Hope this is the right forum as I am a newbie here. Heard on the radio that the NFL is considering a 15 yard penalty for use of the N word. Will that apply to all that use it? What about the use of the M word as in Mother or the F word as in others? Just curious as to what you think. Will we ever draw a line? Michael Sam seemed pretty thick skinned to me in his interview..

I never even thought of using the N word but I sure used a lot of other words when I played football. If I played today they'd suspend me just as soon as look at me for my filthy mouth.

Slurs of any kind should already be covered under the rules for unsportsmanlike conduct, which is 15 yards if I'm not mistaken.

The problem is that it's not white people calling black players the n word, it's black players calling each other that. It's highly common and not used to offend each other and it's not racially charged at all. This is a stupid idea.

I think people are getting bent for no reason. It is not ordinary in the great majority of business contexts to run off at the mouth with racial epithets. Even vulgarity is frowned upon or prohibited. Seems like a giant walk on by, nothing to see to me.

This might be something more appropriate for NSZ, but I saw a commentator on ESPN discussing this. She said that you have to question the motives of the people implementing this policy; that if saying this word is a double standard, why do the people banning the word want to say it?

Which means you have given in to the slide of the culture. Vulgarity does not have to be the way of life it has become. It is certainly unsportsmanlike, so I agree with the previous poster. Just tell the officials to start calling it, notify the teams to be aware of this change and implement it.

Anyone who thinks vulgarity in sports is a recent event is living under a rock. Hell, coaches use vulgarity in high school football incredibly often, don't know how we're going to ask grown men to watch their language in a very intense and competitive environment. Guess the coaches can wash their mouths out with soap after each n bomb.

Is Rooney some pansy who doesn't know football? He's already instituted a prohibition throughout the work environment for his players.
Personally, I cuss like a sailor (not the racial epithets part) but I have always been aware it is not appropriate in certain contexts and at work was subject to my bosses' restrictions.

Agreed. While I think it is almost a non-issue because it is regular in business, it is also unnecessary and not an indication of a slide in culture. That is just laughable since we are talking about changing a long standing practice. Kind of the diametric opposite of slide.

Personally I see a difference between a workplace that is a mix of men and women in a business office vs. alpha males playing a sport that rewards barbaric behavior.

I don't have a problem with whatever rules the NFL company wants to make for their workplace, but it doesn't need to spill over to the field. If you want to fine a guy for dropping whatever bomb, fine, but slapping a 15 yard penalty on a team which effects the game is crap.

I was talking to Marshall who acts like it's just this generation of people who cuss. I usually keep him on ignore but I just had to look at his post.
No doubt. We go from Deacon Jones openly admitting to loving the NFL because it's the first time that he could legally hit a white man with all his might and not get arrested to 15 yard penalty for potty mouth.
I figure the trenches of the NFL are somewhat akin to foxholes. This is not a 'normal' work environment and certainly far removed from more socially defined places like offices, schools, doctors offices, etc.
I deal with a lot of salty people in my business. Guys straight from the oil patch, off of vessels that have been at sea for weeks, truck drivers, etc. If I was to get upset every time someone dropped a cuss word, I'd be walking around offended and butt-hurt all day.

Agreed. I have worked with many of the same as witnesses defending their companies. I get along with them much better than my brethren because of my being salty as well. I have also gotten some good laughs from "accidentally" dropping words in courtrooms a few times (works better in Texas than with the damn yankees). Context is everything.

Methinks you've touched on the root cause. The NFL is covering themselves for possible future faux pas's. Boom mics are everywhere. AnD when they mic-up players they're probably tired of bleeping every other sentence because someone nearby is having a hissy.
And one of their biggest potential markets (maybe current markets) are kids. The NFL is trying to polish up its image to those kids and their parents.
I have been to many little league football games in the past couple of years, and young players are getting their trash talking skills from their parents and coaches, not necessarily from professional athletes.
Some of the meekest and mildest natured kids flip a switch on the field. Something about a very physical and violent game like football tends to bring it out of people, even kids.
I wonder if that new image will encourage the kids to clean up their acts in the school hallways.

I can definitely agree with that. I would never sit in the stands where the rest of the parents were watching the game. I was always off to the side because I never wanted to have to confront one of these boneheads. My son and I are best friends, but I never lived my life through him, nor did I force him to live mine.

If I played for Dallas, Philly or NYG, I'd start using that word constantly. Can you imagine how awesome it would be for a player of a rival team to be the reason Washington has to change their name? That would be legendary, and it would piss off Dan Snyder.

Maybe they can do the rule on a sliding scale, if a white guy drops the N-bomb his team gets 15 yards, but if a black guy says it his team only gets a 9 yard penalty. I think we can work with this.
