Charlie Casserly ????

SportsJunkie

Practice Squad
I am new to these message boards and am sure someone has the quick answer, but how did Mr. Casserly survive with his tremendously poor draft record. It seems like when a player does not pan out he is always quick to point out that "he was a coache's pick". He only takes credit for the one's that work. I think his biggest problem is always trying to outsmart everyone and hit the homerun rather than take the obvious pick. He would much rather take some kid with lots of potential from South Idaho State than the obvious pick who has proved themselves in the SEC, Big 10 or any other major conference. Trading down last did get us the Saints #2 this year think.

I cringe at how this guy will screw up this years draft!!!!

It's a scary thought isn't it? Our only hope is that he doesn't have as much of a say in the draft as he has in the past.

Maybe he's being kept around so Reeves can lean from him, the nuts and bolts of the job not how and who to draft and trade.

Or maybe to be a scapegoat when we only 6 or less next season.

You're not the only one wondering. The guy has been flat out awful, and not just in the draft, where he is mediocre at best. Free Agency, trades, and decisions on who to sign, release, and overpaying for our own FA's are some other areas. I wouldn't mind if he stayed on more of the business side, but get him the hell away from deciding who is on this team.

One reason why McNair hired Dan Reeves...is to keep a close eye on Casserly. Now if that isn't a vote of confidence....lol.

How about letting Reeves make all early round selections and Charlie can look for that diamond in the rough in the 6th round. :redtowel:

He won't screw up this draft if he goes with the safest pick, Bush.

We will ask for his head in 2 years, guaranteeed, if we get VY as it becomes obvious he will need more seasoning.

How about letting Charlie go, he has already done so much damage with his draft expertise!

The Casserly question has been posed with no real answers forthcoming. Definitely none of us here have an idea, because he'd be gone if it was up to popular opinion.

My guess would be that maybe Casserly didn't have as much say in personel decisions as the coaches did. Perhaps he was told who to get and that's his job, plus managing the salary cap. Who knows? Mr. McNair, and he's not letting us see behind that curtain.

And welcome to the Texans funny pages, SportsJunkie. :howdy:

Most smart GM's don't let you know what they are going to do, but Charlie has this habit of "never shutting up!" I have heard that he is Chris Mortenson's insider at the Texans also.

When is the last time we made a "surprise move" that the newspaper didn't talk about for a week. Dan Reeves!

Why? Charlie didn't know about that one. :)

I really don't understand why he was retained. He is a "lame duck" GM. He will make decisions solely based upon saving his job this year. He has had some of his power removed and whenever I hear him talk now, I feel like I am listening to a dead man. He is in reactionary mode, and that is never a good thing for a coach or GM. They should fire him now and put in Reeve's man, Ron Hill. I'm not a big Hill fan, but at least he wouldn't be a shell of a GM.

Obviously Dan Reeves thought this team had some talent and it was miscoached. If that was the case, and McNair decided to retain CC, why not give him a one year extension? Going into the biggest draft since 2002 with a scared guy making decisions is just insane.

I tried writing this earlier but got locked out of here. Everyone would bond together if they just realized it came back to one guy. The Carr lovers claim that the guy hasn't had a chance because he doesn't have a line and has no talent or coaching around him to make him better. They think we haven't given him anything to work with for 4 years....Casserly. The VY supporters think he would add to our winning attitude and give us a playmaker that the offense is missing, someone that isn't Carr...Casserly. The Bush guys think we need him as the playmaker because the other 3 RBs we drafted aren't franchise backs and that we have wasted enough picks on second tier guys when we could have gotten a Portis and others in other drafts..Casserly. The trade down for O-line faction is tired of having no line and thinks that we are dumb to pass up a good tackle, someone that we never got in FA or in the draft before even though we knew it was a huge problem and Carr was getting knocked around..Casserly. So maybe we should just band together and realize the source of almost ALL of the tension comes from one man's building of 4 years...Casserly.

Actually, Casserly is the only guy who can SAVE this year's Texans draft, if reports I heard are true. Seems like McNair really wants to pick Bush, which would be really suicidal since Casserly has already proved you can find a good RB without burning a #1 overall on him. Casserly will have input on the selection and will hopefully be able to find someone who will offer Houston a good package to trade the pick. Without Casserly, the Texans would probably throw the opportunity of a lifetime away, draft Bush when we already have a good RB and let the OL and bad defense wallow in incompetency.

Um, Casserly picked up Dom Davis with a third, Carr, Andre Johnson, D-Rob and Jerome Mathis with a second-day pick. Not a bad core, if you ask me.

Sorry but he gets no credit for Carr right now and A. Johnson was a given. I'll give you the other 2 even though one is only a special teamer right now. That in no way makes up for ignoring the O-line in 3 drafts, especially in the middle rounds where he took 2 more RBs, two back-up QBs and other players whom don't start for us. He traded away picks for Babin and Buchanan and has a track record of bad picks with two franchises. Sorry 2-3 guys over 4 years is not a success.

One can say until one is blue in the face that Casserly works closely with his coaches and gets who they want. Its as simple as that. Kubiak and his coaches gave Casserly a list and look what has happened in the FA period. His job is to get the players the coaches want and need. He knows what he is doing and does it well. In fact don't be surprised if McNair gives him an extension to his contract plus a raise.

Capers on the other hand gave Casserly a list and look what he did. He gave them the players they wanted and sometimes at a premimum. But that was who the coaching staff wanted. Look where that staff is now. Enough said on this matter.

The tack fan has spoken.

Actually I have it on good authority that Cass speaks the truth when he says "coaches' decision." Supposedly he and his scouts give the coaches all of the information they have and then the coaches make the decision -- in some cases, including some of the very obviously wrong ones we have seen in years past -- including trading up to grab Babin half a round ahead of where anyone else in the league had him projected, Travis Johnson instead of Derrick, and so on.

Not sure where exactly the truth lies, and I used to be on the fire Casserly bandwagon as much as anyone else on this board, but word I'm hearing is that he actually is a credible GM who has just taken the fall for bad decisions made on the part of Capers and Co.

For whatever it's worth.

Has anybody else heard that Casserly will be taking a position with the NFL and leaving the Texans???? I don't have a source to quote just something I heard.

I herd the same thing. Funny, he gets to screw up ALL our drafts picks, then leave for another job! WTF?:brickwall

I have to agree that all the Cass hate is over the top. Casserley is well respected around the league as a GM that makes things happen. Fans of every team look for a scape goat when the team under performs and Cass has been one for our fans. If Kubiak takes the team and turns it around will that change peoples mind about Cass?

I live just outside Dallas, Bill Parcells does same thing CC does. If player is GREAT was my pick, if he stinks Jerry Jones picked him. Ala Good picks CC bad picks coaches

He has a history of blaming other people for his mistakes. He blamed the Heath Shuler pick on Norv Turner in Washington. If I'm the GM and I'm responsible for picking the players, there is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING that my subordinate is going to say or do that will make me waste a #3 overall pick!!!! Of course if that pick or the Bennie Joppru or the Seth Wand pick had worked out, he'd be quick to take credit.

It's a vicious circle. He gets away with it because he's respected for being in the league for so long, but the reason he's been in the league so long is because he gets away with passing the buck. It's the old merit vs. seniority argument. Companies that reward merit succeed and companies that reward seniority stagnate then die.

It's funny. All this hatred toward the GM, and yet none of it is directed at the man who hired him, and hasn't fired him.

Some of you who actually think Casserly is going to have a major role in the upcoming draft, haven't been listening to McNair lately.

When I heard the news a couple of months ago that Casserly was leaving the Texans I was estatic. How did he last this long in the NFL with the Texans? How did you come to think of what the Texans really needed as a team? But, hay, whats done is done. WHy didn't he go to, say, the Colts? He probably would have had them in the losing column ofr a change. But you can't change the past so hopefully Mr. McNair will do the right thing and make Reeves the GM as it's suppose to be. Atleast reeves knows how to build a real champion program. I can't say that I'm happy to see Casserly go but good riddance and good luck. Sorry Vince for the mistakes that any Houston franchise team has always made and being the laughing stock of the NFL. I wish you luck and hope you stick it to the Texans. As for Bush, welcome to Houston and I hope you have a very successfull career here. David Carr, well, hi.

I actually agree with you completely and have found myself questioning at times if McNair may be a brilliant businessman but not so much a business/football man. There is a huge difference. I hope the marriage ends after this draft.

Each GM has some successes and some failures. After all, he did bring in D-Davis, AJ, Carr and others. He's had his failures as well. So, what's the beef?

I didn't hear much screaming during the years they beat Dallas, Pittsburgh and got to 7-9. What, do you think Capers, Casserly and the whole coaching staff suddenly got smacked with a stupid stick last year? :deadhorse

Not to answer for them but me personally..I never liked what Casserly was doing. And to take your argument you could even apply that to the coaching staff. They were allegedly doing it the "right" way and building a winner. Did they get dumb? All I know is that Charlie and others are now saying it was coaches picks. To me that is a cop out. If you are GM your job title includes "personnel" and you make the trades and picks. Either way I hope he gets it right this time.

The coach isn't necessarily the subordinate. I don't know how it was in Washington, but they've made it clear that the head coach doesn't work for Casserly, he works for McNair.

Ok so Cass and crew has made some bad choices.. but he did hit with DD in the 4th round. He turned a 6th round pick into a 3rd with drew henson a few years ago.. so its been up and down..

Ironic isn't it? Without the trade we possibly would not be in position to sign Bush.

What almost everone here has failed to talk about is that while CC has missed on picks in the draft look at the 5 to 10 players right after the misses, they were all misses. There is not one GM that hits on every pick( or most picks for that matter). I looked at the past drafts and the Texans have actually done a pretty decent job when you stack their drafts up with the rest of the league. He definantly made a big mistake on Buchanon but I did not hear very many complaints when the trade was made. And if you remeber correctly, CC said from the very beginning that Capers wanted Babin. The last thing, have some dang patience, it takes 3 years for 90% of young players to develope so quite crying and support our home team or go watch someone else. This entire board is filled with whiney babies.

Rich and Mark just finished talking about him on 610. They say he's out on Moday and Ron Hill's taking his job. Reporting on a story that came out of Philly.

I'll try to find a link for the story.

the link

Texans general manager Charley Casserly is expected to get his walking papers from owner Bob McNair shortly after the draft. Sources say he already has put his Houston home on the market and probably will wind up with a football operations job in the NFL office in New York. The two leading candidates to replace Casserly, sources say, are Falcons vice president of player personnel Ronnie Hill and Broncos director of pro scouting Rick Smith.
-- Philadelphia Daily News

BTW, I thought somebody put the listing for his house on this board a month ago.

From this same link... Poor Young...

Texas quarterback Vince Young was seated with his family at the NFL draft luncheon in Manhattan yesterday, still trying to digest getting rejected by his hometown Texans, when team owner Bob McNair stopped by his table for a chat. McNair said he didn't apologize to Young and his family, but he did tell them he was "sorry." The Texans, he said, already had their quarterback.
-- New York Daily News

What kind of track record does Ron Hill have? I'm not sure I've heard of him other than McClain's ramblings.

the original story from Philly

Texans general manager Charley Casserly won't be around to see how his '06 draft picks pan out. Casserly is expected to get his walking papers from owner Bob McNair shortly after the draft. Sources say he already has put his Houston home on the market and probably will wind up with a football operations job in the NFL office in New York. Former Broncos, Giants and
Falcons coach Dan Reeves was hired by McNair last year as a consultant. He won't replace Casserly, but will have a good deal of influence into choosing his successor. The two leading candidates, sources say, are Falcons vice president of player personnel Ronnie Hill and Broncos director of pro scouting Rick Smith.
