Houston We Have A Problem

If Vince Young declares his intentions to enter the 2006 as positive then how many of you guys think that Casserly will do the right thing? This is really going to bother me for the next several months & possibly into the future plans of the Texans as well if he continues to say that David Carr is our QB. Of course he does because he is on the clock (since he drafted him #1 overall in 2002) to say anything else would be to admit he made a mistake- not gonna happen.

If this happens this will dwarf last years Derrick Johnson talk, if the Texans don't get this right and take Vince Young (if available) how many fans are going to style loyal to this franchise? I hope that McNair realizes this fact & has the foresight to nip this in the bud and release both Carr & Casserly :pigfly:

I think Vince is awesome but I really believe this will be a non-issue come draft time because I think he's going to stay in school and win that Heisman next year.

the only reason he was not coming out is that his advisors mis-informed him that he would not be a top 5 pick. clearly now he is not only a top 5 pick but the #1 overall prospect should he come out :)

I agree that it is still early and we have not received a yes or no from VY. Having said that, (watching VY win against the 3rd greatest college football team of all time, according to espn poll, was awesome) there is no way they pass on best talent available and do not draft young-

this also concerns me with Casserly still running operations, one of the questions he will surely ask potential head coaching candidates is "how do you feel about coaching David Carr?" "is there a QB in College that you would want to develop more?"

if they answear "I believe that I can help Carr perform better and become a complete NFL QB" rather than "give me Vince Young and we'll (the Texans) be in the playoffs in two years". Casserly is going to think the Texans can be in the playoffs in two years with Carr not Young. so not only do we lose Vince Young we lose the best coaching candidate at the same time :brickwall

It could be interesting. After watching Bush in a few games, I have been voting to take Bush and not trade the pick.

BUT - after this game - I don't know if Bush is the pick.

Lienert didn't do any damage to his rep.
Bush was solid, but it looked like Carroll was afraid to send him up the middle.
Vince became superman.

So, if we traded with Tennessee - for a 2nd and 3rd this year(or a 2nd and 4th and a 2nd next year) - we could still end up with Bush!

#1 Tenn - Vince - Take their heir to McNair
#2 NO - Leinert - They have a RB and NEED a qb so they will pass on Bush.
#3 Hou - Bush

BUT -even if someone threw a curveball and either Leinert or Young dropped - then we just deal down again.
#3 for
#4 and a 3rd and 4th
or
#9 and RoyWilliams
or
. . . . too many options to list.

if we traded the #1 overall pick (rights to draft Vince Young) to the possums we would have more than a problem that would be a catasrophe of gigantic proportions, so lets dispel that  now.

PEOPLE!! Casserly already said he is giving him the 8mill and that he thinks Carr was just not Coached Properly. And I agree.I feel like he is still a good QB and yes he has made mistakes and will learn. So casserly already said it WE ARE NOT TAKING A QB.

Yea that's true. Honestly with all the coverage of last night's game I've not heard Vince say anything about what he wants or plans to do. He seems like a real mature young man. I'm sure he'll consider all that's involved, talk to his parents and Coach Brown and make the right decision. My gut feeling says he'll stay in school but I don't have a thing to base that on....

well I'll give you one thing you can't trade Carr if he is not signed, you let him walk and you get nothing but a compenstory pick :)

Depends on which "right thing" you want Casserly to do. As of right now we've got three major groups of posters on this board.

We've got the "Trade the Pick" (TTP) crowd and we've got the "Pick Reggie Bush" (PRB) crowd. They've been fighting for weeks. Now they're joined by the "Pick Vince Young" (PVY) crowd. Who knows how it will turn out? Clearly a bunch of posters aren't going to be happy no matter what Casserly does.

Ummm...one game rarely changes the minds of NFL scouts. The don't think on an emotional level like fans do.

I see him go at #3 at the absolute Highest and would not be shocked if he slipped out of the top 5.

PS: I love Vince Young but I have seen this senario way too may times. He is a great talent but he is raw and he is a high risk, high reward pick. He has all the making of a legend but has the gleam of a being a huge bust.

If he stays at Texas one more year he will win the Heisman and he will be the #1 overall pick. No Doubt in my mind.

This will be the one and only chance Vince Young has of playing for his hometown team. There is no way the Texans will be in a position to draft this high next year. Vince could stay for one more year with UT, but he will also be making himself vulnerable to be drafted by a garbage team in some small market town with cold weather. He could be drafted by the Vikings, Bills, Ravens, etc. Who wants to play for these teams for their entire career knowing they can play at home?

Let's all make a collective agreement to never use the title, "Houston, We have a Problem" ever again.

I think this has been the title for every single newspaper article that talks about things not going right for a Houston team.

For the love of god, please make it stop.

Two problems if he stays:
1) NFL CBA - I heard they were changing the system so that rookies (namely high draft picks) would be limited on years/salary. So, a 3rd or even a 5th pick this year may be better off than the 1st next year.
2) INJURY - HE runs a lot. One bad hit and he is done - or at least makes a lot less money. Now, wouldn't that suck - to be a stockbroker or something like that driving a Camry or similar when you could have had a huge signing bonus plus mercedes plus house plus . . plus. . . plus . . .

Picks 1,2 & 3 are not going to salvage this team or right the ship. Take any one of these players and they will suffer the same fate as Carr. Carr is a very talented QB and unfortunately can only do so much "WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING FOR YOUR LIFE ON EVERY FRIGGIN PASSING DOWN"!!!! He goes back to pass it's either go to primary WR if time permits or to the dump off receiver. There is no time for the 2 or 3 check off receivers. You put Young or Lienert behind that line and WHAT? We're off to the playoffs? Smelling salts please, WALT "FRICKEN" DISNEY bumped his head. Oh my bad, what your saying is we will also fix the O-line. Well, shouldn't Carr be given the same opportunity to play behind an improved O-line? No matter, we are looking at a 2 year restoration, improve the O-line and then go back and judge Carr.
Heck, put Bush behind that line and he'll be able to join DD on the sideline by Week 8 for a robust game of ROCK'M SOCK'M ROBOTS.

Honestly beerlover you have seemed to waffle a bit big dogg. If VY does come out we still trade the pick, primarily to someone other than Tenn would be great, but never trust Casserly. I think Tennesse would sit at three and say out of the 3 top guys we dont care who falls to us we will take them or trade down also. NO is likely going to stay put, because well no one wants to play for them. If NY or another team does trade up for VY I send him packing and give him a texans jacket to sport in his new city. I honestly doubt he comes out this year unless there are more rumblings about the CBA agreement, but if not he could only further solidify his stance as the number 1 pick. I would think he comes out this year if the Texans say we will take him, if not he goes back to his beloved Austin and comes out next year and makes 5M more. My bad needed to edit this post because I say Tennessee is the third pick and implied sending him there instead of NY Jets. Sorry people I would never SELLOUT unless TENNESSEE OFFERED A MONSTER DEAL.

The Jets own the #4 pick. We trade and it looks like this:
1. NYJ (F/ HT)
2. NOS
3. TT
4. HT (F/ NYJ) + (NYJ - ROUND 2 & 3 PICKS)

The way the picks would fall:
1. NYJ Young- Will come out if Houston trades the pick. NY, offers 1st pick
money plus huge endorsement money. NY fans would demand
this trade if made available.

2. NOS Lienert- Get the QB they wanted from the beginning.

3.TENN Bush- They possibly get the guy they wanted or trade out. Bush
will suffer only because the first two teams need a QB.

4. TEX - Be smart with this pick (Preference is Hawk) or trade down and
stock pile more picks.

TexFan i like your outlook, but I think for a franchise QB the asking price is 1st, 2nd, 5th, and next year's 1st, 3rd. We would then send them our 1st and 6th and maybe even Marcus Coleman back(I can dream cant I). This would likely be how the trade worked or if they asked for a player from our team that we could afford to send I would. Hell they are in a cap situation so maybe we unload P-burnt on them for a 3rd or something like that.

If we get the 4th pick, we better get a lot in return and we better fix that O-line with the first pick. I see Hawk going 5-10, not top 5 (but I don't know), he is a great player.

All I want is some instant production. A new QB, RB or WR requires waiting to see if we have fixed the OL. Same for DB's, if there is no pass rush, you can only expect so much right away. Instant production comes much easier in the trenches and I'm sorry if I keep banging this drum. But the last time Houston turned their fate around it started in 1982 - 1985 with Munchak-OG, Mathews-OG, Steinkuhler- OT, Childress- DE and Byrd- DE. We also used trades and free agents to stock the trenches. Don't forget the early picks used on the Defense in 1986-1988. This is what set the foundation for a team that made the Playoffs 7 consecutive years. The only thing we did wrong back then was remember to keep reloading the trenches when our valuable back-ups left to become starters.

Move our #1 and trade DD for a R2 (GB-37 or DET-41). These 2 moves + R3-66 from NO might give us 7 of the first 67 picks. You can start setting your forms for the foundation with that many picks. You take the best available OL, DL or LB with these picks. If an unbelievable DB slips I'd grab him in R3.
Rounds 4-7 is where Casserly and his Staff will earn their keep. Great homework and great picks has spelled Pro Bowlers in a lot of cases. In summary we might be able to pull 11 impact players from this draft. Add a couple of Free Agents be it an OL, DL or DB and we will have really done well.

So you're saying Vince would rather play in NY than his home town. We trade the pick and he comes out. That's not a scenario i like. I mean the Hawks is good but not at the point of losing Young.

Get the paper sacks ready...

David Carr is NOT THE MAN!! Perhaps he has been "coached poorly," but we all know how hard it is to teach an old dog new tricks. Sure, he's mid 20's, but he has been doing the SAME THINGS for four years.

Casserly says this, Casserly says that...he should have been given his papers the same day as Dom. He is just as much a part of the reason we are the laughing stock of the NFL.

if the texans draft vince young, all the firing will have been for nothing, it'll be more bad picks.

aj hawk and david carr would be more wins than young and the current lb's.

Well first of all our problems are in the passing game. Our O-line cant block and we dont have a TE that can block and catch. If we get a TE that would take atleast 1 maybe 2 people to cover. You cant bring the 8th man in the box when you dont know if the TE is going to catch a pass or run block. Here if Bruener is in the 8th man is right there playing a 4th or 5 th (in 34) lb. If Rivers is in there they know its more likely to be a pass. Its hard to call plays when the d can predict what you are going to do by your personnel. If we get a TE that would greatly improve our team and it will also improve DD rushing yards. If there is 1 less person watching the rush thats prob an extra 3-5 yards if the SS is playing in a cover 2 instead of a 3. DD's contract is hard to trade dont expect him to be moved at all. QB, RB and WR are not our problems. We have many holes in other positions.

Our D is alittle Different. Wong's injury hurt us bad. Then Coleman was a let down. P Buch was a let down. Peek didnt live up to what we thought he could. Babin do i need to say more what a loser hiding an injury causing him to play bad and us to lose. CC brown has looked to be a good draft and could be a good replacement. Petey Fagging IMO is not a #2 CB. Walker is signed through 2009 and would cost alot against our cap to release. Payne signed what i think it was a 4yr deal last season. TJ was a let down. Not too much good i can say about the D except Orr needs to be a starter. I am as high on Orr as i was on giving Peek a starting job last season. Greenwood was a horrible signing. The releaseing of Sharper and Glenn was horrible. just all around bad descions and bad luck. I dont know where to start to try to fix our D. The offense is so much easier than the D is right now.

Fine. Why didn't he decide that a long time ago, for crying out loud? :brickwall

Hey Crash, when did Jake Plummer become the QB he is now? Last year, when Denver seen enough of him to know that he was still that QB from ASU playing in a horrible system. Denver rescues him and gives him an offensive line and running backs for Christmas. Amazing how he finds his receivers now. Carr will enjoy the same turn around when we get our OL fixed and Wells, Hollings or Morency becomes a dominant back ( previous post I've traded DD to GB or DET for their 2nd round pick, either would be a fair exchange. ) due to an improved line. Of our 4 headed RB situation, DD is the only one with any real trade power. It makes sense for DET and GB because they will not get a RB of this caliber with their 2nd round pick.
I think the HC job is Kubiak's for the taking, concurring with other posts. He brings in the know how for the OL and my projected 3 headed RB tandem. With his knowledge, they will definately have success by the second season, 2007. As fans, we must be patient in 2006 and allow the new system and draft picks to gel. Year 2 is when we will see this offense hit its stride. It would be really interesting to see which of the 3 RB's arrives at the top first. I would also venture to say, that 1 of those guys will be good for a 1,200+ yard season in 2007. With this, we would finally get to enjoy the precision air attack of Carr to Johnson and Bradford / Gaffney now that he would have the time to check down to his 2nd and 3rd options on pass plays. We drafted him #1 because he was a great QB. He didn't become a bad QB, this team let him down miserably by giving him no protection. These moves will also help make AJ the superstar we knew he was when we drafted him. Hopefully, Kubiak has a DC in mind who can come in here and start the rebuilding process.
Moniker for the 2007 season: "WE STRIKE FAST AND WE STRIKE HARD". Hopefully by 2007 the NEW TEXANS can live up to that on both sides of the ball.
*Note: Why VY will not work here? Simple, too many distractions from family and friends. Like winning the Lottery. Every weekend, who gets tickets to the game!!! Everyday, another family member or friend has a "Get Rich Quick" angle and only needs a few $10K's to get it started. Old high school buddies wanting to be hired as "YES MEN" oops, my bad, I mean his posse. Of course don't forget the expected apperence at every type of family function through the 7th cousins birthday parties and now that you're rich you better not show up empty handed. This guys life would be exciting for about a month or two and then a "Living Hell" will arrive prompt and on time at his door step. And, as in F. Gump, I would say, "Run Vincent... Run" all the way to New York. This guy is going to be a great QB, but it just wouldn't work here.

back to the root problem, Casserly. he is a lame duck GM with one year left on his contract he now holds the future of the Texans in his hands, the keys to the Carr etc.. etc.. etc..

do you trust him to-

a). find value for Carr in a trade scenero

b). trade down with a blockbuster in return

c). select the right coach/system 2nd time around

d). draft Vince Young if available

e). draft Bush if VY is not available

f). can he keep his job in a no win situation

g). will both Casserly & Carr get extensions

would it not be easier to just move on & cut our losses now

Jake Plummer threw 15 TDs in his FIRST season! It took Carr 4 years to throw the same amount. So, with that rationale, Carr will be a great QB (choking on my oxymoron) in his 36th season in the NFL?

Let's try not comparing apples to oranges. Regardless of who our QB is now, if drafting Vince Young will improve on that even slightly, then we need to make the deal. Michael Vick is a great player because he can pass AND he can run. The problem with him this season was that his coaching staff told him to pass more. If running when he sees a hole wins them games, then let him do it. All QBs scramble, but few are the hybrid QB/RB like Vick and now VY. Everyone is worried that he won't be able to hack it in the NFL, but I think he has more of a mindset and passion for this game than people give him credit. He will be able to keep a level head and make the plays that need to be made in the air and on the ground. Young can obviously hold his own in a sold out (and capacity crowd at) Reliant Stadium, as we saw in the Big 12 Championship.

Maybe not in 2006, but if we give him the start this year, we CAN be in the playoffs by 2007.

As for the "why VY won't work here comments." You do realize that Austin is only 2.5 hours from Houston, right? I am sure he gets requests for tickets as it is and he's doing just fine. How many friends and fam do you think saw him at the Big 12 Championship? Oh, and that made him choke. Not. Every NFL player has friends and family that attend games. Think Keenan McCardell's and Michael Strahan's families aren't in mass attendance when we host the Chargers and Giants? Pleeze. The fact that he is the hometown favorite should only make him play BETTER. Wow, you're comments are purely race driven and I can't believe you are so ignorant. Be anything, but please don't embarrass the rest of us by referring to yourself as a Texans fan.

Crash, I seriously do not see the race card here or in my comments. As most viewers will agree there is a big difference between being an exciting but broke college athlete and being an exciting but very wealthy pro athlete. Now, everyone knows you can afford the ticket requests and the future money ideas. This is not just my idea of what could happen but actually it is mentioned quite often by other professional athletes. They say the hardest thing for a young athlete to learn, is how to say no. It is just my opinion, but VY will prosper better away from home and the additional distractions. Houston will prosper by adding more picks over the next 2 drafts and we will be able to address several needs, I seriously couldn't bring myself to say Carr is the sole reason this team has failed.

let me be the first to assure you, Vince isnt broke.

Boosters have and will continue to make sure that he won't have a problem with money for the rest of his life.

hes living the life right now

I agree. He has money, he just can't flaunt it right now. That statement opens whole new can of worms that has really bugged me since the forced closure of the Southwest Conference. Maybe we can start a new thread regarding the true "PLAY FOR PAY" that many want to believe does not exist. Remember when ND got caught, I think they offered up 1 scholarship and the NCAA applauded their honesty. Any SWC coach got caught giving a player .50 for a candybar or giving a kid a ride home after practice and the NCAA was damn near foaming at the mouth and ready to slap the death penalty on them.
