Texas QB Vince Young to enter NFL draft

By JOSEPH DUARTE
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle
Texas junior quarterback Vince Young plans to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college, a close family friend said today.

Young plans to make the announcement this afternoon at a press conference in Austin.

"He has the blessing of God, the pastor and his family," said Yolanda Lezine, Young's godmother and the family media's spokeswoman. "It's his decision. Everybody is going to support him a 110 percent."

Vince Young is Mack Brown's best early departer since Kwame Cavil!

Just kidding.

Vince has made the right decision. Even Mack Brown can't disagree.

Still - I will be sad seeing him in that Titans jersey.

Thanks for the info.

Speaking of...this was done by someone over on the Titans' forum.

You guys are still getting the better player, IMO.

If he decides to come than good for him and I wish him the very best. I'm still not sure whether or not he should be a Houston Texans though...I've been a fan of his since his days at Madison and I've been to a couple of his games but I'm still not convinced that he can be a good passing QB in the NFL. But VY has those intangible qualities that makes an athlete great and he plays his best under pressure. And those are things this team can use and with the right coaching staff I think VY can become a very good passer. As per that report that the Texans will choose Bush even if VY is available is not true. John McClain said in today's Chronicle that it is premature to even decide who we're taking when we don't even have a head coach! Yeah there is a chance we might pass on him but it's not a done deal or anything like that. There is still a long time to go and someone's stock can rise and fall dramatically within the next month or so. Anyway, goodluck to Vince Young and hope he has a successful NFL career.

How come this thread is not flooded yet?! I guess most people are sleeping in late and they'll wake up to a very nice surprise..hehe.

Why hasn't Reggie declared yet? I thought he would be the first to declare after the Rose Bowl.

No surprise.

I think the Titans will end up with Bush in the end.

Didnt they just sign Henry this offseason and they also have Chris Brown? Not that it means much, since we're all argueing over Bush, DD, Wells, and Morency.

I read on another message board that a local station (not sure if here or Austin - it's Channel 13 somewhere) advertised a Vince press conference around 3:00 pm.

I'm going to puke, that picture already made my stomach turn. There is no way I can watch that for the next decade.

I gather from Titanic fans that they aren't all that happy with either one.

If I were the NO owner, I would swipe up Young before the Titans did. He would get all of the UT fans, plus it would be more ammo for the move to San Antonio. We all talk about how Vince would put butts in the seat. Imagine what it would do for the Saints.

He will be a Titan. Thats why he is coming out. The Texans will draft Bush like they have said all along and the Titans will take Young at 3. Young will be able to be mentored by his "big brother" as he calls Steve McNair. We as Texan fans better get used to seeing that picture above.

#1. San Antonio will not get a team before LA.
#2. People may want to watch VY play on TV but they aren't going to drive to New Orleans to see just him play. Sure they would drive to see UT play there but not one player. (Maybe for a game or two but that is it.)

Yeah San Antonio is not going to get a team. If the team fails in New Orleans, then they will be moved to LA. Which could be better for Vince because he owns LA when he plays there.

I forsee a riot at Reliant ... Hence, my avatar. Just trade back and tell everyone to shut their cake-holes.

They are covering young on ESPN News right now:

Ivan Maisel:

How can anybody turn it down when suddenly you have moved to the top part of the draft.

Who's it going to be for Houston?

Interesting dilemma for Houston. Box office smash to bring the hometown boy in. So much invested in Carr, but the allure of Young may be too great.

Mack Brown?

Mack Brown has been ridiculously successful at giving good reasons pro and con. And players almost always stay with him. He never tries to convince players to stay though. He and Greg Davis went in length talking about VY about what Vince could improve at next year.

If his performance weren't as good, and Texas had lost, what then.

Chances of him going pro would have been slimmer. VY said repeatedly that he was staying. If you make cold hearted business decision, this is the decision you make.

Mel Kiper:

Face of the draft hasn't changed much because we've expected Vince to come out all week. He won't go worse than #3.

He thinks the Texans are making the right decision by taking Reggie and sticking with David Carr. He has Leinart slightly ahead of Vince Young. The Saints have a decision to make. Great fit for Titans at #3.

Leinart is ahead because he's the prototype and he has 3 years of solid play. Young had improved greatly. TD/INT ratio had improved greatly. Has made strides in passing. Unorthodox delivery, but that's not going to bother too many people.

Mike Martz wants a Matt Lineart type, and he may end up at the Saints.

He moved up on the board because of the national station. It's not about one day, but the national exposure can move someone up the board. This happens with the Senior Bowl too....and the combine. The board is fluid. His poise, calmness, instinctiveness, decision-making is instantaneous - all displayed during the Rose Bowl. Great games against Michigan and other games where he's come back.

good recap. I actually think that Leinart could do well with the Saints especially if Martz is the coach eventhough I can't stand Martz. Saints have some weapons and Martz is good with QB's.

I can't even front, he looks damn good in that Titans uni.

But the Saints don't need him, he's not ready to step in and play like Lienart is

Saints 4 Leinart in '06!

The Texans can prevent this from happening.

Swap our 1 for their 1
Of course the Titans have to throw in Fisher as part of the deal.

I heard that VY will get around $50M - $60M for declaring in endorsements, salary, etc... Almost impossible to turn down.

Question? Would you build a franchise around a QB or RB??? I'd take QB anyday. Is Carr the answer? We already know that answer. He doesn't know how to win. I'd take any available QB if I was the Texans and opt out Carr. You can't go wrong picking a local product even if he becomes a bust (which VY won't) he has too much regional fan support. Quality RB's can be had very cheap in the NFL.

If he is a bust then you can go wrong because you won't win games. You will get just as much regional support if you put a winning team on the field than you would with Vince Young as your quarterback.

Fox 7 (KTBC) in Austin will carry the news conference live in Austin at 3 pm, where VY will make his announcement/decision. I am still holding hope the speculation is wrong and he returns for his senior year, and a chance for a repeat. Either way, he is a fantastic athelete and great person, I am sure his decision is right for him.

Congrats to VY, You're the Man!

VY is Michael Vick with better poise, decision making, passing. He electrifies the crowd wherever he goes. I mention Vick because Atlanta (which is not a loyal, crazy fan base city) has rallied around Vick and that sports franchise has been totally renewed as a result.

In HS, the whole city of Houston was behind him as Madison made a run. I saw him do things in HS that were incredible and translated that to the college level. His work ethic is impeccable and will only get better at the pro level. He is a natural born winner/leader. That can't be taught its inbred. Very rarely do you find a QB with a can't lose persona. He is a rare athlete.

Except he doesn't have Vick's speed or arm strength. Two factors that are extremely important in the NFL for a running quarterback.

Have you seen him play??? He has deceptive speed and his arm is incredible. I've seen him throw 65 yards on the run. The people who question his arm have not even seen him throw the ball.

SPEED... Have you ever seen him caught from behind? How many tackles does he break? D lineman can't bring him down one on one.

I have a HS clip where he threw a pass to a WR (about 25 yds) on the run. the WR ran for about a 80 yd TD. What was incredible was that near the end of the run VY was running next to him into the endzone ready to make a block. how fast are you to throw a pass downfield and then outrun everyone to get in the endzone with the WR... one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. I had to rewind over and over again to make sure it was really him in the endzone.

Also in the Rose bowl, he pitched the ball outside and was fast enough to actually make a block on the outside. That was incredible. I've never seen Vick do that...

Well that is great but numbers don't lie. Vick ran a 4.28 40 and Young has run a 4.4 40. He may be able to throw the ball 60 yards on the run, but the arc is much higher and the velocity is much lower than Vick's ball.

It's called touch... a lot of QBs don't have it.

In the NFL, too much arc is called an interception.

To clarify, from initial observations I think VY will be a very good to elite NFL QB.
