Let's start by looking at the first four games only.

Chicago
Kansas City
New England
Tennessee

It's a new season, we've got a new team, they've got a new team. After watching what your Houston Texans are cooking, seeing what most teams are working with, how so you think the Houston Texans are going to fare over the first quarter of the season?

I hope we go 4-0, but I'm not seeing it. I think we still have a few things to work out, roster wise, rotation wise... I understand if you don't believe we have enough information to say.

I watched the first two Bears Preseason games. I like their front seven defensive front. Their OL reminded me of the Washington Redskins Hogs. I think we lose the season opener.

I can't see us losing to the Chiefs at home three times in a row. If Toro has to drop kick those bastids, we gonna win that game.

Jimmy G... hopefully we have our defense situated & our game plan offense clicking. The Homer in me says we find a way to win this one as well.

Tennessee. They've got a heck of a 1, 2 punch & they can probably slip an uppercut or two in. But we're not losing to the Titans this season. I say we start the season 3-1

Part of me says 2-2. I am just not sold yet.

I dunno if we go 4-0 really, but I feel good about beating all those teams.

I like our team a lot. I think with our offense and Godsey/OB scheming we are going to be dangerous. Even against good defenses. I think against bad defenses we will eat them alive once the regular season gets going. I don't think we've nearly seen the different plays that we'll be using week to week.

IMO we have the tools to play whatever style we need to. From behind, from ahead...bleed the clock...step on the gas. We can attack all areas of the field with OS arm and our weapons. Hopkins can win one on ones in tight coverage. Fuller can take the top off. Braxton, Andersen can make plays underneath and Brax can create after the catch. Fuller can some too and Hopkins has focused on that this season. Not to mention Ervin can get in the slot too. Also jalen strong is really talented as well.

Then we have a good compliment of backs that can catch out of the backfield and make home run plays running and catching the ball.

That said, I don't think our defense will be under as much pressure and they'll be able to let them hang more. And if we get a lead, with our secondary and a rejuvenated Cushing and a potentially devastating pass rush with watt merciless and Clowney and maybe Covington and wilfork some...it's going to be tough for teams.

Not to mention our special teams look improved. We have good coaches too. Izzo seems to have gotten the special teams playing with something extra. We have explosive returners too.

OB, RAC, vrabel, Izzo...there's some solid pedigree there.

No team is going to be perfect but with what we have going i like our chances against all of those teams. Really all the teams on our schedule. I think this is going to be the start of some really good football in Houston for a while.

High side - 4-0

Low side- 1-3

I think we'll be fine but if the team comes out cocky and thinking they are all that, the Bears and what could be a dangerous defense at home liable to shock us. The Chiefs will never be easy. Belichek would love to spoil our dream. Luckily the Titans will probably still be the Titans, but Mariota and what could be a dangerous rushing attack will test our defense

Ok then, this is my honest opinion about the team as of this moment.

I fully support the Free Agent acquisitions of Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller, and the drafting of Will Fuller, Braxton Miller, and Tyler Ervin. The severe lack of playmakers outside of DHop last year was crippling for the offense and the infusion of talent was much needed. I honestly wasn't sold on Fuller and Braxton when they were drafted, I felt they would both be gambles at WR and I thought overall Strong is a better WR than both (I still think he's going to be a very good WR btw). However after watching them both in preseason, I feel my initial reaction to both of them was wrong, as WRs they are better already than I thought they would be. Also I've been pleasantly excited about Stephen Anderson ever since he was signed.

Even before the playoffs last season it was clear that without individual playmakers like the ones mentioned above we would constantly struggle every season upon reaching the playoffs. So again, I want to reiterate that I fully support getting those players. We needed them. Very Very Badly.

The state of the offensive line is troublesome however. Extremely troublesome to the point of being potentially detrimental to the entire season. This could be the first season that BO'b finishes under .500 and I can already place the reason for it entirely on the questionable Oline. Brightside is I do feel like after this season, this section of the team might be the easiest to address and fix. Getting pure playmakers is much more difficult, so again, that is the reason I support the efforts made this offseason.

As for defense, even if Watt misses the entire season I think Crennel does a really good job with the talent we have. Even the expected depth is pretty good for us. (Bollough (sp?), Bouye, Pleasant, Reader). Even worse case scenario I cant see us finishing in the bottom 3rd on defense. Even the special teams coverage looks like it's made a complete turn around this pre-season.

So it basically comes down to coaching. I feel Crennel/Vrabel will at least keep us in games. I also happen to think Teapot is a good head coach, and has the ability to overcome games we should by all rights lose into wins based on gameplans and pure coaching ability. I base this on him outperforming my expectations last year based on what we had available to us at the skill positions on offense last year. I also like how he was able to turn the team around even when it looked like we were completely falling apart. (Miami game)

But I just can't get past my fears for the Oline. I've always felt there are 2 position groups that fundamentally alter whether or not a team will have a successful season or not. Those are QB and Offensive line. I'm not going to crown Os yet, but I'm much more comfortable with him being behind center than Hoyer/Mallet. But this offensive line is scary, and not the good scary. It has potential to torpedo the entire season, and I really feel like it's the one position in the game that even good coaching can't compensate for.

So that is the reason I can see either outcome happening for us this season. I like our chances to win every week, but I see a strong potential for us to lose every week as well. Honestly I'm just going to take whatever I get this season, if it's good it's good, if not, then I won't be completely shocked. But regardless of the outcome, there is enough pure talent on the team for me to be optimistic about the overall future of the Houston Texans football team.

I just want to add one more thing, and I also feel like it's important enough to get it's own post. Someone in the Cardinals gameday thread made a comment I very much agree with (I think the comment was made by scooter). It falls directly into the line of thinking for my first couple of paragraphs.

They said something to the tune of: this season seems to be less about manufacturing offense, and more about letting individual players overpower defenses with talent. I think that is something you absolutely need on offense when you are in the playoffs, and is the difference between a team that can get to the playoffs and a team that can WIN in the playoffs.

(Think the Giants when they were still good, in my opinion they had a wealth of skill positions even if I'm not a fan of Eli at QB. They had a solid defense led by a very good pass rush, and their offense could make sudden plays instead of relying on long sustained drives, even though Coughlin is a long drive kind of coach, and Brandon Jacobs excelled at that kind of thing, they still had Burress and Shockey, (and after them Nicks and Cruz) for big plays when they needed it.)

This is my thought as well. I just don't think we can beat KC and New England with the oline situation as it is now.

3-1. Likely lose to the pats. I agree with the oline concern but I also have seen some quick passing games overcome that

I watched the Bears twice in pre season. I think they are still getting used to schemes and we catch them at a good time

Not in the "any given Sunday" context, but the start of this season feels to me like it could be anywhere between 4-0 and 1-3. It revolves around two things: the current state of the O-line and playing teams with good TE's. With no definitive on JJ's return, I'm not liking the pass rush situation to force the ball out quickly. And the LB corps does not have coverage as a strength. I think this will get exposed in at least the KC and NE games. New QB, patchwork O-line, potentially no JJ and playing good TE's? I say 2-2 to start but not because it will be a goat rodeo like the start of the last two seasons. This team will take a few games to get its legs.

I agree with everything you said. Especially the highlighted areas! :goodpost:

Our history vs the Pats & Chiefs, especially our very recent history against the Chiefs, does not bode well for us against those teams this season so I expect us to lose both games and needless to say I'm hoping I'm wrong. I've had the Texans about a 500 team this year so I'm expecting us to be on that 500 trajectory after the first quarter of the season. In other words 2-2 after 4 games.

3-1 with the loss coming to KC.

I was just going to say this. With Garrapolo at QB for the Pats, I see us beating them. To me, the Bears and the Titans are easy-ish wins. KC seems to have our number for some reason. And don't get me wrong, I would be really happy with a 3-1 start. Shoot, I'd be happy with a 1-3 start as long as we beat the Pats. Hate them so bad

Were so Freakin Awesome, We will go 5-0 thru the first 4 games!

3-1 or 4-0 if Garrapolo and Smith stink it up. I know Cutler will so I don't see Chicago winning.

Mariota is the wild card for me. Going to be interesting if he has progressed from his rookie year.

2-2 or 3-1. As much as I would like to think New England could be a win without Tom Brady starting I still feel that one is going to be tough to win being that we are on the road that game and even without Brady they will be tough to beat.

The KC game is another one that could easily be a loss even though we are at home so for me this is a toss up.

The other two games are anything but a give me but I can see us winning those. I can not see us losing our first game at home.

Can you clarify your stance a bit? You say KC could easily be a loss but then say you can not see us losing our first game at home

We play Chicago to open the season and it is a home game. KC comment has nothing to do with the other. Outside the fact it also is at home and right after the Bears game. Still it is the second game at home and KC seems to have our number as of late. As I said I find this one too hard to calll. It is a toss up. I would like to think we win and will go out on a limb and say we do but I would not be too upset if I turn out wrong given recent history.

My bad, I was sure the Chicago game was in Chicago, hence my confusion

We beat the Bruins. We just have better personnel.
The Chieves beat us. Our chance to beat them was in last season's playoff and we chose not to do so.
The Expatriots give us a thumping. They always have.
We smear the Tacks. Their coaching is bottom of the barrel while ours is average.

OK, I am drinking the Kool-Aid and saying 4-0 even though our o-line concerns me greatly. I don't think KC can make it three in a row. The game that scare me the most is NE. Preseason has definitely highlighted the potential of this team, but there are so many untested variables it is really hard to predict what will transpire come the regular season.

Top defenses together with running QBs are the key factors to me, for predictive purposes, in whether the Texans have games they're "suppose" to win vs. games that could go either way or lose outright.

Chicago should be a game you're "suppose" to win. Cutler can move a little but he's not that speedy guy who'll burn you. I don't think the Bears D is anywhere near top 10, and they really just shouldn't be a good football team this year.

KC - Alex Smith has some wheels and their D is pretty good. However they did just lose Houston and I think someone else too. It's not coming to me. Definitely a game that could go either way. I think this is a game where the Texans offense gets a little more innovative than they'll show against Chicago.

Patriots - It's always been bad news in Foxborough, but that's always been with #12 playing. The Texans have never given up less than 40 points against the Pats at their place. Don't know much about Jimmy G's wheels, never mind whether he can play QB or not. The Pats D is usually pretty good. I actually think this is a winnable game but naturally we get it on a short week.

Inbreds - Does Mariota finally play a game against the Texans? If he does, he's definitely a QB that can use his legs. I don't think their D is going to be rated very high so this is definitely a "suppose" to win game.

Of course I haven't taken into account that the Texans o-line keeps their offense from being consistent. I'm just assuming that will work itself out.

I don't really have a prediction but if I were a betting man, of these choices:
4-0
3-1
2-2
1-3
0-4
I'd put money down on 3-1.

Game 1: Texans defense unleashed!! Chicago is going to skype their 'puters. Texans 1-0

Game 2: KC comes to Houston after mauling the bolts.....they begin their early 5 game losing streak in Houston. Texans 2-0

Game 3: Garropolo gets creamed in Week 1 by Angry Birds, then falls asleep playing with the fishes that ain't "fishes". Texans 3-0.

Game 4: Exotic smash mouth is a good description of soccer.......THAT AIN'T FOOTBALL!!. Texans 4-0.

I'm praying for the offensive line.....what ever it takes!!

My boy bayoudreamn what's good brother? This is Texanballer.

Great prediction.

I think we go 4-0 in the first 4.
The Bears don't match up at any position. Game 1 blow out that will get the fans stoked. 1-0
KC will come in to fight a Texans team bent on revenge after being beaten twice last year, especially if JJ is back. The Texans will take the ball away multiple times and the KC defense will be no match for the speed of the new Texans offense. Even Luke will be punished. 2-0
Jimmy G will get beat up. He is no Tom Brady and hasn't impressed in the preseason. The Texans will go into New England with fire in their eyes and the taste of blood in their mouths after starting 2-0. 3-0
Malarkey doesn't scare anyone with his "Smash Mouth" coaching idea. He's no where near the level of coaching as O'brien. Easy win. 4-0.

How our O-line comes together will determine how well we do. Does no good to have speedy deep threats if Osweiler is running for his life 1.5 - 2.0 secs after the snap.
I'm going to be a homer and figure they'll jell nicely and give Osweiler time to throw and make some creases for L.Miller.

That being the situation, here goes:

Bears - we win. Pumped up for the home opener, we just flat outmatch them
Chiefs - If I'm O'Brien I'm telling the guys we OWE KC an a$$ whuppin' for the embarrassment at their hands in the playoffs. We win a very physical game.
Patriots - I expect O'Brien/Crennell to blitz Garappolo like mad and pressure him into young QB mistakes. Turnovers win the game for us.
Titans - Being a division game this won't be the cakewalk some think it will be. We'll win but it'll be closer than folks expect.
4-0

Yeah that's a :homer: post
sue me.

3-1...the lone loss will either be the patriots or the chiefs.....im thinking it'll be the chiefs...we still can't cover TE's, Smith doesn't turn the ball over much and they have as much talent on both sides of the ball as we do.

Plus Andy Reid has always had our number going back to his days in Philly.

3-1 KC still has our numbers but hope OB can get them amped up to play by reminding them of the beat down in the playoffs
