Why Texans Will Select Young

htxfan

Practice Squad
During the press conference following the dismissal of Dom Capers, owner Bob McNair made only one critical comment attributable to a specific member of the Texans organization: that management could have and should have demanded more out of David Carr.

I can't imagine the same has ever been said, nor ever will be, of Vince Young. Young sets his own high standards, and doesn't need a cadre of coaches prodding him to try harder and be a better athlete. Young pushes himself, and his teammates, to be the best.

You won't find him flailing his arms after a receiver drops a pass, nor smiling on the sideline when the team is on the losing side of the scoreboard. Aside from his raw talent, he brings intangibles that cannot be measured by stats. Vince Young is special, and his leadership can bring this franchise and city what it's been longing for since the day professional football first arrived in Houston.

Over the coming weeks and months, the team's management, coaching staff, and scouts will come to the same conclusion, and Vince Young will be selected with the top pick.

I swear if I see more of these types of post....fawning over Vick, er, Young's leadership...his work ethic...god, you'd think that Vick, er, Young owns those traits to himself.

You know on his way to meet his agent this morning Vince cured cancer and figured out how to breed burnt orange kittens that smell like gingerbread and fart sparkles.

Seriously!

Forgive me, but I am not sure who made a post earlier...Someone said that we should at least wait on our pick until after the combine...I agree with this comment...VY is an amazing talent but he was in a collage offense. Seems to me that collage is a lot different then the pros...I want to see him under center...Basing your pick on one game is foolish, which is what I think most folks are doing (especally that fat moron on 610: Rich "where did Charlie go" Lord). Lets get our HC first, then a OC, then we can worry bout drafting...Of course, I still think that Bush is better suited for the NFL, but thats just my OP...

Its no more annoying than seeing Vick and Vince in the same sentence, saying that Bush is the savior, or that Carr is the savior...oh wait, we haven't seen that one yet...

That a mediocre four year performance by Carr has engendered such blind loyalty is surprising.

That such loyalty should also spawn a legion of Young-Haters is pathetic.

No offense, but how do you KNOW. idonno: I mean, you think you know, but nobody knows until after the fact.

I mean, Young has potential, no doubt about it. But he's never played a down of NFL football. And he's definitely never played on a perpetual losing machine like the 2002-2005 Texans.

While I admire your certainty, I'm reserving judgment on his Hall of Fame induction until I see him in action against real NFL players.

I'm not sure how much of it is loyalty. It's more of a reality check that even our greatest talents look mediocre when playing on a bad TEAM.

Anyone that hates Young (or Bush for that matter) is thinking with emotions over logic. These dudes are just players in a game.

Isn't funny that nobody is really questioning Bush's worth as if everyone caught all the west coast games these last couple of years? Yet UT is on TV all the time here locally and you wouldn't know it by some of the remarks.

I think Both VY and Bush will be superstars, but its just an observation that I find interesting...

What is "suprising and pathetic" is that you think one player is the reason for a teams success and failure. It is obvious by your qoute "Vince Young is the answer to all our questions". Of course you think Carr is the cause of all the problems. If only it were that simple.

For some it will take Carr realizing his potential with a another to team to understand that his performance has been a result of the team/philosophy/lack of resources. A new coach (Kubiak) will hopefully upgrade these areas and give Carr a chance to shine. That is if management doesn't listen to the short-sighted fans like you. Luckily they usually don't.

1. Vince was playing a college defense huh? (Insightful)

1a. Reggie was playing a college defense as well. (Think about it for at least 5 seconds before you write.)

2. Basing your pick on one game is foolish huh? ( Your intellect is beginning to astound me. )

2a. Did Vince win the Rose Bowl last year? (How about Ohio State, Kansas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and how about a 30-2 record as a starter.)

You can apologize to every Texans fan that Wants Vince at your leisure

I dont like the whole idea of drafting a quarterback just because he can run better than the others. How many "scrambling" quarterbacks have won Super Bowls lately? Tom Brady is slow as molasses in January and he's won 3. Brad Johnson has won 1. Kurt Warner won 1. Trent Dilfer won 1. All these guys can not run. But they have won Super Bowls. Vick has 0 Super Bowls. McNabb has 0 SuperBowls. Cunningham had 0 Super Bowls. Scrambling is not a necessary quality in a quarterback.

I dunno man, at some point you just get fed up with hearing a name over and over again and you get tired of reading the same glowing (but mostly ignorant) post about how a guy is going to change everything about the game and make everyone who's come before irrelevent and you get so sick of it that I can see someone reaching the point where they get close to hating that person.

Maybe not hating them personally but hating the constant banging of the drum for that player. I know I'm there with Young. It's been almost a week of nothing but "VINCE YOUNG IS GOD" and it's gotten terribly old. The sheer number of new posters who've never been seen in here before but now can't stop posting about Vince has me sick of his name and his face. I just want him to go away at this point because maybe that will mean that all of these Vince Young jock-humping trolls will hit the road too.

freaking right on man--i couldn't agree more. i say bush or d'brick. if anybody wants to jump ship to whatever team vincent young goes to, that's fine. i'd rather see empty seats at reliant that any of them.

Some people are just as sick and tired of hearing about how great Reggie Bush is, or that all Carr needs is better protection to get winning results

If you want to see Vince drafted #1 you better hope we trade down with the Titans or Saints, although I don't see them bothering to do that since they know Vince will be available at #2 anyways since the Texans are not going to pick him. Apparently you also missed the part the other day where they said they are going to resign Carr to his three year extension and that they will not draft a QB in the 1st round with Carr here.

Nobody in the Texans organization has said anything on the record about Vince Young in the wake of the announcement that he is entering the draft. Stay tuned.

Bob Allen in the question referred to Vince Young and Charley Casserly said that they are not going to take a quarterback in the draft.

Bob McNair said that they are going to draft someone #1 who is going to have an immediate impact on the field.

They got as close as they could to saying that they would draft Reggie.

They're football people and better judges of NFL talent than I am. Even though his name was mentioned, I would just be cautious about making assumptions based on statements made before he officially declared.

They were specifically asked about Vince last night, and they said they would not draft a QB in the 1st round with Carr on the team. They had said before that they were going to resign Carr and look for playmakers to put around him on offense, that would not include a 1st round pick on a QB.

McNair's statement about immediate impact should be the most telling. If they were considering Young he could have easily said the best player available, but he included the word immediate which pretty much eliminates Vince Young.

McNair was also distancing himself from Vince when he was asked about the Rose Bowl. Bob Allen said something about how there was a pretty special player in that game, Vince Young. And I believe McNair said something like "well there were four pretty special players in that game".

I agree with all of that. However, while McNair speaks of immediate impact, Casserly was discussing how the new coach will be using next season to "evaluate" the team. Obviously it's McNair's call in the end, but I don't get the feeling that there's been any final consensus reached. I sense that no firm decisions will be reached on this until the new coaching staff is in place and the team has had a chance to evaluate all the declared underclassmen at the combine, etc.

then could you explain why they are having coaching candidates break down game film of reggie bush?

They're doing their homework, and in the end, they may pick him. Before Young declared, he was the clear choice. Do you really believe that the Texans won't look at Young's game film now that he's declared?

Count Gary Walker as another hoping he's the number one pick.

"If he comes out, he should be the No. 1 pick in the draft. What an athlete. Bush is a great player, too, but I don't think he's better than Vince Young."

I'm sooooo sick and tired of this reasoning.......... HOw many freak'n Quarterbacks from Fresno state ever win the SuperBowl?? How many QBs go from- sacked most in the NFL- to -won a Superbowl??

How many Pocket passers in the last 35 years did not win the SuperBowl??

Trent Dilfer won a SuperBowl, should we can Carr, and call Trent out of REtirement??

John Elway and Steve Young scramble and won Super Bowls. Randall Cunningham has the highest win percentage in NFL history. Donovan Mcnabb wins a lot more than he loses and Michael Vick who can't pass wins more than he loses.

But Reggie Bush isn't declaring until tomorrow.

Do you actually think that they haven't scouted Vince Young at all?

You just answered your own question. Trent Dilfer is a QB from Fresno State that won a Super Bowl.

I really don't think the Texans have scouted him. I don't think most people in the NFL, or in Austin, expected Young to leave early. The expectations seemed to be just the opposite for Bush.

The Texans front office has already stated their intentions to resign Carr, and they have done so unequivocally. There was no indecision evident in their words, their faces, their voices. This is not an office that is saying, well, we'll go ahead and resign Carr, cause we don't see anything better to do. This is not an office that, since Young has declared, has said anything in the least that infers they are now reevaluating their previous statement.

I'm only saying that Young has much more upside than Carr and a much higher likelihood of being a dominating influence on the success of the team long term than Bush. Ergo, we should (a) trade Carr, (b) draft VY.

I think VERY highly of Bush, but he's a situation player, he's a luxury we can't afford at the moment. I don't think he can "turn the team around." I do think VY can (in 2 years).

The scrambling QB is not the question. People want Vince Young because he's a bigger than life winner and he gives every indication of doing the same in the NFL. He can pass, he can run, he can apparently read a defense, he takes his team to victory. All stuff (a) Carr doesn't or can't do, and (b) Bush won't be able to do because he'll be a smaller part of the offense.

People want to draft VY because he'll do what he does exceptionally well, and what that is is run the offense.

The Albatross Casserly actually said "If we have David Carr around here" we're not going to take a QB. Something more on that line.

In any case, what does it matter what he says, he can turn around and change his mind (or have it changed for him) at any moment.

Herman Edwards.

odds on if the Texans draft and start Vince that he doesn't finish the dallas game?

Vince will be hit in the NFL and the players there hit a bit harder than the big 12 which was way down this year.

Vick has yet to play a full season in the NFL, VY will be no different, good when he's healthy but constantly dinged. He won't be running a friendly spread offense in the NFL and you will see a QB confused and throwing a ton of picks like he did last year.

Vince will most likely be a good NFL QB but to think he can run around the way he did on USC is almost laughable. I mean did Texas play a stout D all year? In the NFL he will get absolutely crushed when he runs at some point. That will lead to hesitation and a desire to be a pocket passer where you have to watch him flick it from where a 5'10 QB would. I wish the best to him but I think his hype has surpassed Bush's which is mind boggling in itself. Good thing for the Texans they'll never be in a position to sell so high so hopefully they can make the best of it.

Tell you what, who wants to put their money where their mouth is?

Fifty dollars says we don't draft Vince. Any takers?

Another fifty dollars says whatever team Vince goes to will finish under .500 this season.

This is the NFL, and as far as the top 2 or 3 go, very rarely will teams "smokescreen" their choices. What does it benefit us to smokescreen anyone? We have the number one pick, we choose whoever the hell we want to. Likewise, it is a fairly safe bet that NO and Tennessee are looking at quarterbacks, so there is no trading the pick and hoping they will pass on VY because we downplayed his importance to us.

We are not drafting Young. Sorry to be the one to tell you, but until Cass comes over to my place for dinner and tells me so, we ain't doing it.

Better yet, why don't we bet something else.

We take Vince - you stay away from the msg boards until 1/1/07
We don't take vince - I stay away from msg boards until 1/1/07 and I'll pay you the $50 :challenge

The start time to stay away is effective as soon as the pick is picked

Matt Leinart was 34-1 as a starter and won two national championships and a Heisman, so if the "Vince is an unbelievable winner" argument is supposed to be valid, then Leinart looks like a better choice. Or we could trade for David Greene who is the career leader for NCAA in wins and won something like 47 games while he was at Georgia. Vince can run pretty well, he can pass decently, and he can read college cover 2 zones that teams throw at him, Carr can run too (maybe not quite as fast as Vince but still good at it, 2nd in NFL in rushing by QBs), Carr has a much stronger arm and is just as accurate, and Carr has been given a lemon of a team in terms of talent and coaching, yet he sacrifices his body every chance he gets in order to make a play. When Carr was in charge of the offense and calling the plays, they put up 24 first half points, then Pendry took over and we got another 3.
