Will We Really Be Taking A Step Back???

The Dream

All Pro
I've read so many post and have heard so many callers on the radio saying that if we take VY first we will be taking a step back. My question to those who say that is, how much further back can we go???...if you look up the word "back" in the dictionary a picture of the Texans logo would be right next to it.....I mean seriously we were 2-14 last year, our offense wasn't that good neither was our defense, add to that fact that we're getting a new coaching staff and some new players, that means WE ARE STARTING OVER (whether we get Vince or not).........Face it guys we stink and this team can't do much worst, we can only get better.....this isn't just another thread jocking VY, I'm just trying to say that we are rebuilding, we are starting over, so why not take the best player available?

Yes we will be taking a step back because this team is much better than it's record, but if we start over with a new quarterback then we actually will be as bad as our record.

People have posted this same thought elsewhere, so I think at least some people are in agreeance with you. We have the first draft pick for a reason. We have a fourth-year QB who is still in development, a Running Back who can't stay on the field, and two defunct lines. So from this standpoint, would drafting a new QB be a particular hindrance to the Texans? Probably not, except that the franchise may consider themselves in a rebuilding phase and accept a four- or five-win season.

It will not be a step back, we took more than a step back this past season. It will be a huge step forward in the long run. The first year we should not expect miracles, but should not be as bad as last year. In the long run he should be the best qb in the nfl, if the coaches do not try to change him too much. I say keep both carr and young on the roster the first year. Carr may throw a little fit , but he had his time with no challenge from anyone. It's time for some competition. You have it at every position on this team except the qb.

If we did not take one draft pick we would improve over last year's record. I don't think that's the debate. The debate is what decision will yield the biggest return for us...we will improve regardless which gets overlooked. Improvement is important, but rings should be the goal...

Exactlly...That is why we should take Reggie first...I think a lot of folks are looking at the title game and over reacting...Most of the posts prior to the game was for bush not young...They taught me in collage to always go with your first impression not your last...

Huh?

Since when is 2-14 actually playoff contenders that are just masking themselves as a below average team?

C'mon, you can't be serious.

Did I say that we were playoff contenders?

But yes, I do believe that we are much better than our record. We could have been 6-10 or 7-9 solely on the ability to make field goals and stop bad QBs in the waning moments of the game.

VY supporters, please list for me VY's stats, intangibles, and mannerisms that make him you all's top prospect. Nothing emotional would be great.

First of all, he NEVER gets rattled. He has the most poise and confidence that I've seen. He plays best in big situations. The entire team points to him as their undisputed leader. He keeps the rest of the team relaxed....and he was 30-2 as a starter. The best thing that you can say about him is that he has the refuse to lose attitue...and his team has that confidence in him as well. His stats speak for themselves (look how well this "running" quarterback did passing the ball).

2005 Stats:
(Passing) 3,036 yards w/ 26 TD and 10 Int. w/ a 65.2 comp. % and a qb rating of 163.95.
(Rushing) 1,050 yards w/ 12 TD's and 0 fumbles.

You have to look at all of the intangibles. Do you realize the kind of money VY will be getting if we select him #1? David Carr money. Eli Manning Money. If you think that Young solves all the problems on this team then have at it, but I seriously don't think Young will help out at CB, Safety, LB, DT, OL,TE or WR. Do you even know that we havn't ever draft a solid ILB, OL, TE? Young may be the second coming of Vick, but really, he's not going to patch this team and have a defense like he did at UT.

Do you realize the kind of money VY will be getting if we select him #1? David Carr money.

But you're alright with paying David "below average, someone get me a comb my hair's not straight" Carr that same kind of money.

Drafting Young #1 Would NOT be a step BACK .... It just Would NOT be a step forward .... at least for 2 years . Young isnt gonna come here and start right away (Probably woudnt start for the Aints next season)...the choice of Young #1 doesnt pay immediate dividends .

As it is this team has too many holes to fill in one offseason as it is . The Texans are building for 2007 and beyond .

As for my pick ... im still stuck where I was a month ago ....just with the addition of Young to the equasion ..... Young , Bush , Trade ...... I just cant come to a conclusion .... Maybe one of them will wow us at the combine's or individual work outs and make the decision easier ...Maybe neither of them show particularly well and make the trade more inviting .

Who knows , its a long time till the draft . :ok:

For starter, there is no step back. We had the worst record in the league so there is no back here.

Second, you are your record. Worst is Worst. 2-14 is 2-14. That is our talent level.

Until the team realizes what it is, a last place team, it will not be able to take a step forward.

for One, not two. The QB position in the NFL is a whole different ball game for rookies. We start a rookie and you are looking at more time to right this ship. We went from 7-9 to 2-14, we didn't go from 3-13 to 2-14. This team was a couple players away from challenging a playoff spot, but it was yanked out from under us last year with the loss of 2 ILB's, 2 CB's, and a safety and were replaced by subpar veterans and loss of day one draft picks, not to mention our 1st pick was a backup, not a starter. We upgraded nothing, if anything we downgraded. You draft Young you draft another backup, that's 2 years in a row Carr has recieved no weapons. Thanks Casserly.

Ten to fifteen years ago I would have agreed with you 100% on the records showing talent level, but in these times you can be down one season and good the next. I think the NFC has five new teams in the playoffs this year. There is a lot more gray nowadays, and IMO, the Texans are a team that has the potential to flip to a winning season.

I don't get it? We keep talking about needing change and if we make any moves or risks now is the time to do it!

Goodness we were 2-14!! We are the worst team in the league.
Our franchise QB just did not get the job done - preiod. The last 2 years he has really flourished to nothing franchise worthy.

He's not a bad QB but package him up while you can and get something good for him ( draft picks for a O-line we desperately need) and cut your losses and don't pay this guy any more $$ for below average play.

We are in an awesome position (kinda) talent wise to get a Superb player in the draft. We have a good problem but we can shoot ourselves in the foot once again if we don't make better desicisions. We're rebuilding , let's start with a good foundation. Draft Young!

We know we won't be in the playoffs soon but at least we have a good future ahead of us and hopefully won't win the most sacked QB in the league with Vince in the pocket..:respect:

Sure, just as soon as you recap Charley Casserly's career highlights. Maybe we can recap Carr's stats, intangibles, and mannerisms while we are at it. For all we know he could be damaged goods. Why does it always come back to this?...figure it out for yourself! I'm not going to waste time explaining somebody's makeup man.

I really don't know why Montana and MJ have no pulse. If I was a Bush basher I would say they both had to lose hard and a lot before they ever became great in the pros. If you never fall how do you know how to get back up? I am saying that...No! That could be more a case for Carr. Bush is a freak, VY is a freak, but our GM MIGHT be making decisions based on ego. Can we prove it?...not really. I can only go on the last 4 years and that does not convince me he's not.

If CC truly is making decisions based on ego then watch out! We all better get used to underachieving because I can't think of one time an ego has benifited any team in the long run. Just ask Jerry Jones, Kobe, Terrel Owens, and the like.

This is going nowhere fast...

Did David Carr miss field goals against SF and TN?

Did David Carr give up 10 points in 30 seconds against STL?

Did David Carr give up a 40 yard play against BAL in the final seconds of the game to set up a game winning field goal?

Did David Carr drop a touchdown pass that hit him right in the hands against JAX at the end of the game?

Did David Carr drop a touchdown pass that hit him in the hands late in the fourth quarter against BAL?

Did David Carr give up 21 points in the fourth quarter against JAX?

He may be far from perfect. But he is not the major reason why we are losing games.

This team is the joke of the NFL. Young changes that immediately. Bush does not. Young is the pick. He is the ONLY pick. McNair knows this already.

Yes we will be taking a step back because this team is much better than it's record, but if we start over with a new quarterback then we actually will be as bad as our record.

This is something that I see quite a bit around here, people who are afraid to make any kind of change. Even when it was apparent that this team was regresssing under Capers, there was this terrible fear of getting rid of him. They believed that it could not get any better and things just would get worse. Casserly shoud have been booted as well, but there was fear that making a change would automatically doom the franchise. Finally, we have the people afraid to let Carr go as well. It is better to them to continue on the path with him regardless of the results of the last four years.

The bottom line is that the Texans were built on the poor foundation of Capers & Casserly & Carr. They really are as bad as their record and rebuilding is really the only worth while option. Denying these facts and hoping that Casserly and Carr are suddenly going to change into something better is much more risky than trying something new and different.

^^^ my new best friend.

This young man(VY) is a difference-maker/playmaker that we haven't seen in years..........I don't see them taking a step back, if anything a step forward. I hope they don't blow this one .

I still can not fathom how CCasserly is still employed by the Texans....................tells me Mr McNair is not all that.
