David Carr turned down two teams to stay with family

Mr. White

Retired OLine Coach
Posting some of the highlights before the obligatory asshat post comes in from not having read the article.

Most players, given a taste of the NFL, will drop everything for another chance.

But former No. 1 overall pick David Carr turned down a pair of chances to sign in recent weeks, after his 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, and he chose to stay home with his wife to help care for her.....

“We’ll see what happens later. But for the time being, there are things that are more important.”

One of their five sons has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, so they have experience dealing with the condition. But since his daughter Grace is 2, the management requires more constant attention, so Carr skipped a pair of chance to collect a big payday, and perhaps play, to be a dad........

“The thing with diabetes is it’s constant, like every hour it’s something. ‘What did she eat for lunch?’ She’s 2, she can’t tell us, so we have to figure it out. While I was trying to make that decision for those couple of days, she was always there, always in need, always running up and giving me a hug. She didn’t know anything else, she just knew her dad was here. That stuff makes the decision easier.”

And on a week where families will gather to give thanks, the Carrs will be together thanks to dad’s decision to put them first.
One thing about Carr and his family: he talks the talk and he walks the walk. Hoping for the best for him.

Good for him, but let's not pretend he turned down multi year mega offers. 6 weeks of emergency back up role isn't worth the peace of mind of being at home for that...especially when he already has millions in the account.

not to be a jerk or anything, but how does a 2 year old get diabetes?
Genetics. Possibly a virus. Possibly exposure to certain foods.

But mostly genetics.

Remember, this is Type 1 Diabetes not Type 2 Diabetes (which is more of an obesity/lifestyle+genetics thing.)

David Carr was always a classy guy that I admired and respected. He was great for the community and the city of Houston was lucky to have him for what he did off the field. It's just a shame his career turned out to be a bust, but at least he won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants as Eli Manning's backup.

Yeah

And he shouldn't have stolen your lunch money.

Why is that?
Several former teammates on the Texans said he was only a 9-5 guy. Rarely stayed late to study film. I know I heard Chester Pitts say something to that effect, but there were others but I can't recall exactly who. I believe Carr is a decent man and family man, but it seems he didn't put in the extra work to try to become a better player. Of course it didn't help that the OL was terrible and the coaching staff was even worse than the current regime so it may not have made any diffrence and maybe he knew it wouldn't matter.

The Oline was not nearly as terrible as people make out. The change from the very mobile Carr to the sloth Schaub had the team go from 43 sacks to 22. Only RT changed going from Wiegert to Winston.

Carr just across the board was not real committed to football and was aloof from the team. He rarely organized extra work or meetings with the WRs. He didn't socialize with his OL. He didn't stay at the facility and study tape with the coaches, WRs and QBs.

This

But it's debateable that the current coaching staff is better than the old coaching staff. 3 DC's in 8 yrs and Coach Joe still has a job.

Good for David. Someone calculated his NFL earnings (without endorsements), and it was well over $60 million. He seems like a smart dude, so his family should be set for life.

As far as his time here, it was so long ago that I do not see the point of holding on to bitter feelings. He was never going to be elite due to his skills and work ethic, and whatever potential he had was probably beat out of him the first couple of seasons. It never helped that he did not have a QB coach when he entered the league.

The no. 8 just needs to be taboo with the Texans now. Cursed or whatever, just stay away from it. NFL Sack records and pick six records have tainted it. :voodoo:

Not really debatable. Capers developed neither a good O or D. The D at 15 for one season was the only unit he ever had in the top half of the league. Marciano was here the whole time and Capers hired an out of coaching bed and breakfast owner as OC.

Was that joe pendry? If so that guy was horrible. His super simplistic gameplan was brutal.

Good for him. That's what he should be doing, particularly at this point in his career.

David Carr said:
It’s amazing what 12 years in the NFL can do to you,” Carr said. “You see a lot of things, you learn a lot, you grow as a father and husband and you learn some things are more important than going out and collecting a check, standing there and trying to be 100 percent into the deal.
I mean, in 12 years it's not like he ever grew as a QB. No sense in wasting anymore time on that little lark right?

I also got the impression that the Fresno bunch wasn't very worldly . It was like they grew up in a commune with only their family .

He always prioritized family. Any sane, normal, upstanding, moral person should encourage that from its members of society. But we football fans want our players and coaches to all but completely neglect their families for most of the year (and I did say we lol). It's a paradox, but hey, it is what it is.

Anyway, good for him.

Thats my concern if we draft Derek because like his brother he is already married with a kid, and I believe I heard the baby was in the hospital with some complications last summer.

Yep,

This is why I dont want the Texans drafting Derek Carr.

Is my thought process wrong?

BTW, Dont the Mannings have a strong family unit? The Matthews?

The family thing is just an excuse for David's lack of work ethic. My dad used to work 14 or more hrs a day and we had a strong family unit. David wouldn't work that hard even watching film at home. IMHO

How often did you get to see your dad and how long were you able to spend time with him given he worked 14+ hours a day?

I don't know, is it really too much to ask someone making $8M+ a year to put in 80-hour work weeks half of the year for 10 years of their life? I don't think so and I'd be more than happy to sign up for that kind of job.

Well from the viewpoint of normal folks who put in 40+ hours a week for 30-90k of course not. The reality is though that 80 hour weeks suck and only a small portion of the population puts those kind of hours in and their work year certainly is longer than 6 months although Id imagine on reduced hours. Eriadoc makes a good point and a lot of these folks spend minimal time with their family during the season

Kids grow up fast. I'd be there too so I think he's doing the right thing in lieu of all the money he has made. It's not like he's a working stiff and has to work or suffer financial hardship. David is sacking his career for a good and worthy cause. I wish his babies good luck fighting this awful disease.

The Texans aren't drafting Derek Carr. That's a brand name McNair knows he can't sell in Houston.

David Carr made millions, went unscathed the last 5 or 6 years, and has a Super Bowl ring. Why wouldn't he leave the game to take care of his family? Kind of a no-brainer. I expect his brother to become a better QB, when all is said and done.

I can only speculate on these guys' relationship with their families, but I am not sure that any of the true superstar and grinders of sports are truly well balanced individuals in terms of work, life friend priority.

I agree with the exception that a QB is like an executive putting in long hours for big money . These guys are type A personalities , it's just as important as arm strength . Carr is a nice amiable guy and now he's where he should be .

The other side of the coin is Phillip Rivers who has seven kids . Rivers is ultra competitive and can't help but grind .

Two different scenarios - now and the beginning of his career. Now makes perfect sense to prioritize family. He's been paid $60 mil+ in his career. A mil means virtually nothing and his kid has extra needs over the ordinary. Good for him on this one.

But the start of his career was different. NFL careers are short. 95%+ are done by the time a player is 35. Just because God said it was ok to start using his pecker didn't mean he had to instantly start procreating like a rabbit. He could have easily fulfilled both by waiting a while on kids. People do it all the time.

It's a scary thought that Rivers procreated at all. The fact that he procreated this much is terrifying.

This means that there will be a lot of wedgies and swirlies to go around in their school district. If my kids were growing up with his kids, I'd move.

Not as much as he are I would've liked.

But he understood work ethic and we have a close bond.

Why didn't David just show up for the games and not even practice more than he absolutely had too or watch film in his spare time? He should've spent that time with his family and forfited his paychecks.

When you sign up for certain jobs you know they are not 9-5 jobs and QB of an NFL team is one of those jobs. If you aren't willing to put in the time, you should seek out that 9-5 job so that you can spend more time with your family. If that's what's most important to you. David split it down the middle and ruined the Texans original foundation building process.

So no, to Derek Carr.

Yeah.... some of us have to work for a living.

He didn't have to enter the draft. It's no secret what kind of work a starting QB has to put in to be successful. If he wasn't ready to commit (Jamarcus Russell) he should have said as much.

Granted, Casserly should have been able to discern it & the Texans shouldn't have came to terms with it much sooner than they did.

Nothing against Carr.... but don't make us out to be morally deprived heathens. Many of us work 14 & 16 hours a day for our families & it's the most respectable & honorable thing we believe we can do.

David's family may be "okay" but I can't see how Carr's kid can be as proud about how his dad made his money when compared to someone like Joe Montana's kid.... much less Chad Pennington's kid. Two of the three gave everything to be the best of the best, the best they could be. The third half-assed it & conned 3 organizations out of millions.

Totally agree . David's main job is between August thru January . He works out and other things during the year but the meat and potatoes is maybe 6 months . He couldn't even do that for whatever reason but he got paid .

Like you , I have worked awful hours , sometimes during storms sometimes when it was freezing , sometimes on Christmas . I did this to take care of my family . That's what a father does and to applaud a man for being in the position to not work and stay home , is like applauding a man for being a man .

David Carr, John Skelton, TylerThigpen will work out for Cowboys
With Tony Romo unlikely to suit up again this season, the Dallas Cowboys are on the lookout for quarterback insurance behind backup Kyle Orton, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports.

A source informed of the team's plans told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Monday that free agents David Carr, John Skelton and Tyler Thigpen will work out for the Cowboys.

Conned? If I'm not mistaken, two of the organizations knew he would be a back up and one was taking a chance no matter because he was a rookie. The organizations gave their offer and he gave his and BOTH agreed. There's no con in that.
