Trump plans to make a run at buying the Bills
Posted by Mike Florio on April 14, 2014, 8:58 PM EDT

When Donald Trump first disclosed his interest in the Bills, he said he’d been approached about investing. Now, he says he wants to take over.

Trump told Tim Graham of the Buffalo News that the one-time owner of the USFL’s New Jersey Generals intends to make a run at buying the Bills.

“I’m going to give it a heavy shot,” Trump said. “I would love to do it, and if I can do it I’m keeping it in Buffalo.”

Of course, Trump wouldn’t be doing that as a favor to the people of Buffalo, but for his own convenience.

“I live in New York, and it’s easier for me to go to Buffalo than any other place,” Trump said. “Where am I going to move it, some place on the other side of the country, where I have to travel for five hours?”

Regardless of the motivation, the end result of a Trump purchase of the Bills would be that they would remain the Buffalo Bills.

Trump apparently can afford to buy the team. Per Graham, Forbes estimates that Trump is worth $3.9 billion. Graham reports that but “sources close to [Trump] claim he’s worth almost three times that.”

It sounds like the source close to Trump is Trump himself, because that sounds like something Trump would say. Whether it’s $3.9 billion or $11.7 billion, he can afford it. The real question is whether he can get enough votes to approve his entry into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world.

I just don't know if I can get used to calling them by their new name.....the Trump Bills. :D :D Funny, Trump's bills almost was the end of him at one time.

They're in the second quarter in Buffalo now, Miami is down 10-7 but has the ball in the Trump red zone............
Yep, a lot of getting used to...

I wouldn't want Trump owning my local NFL team. It'll soon become as much about him as it will the team. That's OK with the head coach, but not the owner.

Agree.

Also, I'm not sure if Trump has the cash. Sure, he's rich, but, my understanding is that a lot of his money is leveraged and tied up in loans and real estate.

NFL owners tend to have a good billion dollars or so in cash on hand. Not sure if Trump has that.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Donald Trump is one of the biggest publicity "prostitutes" going, and I think that's all that this is about - an easy way to get attention.

I agree that he likely isn't financially able to pull this off, but I don't think that's his true goal anyway. To put it mildly, I'll be very surprised if he's the next owner of the Bills.

If I was a Bills fan, I'd be happy with any potential owner that promised to keep the team in Buffalo.

Trump has very deep pockets and I have no doubt would want to win. While he'd certainly be very visible, that's not necessarily a bad thing. His willingness to spend his money to build a winning roster could attract some talent.

Will they get rid of the Buffalo on their helments and replace it with a big "T", or will they put a big blondish hairpiece on it to look like a Davy Crockett Coon skin cap kinda thing?

He'll figure out soon enough that there better places he can make big bucks with the Bills. I wouldn't be rushing out to buy any PSLs if I were a Bills fan.

It would be interesting to have Trump and Jerry go at each other in pregame interviews.........just like like the WWE.

Agreed. And from what I think I know about Trump and how his mind works I have just the place he'll want to move.

New York City. No, I'm not drinking, NYC. He'll sell the move as the only REAL New York team left, and now it's in the Big Apple. The same city that was "forsaken" by the other two teams. The team will be in his back yard with a new stadium (of course). The team will be feeding on the NY population with the NY name as a hook New Yorker's won't refuse. Three teams right in there together but only one "New York" team. The publicity created by the audacity would keep Trump happy for...well.....days even...lol.

Hell, he'd probably even go after the Jets and Giants to stop using the New York name...lol.

Before you laugh, just remember where you heard it first. :peek:

As long as Trump would be willing to hire the best people possible to put the best product possible on the field, I would have no problem with Trump becoming owner of my team.

I don't think NFL owners will let Trump become an owner because he will do whatever it takes to win and that goes against the grain of most NFL owners.

Well, the potential to move exists with any new ownership group. Buffalo is no longer an economically viable market. The city has seen better days, and those days were decades ago.

At least Trump is "saying" that he'd want to keep the Bills in Buffalo. If anyone could afford to absorb the financial burden of such a commitment, it is a guy like Trump.

John Mara/Kraft run the NFL, so for the reasons stated above, it's doubtful that Trump will ever be allowed to own a NFL team.

Some of you may be too young to remember the USFL and the Gamblers.........and how Trump and his arrogance one-handedly destroyed a truly innovative and FUN football league.

Reminiscing about the USFL, a.k.a. the fun league, 30 years later
Interesting article. I won't dispute Trump's influence in ultimately dooming the USFL. However, it should also be remembered that the league was already in trouble when he came along, as teams were paying far more for players than they could afford.

Trump advocated a gamble that failed, but the league was doomed because folks just were not interested enough in spring football to make it an economically sustainable model. Instead of trying to be a league that could be a gap between college and NFL, they went head-to-head in competing for players like the AFL did in the 1960's. But, but the 1980's the NFL was much larger, more powerful, and had a lot deeper pockets than they did in the '60's.

To your point, from the article:

Sure, the USFL was losing money. And sure, the rosters of the Chicago Blitz and Arizona Wranglers were, ahem, traded for one another. And sure, the Breakers would eventually move to Portland (their third city in three seasons) and the Stars to Baltimore. And sure, the members of the San Antonio Gunslingers rushed to the bank on pay day for fear of their checks bouncing, while the Express went bankrupt. And, sure, Rozier was kind of a bust (792 yards as a rookie) and many of the league's quarterbacks were NFL wash-outs (Birmingham's Cliff Stoudt, Philadelphia's Chuck Fusina, Chicago's Vince Evans) and David Dixon -- the man who initially came up with the idea for a USFL -- grew disgusted by the unregulated spending.

Despite all that, the USFL had a chance -- a real chance -- of surviving as a spring entity, of getting past the trial-and-error phase, clamping down upon the spending and simply playing an entertaining genre of football.

Alas, Trump wouldn't allow such a thing.
I don't know how it would have turned out, as they were on shaky ground, but Trump killed any chance they had at firming up their foothold, IMO.

I don't remember all the history, the league just started falling apart but the steak in the heart was the move to a fall league. The USFL might have had another season or two before dying, or maybe have even survived had the stupid move to fall football hadn't happened. People were genuinely beginning to like football in the spring.

yep. He was certainly a factor. But, like I said, it was a gamble. And gambles can go two ways. Succeed, and you're a hero. Fail, and you're a goat. His gamble obviously failed, and he became the point man for all the failures of the USFL.

Check this out, before Trump even arrived on the scene:

After deviating from "The Dixon Plan" in the league's inaugural season, the United States Football League was plagued with financial problems and consequently, franchise instability.
- Source

If you read the history of the USFL, Trump was brought in at the end because the league was suffering closure due to financial problems. They needed more rich guys to invest because they were headed for failure. This is why I simply cannot put it all on Trump. It is revisionist history to make it all Trump's fault.

I don't remember all the history, the league just started falling apart but the steak in the heart was the move to a fall league. The USFL might have had another season or two before dying, or maybe have even survived had the stupid move to fall football hadn't happened. People were genuinely beginning to like football in the spring.
Look at 1983-1985 attendance records. For instance, the Houston Gamblers averaged 28,000 per game in 1984, and 19,000 per game in 1985. Those numbers don't even fill up half of the Astrodome.

More folks were liking spring ball, but it was simply not enough to make the league economically viable when they were paying NFL salaries.

The gamble to the fall schedule was because people like football in the fall.

The USFL was built to eventually merge with the NFL, not to compete head-to-head with it.

It's interesting to note that the "new" USFL that recently shut down has been bought out by a new large entity. They plan to reorganize and return to the field March 2015 and end in June, just before NFL TC. They will limit the number of players, the number of coaches and the numbers in the each team's executive office, thus making the operational costs more realistic. I hope that this new upstart is successful and breed a new source of developmental players for the NFL.

As an NFL owner, Trump will WIN! Contrary to popular belief Trump does NOT wear a hair piece. That is his real hair. Believe it or not.

My only problem with Trump as owner is that even if tries to be a low profile owner(probably not happening) the media will over talk him everything he does or does not do. Think jerry jones plus dan synder times two.
