2006 NFL Draft Stradegy For The Houston Texans

Practice Squad
Do not pick a running back...ever.....in the first round. Good running backs are products of good offensive lines. The Texans can run block alittle, you can't pass block. You need to start building your team from the lines out. You need offensive linemen that can block in pass pro & open up running plays. Here's what you guys have gotta do if you want to escape losing. You can get 1000 yard rushers in the 3rd round or later if you have an offensive line.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, T, Virginia - The selection of D'Brickashaw Ferguson would put an end to their problems up front once and for all and finally give the team the elite left tackle they, and Carr, have been dreaming of. A tremendous athlete for his size, Ferguson has everything you look for from the position and his name deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as recent prospects such as Levi Jones.

Derek Hagan, WR, Arizona State. Hagan isn't the flashiest player out there and this might be a bit of a reach, but he is going to be a very solid possession receiver at the next level and his selection would ensure that David Carr has plenty of options to work with.

Winston Justice, OT, USC - He'll probably still be there at the top of the 3rd round. He's been playing in a Pro Style offense & can pass protect in pass pro. Again, you guys need to address your offensive line before you do anything else.

In summation: The Texans would be fools to draft Reggie Bush. You should pray that Texans management dont draft him. You have a running back, you have a QB, you have a #1 receiver. You need some pass protection & another wideout that can take some heat of off your #1 receiver.

I know where you are coming from. The Bengals started turning the corner when they got a blind side tackle in the 2002 draft. We were bad that year, but Levi Jones has become a Pro Bowl LT. David Carr needs a Left Tackle & another Receiver before he needs another running back.

Take my word for it. Reggie Bush isn't overrated, however he's not going to be running through holes as big as a Hummer in the Pro's like he did at USC. If you draft him, you'll regret it. If you can keep Carr standing in the pocket for another second, you'll make a quantum leap.

I Promise.

Good luck my friends.

Ferguson won't solve all of our problems. He is quite athletic for an OT but he is pretty small for one too, and he doesn't run block very well. While Ferguson may be the best pass blocker available, Eric Winston from Miami is much bigger, just about as athletic, and is a better run blocker and a more complete OL, so I'd prefer to get him. I am a firm believer that we need to draft two OL this draft that will be good enough to start for us right away, so I'd look for McNeil, Joseph, or Thomas at the top of the 2nd round. If Gaffney stays I'm not a big fan of picking up another WR. I think he and Armstrong are good possession receivers and Mathis has amazing speed so if we bring in a coaching system that will utilize our current weapons properly I think we will be much better. There will also be some good WRs in free agency that we can look to (Reggie Wayne will probably be pretty expensive so I'm not sure about him, but there are others). I'd prefer to look for defensive help, especially in the secondary, before going for another WR, unless a pretty good one somehow falls to us in the third round.

Im kinda stuck on the fence as far as Bush or trade down .... But I do think that just having Bush in the back-field and a THREAT to take it to the house on any given play would make the Texans O-line better .... Most teams would be less likely to blitz as much .... Cant put 8 or 9 in the box because once a player with that type of speed and elusiveness gets past the line .... Its 6 or at the very least a huge gain .

Im NOT saying that there wouldnt be circumstances where teams wouldnt blitz .... Only that they would be less likely to send as much pressure as they currently do .

We already have that guy. His name is Chester Pitts.

if the Texans have a chance to draft Bush (don't) & fail to get a big compensation package from another team who wants Bush that would set me off over the edge :hairpull:

I agree with MorKnolle about Winston over Ferguson from a versatility viewpoint & getting another guard/tackle with the 2nd rd pick. As discouraging of performance this current line has evoked they have been improving as of late, thanks to no longer playing out of position for one reason. Another is Brown & Weary are decent guards in the running game, Mckinney is a weak link at Center but he only has one more year on his contract and Hodgdon should be back to full strength next year. Also a decision has to made concerning Todd Wade the 7th highest paid Texan & Zach Weigrert (Weregret) the 6th most paid Texan, who is also nearing the end of his illustrious NFL carreer. So by going #1 & #2 with offensive linemen we continue the huge investment in protecting Mr. Franchise but hopefully with better returns and a better winning future.:tv:

Im not saying he is to small. He is my third favorite player in this draft behind AJ Hawk and Reggie Bush.

What about picking Charels Rogers in FA? Immensley talanted WR who could work as a # with AJ. He has had injury probelms, but he would be very cheap...

Not a big Charles Rogers fan unless we sign and maybe trade him for a Brandon Lloyd or Bryant Johnson. I think Gaffney is a good #2 receiver, he just has not had the opportunity to show it. think about it when he was the main option he put numbers. Gaffney is a faster T.J. Housh and in a good system that exploits defenses we would see that. I am hoping we sign Gaff back a good price.

Im not worried about the WR position very much with AJ, JG, and Jerome Mathis. we definetly have bigger problems. But then again we need all the help we can get so whatever.

I want a LT with the first round pick.

I want a Defender with the round 2 pick.

I want a TE, and G, with the third round picks.

Round 1: D'Brickashaw Ferguson LT

Round 2: Darnell Bing S.

Round 3: Charles Spencer OG.
Round 3: Dominique Byrd TE.

Our defense needs help, but we need to spend this draft on offense. Right now, we can't even tell how good Carr is because we have nothing but AJ for him to work with.
Also this is a big man draft. There are 5 OTs that will go in the 1st that could be cornerstones. There will be OL, especially OTs, that we can pick in the 3rd round that would normally be high 2nd round picks.

I would like to tailor our draft to this draft's strength and put some talent on our OL and DL.

If we get the 1st pick:
1- Bush
This guy is too good to pass up.
(Then I would trade DDavis to Ariz for WR BJohnson (and try to get a low pick), the one they draft in the 1st round in the same draft as Boldin - AZ needs the RB and can spare their 3rd WR)
2- Add picks and players to move up and get one of the OTs that will go in the top 25 picks: 5 stud OTs to go in the 1st round - D'Brickashaw Ferguson 6-5, 296 Virginia, Marcus McNeill 6-8, 322 Auburn, Eric Winston 6-6, 310 Miami, Jonathan Scott 6-7, 310 Texas, Ryan O'Callaghan 6-7, 365 California).
3 - If not dealt to move up: Best ranked OL - maybe Lentz from Michigan
3 - Highest ranked DL/OL: maybe Lutui (a 370 lb OG) or Stanley (320 lb DT)
4 - DT/LB - take the best that falls (Dvoracek, DT Oklahoma?)

If we get the 2nd pick, deal it (Leinert) and move down to pick 3-5:
So,
1 - Pick 3-5: D'Brickshaw
While there are some tempting defensive players (and Hawk is verrryy tempting), we NEED an OT that can play. I know Pitts has done well lately, against bad teams - but we would be better off with a stud at LOT and Pitts can replace Wade or play OG.
2 - I would like a stud WR or TE (or at least a good one because we need one to make plays when AJ is doubled) BUT as of now, it looks like this is a big man draft and no good value at WR for that area. So, TE, Mercedes Lewis if he is there (or TE Vernon Davis or DT Ngata).
3 - Best ranked OL - maybe Lentz from Michigan
3 - Highest ranked DL/OL: maybe Lutui (a 370 lb OG) or Stanley (320 lb DT)
4 - DT/LB - Take the best that falls (Dvoracek DT Oklahoma)

Freeny and the Colts are a bad team ? .... Reggie Hayward and the Jags a bad team ? .... Pitts has performed well since moving back to the tackle position .

If this team has a weakness on the O-line (AND IT DOES) its in the middle starting w/ Steve McKinney ....Mildord Brown and Fred Weary are back-ups on just about any other team in the NFL .
Pitts and the LT position are the least of this teams worries . Its the INTERIOR linemen that are below par talent .

I know it didnt last long ...and many of you probably missed it if you blinked but when McKinney was move to Guard and Drew Hodgdon started at center this line looked a LOT BETTER .

Those of you who are Insisting on this team taking a LT are selling the team short . They have holes are far too many places to lock themselves into one position be it RB or LT .:twocents:

if Pitts isnt playing LT he needs to be playing RT. He is a better tackle than a guard. Keep him at his natural position.

I have nothing against Dbrick but I personally dont think his talent is THAT MUCH better than some of the other 1st round quality OTs.

Personally id like to see us taking Hlatoi Ngata after we trade down to the middle of the first and get another 2nd rounder. (since i know Bush is gonna be gone)

Then I would like to see us take an OT with our first 2nd rounder... and a CB with our second 2nd rounder.

in the third.. either a guard, or a center, or a TE. Same for the 4th and 5th.

6th and 7th rounder id like to see us spend on the best Olinemen still available.

I have only seen Dbrick twice this year. After the first time I thought he would be a good value in the 3-6 range. I think that is more around 5-8 range as I do question his run blocking skills and worried about him getting man handled twice a year by Freeney like he did against Tapp of VA Tech.

I saw Winston only once this year and it was early and was concerned about his progress from the injury. The guy was an absolute no brainer before the injury. I do want to watch him in the bowl game and if he is close to where he was before the injury this should be the guy we take.

I will not be disappointed in either of these guys if we select them.

Gaffney. Sign him, keep him.

If we pick anywhere in the 4-9 range, then I think we have three options. D'Brick, A.J. Hawk, and Jimmy Williams. With the first pick, I personally would like to see us pick a defensive stud like Hawk or Williams. We could play Hawk in the middle. He would be core of this defense and an explosive linebacker that we have been missing. Jimmy Williams could play alongside Duante and we would have 2 shut down corners that could be left on an island for years to come--remember we play the Colts twice a year.

With the second, we could easily take a OT here. I think there is enough OT talent in this draft to wait this long. I think Justice from USC would still be availble along with O'Callaghan and Colledge. Keep Pitts at Tackle and let the rookie play the other side, right or left.

With the 3rd rounder, a TE like Bryd or a defender. A name to watch: Chris Gocong from Cal Poly. He was the NCAA sack leader with 22.5 and can easily stand up and play OLB. Another name: Barrik Nealy from Texas State. I love this kid, he is a home grown product and an athelte. I think he can play QB in the NFL, but we just can use him as an all aroud jack of all trades kind of guy.

I like your thinking on the draft here.

I also wouldn't mind packaging a 2nd and one third and moving up into the first and grabbing the best interior O lineman. Who ever that is.

That would give us the Best LT and Best Interior G/C in the draft and help to solidify our offensive line for years to come. I know no one here wants to spend a high pick on a guard or center, but I think back to the Oilier days of Mike Munchuck (sp) and Bruce Matthews. Also, with young drafted talent on the Oline it will not cost us that much in terms of salary for a few years with the rookie contracts compared to pay free agents.

Have you seen what Freeney does to BIG Tackles
Yes I have, I've seen him get around many bigger, slower LT, but at the same time I've seen him push right through many of them too. I have also seen a few shut him down (Pitts did in two games against him, Orlando Pace dominated Freeney in their game). I have heard that Ferguson had dropped back down to 275 lbs. earlier this season, and I don't want someone that light playing LT for us, we might as well put Mark Bruener there. If he is going to end up weighing that little then Freeney won't even have to go around him he'll just push straight thru him. Winston is very athletic like Ferguson and weighs 20-40 lbs. more depending on Ferguson's diet each week.

And if recent Pro Bowl teams are any indication, teams looking for a quality OT in the near future shouldn't wait much past the first round to grab one. This year, for example, all 6 Pro Bowl OTs were first round selections, a trend that has persisted in recent years. On the other hand, OG and C look more like the lunch-bucket type positions they are with just 3 Pro Bowlers coming to the league as first-round picks. As well, two of this year's 6 undrafted free agents were OG Brian Waters of Kansas City and C Jeff Saturday of Indianapolis.

Mork I agree with you. I think you are not saying that Ferguson is not good, because we know he is, we are just saying pre-injury Winston was better, and now that he has come back from the injury he is on the same level as Ferguson. Winston also has something Ferguson does not, a freakish defensive lineman like mean streak.

Xman

Well, if we mess up and beat SanFran, then we could always move down a few spots and take the best OT left out of Ferguson/Winston. Or, we could deal down even further and take Scott or McNeil. Even though they are not mentioned as much, they will both be more than solid LTs.
I am not so sure about the other OT projected in the lower part of the 1st round, Ryan O'Callaghan 6-7, 365 California and Winston Justice 6-6, 300 Southern California a junior projected to at the top of the 2nd. But, if we don't get one of the top 4, then I reallllly hope we get one of those 2.

This draft is so strong on linemen that we should be able to boost it from a weakness to a strength - just spend the picks (and deal with the D next year). But, if we can somehow get one of those top 4 OTs (Ferg/Scott/Winston/McNeil) AND Hawk - that would be sweet also.

He Grid,

The best Lineman still available in the 6th or 7th round is Mark Kracium from Miami of Ohio. His profile is on robscouting.com. He is 6-5 295, played left tackle for three years and blocked for Big Ben. Check him out on muredhawks.com he was a second team all mac this year.

Im not sold on Bush, but I wont say he wont be what people think he could be. I just know we are not 1 position away and trading the pick gives us the option to take a good OT, a good OG and hopefully a decent Safety and find luck with a Linebacker later on.

Bush will be a great NFL player, so good he would transform the Texans overnight into a winner, but with a major downside. That is, many needs yet to be upgraded will not therefor the Texans foundation will be weaker over the long run because the Texans drafted Bush.

Look whats happened in four years, back to where it all started. Why? Because the foundation was never built for longeivity, Casserly tried to win too soon, with higher paid past their prime building blocks and then failed to restock the shelves.

I'm new to this board, I'm a diehard Texans fan and a misplaced Texan in the mid-west now, so I don't get to watch many games. I also have been reading alot of post, And the problem is basic with the team. The QB is on his back or running away from the other teams D more than any other QB in the NFL. Other teams D's know this and key on it. Some of you want to replace Carr ( big mistake, Carr's a good QB ) or get Bush, BUT FriendlyAdvice is right, You can change the names of the players in your aruments, but the #1 concerne is an o-line that can keep pressure off the QB - who ever he is. And that is going to include staff as well as players.
