Vince Young reading defenses.

I just watched the replay of the Rose Bowl and I have to say that those of you who say this kid doesn't read defenses, you are absolutely wrong. Many of his throws came after he looked to one side of the field or even both. You will see that the majority of the balls thrown to Dave Thomas were after he looked to his right and then came back and threw down to Dave Thomas.

Also it is safe to say that Vince Young was looking to pass first before running the ball. There were a couple of plays that were drawn specifically for him.

If I were scouting I would have to say that his height is an attribute. Even when teams try to tackle him at his legs he is capable of leaning forward and picking up four yards.

Yeah, but did you notice that he also is a shotgun QB? Everytime he took a snap, it was in shotfun formation, i read a article on his inexperience at doing a 3 step or 7 step drop which is essentual in the NFL. You wanna bring this guy in and start him when he does not even have this down yet?

I think he is a great QB, but i don't see him doing any better then Carr in the NFL unless the guy has a great OL like in college. Simply put, Carr has not even had this luxery and has alot stronger arm the Vince. Be nice if he would just stay in collage so we could just forget about this debate.

Young can read defenses pretty well...anybody playing at his level can to varying degrees. The issue that I see is that he has a superior offensive line in college that gives him a looong time to read the defense or check his receivers, that is where he will struggle the most at on the pro level, adjusting to the speed and don't forget the added complexity of pro defenses.

Like I said, Young will probably turn out pretty good in the long run...I just think Carr gives us the best chance for the next 2-3yrs.

I don't think that he was in shotgun because he was incapable of taking a snap from under center. The thing is, everytime he was in shotgun it gave him more time to scan the field and it made it easier to take off with it when he had an opening. He didn't run because he was panicking, he ran because he had a clear shot at an easy 10 yards (or more).

That is why you sit him down the 1st yr. Ryan Leaf had a stronger arm than VY too.

I have to disagree on Carr as QB. He chokes under pressure. 1 IE: against Jets at home 2 yrs ago. 4th down on Jets 30 less than a minute I think . He had Johnson on a drag across the middle wide open possible TD and instead threw it in double covarge to TE(Miller) for a INT! Ball Game:thumbdown He just doesn`t have it in pressure situations. If you can`t handle pressure in the regular season. You are in a world of hurt in the Playoffs! Bum Phillps once said "if a dog doesn`t bite as a puppy he never will" All I know is before VY showed up at UT. UT couldn`t win the so called big 1 under Mack Brown.

Couple of points:

1. He wasn't in the shotgun every snap. Just the majority of them because it's durn near required to run the zone-read option. He has a ton more experience playing under center than Byron Leftwich had coming out of college.

2. The shotgun formation does not give you more time to scan the defense. When you're under center, you're able to make your first read at the snap of the ball as you take your first step back. When you're in the shotgun, your first read is catching the ball as it's coming at you...then you make your first defensive read. Hot route passes are almost impossible because you know where you need to go with the ball but you can't because you still have to wait to get the ball before you can pass it. Troy Aikman never ran the shotgun because of this.

Does any one remember what type of offense UT had when Simms was the QB? Was it a similar zone-read or did he take the majority of his snaps from under center?

i think you are thinking about the play where it hit off johnsons shoulder pad and was an incomplete. johnsons rookie year where he ran a bad route - he took responsibility for that play after the game as well if im not mistaken

Also if you remember David Carr was a shotgun Qb at Fresno St. Young has played under center before with Texas. Mack brown changed the offense to fit his QB. He sent his offensive staff to Indy to learn their offense. The same one that Payton Manning is running. I like the spead offense. Put point up on the board which we have been missing every year. He is also being taught everything he needs to know from Steve McNair. But I feel we need to sit him for most of his first year and bring him along slowely. Dont rush him into the same situation that Carr was put into. Let Carr get his head beat in for another year. LOL.

That's an excellent point. When VY first got there, they tried to shove down their offense down his throat. Then Brown got smart, and like he said, he left VY alone, so you know VY has at least some aspects of taking the ball from under center...

Well, VY also had all day and all night to read the defense except for a few plays that USC's pass rush actually broke through Texas' O-line. He won't get that much time in the NFL, and much less on the Texans.

Like I have said before, the Texas O-line was very good last year but another reason it was so great is because defenders were very cautious when rushing him. They didnt bring that many in the first place and then secondly they had to make a concious effort to stay in their lanes because if they got out of their assigned lanes, VY would gash them with his feet...
