Vince Wilfork wants out of NE

If Houston signed Wilfork I wouldn't have the slightest problem whatsoever. Not - at - all.

Dude would be expensive, though.

According to Ian Rappaport, Wilfork wants out of NE and wants to be released. https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/444176971191169024

If he is released, would he want to come to Htown and if so, would you want him here? He was part of Romeo's D in NE and while he did not play for him, knows Bill o' Brien. If this is a repost, I apologize.

He's coming off an Achilles injury, turns 33 this year, and wants a fat contract, let Denver sign him.

If he's turning down $8M (not including signing bonus cap hit) from NE, he'll be too expensive for Houston.

People still can't get used to the spending cap and the limitations it places on obtaining every good player in FA. They just want everybody.

He isn't turning down anything. They have asked him to reduce his pay this year and he is refusing. He has asked for his release. Odds are he does not receive more than his base this season of $7.5 if he is released.

Right. We don't know what they offered him. My concern is health and age. But if he can play, wow. What a great addition to help play right now and help mentor a younger developing NT.

Base ($7.5M) plus 500K in non signing bonuses makes $8M. I suspect he'll get that or he wouldn't ask for his release, even if NE is asking him to take a cut. But say you're right. How much do you think he could get from Houston? Just remember that we have a lot of holes to fill with the cap space left.

I love Wilfork. Would love to have him on this team, but not at the price he'll demand. I don't see us as a SB contender, so I don't see why we would pay him all of that money.

I don't think the Texans will or should make a run at him, but I think the market price will be something right around the same as an avg. per year instead of a base and on a limited 2-3 year contract - which will be structured such that anything after year 2 is easy to dump.

Didn't we just do something not unlike this?

No. Lets find the next Wilfork, not overpay the old one.

Raji would be ideal, just entering his prime. Probably not the cap space though.

Terrance Cody would be the cheap, poor-man's Wilfork. Maybe Cam Thomas

I too have loved Wilfork, the player and the person. However, an Achilles in a locomotive size NT???? Terrible situation.

He suffered his injury pushing off..........without resistance against opposing O.

Now he will be expected to continue pushing off against double teams. His performance WILL be compromised and the risk for re-reputure is ~5% (probably higher because of his size the position.......ala Philly's LT Jason Peters) and his risk for further compensatory injury is high.

Keep in mind that though Wilfork only missed 6 games in his 10 year career, he was intermittently throughout the seasons on the Patriot Injury Reports for a foot/ankle during EVERY year except for 2007 and 2008. And knowing Belichik, the foot/ankle listings were used ultra sparingly.

Well that's good enough for me.

I'll pass on wilfork.

With the Texans history of blowing calls like his on health in the past .... I'm scared he'd just be Tony Bosseli / Ed Reed v9.0.

Tony Boselli..... Ed Reed...... Vince Wilfork......

Sounds like the beginning of some kind of Personnel "Ring of Dishonor". Maybe shoehorn Ahman Green in there too.

i have absolutely loved wilfork since he came into the league, and he was my second choice in the draft behind trading up for sean taylor. along with mount washington a bit earlier and casey hampton, wilfork's been one of the most dominant nose tackles of this generation. he'd be perfect for what we want to do on defense.

HOWEVER

CND says no, so ... NO. cnd doesnt miss often (if at all), and even i can see where that achilles will become a constant issue.

Was just listening to 610am Sports Radio and they were on the phone with a Boston reporter with the latest that Vince Wilfork supposedly was asked to take a pay cut and he went to his locker, took his name down, grabbed his gear and said "I Quit".

Now before you move this thread....there was talk between the broadcaster that the Texans would love to have him here. The Boston informer was asked questions of his health, his potential desires to work with Bill O'Brian again, and what salary he might seek with the Texans.

Knowing he might have flown off the handle, and the fact that he could still possibly work out a deal with the Patriots; it was said by the Boston informer that this episode looks final.

Wilfork as a Texan? Any comments?

Coming off an Achilles, it would be late in the year before he is the guy we want him to be. We could probably get him cheap though, but it would be a waste of a roster spot as we wait for him to contribute next year.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft compared Vince Wilfork, who has requested to be released, to some of the franchise's greats in expressing his hope that the standout defensive tackle will remain with the team.

Kraft wants him to stay.

IIRC, Wilfork is set to make around $8 million this year and requested his release because he was asked to take a pay cut. Not only do I think we cannot afford him, but he's also 32 and coming off a major injury. As much as I'm a fan of what he's done...no thanks. He's on the downside of his career. This is not the time to be shelling out cash for guys like that.

True

And if what C-N-D says is correct Wilfork has a very real possibility of turning into another Ed Reed situation. Pass

Good points, darn good points. Listening to this radio conversation on the way home from work sure made the drive more invigorating though. I'm going to follow this though, as I could see maybe Denver or Oakland going for him if Vince sticks to his words!

Ed Reed? Ahman Green? I'm tired of acquiring everybody's washed up star player past his prime. Have we not learned our lesson yet?

Any deal would have to be low or heavily incentivized. No more retirement contracts for us.

How about $1M base with a $250,000 bonus for playing more than ten plays in a game? If injured, he receives backup money. If starting, about $5M/yr. No more $5M because you used to be good.

He was injured in week 4.

I think he knows very well he won't get that much on the open market but he is offended they are asking for the cut after he has restructured to aid them in the past.

Wilfork's had a great career in NE, but I wouldn't even consider bringing him in. Let some team with tons of cap space take the tons of risk on this.

If the Texans do this, I'll need some SmO'Brien pink soap. LOL :smooch:

Pay for production... ?

There's some tough precedent-setting in the Wilfork deal from the players' side here.

In 2016, Wilfork a $5M base, $300K weight, $200K workout, $500K in per-game roster bonuses.

Then, Patriots have a $4M roster due Day 1 of the 2015 League Year. $3M base for '15, $500K in per-game bonuses, $300K weight, $200K workout

So Wilfork makes $8M in 2014 if he plays every game, 70% of the snaps, and Pats make the divisional playoffs and rank Top 10 in scoring D.

Wilfork can then make $500K for 70% playtime and Pats being Top 10 in scoring defense.

So that's $5M for Wilfork. Then ... $500K for 50% playtime, $1.25M for 60% PT, $2M for 70% PT, $2.5M for 70%/divisional playoff appearance

...$500K for first game on the 53-man roster, $87.5K per game in roster bonuses for being on the 46-man roster.

Wow, he Vince Wilfork deal is complicated. In 2014: $1.3M to sign, $1.3M base, $300K weight clause, $200K workout bonus...
