San Francisco and Vince Young?

DRAMA

Rookie
Not what ya think. This question is for all those people who thought we should've won the game in SF but are HUGE Vince Young fans. Remember this?

"We should ALWAYS WIN...NO MATTER WHAT!!"

Well, instead of drafting 7th, we're drafting NUMBER 1.

Alot of people who said that, I've noticed are also HUGE VY fans. Well, I was wondering something. Would those values hold true even now knowing that Vince Young has declared and could possibly be a Texan?

Just an honest question that probably will not illicit an honest response...

If we lost, San Fran would get the #1 spot, N.O. was #2(still) and we'd be #3.

I think Steve Young(sorry..... Vince) would still be there...... I mean who would pass on Reggie??

The ironic thing, is so many people that wanted (or should I say, "wouldn't have minded") the #1 pick for trade down purposes, may have had a better chance of trading down from the #3 pick than the #1 pick. That is if Casserly and them still played the "sold on David at QB" etc.

speaking as the very prototype you are speaking too (pro vince, wanted us to win EVERY game)

Yes, i could care less about the draft until the second the clock hits offseason...then i discover our draft position, and start thinking accordingly. I dont want reggie if it means a loss, i dont want vince if it means a loss, i want a W. I understand, this makes me an unintelligent fan incapable of seeing the longterm benefits of a loss. All i know is that sunday in a sports bar stunk, and wouldnt have if they had posted the W.

That is wrong. SF didn't have the first slot no matter what happened on the last game.

You are correct, sir. Had Houston won the game NO would get the first pick based on Strength of opponents schedule.

If we had beaten San Fran. the draft order would have been:

1. New Orleans
2. Houston
3. San Fran.
4. Tennessee
5. NY Jets
6. Green Bay
7. Oakland

We would still have had the 1st selection in the 2nd round. We would have had the 2nd and 3rd selections in the 3rd round.

I don't think VY comes out of college if the Texan's are not picking first. I think the possibility of him being able to play for his home town team influenced his decision to come out.

Seeing how divided him declaring has made Texas Football Fans, makes me wish he would have stayed for a National Championship run.

I'm not quite sure what the question is.

Are you asking if the fans that wanted to win all the games would've still wanted to win all the games with the knowledge that Young would be available in the draft and the Texans would have the opportunity to draft him?

If that's your honest question, then my honest answer would be, yes...they should still try to win all the games. Winning that game (SF) still would've put you in the top 3 and still in position of drafting Young.

Were you looking for something a little more controversial?

I think that was a minor factor. I bet the fact that his perceived value really couldn't get much higher had more to do with it.

this is what we mean by the planets lining up....... destiny.... higher power... synergy.... serendipity... there were a few factors that all of a sudden converged to get us to this point right now... one of those factors is an option on David Carr's contract which hasn't been picked up yet.

Like I said before the SF game and i'l say now, i'll never root for my team to lose. No matter what.

I think the only thing, or I hope the only thing, that influenced VY's decision was winning the National Championship. If he based his decision on who was picking first, he either made an unwise move or got and followed some bad advice.

When was the last time a #1 pick played in his hometown?

I wanted to win all the games. Every single one of them. Learning to win is something that a lot of our players need to become better at. There were any number of games we shoulda won that we dint.

I am also a VY fan. One that doesn't believe the Texans will actually pick him, but believes that they should.

Anyhow, I have always believed there are all sorts of talented players in the draft and that rooting to lose for a draft pick is a big fat jinx. (My rational side is trying to say that there is no such thing as a jinx and that there are all sorts of good things that could come from the first pick, and am trying not to think of the horrible things that could come from the pick(s) busting or where the players who we don't pick end up going to).

I always thought if you try, and you play your hardest, good things will happen, even if it wasn't what you were originally wanting, you know, the Rolling Stones rule:

"And you can't always get what you want,
Honey, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime, yeah,
You just might find you get what you need!"

I also must say that my rational side is being challenged by all the VY-Texans destiny talk--that by not picking VY we might angry up the football gods. I know that is super silly to think that--but after watching every single Texans game, and seeing all the weird stuff that happened, and seeing VY's crazy performance last season plus a Rose Bowl that made him hard for him not to declare, it is hard not to think of planets and moons and stars and whatnot aligning.

In other words, I am fighting between my evidence-based, logical, rational side and my superstitious, fingers-crossed, lucky underwear side.

Hoth-Boy's sig:

The bottom line is this: When the worst you can do is R. Bush, how can you lose?

Hmmm, your sig jumped out at me.

I must say that I am probably more naturally optimistic than a lot of people, but I guess my imagination is more vivid than yours. The worst that could happen to us is not picking R. Bush. There are all sorts of ways that this pick could blow up.

Not that I'd give the first pick back, I'm just saying.

Not to mention, that rooting for your team to loose, so you can get a certain pick, that's like stealing. That's almost as bad as the players playing poorly to get a new coach. Or players throwing a game, or shaving points.

It's just not right, and a sign of questionable judgement.

exactly why it would be such a special thing.

No, teams don't pick based on a where a player is from, they pick based on talent and precevied ability to play in the NFL. And it's on that second point where Bush is a better pick then VY. If you want specific reasons search the baord, hell just look for some of my posts I've laid what the magor concersn with V Young enough times that I'm rather sick of repeating them, espically since the disciples of VY don't listem too well to reason.

My sig was an attempt to show some nuetrality on the issue of VY and Reggie. I'd be ok with VY, althought it would lead to a few years of like our first two years; and VY as a QB is still a risk (see Vick). I'd much rather draft Bush and give Kubes some time to work on Carr, mainly because everybody I hear who covers teh NFL ofr a living and those that are citing sources in the league still say he has what it takes to succed in this league. Am I positive of that? No, I think Cass and Capers failure to get David some protection may have permenantly damaged him; but I'd rather find out and be certain he his done then trade him away, watch him resurect a career ala Farve and S. Young; and watch VY fail to level up to the hype here in Hoston.

As an aside, I think there is absolutly no way Vince can live up to the hype being generated on this board. No way!

Now with all that being said, my preference is 1) Draft Bush, 2) trade down (and this option scares me) and 3) draft VY.
