Wow Beer this is an interesting mock. Like some, hate some. TE with the first pick in the second I absolutely hate and would be a huge waste of a pick. Pope is a good prospect, but he is not Gates, Gonzales, Shockey, or even Winslow, so I wait till at least the 4th for a TE. The Pariots will not take a G. They got Logan Mankins last year and if they go anywere in the first it will be T or defense. Broncos will go Offense this year seeing that they have CB and LB locked up, but if there is a stud Safety they may go that route but Ryans is no safety. Jags Devin Hester I think is one of your best picks, because they are known to just take athletes and find a place for them. The Steelers are very solid at LB and have most signed for years, so look for them to shore up the secondary or take a look at a RB if one falls. Callaghan is a second rounder pure and simple so you might need to find another pick on that one. AJ Hawk going before a top DE is not really gonna happen. LBs do not get a higher grade than DE at the top of the draft. Plus Hawk is not a freak like most Lbs have to be to be up that high. The Michael Huff pick is great and I see that happening, but if not him then AJ Hawk will hit right there. Also look for Winston Justice to go to the Cards and Eric Winston to the Lions. That will likely throw some wrenches in your draft, but just looking at it it is definately a solid starting point for before the combine and senior bowls. Good Work.

Good job, everything looks like it could happen. Except for the OT from Cal going in the first, I think that Witworth from LSU would go before him.

the Texans make this move only
  1. Pope is available
  2. the Texans select Vince Young with the 1st pick

I'm not completly sold on this pick here either, but they could decide to finish the line now and forget about it. Both the LT Kaczur (100th) & LG Mankins (32nd) where rookies drafted in the 2005 draft. Gilles is ready to start @ RG & New England needs to establish a running game again to balance all the passing (in their playoff loss they only rushed for 79 yards while they passed for 341 yards). If one of the top 3 RB slips they may take one or as you suggested they need defensive help especially in the secondary maybe a Jason Allen from Tennessee assuming his health is not an issue.

this was a BPA pick. DeMarco Ryans is a player (actually would not mind the Texans drafting him in the 2nd rd. if he slips anymore). I have to do some more research, but I believe they are also in cap hell & way over meaning they won't be able to resign many if any of their own free agents especially with a strong playoff/Superbowl showing. So I guess I might be more inclined to change this pick to a pass rushing DE like Elvis Dumervil, Louisville.

cadahnic said:

Chad Greenway just looks like he was made to wear the black & gold. Again more of a BPA pick.

Not very many out here got a chance to see Ryan play but he does have the potential to be a franchise LT @ 6070 365 lbs. the Chargers need to address their offensive line. I don't grade Whitworth quite as high, to me he is more of a NFL guard/RT but thats just me.

cadahnic said:

The reason why AJ is rated so high are his leadership intangibles. He will be some teams director of assingments on the field & he does have the speed needed from sideline to sideline to be a factor on every down. I'll stand by my assesment that his selection this high is warranted.

I cannot see the Cards passing on a elite RB wheather it me DeAngello Williams or LenDale White. I honestly believe both of these backs are better than the three taken in the top 10 in last years draft. so they represent both excellent value and address a need. As far as the Winstons go there is no way I would take Eric over the USC right tackle Justice just too many questions about his acl and full mobility.

Good pick for the Lions. They have needed a OL stud for some time.

Deangelo to the Cards seems a bit odd, since the drafted a RB with their 2nd round pick last year.

I like the Pats going LB, but why would they pass on Greenway?

Also, I'll have the Broncos going with Pope.

Good mock overall BL.

Cheers!

I would like to point out that the Texans have needed a stud OLineman for our entire team history.

Pretty good mock draft though, other than I still don't like the Vince Young pick, and I really doubt Devin Hester will grade out as 1st round talent, and I'm not sure the Colts will go OLine in the 1st round, but otherwise I could see most of these other picks happening.

seems I could kill two birds with one stone just by dropping Davin Joseph to the 2nd round and the Texans, since anyone who knows me knows I love this kid and that he be a success for whatever team draft's him because he is talented, hard working and flexible to play almost every O-Line position....I could understand however if the Colts react in a way to protect Manning after yesterdays line performance, I don't know how much more a scheme can help given lack of overall talent.

I dont rememebr if i have asked you before Beer, but if your scenario plays out and Houston takes VInce Young, why not take his own TE, David Thomas. We could prolly pick him up in the fourth round, or if his stock increases we can use our second third rounder on him. By doing this, we can give Vince a target(when he is ready) a talented TE that he is familair with. We also can now use our second rounder on YOUR Boy Davin Joseph. Or maybe we can grab some OT that falls. Perhaps we want to get somebody to help our pourous D in round 2? The options can be moreso this way. What are your thoughts on this?

If you hve already responded, my apologies in advance

Looking back at it, I definitely don't like taking Vince and then a TE in the 2nd round and not drafting any OLinemen in the top two rounds.

It all depends how the Texans approach this off season.

  1. Is it time for reconstruction
  2. Or a time to address current needs

I'm in favour of whatever makes the Texans a winner and enjoyable game time experience. so to address your question I would be in the reconstruction camp. we all know how extensive and riddled our defense & offense have become in what seems like a overnight train wreck, but in fact it has been a four year coming train wreck. If we address needs only in the context of this current team like keeping David Carr and spending high draft picks to protect him it does not guarentee success anymore than starting over from scratch & taking a proven leader and winner in Vince Young. I'd rather take a chance with Vince Young as my QB and look to him lead a 2-14 team back from the depths of the NFL celler than a David Carr anyday.

awtysst I'm not sure if you've seen Pope perform before, have you? Actually it was other members of this forum who where touting him first, but after watching him play he is not Antonio Gates, I beleive he could be better. He has intangibles @ 6070-6080 with speed 4.6 forty, and hands of a Basketball Player. Also with a fleet QB like Vince his one negative (blocking) could be a positive since defenders will try to engage him so he cannot get into his routes, hence pulling with him an end or LB who he can easily out jump for the ball.

I like your idea of Dave Thomas in the 3rd or 4th round but if the Texans go Vince Young I think this gives him a better chance to be successful than any other TE, frees up Andre Johnson and creates more mismatches. At least thats my personel opinion, I could be wrong :stirpot:

your in the "current needs camp" I can understand that. if I was the one who had made these decisions that brought us to this point in time I too would be trying to find resolution and vindication with my 5 year plan (Casserly). :pigfly:

Beer, to be honest, no I have not seen Pope. I have read about him but its hard to get a picture in your head from a few words on a screen. I look forward to the combine to see some of these players go out and jockey for position. I will say this, we do need to look at a blocking/catching TE and work it into our system. I am sure Kubiack will do that when he gets here.

In my mock that I am preparing I have the Texans taking Thomas, but I am getting intruiged by Pope. If he can block and catch, we can be quite versatile out of the backfield. Defenses will see him and not know if he will blcok or be a receiver. THAT is the value of a TE and is something we have not exploited in Htown. I realize that Joppru has had bad luck, but at Pope could be a nice insurance package. Plus, if Joppru comes back, how nice would it be to be at the goal line and have both Joppru and Pope lining up!

Sorry guys but I just could'nt resist comparing Mel Mock to Beerlover Mock :stirpot: I would like to point out that my Mock was posted prior to Mel's Mock and that I have it on good authority that he does come to this board from time to time and that he might have been here earlier in the week as a matter of fact. anyway I'm a Big Kipper fan, have always loved the draft so its exciting to match wits as it where and see how it looks :) as a side note even though we don't agree with the 1st pick we do match picks down the board three times, and address several teams needs but with different players he just has some rated higher than I think they should and vise versa. I look forward to reworking the draft over the course of the next three months, however I'm of the opinion mine is better than his :homer:

Ughh, please, not the Vince mock...
ok, now that im past that, here i go:
Pack will more then likley go after DAngelo Williams, not a LB. Their D was not that bad, they also need to give Bret a reason to come back.
Saint have a $50M contract with Deuce, they are going QB, no amtter what, that means Bush/Dbrick to Titans...
I see the 9er's helping out Alex Smith on O, but there is not much available there, maybe they go for LenDale White, other then that, not much choice other then D
The Bills had the worst run D in the NFL, both their DT's are old and Sam Adams might be gone. I would look for someone like Ngata there, if he can translate to a 4-3.
Lions go 4 straight years on O? Eghh, its Matt Millen, anything could happen...
I doubt Browns go for a RB, Reuben Droughns is prob. their second best player, look for some O-line or D help.
I odnt think Minnesota feels it needs a workhorse back...thier system isnt too bad, maybe look for O-line help or more work on the D, perhaps at LB
I doubt the Chargers go O-line here, I think they will look for someone on the outside to replace an aging McKardell, maybe Derek Hagan from Arizona.
Chiefs had a good D-line showing this season, I think they will go for an O-lineman, with all three of their ProBowlers getting old in a hurry, perhaps Gilles.
The Pats will try to fix their secondary, it has not been the same since Ty Law left, plus they always seem to have injuries on D.
Bengals will more then likely get a DT, they were soft against the run. I could see Rod Wright here, maybe DT from LSU or the one from Michigan, cant remeber their names.
There is no reason for the Colts to go for O-linemen here. They gave up 20 sacks and Edge was in the top 5 in rushing. They will probably continue their trend of drafting on D, maybe the top ranked corner.
DJ Williams, Al Wilson, Ian Gold. There is no reason to go for a MLB here.
Also, if Ryans or Abdul Hodge slip, look for the Texans to goble them up, even with the contracts Wong and Greenwood have...

well, i guess i butchered your draft a little, i am sure by the time april gets here, we will all have a much better idea of what is going on. i appriciate the work, thanks..

I do have one correction to make and that is I only agreed with Mel TWICE not three times as stated (10. Arizona -- DeAngelo Williams & 14. Philadelphia -- Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State)

personally, i dont like it very much.

texans wont take young, please everyone, they wont do it

no way the titans take ferguson over leinart

the bills wont take huff, they need a run stuffer. their secondary is decent with clements, milloy, vincent, and terrence mcgee(who is getting much better)

i think kyle boller gets one more year in baltimore, so i dont like cutler there

ryan o'callaghan is a 2nd rounder at best

charles gordon is a 2nd or 3rd rounder

vernon davis is at least a top 15 pick, most likely top 10, no way he drops to #26

devin hester in a very raw player and doesnt really have a true position. he is basically just a kick returner, and i dont see anyone taking a big risk on hester in the first round.

demeco ryans will not drop to #32

darryl tapp is undersized and he is definitely a 2nd rounder

the Texans make this move only
  1. Pope is available
  2. the Texans select Vince Young with the 1st pick
:coffee:
why. that makes no sense. david carr doesnt need a te??wtf????

Cleveland - Lendale White?

After they just picked up the guy that nearly broke Jim Browns single season rushing record? Doubt it. RB is one of the only positions locked up on the browns, Romeo's going defensive front seven (and has even said so)

can't hit what you can't see :spy: Carr needs protection first thats why, if they retain his services, by going Vince with his height and mobility plus his own playmaking tendancies like using his TE's it makes all the sense in the world.

well I may have to alter this a bit since I've felt they have coveted a LT for a while, but I would not buy into defense just because Romeo is a defensive coordinator first. LenDale White if still on the board at this point represents great value, but after seeing DeAngleo size from the Senior Bowl I will probably move him up to take his place with the 10th pick :twocents:
