Texans bringing in RB Andre Brown for visit - signed.

Merge if needed.

With Ben Tate leaving for the greener wallet and (perhaps) greener pastures of Cleveland, the Texans found themselves short in the backfield.

They’re going to look at a possible addition today.

A league source tells PFT that Giants running back Andre Brown will visit the Texans today. The Raiders had previously shown some interest.

Brown has played reasonably well in the times he was healthy, though that hasn’t been often. He missed eight games last year after a broken leg in the preseason, rushing for 492 yards in the half-season he played.

Was pretty decent at times with the giants, but really has had trouble staying on the field.

Brown is an upgrade talent wise. The guy is a complete RB. (Speed/vision/good hands/pass pro.

He needs to become a 3rd down/GL back who doesn't touch the ball more than 10-15 times a game. More than that and you can count on him getting hurt.

Foster/Brown/Johnson/UDFA. Not too bad, but I don't think either Foster or Brown will last a full season.

Brown has a decent skill set, but I don't think he's ever played a full season in his career.
I won't hate it if he is signed, but would not have high expectations of him making any significant contribution.

He has had a ruptured achilles, 2 broken legs and a 4 game suspension for drugs (he said adderall) which was overturned on appeal.

Broken legs are not ordinarily connected nor make future injury more likely. Maybe Doc can dig up some more details an opine if he is unlucky or having problems which make injury prone a fair label.

Really liked him up until that recent injury. I didn't get a chance to watch him a lot last year after the injury. If he healed well, I'm all for it at a low price.

All three of his leg injuries involved his left leg. The first fracture was a severe fibula fracture which required surgical plating. The last fracture, sustained after a direct helmet hit to the leg, was also of the left fibula, but was undisplaced and required no surgical intervention. The fracture site was evidently just outside of the bone's boundary with the plate. Just like Gronk's arm refracture, the plated bone is made very rigid, doesn't bend and is extremely unlikely to break again, but the areas adjacent to the plates now have to compensate for the rigidity of a large segment of the fibula, and bend more extremely to stress.........making those areas always at greater risk than normal to snap/fracture under stress. Opposing savvy Ds may just decide to target this area in the future. This having occurred at the end of the preseason. It may be somewhat telling that if he were considered that valuable, why did the Giants not decide to hang onto him (rather than IR him with designation to return) and bring him back 6-8 weeks later as is done with most fibula stress fractures, instead of after 10 weeks. I believe that they were concerned with dealing with yet another fracture occurring adjacent to the plate, especially if it were not given maximum time to heal and strengthen.

He’d provide solid cover behind Arian Foster, assuming he can stay on the field.

When healthy last year, I thought he ran really well. At the right price he'd be a good fit for us IMO.

Curious to see what his contract looks like, but assuming we got him at a good price I like the signing. Andre is a very capable back in all aspects of the game, a 70/30 split with him and Foster could net a very productive backfield.

Texans sign free agent running back Andre
Brown to a one-year deal worth 645, 000.

Good deal I guess.

I wouldn't pencil him in as Foster's back up though. Going to have to earn it.

And really, Foster is going to have to show up if he wants to play as much as he thinks he deserves to. I think OB is going to be more willing to spread the load if other guys prove capable.

O'Brien is on the record as wanting three different types of RB.
A three down back, a 1st and 2nd down type back, and a dedicated 3rd down back.
Foster is the three down back.
Would Brown fit in as the 1st and 2nd down guy?

Nice bargain bin shopping right there. Now bring in some UDFAs to compete and our RBs should be in shape for 2014.

6' 230#, I see him as more of a 1st-2nd down back.

Negatives:
Injured all of 2009
Injured all of 2011
Injured 1/2 of 2013
Up until 2012, he accumulated a -0.5 ypc
Last year with highest carry number, he managed a 3.5 ypc
His first 3 years, with his exhausting 2 carries, he never had even a single fumble....... last year, 3 fumbles.....all lost

Positives:

Cheap
Low 5-year mileage........by chance......bad chance
This is an even numbered year.......maybe won't be injured......that much

Two injury riddled running backs. Yay!!!

Name a RB, that gets significant carries, that hasn't had a major injury in their career. I can only think of one, and that's Chris Johnson, because he avoids taking big hits. He's not a guy that fights for yards.

I like the signing. I want multiple, quality backs, rather than just one really good one and hope he survives the season.

With foster coming back from a back injury, I would rather pay cj 4m per yr than risk foster going down and brown being injury prone.

Great pickup & allows us to go 3rd day for a pick for RB, I'm mocking Tyler Gafney in 5th/

That would be a good pick. Another late rounder I like is LaDarius Perkins of Mississippi State. He could really help in the passing and return game.

I think Perkins may be the type of 3rd down RB that BOB is looking for.

I'm ok with this signing, it doesn't thrill me because of Brown's injury history, but I'd sure like to see the Texans bring in some O-line help. An OT or a guy that can play both OT and OG. We need O-line help more than we need depth at RB.

His name is David Yankey and we will draft him in the 2nd round.

If you look back at Brown's history, he was an awesome goal line rusher in 2012. He had 8 rushing TDs that way. So I think he definetly helps us in the red zone.

I would like us to take Andre Williams RB from Boston College in the 4th.

In a battle of the Brown swapping teams saga, New York got a better deal with ex-Oiler Gary Brown....but Andre Brown is a nice signing despite my ability to amuse myself remembering useless NFL trivia.

The earrings. I don't get earrings.

Why do people say this when Foster is one of the best goal line RBs in the league? I mean its always nice to have a guy who is good scoring but it isn't like Foster needed help in that area (putting aside injury - people have been saying it the whole time Foster has been here).
