Vince Young, $79 autographs???

I hear Vince Young was at a Houston autograph show, charging $79 for unpersonalized autographs and $99 for a photo with him. The guy has been a player eligible for the NFL draft for all of two weeks, and this? Wow. I think whoever advised him on that move was an *****. IMO, this doesn't help in winning favor with Houston fans who want Reggie Bush, and trying to sell yourself as the No. 1 pick.

you know....

I hope the Texans draft Reggie Bush and Vince ends up in Tennesse...the other original Texas Team. I think it would be fitting that the 2 best players in Titan's history would be Texas legends from UT.

That and I'll love watching him stomp Houston over and over again for slighting him and Texas football by taking a California hoser.

Here is to hoping that Vince drops to 18 and that Jerry has the sense to draft him if he does. :P

I wonder if VY's monthly income right now is equal to the other famous people selling autograghs at this event? I don't want to hear "the guy is about to make millions" either because right now he is not getting any game checks. He is signing autographs with present millionares that are also doing signings...do you have a problem with them? People go to this show "expecting" to spend money. This is not some random autograph signing on the street.

People like to assume when someone becomes the talk of the town they hit instant wealth and that's far from the truth. Is he a future millionare?...yes, but right now he has to make $ to make ends meet until the season gets underway. Its no different than temp work inbetween semesters and he has every right to sell a product at any price as long as people are willing to buy...its called America. Famous people except fees from networks to make appearances on shows or to do sitdown interviews...this is no different.

Bush has insurance on him in case he slips in the shower...he would get $4mill I believe if he could not play. Not bad for someone who has not played an NFL down...oh, and that's his right.

Personally, I never understood people's facination with autographs so I select not to buy them because they do nothing for me...that's my right.

You want to talk truth? He already has an agent, who will be only too happy to float him damn near whatever cash he wants until he signs his deal. That is how pro sports agencies and big-name celebrity players do their business.

As it is, I doubt he pays for a damned thing anywhere he goes in this city right now.

I don't like the move: to me, it is cheap. To me, it is just greedy. But I'm not going to condemn the guy for it. I will simply assume it is some rep of his that is in his ear about it, and not Vince's apparently already inflated ego that was making the decision.

I too don't care too much about autographs, and I would not be going if he was giving them out free. But to me, it is simply a bad PR move.

Bush getting insurance and Vince charging for autographs is two completely different things, Bush got insurance in case he hurts himself and cannot play, he is paying premiums on that insurance (it has to be very high premiums for that kind of policy) to make sure that he can support himself and his family, while Vince is being a cheapskate and charging people that he wants to have supporting him just to have him scribble his name on a piece of paper, that's pretty ridiculous to me, especially for $80. This guy hasn't even been drafted yet, and this story makes me want to hope that he falls farther in the draft and ends up being this year's Aaron Rodgers that falls down to the 20s and loses a whole lot of money in the process.

There are many Dallas Cowboys fans that hope your wish comes true.

Slander, Who cares besides you.

The UT Co-Op is advertising a $50 National Championship football. The same ball signed by VY is $120. So I think a carpe dieme bar has been set.

Slander? It is quite factual

And how is he saying "thank you" to his thousands of fans in Houston?

By appearing at a sports memorabilia show this weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center and charging $79 for his autograph. It will be his first autograph show.

Somebody needs to give Young better advice. First impressions count.

I know, he's a professional athlete now, and pro players charge for their autographs. Still, it's a greedy, disgusting aspect of modern sports.

The last place he should do his first autograph show is Houston.

It gets greedier. A sign will be posted:

No Inscriptions. Due to Vince wanting to meet as many fans as possible during this appearance, he will be signing his name only - no inscriptions."

So for $79, little kids who worship Young won't even get "To Timmy" with their autograph.

He's the only athlete at the show who's refusing to do inscriptions.

The "no inscriptions" rule is so Young could meet more fans?

Or sign more $79 autographs?

And if you want your picture taken with Young, that'll be $99 more.

It's not like Young needs the money. He has an agent who'll float him all the money he needs until a shoe contract comes along. In April, an NFL team will draft Young and pay him millions.

Of course, Young is entitled to do autograph shows. The money is great, and it's part of the spoils for quarterbacking UT to the national title and turning pro.

But just don't do it first thing in your hometown, where you're a hero and where fans are screaming for the local NFL team to draft you.

Sounds pretty ridiculous to me. I'm not overly big on gettnig autographs, but I did want to get one of the entire Texans team and got most of them to sign an autograph for me and none of them tried to charge me anything and they all did so in a pleasant manner, and I got a personalized one from a couple of them too.

Nobody is giving out anything free at this event and the guest are invite only. If he won a Superbowl and was a millionare I believe it would not rub you nearly as wrong...that's what baffles me. If his agent is forking him a ton of dough then thats also news to me...I don't have an agent but apparently some of you do.

Many are saying Bush came out early only if certain he would be selected #1=#1 $$$$. Is he greedy?

Sports and greed go hand in hand. If it didn't a family of 4 would not have to sacrifice a paycheck to go to a game...

Listen guys. Alot of the athletes (carr, clemens, AJ, d. davis) sign an exclusive rights deal with one of the promotional companies. the cfompany then decides the amount to charge based on demand (VY's is obviously high) and noteriety. Tri-Star sucks for doing this. I used to go to their big shows every year when I was younger and got HOF's like Willie Mays, Don Drysdale, and Stan Musial combined for less than what they are charging for Vincent Young.

Again, that is random...not at an autograph show. You can go to a dealership and sit in a Viper for free or you can pay a fee and enter a car show...

The Man been poor all of his life, can he make a decent amount of chump change to support him and his family for all his blood, sweat, and tears he had to go through? Hard work and dedication? I mean if his stock is hot right now; why not cash in on it? Nothing in life is guaranteed and IM a Bush to Houston Suppoter.Mostly Rich Kids go to those shows anyway; If it's not Vince Young it will be somebody else filling that spot.

How much money you think UT is getting for all the media coverage and National Champions T-shirts,Hats,and gear? Way more than what VY is getting at that measly show. It's all a business. Sports in Genereal. :homer:

Vince obviously has the right to sell his autograph if he wants to (although I wonder how much of that he's actually pocketing if this was at a sport memorabilia show and how much is going to the people in charge of the event), but if he's made it this far thru his life I'm pretty sure he can make it another 3 months before he gets his $15+ million signing bonus and I still think it's cheesy that they're selling autographs for $80 and I'd never pay that much for one, but if they can find chumps to buy it then I guess why not do it?

They charge that much during mass signing sessions to keep people from reselling the signed items for twice the amount.

Because that's not what I would do if I just paid $80 for a signature ... I wouldn't look to flip it for a profit.

?

When they were $25-$40, guys owning sports memoriabilia shops would send multiple kids in to get them to sign things then sell them for $100 or more in their shops.

That is why the athletes charge so much now, because the market price for autographs is set through these shops, which they are trying to take out of the equation.

Well, I got a All-Star game Baseball signed by Lance Berkman himself for only $39. I got to shake his hand and talk to him for a brief moment.

The worst thing that happens at the Tri-Star shows, is the fact that David Carr has yet to appear at one.....nor any of the Texans "big stars". They simply sell autographed items at 10x the worth. My big deal was to have a Texans FB signed by all of the Texans #1 (first rd) picks over the course of the team's history....that way I'd have a FB for every year (one for every #1 draft pick). But once Carr became distant from the public....my plan was shot to hell.

I do not "collect" memorablia/ autographed items to turn a profit...I do it for the memory of meeting the players and having a breif conversation with them.

So far, Berk & Adam Dunn have been my favorites (next to the best fan favorite sports figure - Jose Lima). Too many of these guys get big heads once they start getting the dough.

Oddly enough, baseball players are the best.....then football, then basketball (of the major sports)... at signing autographs.

Young has done nothing in the league and is not helping his cause as a fan fav.....he has shown the fact that all he cares about is the $$$$ (why else would he LOVE to play for the Texans - assuming they keep the #1 pick - - - it's the fat contract!). WHo cares if he has been poor all of his life. He'd rather tick the fans off and do this (with a HUGE contract right around the corner) than to embrace the fans?

P O S!!!!

Is it a crime? No. Is there a market? obviously. Is there demand? Heck yes. Has there been supply? No.

If you follow any college sports (football, basketball), this thing happens a lot once seniors play there final games. Kind of a parting memento from the player and a legal (NCAA) gift in kind to the athlete.

That doesn't surprise me all that much, really. Now, if he starts charging 20 bucks for a sniff of his Rose Bowl jock strap ... then I might bring some character discussion to the table.
