East-West Shrine Game Commentary

aj.

All Pro
Thought I'd start one for people who want to log observations on the game. Starting now on the deuce.
'
Granted, this is Day 2 NFL draft talent but there's some good talent out there.

Well, the West defense sux...

...no wonder -- it's Coach Fran

ESPN 2, aka 'the deuce.'

Reggie McNeal starting for the West.

Big Auburn TE Cooper Wallace - nice catch and long run early

hows McNeal doing?

Very strong game so far...even though he was lucky his touchdown didn't go the other way. Made a lot of plays with his feet, of course.

threw for a touchdown and i stopped watching. He could be a Day 1 WR, but would not be too high on draft boards as a QB.

Kind of a sloppy game as you might expect. No defense to speak of. I think this is one of those games where they limit what you can do on D.

Torry Henderson from Tech is playing well

David Thomas from UT on the TD grab from Drew Olson. He hasn't cooled down a bit.

Interesting discussion about the NFL ball vs, the college ball - NFL ball being slightly longer and narrower -- in the context of why Olson couldn't hit the broad side of a barn until that TD

i see McNeal as a player who can eventually play quarterback in this league, i really do. give him two years and a chance to compete for a job.

Leon Washington - speed to burn ...listed at 5'9" 205

Greg Jennings WR, Western Mich. great leaping catch over the defender. He looked a lot taller than 5'11" on that play

I see what's going on with the defense now. They just showed the rules, No blitzes or stunts, man-free or 3 deep zone only, and the 5 yard chuck rule which none of these guys are used to...

Anyone heard of Marques Colston before that TD? I didn't think so.

I keep waiting for Dwayne Slay to slay someone but I haven't seen him...

The RB got down before Slay was gonna lay him out. Smart RB. heh

Lol, as soon as he caught that screen and started running I told my friend Slay was gonna kill him.

Tommy Jackson from Auburn is impressive at DT

Henderson looks STRONG...so much for questions about him operating in a convential offense.

Tim Day looks like a strong TE, but I hear nagging injuries are a concern for him.

Nice lock-on by Pinegar. Must be something in the water in Fresno.

Vickiel Vaughn S Arkansas, made his presence known on a big time sideline hit.

oh hell yes they do, helps me keep my sanity here :)

Jeez Pinnegar is bad.

edit: aj why'd you take out the shiner comment?

I'm sitting out on my back patio with this old pos toshiba with the sticky keyboard watching the game and sometimes for no apparent reason I lose entire chunks of text and have to retype. I edited a misspell and apparently I lost a bunch of other text with it. Time to upgrade. I added back-in the essence of the Shiner comment. Time to go grab another for the 4th quarter ....

Kevin Boothe from Cornell is a load at G. Must be smart like Seth Payne.

upgrade? Shiner Bock to Shiner Blonde? :heh:

Washington is really short. He's lucky if he's 5'9"

Stupid announcer comment of the day: Gradkowski has the leadership skills of Unitas.

Slay is finally getting some love from the broadcast team

Really small crowd the way it looks. No one in the upper deck

I have not drank Shiner in sometime, but three hours ago I went to Whole Foods to buy a pork shoulder and picked up a six pack. I am on number four. Pouring them into the little Shiner Bock glasses.

This game stinks even with Shiner goggles on.

Yes it does.....

I remember when the old original Shiner was down there with Pearl and Texas Pride and now it's an export. What a deal...

eric henderson looks like a underrated DE right now...looks great...maybe we'll see him in steel blue soon...hoping...taurean henderson can run between the tackles tech offense just never let him...ej whitley is actually playing guard in this game he was our LT this past season...interesting...and of course dwayne slay...before this game scouts were saying 5th round i gotta believe he's improved that...this brock kid linebacker for the west number 59 looks impressive...texas southern...reciever jennings reminds me a lot of donald driver...colstran looks like a slower version on plexico burriss to me

Gradkowski reminds me of the hothead who slides headfirst into home plate during a mixed league softball game. Or at the company picnic.

Reggie McNeal is having some fun now....

PS. mike hass looks like joe jurevious to me...a little shorter but still has those abilities to make things happen...great reciever

What the hell kind of call was that? (the last play at the goal line)

It seems like ESPN was telling them to hurry up so they could switch to the Hula

Hey, why not keep this going?

Brad Smith has always been fun to watch

Surf? Hula Bowl? Surf? Hula Bowl? The locals have spoken in a resounding way.

I thought about going, but none of my friends wanted to go and I'm sick and have a test on Monday so I decided not to go.

as anyone seen brandon marshall this season...this 6'6'' receiver looks really good...this guy will be a redzone nightmare for opposing defenses

just broke free from a hostage situation, but I did sleep @ a Holiday Inn last night :spy:

I'll tell you what its all good as long as its beer  (Shiner comments not withstanding)

what a great game....seriously, very entertaining & alot of future NFL talent. McNeil had a great game, he has a stronger arm than he is given credit for, what concerns me about him is his strength and susceptibility to injury. He would be a good late rd. draft pick to develop and condition to get stronger and recognize coverage & he will need protection. bottom line I like this kids game, realize talent and be willing to select him in the 5th rd.

Mike Haas, WR Oregon State. would be a great #2. can adjust to the ball & creates seperation. has possibly the surest hands of all the receivers in the draft, probably late 2nd to early third. would the Texans take a chance?

OR

Marques Colston, WR Hofstra- http://www.hofstra.edu/Athletics/Fo...fm?gameID=E07D5026-65B3-F1F2-67C86575BF964E82 played a great game & could be a terrific NFL WR (Colston had five catches for 82 yards and his 6-foot-5 frame caused headaches for defensive backs. "I'm 6-5 for a reason. I just went up and got it," the Division I-AA receiver said. "I think I came out here and put on a pretty good showing.")

Dwayne Slay SS is a headhunter plain and simple his effectiveness depends upon his getting into the heads of the receivers because he backpedals too much then reacts, I would like to see more man to man coverage skills besides the espn highlight reel. very physical emtional player.

Joe Toledo OT (Washington Huskies) good in pass protection, late rd potential @ 6'6" 290 he could be another Khalif Barnes, very impressed.

sleeper pick- Rob Sims OG Ohio State appeared to me at least to be the protypical NFL road gradder massive frame for a Guard @ 6040 320lbs played the LG position and was the reason Howard scored three tds (reg. season had two all year) man I really liked this kids style, not as athletic as Davin Joseph but a solid 3rd pick for the Texans. bio- http://ohiostatebuckeyes.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/sims_rob00.html

beerlover, i really like mike haas also, definitely the best hands in the draft, great route runner, good blocker, and a hard-nosed player

i think he should get a look with one of our 3rd round picks if he is still available.

YEAH!!!

Everyone is getting on Slays wagon!! We need a defensive headhunter. Would you cross the middle of the field? How about for a Klondike bar?

Aggreed. I still believe he is not a day one QB. But he will make a team this summer. I said in an eariler post that he would not make it, but he looked very good today.

Slay- the guy can hit we all know that, but he showed that in coverage he really is below-average. I see him as a 4th rounder or low 3rd. He is going to have to gain a little weight and move to SS.

Rocky McIntosh- Damn this kid looked great, fast, strong, shedding blocks, and showing his hands. The kid is likely in the same rounds as Slay, but he would be the best pick for us if he is around in the 4th. He is a poor-man's Vilma very similar to Will Witherspoon

Reggie McNeal- If he was willing to switch to WR that would be great, other than that he is not much better than Seneca Wallace other than he has size. He should switch and become an Antwaan Randle El clone.

I don't know a lot about Hass. I recall hearing the analyst saying he didn't have great speed but he has everything else.

He had only 2 games this year where he didn't have 100 yards receiving.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=133965

If Gaffney isn't re-signed, the Texans are in a world o' hurt at WR, although Armstrong could thrive in this new system and be the Gaffney replacement unit. Hass as a third rounder sounds reasonable -- several of the current draft rankings (gbn, nfldraft scout.com, draft countdown, etc,) have him as the #10 or so WR in this draft so that could put him anywhere from late second on...

there must be a reason he is so productive, even without measureables like speed & strength with so much competition at WR. sure I've seen a bunch of guys with more talent but very few if any that were more productive & you gotta remember the Beavers had a below average team this year (through no fault of Mike Haas). despite his productivity he will need a strong combine & show that one of the reasons is he does have deceptive speed, 4.5 good route cuts/routes, shuttle times, is stronger than he appears, 13-15 reps & smart, Wonderlick score post 40. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/closer/020228.html
