Vince Young, Face of the Franchise

Nighthawk

Rookie
At halftime I started a thread extolling the virtues of Vince Young. The moderators chose to move it to the DRAFT board.

What it said was something like this:

Watching the game tonight (Rose Bowl) there's one player on the field that is miles ahead of all the others, looks like a man playing in a game full of kids. It's hard to believe he's THAT much better than all the other players on the field. It's crazy.

What's the knock on him, or does he just happen to be having a spectacular night? Is he usually much less impressive? The way he throws the ball, with great confidence and accuracy, as if it weighed what a tennis ball weighs, hits guys all over the field, finds the open receiver instantly when he scans the field (would that Carr could even FIND receivers), plus his mobility, quick in the pocket, running, authority, throws himself on the guy's fumble, for heaven's sake--why is this guy not 1st on the draft list?

I say we draft Vince Young, or trade down as much as we can and still draft Vince Young. He's going to ba an NFL star of the 1st magnitude.

That was at halftime.

Now, the game over and Young having won it more or less by sheer will and talent, a great supporting cast, a coach with the good sense to let Young play his game, I am fully persuaded we ought to make Vince Young the first pick in the draft this year.

Lots of problems, of course, chief among which is what to do with Carr. But if ever there were a sure bet, Young looks an awful lot like it.

Let's go for. Let's do the smart thing, the right thing, the best thing, and get this guy who will be a star in the NFL for years to come. Bush might be (though his performance tonight suggests he's all too easy to stop with good, fast defense), Leinart might--he looked fabulous in the second half. Carr certainly doesn't hold a candle (after 4 years in the NFL!) to either Leinart or Young, and most likely will never be a top QB in the league.

All of this is moot, of course, if Young decides to stay in school.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!

After watching Vince. He is the real deal! I saw him play his last H.S. game in the Dome against Austin Westlake. I said he was great for H.S. But can he do it in the College level. He answered all my Questions tonight. He made it look so easy! It`s a done deal. Texans will Guarantee Vince they will take him in the 1st round and he can come back to Houston to play at home. I bet his Mom is getting his bedroom at home ready . :redtowel: Get use to Young to Johnson combination;-) WELL DONE VINCE!!!!!

Ive always known that vince young is a better player that any of those overrated ****s at USC are, but i never heard that he wanted to go to the draft. If he decides to go pro this year, i say, **** reggie bush, i knew texas would show the media how theyre *****s and that they were hyping a team that was hopeless.

Did bush do any execution during the rose bowl?, he didnt live up to the hype.

82 rushing yards and 1 TD. total, thats it. I saw him hit behind the line at least 5 different times by a tired, cramped, and injury-infested texas defense. Lendell White made more plays for USC than Reggie Bush did, where's his heisman? One occasional touchdown and barely any yards compared to your hype, im sorry, but that may win NFL games against the 5 worst teams in the league, but if you expect to get by Indy, NE, Seattle, or the defenses of chicago and washington, one touchdown a game by your "best" offensive player isnt going to help.

I say, if vince young is available in the draft, to hell with any other options, draft young, get carr the hell out of QB, he can move on or be 2nd string, but he's had enough time to "improve", and he's actually regressed. Move to the end of the bench Carr, Young will start if he becomes available.

I dont know about you, but that kind of sounds like common sense to me.

I agree with you. Ignore the blind Carr loyalists.

I've heard the same thing through the years about Cunningham, Kordell, McNabb, Culpepper and Vick. Once injuries start mounting on these running QB's they become less spectacular and have to rely on what a QB is really there for, being a QB, not a draw playing runner. Young is good but did you see him lay a ball into the hands of a reciever on the run too often tonight? I may be wrong but that was my assessment.

I saw Young place the ball perfectly on a few occasions while on the run.

The difference between Young and those that you have listed is that VY has never taken a big hit. He never takes that hit that would knock him out of a game. That's why I dont think injuries will be a big deal...

McNair is not going to bring in a rookie quarterback this year. It isn't going to happen...Vince played a heck of a game and deserves all of the props that are heading his way. However, just as many of you state that Bush cannot run wild on NFL teams, the same argument may be made of Vince. Let's see how all of this pans out before running wild...if that is possible around here.

For all you diehard Longhorn fans...does any of this "forget bush, draft Young" have to do with...well, who was playing on which team?

Hmm....

I heard the exact same thing with Vick too. Runners always get hit in the NFL.

Hopefully you're kidding.

I'm sure you wanted Vince Young after his decent game against A&M. Or even after the Big 12 Championship game. Vince Young may be a good QB in the NFL, but we don't even know how good David Carr is! He's never been able to be the type of QB that he's used to being. He's not a 3 step drop and throw a 2 yard screen QB. He's the type of guy who takes 5 steps back and watches the play unfold. Until Carr gets an O-line to protect him, we don't know how good he can be. I stick with Carr.

stick with carr and you will never see this franchise win a playoff game

What more is there to say? Come home!!! This guy is a franchise player! Do not waste his talent and make him a receiver. He is a leader. Build a franchise around his talent. Please don't screw this up Uncle Charley!!! You already drafted the wrong Johnson last year (Travis instead of Derrick).

COME HOME VINCE!!!!!!!

I agree. Here's my thinking, so bear with...
If Young comes out, the Texans should take him just for the simple fact that we have NO IDENTITY, with the exception of losing. We all see he doesn't need a line to protect him, he can throw the ball anywhere he wants to and do it with accuracy. He's coming into a brand new situation with the Texans' coaching staff so the schemes will be tailored for him. We wouldn't have to give Carr the $8 mil. bonus and use CARR as trade bait. The only thing Vince can obtain in college, at this point, is the Heisman and does he really want to risk an injury just for a hunk of lead? Umm, I think not. Before, it was kinda simple picking Bush with the 1st pick and everybody said that we should trade that pick because we have serviceable RB's, but now that could be all for not if Vince says, "Hello, my name is Vince Young and I will forgo my last year of eligibility and join the NFL draft." I know that may sound way off but it is pretty cool to speculate!! :yahoo:

I totally agree, just wish Bob does as well!

I think Bobby Mac would give this serious consideration. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Bob is a businessman FIRST and he absolutely understands one thing, if nothing else, THE BOTTOM LINE!!! Putting Young as the new face of the Texans would put BUTTS IN THE SEATS!!

2. National attention--regardless of what anyone says, attention of any kind is better than none at all. Curiosity breeds revenues!!

3. Atlanta was the laughing stock of the NFL for a while, until they got Vick. Then they got a lot of recognition and they sucked, but they did get the media, advertisers, and investors to take notice.

4. Vince wouldn't suck for long if Kubiak is on board. We are all very aware what he has done with QB's. I know there are a few O.C.'s that are salivating to get a chance to mold the Young-ster.

5. His mom, I believe, goes to Windsor Village United Methodist Church, whose pastor is Kirbyjon Caldwell, who is also a minority investor in the Texans.....see where I'm going with that!! :excited:

Once again, it's good to speculate!! (and DREAM BIG!!!)

What are the chances of drafting VY and making him a tailback or receiver, ala Matt Jones? The guy's big enough and seems fast enough to play either one well.....Just a thought

And Bush is taking hits?

Bush does take hits but they're mostly glancing shots, not full-on slobberknockers. That dude will be a beast in the "biggs". I just hope he has his head on straight and don't become a prima donna, like a certain reciever we all know!!!

1 game and he is a saviour. LOL, no way...

The kid needs to stay in school 1 more year cause he is not ready for the NFL yet. Please people, give me a break...

Having watched Young all year, I have been a long-time believer that he needs another year of development. He hasn't been totally dominating a game in a long while the way he has in the Rose Bowls. He has been floating some of his balls, and he his yardage was impressive, but not titanic, if you know what I mean. However, seeing him play in this year's Rose Bowl with the same finesse, confidence, and ability as he played it last year shows me this kid will rise above it all. And he was throwing much better. He has really improved his throwing capabilities. I would say join the NFL. Don't stay in another year just for some hardware. There is nothing that can improve on this year as opposed to a multi-million-dollar contract, baby. Matt should have left last year. VY should leave this year.

I hear "he's not ready yet, he's not ready yet" and just shake my head. What more does he have to do to prove that he could make it in the "biggs"? A 4th year in college does not mean he'd be ready for the NFL either. There are a LOT of 4th year grads who have turned into busts in the NFL. He defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl as a Sophomore, he led us to a 13-0 season this year, his only reason for coming back would be to get the Heisman and for what, to risk injury. I think not! If he comes out and the Texans pick him up, he won't play the first year anyway, so you could consider that his Senior year but in the Pro's. He'll be coming into a new coaching staff, so the offensive schemes will be more tailored to his style of play. Not to mention what bringing him home to play would do for our IDENTITY CRISIS that we do have. The stars couldn't be more aligned for Vince and us, right now!! Getting the experience as an NFL QB, instead of risking the senior year to injury, is absolutely priceless. Take a chance on homegrown talent, we can't do any worse!!:thankyou:

But remember all those QB`s you mentioned haven`t made last minute come back wins in bowl games and on the road. IE: Ohio State. Vince just finds a way to win. Yuo know when the say "he has it" Vince has it!

Kordell Stewart had a 64 yard hail mary to win the game with time expiring. I believe McNabb had a last minute comeback as well. Maybe against Virginia Tech.

Hmm....

Not really. For most people the difference is who had a great game most recently. If somehow the same two teams played again next week and USC somehow figured out Vince Young while at the same time Bush broke loose for 150 yards then many of the people screaming for Vince Young would sway back over to the Bush side.

It's kind of sad really.

Oh how I knew this was gonna be the topic driving in this morning - even in both sports stations it was "all Young, all the time". Now apparently, the Texans need to draft Young. I guess since Bush didn't have his 5 TD game, that he lost his diety status to Young.

I think all 3 will make good additions to whatever team chooses them (assuming the 2 of 3 declare). Whatever method the Texans move forward with, I would like to see the fight UT had down by two scores and playing to the end and not the sitting on a lead (which I even thought they had) like USC did... and Texans did last year.

Go for the kill and don't let up till the clock reads double zero.

Actually, this Longhorn fan was rooting for Bush to have a great game in a loss. And for VY to stay in school and not go to Tennessee.

Now this Longhorn fan believes that it is completely sellable to management and our fan base to not pay Carr's bonus, draft VY and pass on Bush.

Bush's play was everything I feared against a fast defense making the edges more difficult. I have no idea what sorta player you would be getting without a LenDale softening things up. But I really really really wanted him to have a great game because I thought his drafting was inevitable.

I wanted VY to stay in school for another year as a Longhorn fan, but as a Texans fan, I want him to be in a Texans jersey so bad it makes my teeth hurt.

Incredible the change in one day. VY still has alot to learn. He is a WINNER and that is his best attribute but it scares me that no other QB with his style of play has nopt gotten beaten up in the NFL. Vince Young was awesome and that was incredible but Bush is the best bet for the Texans. I saw things that impressed me. He ran hard and hit people to finish plays. When he did get in the open field his speed beat anything the Texans have. The bonehead pitch, notwithstanding, he made some awesome moves on that screen pass. They just didn't get him the ball. AND he did get most of the attention and it left Leinart with all kinds of time. LenDale was part of that too.
