2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

Blake

MMQB
This is NOT a sign up for the mock draft. Just a thread to start discussing when we want to do it, and to give everyone a heads up well in advance so when the time comes to sign up they aren't left out because they didnt see the signup.

The NFL Combine is February 22-25 and the NFL Draft is May 8th. I suggest waiting until after the combine to do our draft. I think it goes without saying, but if you choose to participate you should know more than just round 1 prospects, and be available everyday to update your "big board" or make a selection. If we want to take the slow, let everyone have a day to pick approach, then we would need to start in February before the combine.

What are everyone's thoughts/concerns?

I see no point in doing anything before the combine. And I agree about knowing prospects further down the board. It never fails that the further we get into it people just stop showing up and it turns into group selections.

How do yall decide who gets what teams?
Generally its first come first served. But you need to be a regular around here. Someone we can count on being available/reliable to do the work (research) and make picks. I do not think we have 32 posters who fit the mold so most everyone who is a draft fan gets a team.

We need to wait until after the combine is completed. You will know which pick the Cowboys have, you will know compensatory picks, and you will have accurate measurements for all the players. There's still a lot of debate about the QB's size, weight, hand size, etc... That could shake up a lot of people's picks.

The NFL Combine will be April 12-13.
The NFL Draft will be May 8-10.

That gives us nearly a month to get through this before we run into the actual draft. I think that is plenty of time.

The NFL Combine is February 22-25 and the NFL Draft is May 8th. (Is anyone else loving the fact that the draft is so early?) I suggest waiting until after the combine to do our draft which gives us 10 days to complete our "speed" mock. I think it goes without saying, but if you choose to participate you should know more than just round 1 prospects, and be available everyday to update your "big board" or make a selection. If we want to take the slow, let everyone have a day to pick approach, then we would need to start in February before the combine.

My suggestion would by for 16 responsible people to take 2 teams each. This eliminates the stragglers that sign up and draft for 1 round then quit. Last yrs mock draft went really smoothly. (Thanks Blake/Dutch/76 for helping make this happen.) So members that participated last yr get 1st shot at signing up this yr.

I dont think it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and sign up our teams. For example, I have been keeping up with the Bears and Cardinals vaguely.

I find that after the 1st week or two of FA is over is the best time to start the draft. I moderated last yrs draft with a lot of help from others. If somebody else wants to moderate this yrs draft that would be fine with me. I'm more than willing to help out any way that I can.

I want to thank all of the members that help make the TT mock draft the best one that I've participated in. The mock draft helps me learn about other teams need and how various members value players. Thanks for helping me sharpen my draft knowledge, so I have an idea where players should be slotted in the real NFL draft.

I think that after the combine would nice. I also agree that it might be easier to have 16 people with two teams, but I don't want to exclude anyone either.

Is FA after the draft?

I like your time frame. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to finish a mock draft.

Free Agency starts March 11, 2014. We will have a month of free agent movement before the combine is complete, which is plenty of time for things to shake out.

I think Monday April 14th is the ideal start date.

Oh, and I'll be happy to do the Google Draft Spreadsheet again. Last year's was fun :)

So its decided. We will start after the combine. March 3rd?

Lets start "sign ups" on Monday, the 27th. You throw your name in the hat. A team with a first round pick will be assigned to you.

WAS and IND do not have a first round pick. We can make those teams group picks unless someone REALLY REALLY wants to be their GM.

I'd prefer to have a first round pick, but I feel confident in the lower rounds of this draft so I'd volunteer to take either team, or both, if nobody else was interested.

Are you willing to take on the lead moderator role? What do you think about the 2 team 16 person format.

If your OK with that Give me the Bears and Cards if I miss signup day.

I will help moderate the mock. Last year was a nice team effort. I think some people might be left out if we do 16. But will leave that decision up to the consensus.

Correct. The real NFL Combine is Feb 22-25.
Oh OK, I see now. Well I would suggest waiting until a week after free agency starts. Free Agency begins Tuesday March 11, 2014. The Monday after that is March 17th, which could work, or that Tuesday if you want to give it a full week.

I believe last year we started a week after free agency, and I think that helped a lot of folks. You don't want to have your draft ruined because your team picks up a big time free agent at a position of need.

I think this is a good idea and 2nd it.

I also think you should just let everyone sign up and then there will likely be many people that have to do 2 teams, just have people sign up for the 2 teams as needed.

Also, do yall do a "lock your mock" thing here? Where everyone posts their mock they believe/hope the Texans will do and we all see who is the most accurate? It would be cool to do one of those with a scoring system, deadline for submission, and possible gambling?

It has varied in the past. I know people have other favorite teams that they want, but the Texans pick is usually the most controversial. In the past we have done it where the Texans pick is a vote among 5-10 players, but the last couple we have just assigned someone the team randomly.

I'm thinking this year we could do something different, and I'll be happy to manage it if the other Mock Admins are in favor of it. I'll create a new Google spreadsheet for the 2014 mock, and everyone will be able to sign up. However, instead of just signing your name next to a team or throwing it in a random bucket, you pick 3 teams that you want to draft for all 7 rounds. Rank them as 1,2,3 in the order the columns set up, and I'll do my best to ensure that everyone gets at least 1 of their top 3 teams.

For the Texans, since I'm sure many folks will want them, I'll take everyone who lists them and randomly select one. If there are any other teams with an inordinate amount of people picking them, then we may do the same, but the Texans will be the first selected.

If there are folks that don't get a top 3 team for some reason, I'll fill in as many of the teams as possible, and then allow anyone who doesn't have a team yet to choose among the remaining teams.

Also, do yall do a "lock your mock" thing here? Where everyone posts their mock they believe/hope the Texans will do and we all see who is the most accurate? It would be cool to do one of those with a scoring system, deadline for submission, and possible gambling?
I think we have always had threads like that pop up each year around draft time, but nothing really formal. For the purposes of this mock draft, we don't do that particular thing, but you're welcome to start a thread and manage that if you like :)

Didn't bah007 run the Texans draft last year and he picked Keenan Allen 1st round and everyone hated it? Oops...

Blake, Steelb, 76Texan (if you want to help this year), if you guys want to pursue the sign-up idea I had, I created the 2014 spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AscQRwKjB5B9dEtMeHkzSHRpZ3NKUURPTTRMaEc5SGc#gid=15

I think it might work. If not, we can always do a random generator. If we start signups now, we can let people get an early start on studying.
Sense that's been said I'll just jump out and say it then. I'd like to have SF again. I had them last year and they're one of my favorite teams after the Texans.

I sat out last year but would want back in this year.

Start things after the combine and after Free Agency has been going for a bit.

I would rather one team each than two if there are the numbers interested.

Also would rather teams without first rounders still get personal GMs if possible.

If we are picking teams, I would like Gang Green.

I'm thinking that we could add a tie-breaker component to picking the teams as well, like a combination of Join Date on the TT board and post count. That would be a gauge of seniority on the board and active participation over the years. It would only be used for teams with multiple people picking the same team #1, but it would make the selection a bit more fair. I'd rather just give people teams that they like, but I think with 32 people involved, that makes it a bit difficult. We shall see how the list shakes out and I'll discuss it with the other draft admins.

Thanks for helping me sharpen my draft knowledge, so I have an idea where players should be slotted in the real NFL draft.
There needs to be a couple of people who will make the choices for those with emergencies or other excuses for not making their pick in a timely manner. There are always one or two who can't get their act together for some reason or other.

Yes, but not until they are announced by the NFL during the combine. The Baltimore and Dallas coin flip for draft position will also be determined then.

We only had a few GMs with multiple teams, so I don't see why we would need to do only 16 GMs this year. Let's just get the folks who wanna join signed up, and then we'll figure out who gets what teams. There are only a couple teams with very few picks.

Ah, Football!
Comp picks weren't announced until mid to late March the past couple of seasons. This year the draft is pushed into May, so it might be even later before announced this year. Just an FYI

I think you should do something that Divides Rep Points by Number of posts.

Anyone can say dumb stuff for years, not anyone can say quality things in a limited amount of time though.

If yall decide to do seniority or number of posts though that is 100% fair too and I'd be fine with it.

That's not actually how it works, but that is a discussion for a different time and forum.
