A Carr poll

What should the Texans do about David Carr?

I'm assuming everybody recognizes that Carr hasn't done a splendid job as QB. Some think it's mostly on the coaches and the line, others think it's mostly on Carr, some think it's 50/50.

In any case, we have a new head coach and a new world out there ahead of us, and I'm wondering what might be the concensus from board members about how the team should proceed from here. Personally, I don't think bringing in a serious and capable free agent like Kitna could possibly hurt our situation. In fact, I think it only IMPROVES our situation, but that's just me. I wanted to get a sense of the overall spread of opinion on the board.
 
Banks should be out, Ragone should step up and be a solid #2 - and yeah, he may need to practice on his own time to improve and show worth in team practice. If he's not gonna be the #2, go get the players some gatorade.

I'm all for both sides actually - get some coaching in to improve Carr and a solid #2 to push him. I don't think he'll lose the #1 spot unless someone really outshines him in practice (or game tape if a veteran). As for a name... don't have one yet.
 
I say get the guy someone who can block better than a pop warner team .... another reciever besides AJ and last but certianly not least someone that isnt gonna restrict his growth by running an offense that my 7 year old could figure out .... then ask me again :twocents:
 
I said ask again later cause im not real sure at this point.

On one hand.. i think we definatly need to see him under a different coach. On the other hand.. competition never hurt anybody. But, to get competition.. I think we should draft it.. because Ragone doesnt seem to be impressing anyone, and we need a young QB to start grooming now.. either to use as trade bait, or replace Carr when is shortened career is over.

But then we cant really afford to draft a QB on the first day.. cause I really think we need to spend those picks on Bush and at least a couple of Olinemen.

So.. I guess right now I feel like we need to keep things as they are, then draft a QB on the first day next season. If our season goes badly again id say we should go for Vince Young next year :)

But its NOT going to go badly.. we are gonna have a very good new coaching staff that is going to use our talent correctly and we are gonna have our first season above .500 ......*crosses fingers and tosses salt over his shoulder*
 
I agree... I think we have our wide recievers set but of course we need to put a better OL for him.On the other hand I think he holds on to the ball a little to long.If u saw the SF game, Tony Banks(veteran) made a lot of 3 step drop and let it go passes.He released the ball quickly and thats what I think Carr needs to do.
 
It's not my decision but if it were this next year would be a make it or break it year for David.

Of course that is not happening because I'm fairly sure they're going to pay him that big bonus. And with that kind of money being handed out he's gonna be the starter for some time.
 
Personally, I don't want to spend one extry nickel on the QB position.

We have enough difficulties without being one of those revolving QB teams. More often than not, that sort of situation is kinda ugly. Banks is OK (better with a few more snaps in practice), and Ragone is nice to have, though I don't particularly care for a backup lefthanded QB.

Carr is obviously pretty durable and I'd like to see what he could do given the chance in a revised system.

This is not a priority for me in the offseason given that we are already going to go through a lot of changes, and other parts of our team I believe are more pressing. (This is not to say that Carr lit up the world this year, but I've seen enough potential there to think that some more talent around him would help).

But I don't really have a strong opinion on this.

IMO I'd like to see the Texans let the option expire then negotiate with him as a FA along with all the other FA. I don't think anyone will offer DC money anywere near the amount of the option. Renegotiate the contract with DC at a lower amount and save a little money. If we lose DC, well so be it. Its not like DC has done that much for the Texans nor has he proven that he will amount to anything more second rate QB. We can take the money we save on the QB position and sure up some of the other areas, then pay for a good QB sometime in the next two years.
 
Competition. I would have liked to see either Banks or Ragone EARLIER in the season just to see if it is Carr or the Oline, receivers, and scheme that are casue of a stagnant offense. I liked what I saw from Banks against SF. He is a capable backup. He threw the ball downfield, in the middle, hit different receivers, called audibles, played with confidence, and seemed to have the respect of his teammates. Sure he threw 2 interceptions and some erratic passes but he hasn't taken a snap all season. I'll blame those mistakes on rust. One thing is certain, Corey Bradford must go. He is the Matt Stevens on the offensive side.
 
Carr might not be destined to be the "greatest" (who knows? idonno: ), but I think he's got the skills to be a successful QB if he was in the right situation. Like maybe a team with a consistent pass protection...and maybe a valid no. 2 receiver (is that too much to ask?).

We've got too many other holes to fill to spend too much money on another 'starting' QB (good enough to challenge DC). I say we give him another season or two with a new coaching staff, and then we'll really be able to evaluate him.
 
Here is something that I haven't seen yet, or at least while I have been lurking over half this season...

Trade him to NO for their 1st pick.

They need a QB. It would be to their advantage to get a QB who is tough, already used to the speed of the NFL , and who shows potential.

From watching Carr (as much as I was able to before the Austin area was virtually blacked out) he seemed flat. Like a hitter in a slump, he needs a change of scenery to snap him out of it. Here, he has not faced a serious challenge to his starter status, his starting o-line has been shuffled about, and he hsan't had a consistant running game to keep opposing defenses honest. The latter was not a knock per se on DD but simply a fact due to him not being able to play a complete season this year.

We need all the extra talent we can get, but we can't afford to pass up the obvious talent of Bush to get it. This would allow us to add an obvious talent in Bush and get either more picks via dealing the #2 or picking the next best player we need.

Certainly it would leave us without a viable starting QB on the roster, but as Tampa and Baltimore has shown us in the recent past you do not need Joe Montana nor Troy Aikman at the QB position to succeed in this league.

No way they give up the #2 pick for Carr ...they wouldnt even give up their second rounder for him
 
Why would we trade him? I mean first of all HE'S YOUNG. Let's remember that. For all the GOD GOOD GRACIOUS ON EARTH that Peyton MANNING was coming out he wasn't that good for his first 4 years people.

Most qb's don't become great until they really really mature. I voted for one more year b4 bringing anyone else in.

Don't get the kid scared that his job is in jeopardy and make hims start pressing.......SEE DETROIT J. HARRINGTON.

I say get him a new coach, new system, improved line, and more opportunities with a BETTER DEFENSE.

1st PICK GO DEFENSE 2nd and 3rd GO LINEMAN!!!!
 
I gaurantee Carr is twice the QB next year than he was next year. Carr had a rough year, along with anyone else. I think everyone is going to show vast leaps and bounds next year. The right coach is going to make one hell of a difference. Any coach we get is going to be better than what we just went through.

By the way...I didn't get a chance to talk about this before, so I'm getting on my soap-box now. The way D-Rob played against SF was embarrassing. P-Buch put out more effort than D-Rob did that game. If he didn't want to play, he should have got off the field. Absolute joke.

Having witnessed QB debacles at UT (Applewhite vs. Simms anyone? (Don't tell his Dad I said that)) and Dallas (Testaverde, Carter, Henson), I think it would be in the team's best interest to keep the QB they have and not add any major ones. (Besides, we have the NFL Europe MVP on our list - who else can boast such a QB roster?) I have seen potential in Carr, and I would like to see what he will do when given command of the offense as was seen when he was allowed to call the plays. And we have to get the guy a line that can protect him (i.e., a line without Gargamel at the helm). Put him behind a line that features a new Center, Pitts, Wand, Wade and Weigert and let's see what happens then.

I'll second that. I think Carr does have potential given the right coach, the right line and the right playcalling. Goodness knows he can bounce right back after being sacked 4 million times and doesn't appear to be particularly injury prone. We need to spend our money on some serious offensive linemen and defensive players to fill in the rather large gaps we have in those areas. When Carr has a decent line, I think we will all see him improve by leaps and bounds. He shows flashes of great promise, even with a bad line and playcalling a 3 year old can predict. I predict we will see some good stuff out of Carr next year. Save the money for more important needs.

If you have a good line and good receivers, you can make it through with a decent qb - and imo Carr is going to be more than decent.

One thing to remember is that regardless of whose scheme comes in next, there will be growing pains. It'll probably look mighty ugly before it starts looking good. Expecting next year to be a breakout year for Carr is asking way too much.

Oh, and I also agree that there's no reason to bring back Banks if it's a money issue. I doubt it will be--no one else wanted him last offseason. Ragone should get a chance to be the permanent #2.

I'll have to agree with this too. Carr can be an exceptional quarterback, in my opinion, IF he has actual time to set to look for recievers.
 
Right now 52% of the voters want to give Carr 1 or 2 more years, 8% want to draft some competition and only 22% want to bring in a decent free agent QB as a really viable "2nd starter."

Frightening. I hope the new coaches are more enlightened. More than that, I simply don't understand the thinking. More than fifty percent of the respondents DO NOT WANT TO CHALLENGE CARR TO EARN THE POSITION! This is astonishing. Fascinating, but astonishing.
 
I don't care if it is Ragone or a FA, but no matter who it is, I think it should be an open competition with the guy that proves himself getting the starting job...I don't think you should give it to anyone without a fair competition.
