Casserly up next on ESPN News

He basically just talked about Matt, Reggie and Vince all being great talents. And of course stated that we hold the cards being in that 1st overall spot. In a sense he took a little steam out of Vince's Rose Bowl performance saying that Fresno State basically scored at will against usc. Stated we haven't even got our new coach yet and he will have some imput there as well. Said you don't draft a guy because of where he's from, you draft him because of his talent. Talked again about Matt, Reggie, and Vince all being great talents

Sounded so so at best regarding vince. did anyone else get that impression?

Same impression I got...All he basically said was that it would be the coach's call and that trading down isn't out of the question...

I am convinced Charlie just likes to hear himself talk. Whatever happened to playing stupid? Wait, Charlie does know how to play that game. :)

My gut feelings says it's a Bush draft and we'll keep Carr, in spite of what the public demands.

We'll still get to see Young play, though....twice a year. ;)

Sounds like basically they are not going to show their hand and we won't know until April when the Commisioner says" And with the number one pick in the draft, The Houston Texans select....."

April can't get here fast enough:popcorn:

If Young is so good that we are considering taking him, not Leinart, with the 1st pick, then why would NO pass him over with the 2nd pick?

I really think the Texans are going to trade down. He didn't sound like he was set on any of the top 3. He did talk about the trade with NO when he got their entire draft. He said you can't pass up a deal like that. He is going to trade down. I just get that feeling.

It wasn't that good of a deal when you break down all the actual players the picks ended up going for.

Because Casserly used just three of the Saints picks to stock the Redskins roster and traded the others away, Ditka's critics never bothered to figure out just what players were ultimately tagged in the slots vacated by New Orleans.

The following is a record of what teams took what prospects with the draft choices New Orleans sacrificed for Ricky Williams:

Round-Player-Year Team Position Player
1-12-1999 Chicago Bears QB Cade McNown
3-71-1999 Chicago Bears WR D'Wayne Bates
4-107-1999 Washington Redskins LB Nate Stimson
5-144-1999 Chicago Bears LB Khari Samuel
6-179-1999 Denver Broncos TE Desmond Clark
7-218-1999 Denver Broncos WR Billy Miller
1-2-2000 Washington Redskins LB La'Var Arrington
3-64-2000 Washington Redskins DB Lloyd Harrison

So the rundown is basically the same as usual..Charlie acted surly, defensive and like a know it all and then decided nothing.

Trading down has always been my preference. They can fill a whole lot more holes on the team, and in a way dodge this whole media frenzy. It might infuriate both camps on the Reggie Bush/Vince Youngdebate as we pass up on both playmakers, but at the same time it takes possibly the most difficult draft decision in years out of our hands, and I think it would be the most beneficial decision for the overall betterment of the team, assuming we can get a decent trade offer.

That would be crazy. I know it's an option the Texans are playing with but by gosh that would really be seen as a punk way out.

Trading down is my preference, but when you throw Casserly into the mix it makes me cringe as to what he'd do with those extra picks. I don't even trust him to make the best pick.

Look at what Vinny posted from the Ricky Williams trade. The only standout was a high draft pick (Arrington) and that was the following year.

I'm just not sold on picking up numerous mid to low level talent, when you could draft a potential superstar.

Come one now. With a few more first round reaches on directional college tweeners and undersized one year wonders who knows what this defense could accomplish?

I have no idea how Casserly is still employed, but If I were Mcnair I would not allow any trading of draft picks ever, and make Casserly simply take the highest player off of Mel's big board (with some position needs factored in). While that's far from optimal for teams with a good GM and scouting department, we would easily be ahead of the game if that's what we did the last 4 years. Sad.:brickwall

why? if some team backs up the truck for that pick, then why not?

In CC's defense (not that I am one of his defenders,) he at least seems to finally be playing closer to his vest now. I was thinking it wasn't too intelligent to be showing his hand this early in the game.... sorry for 2 poker references in the same post.

Whether they trade down or not it comes down to one thing...what you do with whatever picks you use. I'd rather the team take Bush, if that's who they think can help them the most than to trade down and not get the best players. I realize it's a guessing game when you trade down, but I'd still rather have one superstar than a handful of supporting players. That being said, if they can get a 1st round and 2nd or 3rd for next season along with a another 2nd or 3rd this season it would be hard to pass up. Looking at what the Redskins did with the Ricky Williams bounty is difficult since they did trade those other picks and I'm not sure what they got with those trades, but if Casserly drafted better in 1999 he could have come away with some good players from that trade. That 12th pick and the 71st went to the Bears so they could move up to take Champ Bailey. Good trade and a good pick. The Bears made a mess by taking Cade McNown with Jevon Kearse and John Tait on board. They had Joey Porter and Dat Nguyen available in the 3rd. The Texans are in the driver's seat. Hopefully, they can figure out how to get this party going.

I think one reason NO might pass over VY would be that they already play in a division that has Michael Vick and therefore those defenses they will be playing most often will kinda already be up top speed with the kind of game VY would bring.

I still think Vince would go to the Saints and Leinart goes to the Titans. At least thats how I see it. I have been known to be wrong once or twice.

Did they move back the draft this year or something? April 29th seems kind of late to me. Anyway, I still think that the Texans will draft Reggie Bush and pass on VY. Even though I'm a VY fan I don't think the Texans will let go of David Carr after all he's been through. I don't like to say that the Texans "owe" him a fair shot or anything like that, but I think the Texans want to give him another chance to see if he can lead this team or not. I think Bush will help this offense diversify a lot and he will take some pressure off of DC. As much as I would like to see VY in a Texans uniform I just don't think it will happen because that will mean that the last four years have been a waste of time. At this point right now if I had to bet money I would say we pick Bush but April 29th is a long ways away and a lot can happen between now and then. So we'll just have to wait and see...

The draft is held on the last weekend of April every year...It was actually just early last year, taking place on April 23 and 24...

I think the Titans would actually opt for Leinart, because they'd love to reunite him with Norm Chow. I don't see any reson why the Saints would pass on VY.

You definitely could be right, man. That's why I added the " ;) " after my statement, because it's all up in the air.

I just figure it's our luck as Houston. Watch the hometown hero go to our most hated rivalry and succeed. It's our life story.

Did we make a deal with the Sports devil to go to the World Series?

After going to the WS, everything in Houston sports has been garbage. Just when we feel like we are finally getting a break by drafting Reggie Bush, we have to deal with the Vince nightmare.

I thought it was always held earlier in April (2nd or 3rd weekend). I looked back to the 2000 season and this is the first one that is the last weekend in April.

LOL! Made a deal for the Rockets champsionships, and lost our NFL team.

Now we made a deal for the Astros to get their first NL penant (and a trip to the WS in the process) and we get stuck with a 2-14 team!

Yikes! No more deals! :D
