Free Agency problem

Amid all of the Reggie Bush talk a number of people believe we should draft Bush and fill our other holes through free agency. Well i am still up in the air about what i want the texans to do in the draft but i would like you guys to think about something. We WILL NOT get any form of an impact player in free agency this offseason and probobly won't for a few years to come. First of all, nobody wants to come to a losing team. Secondly, the city of Houston has never been a big city when it comes to bringing in FA's unless of course they are coming back to their hometown.

Pretty much we must have a stellar draft this offseason in order to make anything of our team. That is where the Reggie Bush debate comes into effect even more. Assuming we get no FA help would you still draft him? I would love to see him but i also am a firm believer of football games being won in the trenches. We need to control the line to win games and frankly we havent done that in 4 years. I am kinda looking at lb/ol before reggie but if we have the #1 pick i don't see how we could pass on him.

I think thats everyones debate at this present moment in time...how can we pass on Bush's talent, but at the same time we need some serious help on our OL. I say replace center and move him back to his natural position and drafting bush wont be so bad....if we cant get a GOOD center in here via free agency then I would look to trading down pick by pick until we get ourselves as many picks as we can and still draft da'brick and aj hawk. I know that isnt likely but with a bargaining chip like bush...anything is possible...right???? If not...then please allow me to dream....please??

I imagine we could get a trade like the ricky williams trade. Maybe even more.

theres no doubt that the bargaining chip with reggie bush at the number one will have a LOT of value...I just hope we get some people in the front office that will know what to do with that power instead of settling and being forced into premature moves.

I would want two first round pics a second round pick and a third round pick at least. Or no deal.

It's going to be nearly impossible to lure good free agents here given the current state of the organization. They were already overpaying for less than average free agents before this disasterous season. Now that the organization is viewed as somewhat of a joke, it will make it even harder for the next management regime. The current management team (McNair not excluded) has set this organization back light years.

Depending on the teams involved....that may be a possibility...especially if a team as stacked up on picks for this years draft from previous years trades....I dont go that thick into midst of it all, but I would love that scenario...it could fill a lot of holes for us with VERY GOOD TALENT.

thats what people said when the vikes didnt get their pick in on time the first time...but look what happened the years that followed....NEVER SAY NEVER.

When the Chargers traded draft rights with NYG for Eli Manning, this was the compensation for the overall #1:

2004 1st round (#4 overall - QB P. Rivers)
2004 3rd round (selected K Nate Kaeding)

2005 1st round (selected OLB Shawne Merriman)
2005 5th round (traded to Tampa Bay for left tackle Roman Oben)

Reggie White left a competitive Eagles team to play for a loser Packers team....and it started a revolution for that organization.

Talented players want to go to teams that stink so that THEY can get credited for the turn-around when it happens. Plus, stinky teams pay great money for great talent when they've been scorched like we have this year.

To me, there are three "no miss" draft picks: Bush, Brick, and Hawk.

If we get any of those, I'll be happy. We could do a Rivers-Eli swap with any team that drafts Brick or Hawk, etc., and get our guy FOR SURE while also scoring some additional picks like San Diego did to get Merriman, etc.

Not a bad idea when you think about it. Bush is great, but he's even better when a team at No. 5 or 6 or 7 wants him bad enough to give us the farm for him. That;s the kind of wheeling and dealing that Uncle Casserly needs to do.

If thats the kind of wheeling and dealing your looking for I'd start praying that casserly isnt in the draft war room....or your going to get the exact opposite and we may end of giving up some picks to someone just to pick Bush at the 1 spot eventhough it may be rightfully ours.

I disagree. Houston is a great city to live in, it is one of the bigger markets in the U.S., we have one of if not the best facilities in the NFL, we have a team with some young talent that will be bringing in a new coaching staff to build the team, we have a pretty good owner that has shown he is willing to shell out some money for free agents. I think as long as people see that the organization is making some steps in the right direction that people would love to come here.

I agree with your view on free agents coming here, but I disagree with your draft stuff. I don't consider anyone in this year's draft to be a "can't miss" pick, Bush is the closest thing to it but I don't think we should draft him. Ferguson isn't even rated by many people (myself included) as the best OL in the draft, and Hawk is a very good LB but is far from a "can't miss" prospect.

The problem with drafting Bush and then trading his rights to a team for the rights to someone like Ferguson or Winston is that since we essentially are getting them with the #1 overall pick they will likely expect to be paid #1 salary rather than whatever pick they are actually drafted at. Rivers held out on the Chargers because he expected to get a #1 overall-type contract since the Chargers had the #1 pick and got him with it via trade. They eventually settled on a lesser contract but it was still more than he should have gotten with the #4 pick and it took a decent holdout that cost him the starting job and allowed Brees to make his comeback. If we did something like that, it could ensure that we get the guy we want but at the same time they will likely want a bigger contract than if we traded the picks before the draft and just picked our guy with our new pick.

The Royals were one of the worst teams last year, if not the worst, and yet, they still drew in free agents. The thinking is, if a good player goes to a bad team, he will get a starting spot and wads of cash. Just throwing a name out there: Julian Peterson.
