington, but I dont think he has signed. Ted Cottrel is still out there as well as some other names. R. Smith from the Dolphins is really good with Lbs and DBs, between him and Hoke look for some improvement in that area. Also, I doubt Coleman is here he is likely going to be cut or maybe tried to package in a trade to get a 4 or 5th round pick. Right now I would love to package Coleman, McKinney, and Wade with a pick of our own to get an extra 3rd or 4th. Doubt it will happen and the only team I can think of that might even be remotely interested would be the Cowgirls or Browns.

Anybody else excited Arrington is on the outs in Washington??? Everybody has been pretty miffed on the falling out between Arr and Gibbs. I would love to see our defense add a high caliber LB.

With our defense going to a 4-3 scheme, Arr would fit the bill nicely. Just maybe, by making Babin a true DE he will finally emerge as the player we drafted. Also, picking up Arr would free up a couple of strong picks to be used on the DL and DB. If everyone stays healthy this unit could turn the corner next year.

I was really behind two strong FA being added to the team for the upcoming season and with Arrington on Defense (LB) and Nalen on Offense (C) we have what we need right in front of us.

Not sure if this has been posted yet or not... but this is the lastest from John Clayton on the Bates situation:

Bates willing to sit out: The weekend hasn't done any more to convince Jim Bates to take the Bills' defensive coordinator job, so Dick Jauron will probably have to go in a different direction. Bates is frustrated. He lost the head coaching job in Green Bay to Mike McCarthy and thought he had a good offer to be the Texans' defensive coordinator, but Gary Kubiak decided to go a different direction. The Bills' offer wasn't great, so Bates is willing to sit out two years -- the Packers would pay his salary -- until he finds something that interests him.

It sounds like Bates wanted the job, or atleast was looking forward to an offer...no matter who is on our roster. But I am wondering if things have been damaged by Kubiak being vocal on wanting the tandem DC approach with someone else?

I don't see us pulling much in the Defense. We have a lot of young'uns on the team, so I suspect management will dictate to try them out one more year before sending them packing. If somebody is available in the secondary in the second or third round, I could see that person being picked up. I think this will be one of those areas, though, where management will hope that good coaching and a steady offense will help.

Who the coaches will be, though, I agree that I would like to hear more about this.

Why on Earth would Kubiak not want Bates? I am wondering if it is because Bates wants full control, and Kubiak is not willing to give that. Since Kubiak is a first time HC with an offensive background, I would think giving full control to a coach like Bates would be very appropriate, so I am disapointed in what he has given us in terms of the D so far. I will hold my fire to see what the final hires are.

I think the amount of control along with the fact he is going to make a little under 2 million dollars (2 years) to sit a home are the major factors weighing on the Bates decision to not take any job.

From what I heard on the radio earlier it does indeed sound like Bates wants full control over picking defensive coaches among other things, and it sounds like that has scared a couple teams off from making him an offer to this point. Since we have already extended Hoke's contract, I wonder if that is a problem too since Bates might not want anyone to stick around from last year and may add some extra tension into the decision since we have already extended Hoke. On a side note, I noticed Chick Harris has also been retained as RBs coach.

Do you still think they might hire Jerry Gray as DC?

Maybe other coaches do not want to be part of a team that is heavily invested on the offensive side of the ball, that has large contracts due to older players (Walker/Payne/Coleman), the talent is not that good and most likely have been told that the offense once again will be the focus in the off season, etc.

Today on sports radio 610 they were talking about him as a def cord. they mentioned it will probably not happen. The reason is Bates wants power he wants to hire his own def staff. This truly never happens especially for a new coach to give that much power up.

They were saying he wanted a head coaching spot and now his ego may be playing a major roll on why he has not been hired anywhere yet.

Who on earth is goung to be the DC, beacuse the Texans defense is horrible, i wish they could chosen Greg Williams but the Redskins kept him.

Yeah, I think he is still got a mad on about the GB thing and is just being obstinate and contrary. Seems to be blowing up in his face to try and force the issue with teams he interviews with. Of course, with a couple a mill a year coming in for the next two years he's not real worried where his next meal is coming from.

With how big his ego seems to be, I'mkinda glad he isn't comign here.

The last thing we need is a power struggle in Kubiak's first year.

If you can confuse any team long enough to take Coleman, McKinney and Wade's cap hit, you should be GM! Ain't happening.

On 610 this morning Lance said he thought Hawk would be a better pick up than Ferguson in a trade down. Granado did point out that a 10-12 year Ot with D'Brick's skills might be better as more impact linebackers enter draft each year than OT. I agree with Granado.
