Young versus Leinart

I know everyone is already riding on the VY bandwagon by now, but I heard an interesting analysis on a recent mock draft on ESPN just recently. They had

Texans taking Bush
NO taking Leinart
Tennessee taking VY

The reasoning behind this was that Leinart has had 3 amazing years behind center, won the heisman, called his own plays, has perfect technique, etc. Young on the other hand has great heart and some amazing legs, but has only had 1 good year in college ball. His sophomore year he had almost as many INTs as TDs, had a low completion %, and tended to break the pocket too early. True, he had an absoltely perfect year thsi year, but doesn't this remind anyone of the TJ situation? Travis Johnson had a beastly year his senior year, and has so far done nothing in the NFL. Instead of 1 amazing year, I'd rather have 3 great seasons. Consistentcy is what we need in Houston, not potential for fantastic.
 
well i for one agree with that mock draft and i think thats how it will turn out as well but be prepared your gonna get Linched by the Vince Young MOB , here it comes :redtowel:
 
1.vince didnt have a low completion % 2 years ago.
2. vince ran the #1 rushing offense in the nation- he ran for 1000+ yards
3. he was only a sophomore.
4. his qb ratings(NFL and college) as a junior are better than leinarts as a junior.
5. the voters for the heisman blew it, and if there was a revote, vince would get every last one.

I think Leinart will end up being a better QB than Vince Young. I think both will be good QB's, but I have a feeling Leinart will have the better career. I think David Carr will be better than both of them when it's all said (I'm still a Carr fan).

I also agree with Leinart having 3 great years and Young have 1. Leinart was the better college player, in my opinion.

As for Travis Johnson, I think he can still end up into a good defensive player. Maybe the new defensive coordinator (Jerry Gray?) and the new coaches will do wonders for him.
 
Same thing can be said for Carr too however, but the biggest thing that I like is that both Carr and Young progressed each year. Carr progress through this awfull system every year except for this year. I highly doubt Carr has plateaued and I feel a new west coast system will do wonders for him. That being said, I think Young could do the same thing, but don't expect magical numbers in his first year, rookies don't normally have great years at QB. I'm kinda bewildered by Casserly and his lack of thinking out the Carr scenario so fast by saying that they absolutely are picking up his bonus. We have a great deal of scenarios to look at:

  • Pick up Carr's option, trade down a bit and draft one of the good tackles available and use the additional picks to shore up other spots or maybe use our extra 3rd to trade up and get a good player.
  • Pick up Carr's 2 year option, draft Vince Young and let them dook it out in a QB controversy. Just don't let Young turn into Rivers and report late. If Carr wins, we have a very expensive backup. If Carr loses, we have a very expensive backup. Either way trading them would cost us significantly. One possible scenario would be to trade for LAvar Arrington because lord knows he'll be too expensive in Washington and we need a good ILB.
  • Do no pick up Carr's option, draft Young. All the Young lovers are going to like this one. Young is brought in fresh with a new system, new coaches, etc... (hey sound familiar?) and gets to start from scratch. Of course you could bring in a player like Brien Griese (who may be released because of his high salary) to whom of which he already knows the system Kubiak runs and can tutor and guide Young like nobodies business.
  • Trade down, don't pick up Carr's option, sign a veteran free agent QB or let Banks handle the job (there were some on here that actually wanted to see what he has) and draft Ngata, Dbrick, DeAngelo Williams or any other lower top 10 pick and use extra picks to bargain with or actaully God forbit Casserly does his homework and picks solid guys in the later rounds.
 
Well thought out and you pose a good question based upon a body of work that is hard to argue with. However, it has been my fan and professional experience to know that there is not much difference between the top three prospects, but there is much difference between how those three players will effect the team that drafted them and how their eventual careers play out.

You can easily make a case for all three of them to be the #1 pick. The #1 pick resides with the Texans and the two obvious picks are Bush, since we have a QB, or VY, because of the potential, local boy and the body of work that he has put together at UT that culminated in a National Championship.

Myself, I am a trade down kind of guy. :)

Leinart's first season to take snaps was his junior year. Vince's was his sophomore year. Here's the stat comparison:

Young : 148/250 1,849yds 59.2% 12TD / 11INT 130.64 Rating
Leinart : 255/402 3,556yds 63.4% 38TD / 9INT 164.64 Rating

Young's final rating for his junior year is 163.95, which is actually a tad lower than Leinart's rating his junior year.

what? Leinart started as a sophomore; hence the 34 game win streak, and his 34-2 record.

Ok, you're right on that .... he redshirted twice. I was confused on the "5th year senior" stuff. Nonetheless, Leinart put up 3 monster seasons at USC while Young has 1 at Texas.

Well, apparently that didn't hurt his game any. He can still put some umph in his passes. His TD pass to Jarrett in the Rose Bowl was a good example of how hard and accurate he can still throw.

I think I'm going to exit this discussion quickly ... I have a bad feeling about it going downhill pretty fast ... lol.
