Considering all the Matt Schaub threads, this one is long overdue.

Schaub made Houston a true contender for the first time since Moon left in 1993. His work ethic is unquestioned, and he has played through concussions, ear manglings, shoulder separations, and injuries that were never publically avowed. The gratitute owed him should not be witheld because of one aberrant season. When the disappointment of 2013 fades, fans will remember the Schaub performances that made us proud of Houston football again. For me, these stand out:

- December 7, 2008: Schaub proves himself as a franchise QB by throwing for over 400 yards against the Packers at Lambeau in sub freezing temperatures. The defining moment is the 45 yard play action pass to Andre that sparked the comeback, and really marked the beginning of the team's new offensive identity.

- September 19, 2010: This happened on my birthday, and all I wanted was a win. Texans vs. Redskins, and Houston is down by seven with 2:11 remaining in the 4th. Schaub tells Andre, "Go up and get it. You're the best receiver in the league." It results in a photo of Andre that's comparable to Muhammed Ali over Sonny Liston, and Houston wins in overtime. - November 18, 2012: The Houston defense surprisingly allowed Jacksonville to score 37 at Reliant, and the offense had to climb out of a hole. Schaub threw two interceptions, but he also threw five TD's and tied Warren Moon's record for the second most yards in a single game at 527. Highlights here.

I'm really going to miss that passing attack. When it was in rythm, it was a lot of fun to watch.
 
He's persona-non-grata here after last season and the end of the season before that but I really think we would have had a good chance at a SB if Fat Albert hadn't fallen on his foot. He had some great times here and played some great games (even if his defense let him down time and again.)
 
The good Schaub years were fantastic, the bad Schaub years were horrible. I'm sure when AJ is inducted into the hall of fame he'll have something nice to say about his years with Schaub.
 
During the season and in the heat of the moment I wouldve said "screw off." But the fact of the matter is, no matter what disasters he turned into and demise he lead, our best days so far were with ScHwab at the helm. He never caused a scene and conducted himself professionally by all accounts. I have nothing but heartfelt farewells for the qb who so expertly set a new record for consecutive pick 6's. Good luck captain hook.
 
It's a shame that Schaub had about the worst 4 game stretch a QB can have. It's even more of a shame that's all Texans fans will remember about him.

He gave us his all and outplayed his physical capabilities. I have nothing but respect for the guy.

Count me in as one of the people okay with seeing him go, but grateful for the good years. Matt had his good years with us. I'll never forget 2010 in particular, when he led so many comebacks only for our ****ty defense to squander it away. What could have been, right?

Anyway, I hope Schaub finds his old mojo again and has some good years in Oakland. Just not vs us. :kitten:
 
Matt Schaub, I appreciate you maxing out all of your god given talent to pull the Texans out of laughing stock hell into mediocrity, despite us now having the #1 ovrl pick in the entire draft due to our worst record in the league.. I'll never forget the prolific games you did have, but I'll also never forget how many times this team spit the bit in the "biggest games in franchise history games" and how many times you spit the bit against the winning/elite teams in this league.

All in all, I appreciate the fact that you were at least competent and not the train wreck that Carr was.. and I'm not even going to lie. The way this offense played before Wade showed up.. if they were paired with that type of defense (especially the first year) they might of been able to do something,... (I mean Yates even won a playoff game.) Sadly though, your peek performance years were gone well beyond that. Oh well.. good luck in Oakland.

Like many, I generally think of Schaub as pre-injury and post-injury. But that stretch of 11-1 was Schaub at his best, and that was post-injury. Which leads me to a game that I can't leave out:

- September 23rd, 2012: The media will only commemorate this as the game that Schaub lost a piece of his ear, but Texans fans know it was more significant than that. This game may have been Schaub's finest performance. He was fearless when stepping up in the pocket, and his throws were focused and accurate. This is the game that had me believing that the Texans were going to blaze a path to the Super Bowl, and they almost did. The play where Mays collides with Schaub is at 4:59 here. What may have been forgotten is that the throw would've been Andre's second touchdown if not for a freak leg whip by Champ Bailey that kicked the ball out of Andre's hands.

I think there are a couple of things at play there. First, CnD said that with that sort of injury, it would get worse the more he used it. So it was expected for him to start strong and then finish weak.

Second, prior to the injury (and prior to him getting weaker as the season went on), you blitzed Schaub at your own risk. He was great against the blitz. But as his wheels started to go, he started reacting really bad to pressure. He started getting wild and inaccurate and making poor decisions. I think it took a while for defensive coordinators to recognize that. But once they did, they went after him and got him to crack.

I expect Schaub to start the season pretty good for the Raiders but I expect him to start to come apart about 4 games in.

That's one thing I will remember the Kubiak years for. The offense and defense just couldn't be in synch when they peaked.

And this will be Albert Haynesworth's legacy: He kept a team's offense from peaking at the right time. That's all that ******* will ever accomplish.
 
Ultimate outcome aside, one of the most exciting halves of football was watching the Schaub led Texans come back from 21 pts, scoring on 5 straight drives against one of the league's top D's including back to back drives of 99 and 95 yds with a 2 pt conversion to boot.

I'm also glad AJ had Schaub to get the ball to him in his head to head against CJ. Not the prettiest game but 188 yds to AJ a week after he had 273 yds (and Schaub was just under 900 yds) was epic.

Since I have been outside of Houston for the life of this franchise I don't have the taint of being overwhelmed by Houston media jackassery every day.

From my perspective he gave the team everything he had. I never saw him as a guy that would lead this team to the promised land, but as a cog in the machine that would eventually get them there. Unfortunately, Fat Albert happened during a season that very well could have ended in at least a trip to the Super Bowl. I think they were rolling and that injury completely knocked them out of contention. They will never get that again from a post injury Schaub.

I appreciate what he did for the team and hate to see it all come off the rails in such a horribly spectacular manner.

You're probably right but I hope that now that it's said and done the Texan fans in general will echo what has been said here. One can hope, anyway.

Schaub tried his best and gave us some great memories in the process. Now that it's done here I sort of feel bad it didn't come out better for his sake (who am I kidding, mine too..lol).

This is where I am also. Schaub won me over before he even got here by reaching out to his new teammates and trying to connect with them right after he was signed.

During the lockout in 2011 Schaub showed himself a leader, IMO, by getting his offensive teammates and even some of the defensive guys to participate in team only workouts thereby keeping the team on what should have been our OTA schedule. That was the 10-6 year, the first playoff berth year, the Suck for Luck year, but also the Fat Albert year when Schaub's fortunes began to change.

I have absolutely no ill will towards Matt Schaub & like several Texans that have moved on... I'll be rooting for him to be very successful. Even more successful than he was here.

Who knows how many games we lost because our coach wanted to put him on ice when he was hot... I understand the "theory" but when your QB is hot, it's time to pour it on.

If I had my rathers, we'd have got rid of Kubiak & Rick... but I'll take Kubiak & Schaub being shown the door, with my fingers crossed that Rick is about to join them.
 
I wish Schaub all the best in his future endeavors. I just hope that in finding another starting rather than a backup role, this venue of putting him in a well-known easy-turn non-forgiving hostile Raider Nation environment for those who do not or cannot perform up to expectations, he is not exposed to that final emotional coup d'etat.

Good luck, Matt.......I, for one will try to only remember the good times.

I wish we could have gotten to the SB with him, but we just weren't quite good enough. I certainly enjoyed being in the playoffs, and that 11-1 start to 2012 was a freaking blast. In the end, he weathered an unfortunate storm with class, imo.

Matt gave us some great years and I thank him for his time here in Houston.

And to get the 165th pick in this deep draft deserves some kudos, front office. :clap:

One of my favorite Schaub moments was his first season when we played the Panthers early in the season. We were down early 14-0 and Captain Mittens was on the opposing sideline celebrating with his team like they'd already won since he was unfamiliar with digging a team out of the hole. We ended up winning 34-21 and Mittens got to see how the offense was supposed to run without a loser at QB.

Wasn't that the game where he went into the huddle down that 14-0 and said "OK, we've got them right where we want them. Let's do this." iirc ?
 
Thanks for the great games you played here in Houston and the happy memories of some great victories, and thanks for being such an outstanding citizen and the many positive things you did for the city of Houston.

Yeah, that was his 2nd game as a Texan. In his first, at Reliant vs. the Chiefs, he saw that the safeties were playing up and called a play that wasn't in the game plan. Deep post to AJ for a TD. 2007, and we were feeling pretty good about our QB, our head coach, and our team. Good times.
 
You are a great guy and a good QB.

Not good enough to sniff a SB but still a good QB.

Thanks Matt for bringing this city and my favorite team it's first taste of success in a long time. I wish it hadn't ended this way for you and coach Kubiak. Best of luck (except against us)
 
Matt had some good years here. I think from early on many of us saw where his limitations were and felt that those were things that a winning game plan could be put together around them. No QB is perfect. I don't hold the shortcomings of 2007-2014 on Matt Schaub. In fact I consider him responsible for many of the successes. I hang the shortcomings mostly on Gary Kubiak who wasted some of the most potentially productive years that Schaub and AJ had together trying to field a team without a defensive coordinator with any ability.

Schaub did everything that was asked of him. I appreciate that he gave the Texans their first real NFL QB. I wish him well unless it's against us.
 
Can't root for him to be successful since he's a Raider, but I have to be grateful for him helping pull us out of the doldrums of the Casserly/Carr era. He got way, way, way too much flack from people who have literally zero idea what they're talking about but it was time for him to go.

7. 2009 at Indy. Overcame 13-0 deficit to take a 17-13 lead. After Indy went back up, Schaub orchestrated a beautiful drive to set up Brown to tie the game. But Brown's downward spiral began here as his kick went wide.

8. 2009 v. New England. Brought Texans back from 2 TD deficit to win the game in the fourth quarter. Last game of the season, and the Texans put themselves in position for the playoffs, but they didn't get the help they needed in the late games.

9. 2010 at Washington. Rallies team from 27-10 for a stirring comeback win.

10. 2010 v. Kansas City. Overcomes a 10 point 4th quarter deficit and tosses game-winning TD with :11 left.

11. 2010 at Jacksonville. Erases 14 point deficit at half and then, after they fell behind again, he brought them back to a tie. Until the Texans pitiful D couldn't stop a Hail Mary.

12. 2010 at NY Jets. Rallies Texans back from 17 down against the Jets at their peak under Rex Ryan. Only to have the defense surrender an 80-yard TD drive with less than a minute to go to Mark Sanchez.

13. 2010 v. Baltimore. Sort of the 2008 Cardinal game redux. Erases a 21 point deficit in a frenzied comeback only to be undone by a pick-6. Still, he played about as well as he's ever played in throwing the Texans back into the ballgame.

14. Yesterday.

All great memories. Too bad his the vast majority of his tenure was marred by team injuries and ****ty defense. And too bad he was the target of dirty play by thugs like Jared Allen and Albert Haynesworth.

Oh what could have been. Oh well. We move on.

This thread is not so much about Matt Schaub as it is about his time as a Texans. If we ever start wax poetically about his glory days in Atlanta, then it's time to move it to the NFL section.
 
A big thank you to Matt for his time here. He had some great years, and some good years, and really bad year with us. He was part of a time that gave us some excitement and hope after HWSNBN, when there wasn't much of each beforehand. I may not forget how it all ended, but I won't forget the good stuff either, especially how great he was in the community at large. I hope he keeps his home here, b/c the work he and his wife did has always been appreciated and I hope it continues.

I wish him well in Oakland. I know I'll be watching, just like I watched the eagles and the ravens to see how our old players are doing. Good luck, Auf Wiedersehen, Sa yo nara, and Vaya con Dios.
 
5 seasons under Carr, the Texans:
- Never had a winning season
- Never ranked higher than 21st in offensive points scored
- Never made the playoffs

Next 6 seasons under Schaub (doesn't include 2013), the Texans:
- Only had ONE losing season
- Made playoffs twice
- Two division championships
- In the top 10 for offensive scoring 4 out of the 6 seasons

Schaub has done so much for this franchise. He has helped taken us out amongst the cellar dwellars of the league and made the Texans significant in the NFL. I'm really hoping he does the same for the Raiders!
