Kubiak and Drafting--Different Thread

I was listening to the talk this morning and an interesting point came up. Excuse me if it was brought up before but I am here off and on. Assuming Kubiak is our coach and brings the Denver, zone blocking philosophy you have to look at how they drafted. None of their RBs were first round guys. Portis and Bell were 2nd rounders. You got your bust in Clarett in the 3rd and TD in the 7th. The rest were mostly FAs. So if he has his imput does that mean he may pass on Bush?Their QBs were mobile with Snake and Elway. Carr can run but so can VY. Does Bush fit like Bell because if he hits the gaps right in the zone scheme he can bust some big ones?Maybe they trade the pick. Just food for thought instead of yelling about the other stuff. I do love what Denver does on the ground.

Myself and others here have mentioned this as well. First, our draft is going to depend on who we hire as a head coach. Next, if it is Kubiak, like you said, Denver doesn't usually use a 1st round pick on RB's or offensive linemen. So there is a possibility that if we do hire Kubiak, we could trade down and maybe even draft defense because he may switch our defense to the 4-3.

That is what I was thinking. I'm not a big fan of trading down but if he had the right scheme and they had targeted some players further down that could have an impact, I could see them listening. Again, sorry it repeated some themes. I just hadn't thought about their old drafts before.

As a matter of fact, someone else mentioned on here, cannot remember who, that Denver usually draft their linemen later in the draft because they draft guys who most teams consider undersized to utilize in the zone blocking scheme. And honestly, at this point, I don't think anything could surprise me on draft day.

How many #1 overall picks has Denver had to pick such a player? If we didn't have the pick, I wouldn't expect us to draft the skill guys early either. Denver has been a fairly good team for years and as such don't get the early picks. Hopefully, if Kubiak comes here, we won't have this pick for anymore years. I would rather us get the 31-32 pick every year in the draft.;)

Didn't someone post an article here which talked about how one of Kubiak's good friends is Jeff Tedford?

Something else to think of is that the O-Coordinator for UT and Kubiak are very good/close friends. Not mentioing this for him to become our O Coordinator but for to give an (biased of course) up front and close/personal opinion on Vince.

Coach elated by Texas' success

The man responsible for Vince Young being at Texas was glowing Thursday.

"I couldn't be more thrilled," Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster said.

He recruited Young out of Houston's Madison High School to the Austin campus when Brewster was an assistant coach at the school. Young was his last recruit for the Longhorns.

Brewster was beside himself after Young led Texas to the national championship Wednesday night with a 41-38 victory over USC.

"I had a great sense of pride watching Vince and so many of the other great kids I had a part in recruiting to that school," Brewster said. "To see them develop into national champions was amazing."

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan also was pulling for the Longhorns. Both of his children graduated from Texas, and his son, Kyle, now an assistant with Tampa Bay, played football there.

"That game was good for all of football," Shanahan said.

We hired their TE coach rather than OC?(sarcasm) What is that? I work with several VY supporters and I don't agree we should take the QB.

Kubiak is close with Mack Brown as well (no suprise)...none of it really matters...

I believe it started with a Jeff Tedford question...who cares who Kubiak is close with? I'm sure he has many connections as do many coaches in the NFL fraternity...

Staying on track here. Well considering their line consists of the one 1st rounder and the rest are 4th round, 7th round and rookie free agent, I can see that. As for the other post that said that they never have a high pick...you are right. Here are their drafts.

This thread started with a question about Kubiak and our draft and couldn't go 10 posts without someone saying the V word...

I know. I wrote it because I am a draft junkie and would have liked to have discussed how Denver ran their drafts and team and how we could equate it to here. If anyone else would like to discuss some of their picks I'm all ears. Last year they did pull a Charlie and go all DB, all the time in the middle rounds, their main picks, with the exception of Clarett. I also noticed that they pretty much stuch with big name programs and didn't try to reach in the first few rounds. I may be wrong but Marshall was the smallest school I saw with Watts.

I thought VY was mentioned in the original 1st post on this thread...did I miss something?

Memo to those who might not have faced reality yet. Regardless of what road the Texans go VY will be in every other thread for years to come. Same goes for Bush if we pass on him/take him for that matter. You may not like it, but you might want to start accepting it before it eats you alive. I'm not crazy about it, but what can you do? It is what it is...

His name was mentioned in the original post, but not part of the question.

Would we even be having a Bush-Young debate if Casserly hadn't passed on RB's Clinton Portis (Pitts), DeShaun Foster (Gaffney), & Brian Westbrook (Hill). That said, Denvers O-Line has been built in late rounds. This is a good thing!

holy good points.....

Yea, Casserly is another "must fire" case........

That guy has made bad decision after bad decision.

It looks like Kubiak could be the man. It appears all has gone quiet since the visit with him. Texans cannot do anything with Gary until aftewr Denver is out of the playoffs.

If Kubiak is the man, a big positive is the tutelage he received from Alex Gibbs the Guru of the zone blocking scheme. Gibbs is now a consultant with the Falcons. As you know the Falcons have the led the league in rushing the last 2 years. Inquiring minds would like to know what if any coaches Kubiak would be bringing with him. Specifically Rick Dennison a Alex Gibbs protogege.

http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=357&contentID=628

Gibss philosophy is to take Oline in the latter rounds of draft. He places more importance on speed, good footwork and lateral movement over size. That is why most Gibbs lineman will not exceed 310 lbs and have quick 20 time (sub 5.20 40)for olinemen. Gibbs feels he can get guys in RDS 5-7 and coach them up to perform the required zone blocking. Gibbs also wants backs who are quick enough to hit the zone. Gibbs controled the running game while he was at Denver and Atlanta and it looks like Kubiak has carried on the Gibbs philosophy.

personally i see the texans dueing the unpopular thing fan-wise but the smart thing football-wise and trading down...QB and RB is not a priority for us...OL, TE, DE, LB, and CB are...i think the best senario is that we trade down and pick up either aj hawk or mario williams whoever is available...it will not be that big of a surprise to me if jonathan scott is available in the second round...so there's your 2nd rounder...basically here's what i see happening:

trade down with the jets for their 1st in 06 and 07 plus their 2nd rounder 06 and their 3rd rounder in 07

1st. AJ Hawk
2nda. Jonathan Scott
2ndb. Leonard Pope
3rda. Darryl Tapp
3rdb. Will Allen
4th. Best CB
5th. BPA
6th. BPA
7th. BPA

hc: "THE KUB" (pronounced kuuuuuuuub/;noun)

dc: gray

oc: saunders

ol coach: dennison

wr coach: kippy

db coach: hoke

special teams: marciano

-----------------------------------------------nice!

and you have your best assistant offensive and defensive coaches under the dc/oc tutelage due to their departure in the near future. gray will be here longer then saunders because the defensie lacks more pieces and will probably be addressed more in the 07' offseason then this year.

let the regime begin!

saunders is back to determine how much intrest he's recieved as an hc from other teams, his compatability with kubiak's offensive philosiphy ,and his desire to come here as an oc.

gray will be interviewed again soon (speculation) for the same reasons.

some small part of me thinks kippy was interviewed not only to determine his desire to remain here and be cohesive with kubiak ,but also to keep gray from feeling like the "rooney token".

That would be a PREMO line up of coaches IMO.

We took Gaff instead of Portis, they were both second rounders in our first season. We didnt take Westbrook because we got DD in the 4th, the round Westbrook was taken in. Right now I would take Portis, but he has always had a good line to run through, unlike DD.

I agree on your points to a point. We took Pitts at 50, Portis was 51. Gaff was pick 33, Foster was 34. Westbook was taken in 2003 at #91. We took Charles Hill at #83. Our next pick was round 4, where we picked the amazing Jonathan Wells at #99, 8 picks after Westbrook. Don't get me started on picking Wells instead of Alex Brown, Randy McMichael & Larry Foote. Also, we picked Joppru over Anquan Boldin, Osi Umenyiora & Mike Doss. It just goes on & on...

There arent many teams in the league that couldnt go back to the drafts and construct an all pro team for themselves.

No team gets all the playmakers. its pointless to act like we are any different.
