Silly exercise, but my brain works that way sometimes. If you could go forward in time 30 years and grab one of those sports almanacs like from the movie and come back to 2013, of course you'd start betting and get rich. Not part of the exercise. But if you knew because of this, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the Texans were not going to win (or even go to) the Super Bowl in the next 30 years, and no idea after that, would you still be a Texans fan? And if so, how dedicated a fan would you be?

Denial. I'd just refuse to believe it. I'm a strong willed person (aka hard-headed), so I'd be even more fanatical, dead set on the future being wrong.

It wouldn't matter what team you rooted for in that circumstance. If you knew the outcome the excitement is gone, it becomes a story and not a sport.

If I had a sports almanacs from the future it wouldn't matter if the Texans didn't have a winning season over the next thirty years or made every playoff and won 8 Superbowls thru 2043. Knowing the outcome has impact either way.

But if you knew because of this, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the Texans were not going to win (or even go to) the Super Bowl in the next 30 years, and no idea after that, would you still be a Texans fan? And if so, how dedicated a fan would you be?

When I started with this franchise, in 2002, I knew then it was a longshot to ever win a Super Bowl. Granted, I was not as die-hard as many of you were at the time.

When I bought my season tickets in 2006, it wasn't because I thought they were going to win a Super Bowl in the next 5 or 6 years. It was because I identified with the team & I love football.

As long as they're competitive & in the play-offs more often than not, I'd still feel good about my investment. I've got a pretty good "football family" we don't hunt or fish, or any of that stuff. We get together on the weekends & watch football. We eat, drink, have fun & what not..... football is at the center of all that. For me it's the Texans, for my Brothers, sisters, in-laws, etc... it's another team, but we all get together & have fun with it.

If the Texans win the Super Bowl in the next 10 years, they'll be the only expansion team in the "modern era" to have done so (unless one of those teams, Carolina, Jacksonville, Cleveland, do it in that time).

wouldn't happen because I would make billions betting on the winners, offer McNair a price he couldn't refuse and buy the team myself and build a championship team...

That's if the NFL owners would allow me to own a team because I won my billion on betting, and betting is not permissible in the NFL, so they would say no to my proposal, thus sending the Texans into a 30 year drought of never winning a Super Bowl and me with my billion I got all because of that stupid almanac...

Screw you Doc Brown and your infernal time machine...

wait... what was the question?

After about 10 yrs. of betting and winning all the other sporting events you'd have enough money to buy the Texans and change their course of history. Yes I'd still be a fan. It's not all about the outcome, alot of the fun is the journey.

I would still be a fan bc I don't care about winning, rather I care about the valuation of the franchise:cowboy1:

If they were to NEVER win another game i would still be a fan. Are wins and loses important ? Sure they are.

But for me it is more than that, to me the texans represent more than football, more than the score on Sunday. They represent the only connection i have left of my father who committed suicide in 2005. He was a Texans fan and we watched all the games together.

Every time i see them out on the field on Sundays it makes me feel close to him again. So as much as i would love to see them win a SB, it isnt about that for me.

I would be a fan as long as watching games is fun for me.

Of course I will stick with the team if they hit a rough patch, but if we talk about a 10year span of suckyness I think I most likely start follow more closely one of the other teams I like.

I highly doubt I would become as huge a fan as I am for the texans now tho.

I won't buy any team merchandise and I will always be watching back to the texans hoping that one day they will come back to entertain me.

I don't feel I am a bandwagon fan because my goal is not to root for the winning team, but to root for a team that entertain me.

I'm not from texas so I don't have any bond to the city itself, this team is the first and only I followed in my life tho, so it's hard to abandon it.

So yes, even if I knew that the texans wouldn't make it to the SB for the next 30 years I would still watch the games as long as it's fun, and I would be the best fan I can be from over here. :texflag:

Knowing what would happen over the next 30 years - whether that meant no Super Bowls or 5 or 10 Super Bowls would pretty much ruin it for me.

A big part of the fun and enjoyment of being a fan is not knowing what's going to happen. Whether that's the entire week leading up to a playoff game, or whether it's the 30 seconds waiting for your team to run a play from the 3 yard line trailing by 4 points with 7 second left in the game.

Knowing the ultimate result - whether good or bad - would change the dynamic too much to make being a fan anything like it is now.

Knowing the Texans would never be in a super bowl in my life time would end my NFL watching days. I'm not a sports fan at all. I don't give a $hit about baseball, basketball (although I used to LOVE basketball watching) or anything else. If Houston has an NFL team, I'll watch, if not, I won't. But not if I knew before hand they'd never amount to anything. I'm just not that interested in watching sports on TV. Frankly, most of it's boring to me.

Houston is my hometown and that's the biggest reason I root for the Texans. I will dance with the one that brought me, even if she moves like molasses and hurts herself when she steps on my toes.

wait... what was the question?

Hopefully you would become the owner, because obviously you would be a winner and that would be a change for this org.

It would be nice to have ownership whose main goal was to do everything possible to try to win a Lombardi.

If I knew the outcome of all the games/seasons over the next 30 years I think it would take pretty much all the fun out of it. Since we're talking about a "Sports Almanac" and not just a specific book on the Texans I think it would probably ruin any enjoyment I had in sports in general. I'd probably just go find something else to do.

Knowing would screw everything up. I don't want to know what's going to happen.

I sort of already decided we won't win one in the next 10. Later we may have a new owner and Kubiak will be gone.

But since this is a whimsical thread, how stupid was getting picked off 1st base last night? You're down 2 runs, nobody else is on, and it's the 9th inning. Your run doesn't mean anything unless another one scores behind it, in which case you score automatically. There are 2 outs, so you can't even say you want to reach 2nd base fast enough to prevent a double play. There is NOTHING to be gained by taking a chance.

Can I ask why you interject random baseball talk into threads about the Texans? Most people really don't give a crap about baseball these days.

I would burn it so nobody has any chance to read it; or I can make millions of copies and distribute them freely.
When people start changing their betting behavior, the lines will move, and the outcome will change. When the money movement changes (even one or two per cent), it often affects the outcome of the games.

Even one person trying to take advantage of the situation greedily can change the course of events just the same.

The longer into the season, the difference in win-loss among the teams will be too much for things not to go astray.

When you temper with fate, things should change.
In quantum physics, there are parallel universes.
When one has a different thought, or make a different choice, one is shifting parallel realities.

Give it a thought, it will drive you crazy.

Why did most of us pick the Texans to be our NFL team? Because we are from Houston or the surrounding area. Take away that geographical connection and most of us would be rooting for other teams.

Guarantee me that the Texans would never win the superbowl and they'd have 1 less fan. 100 hours or so invested each season without a chance at a championship would be a colossal waste if time.

That said - go Texans. =)

I find it hard to believe you could remember the results of every single game, you would most likely end up scrolling through the SB champions and realize in 30+ years texans are never there.

Then you can maybe still enjoy the games/seasons, that depends on you.

I know I could, as long as they play good football.

to me having an horrible team that wins a SB out of luck is no better than not winning a SB at all.

--edit--

I know that's just me tho, I asked that in a different thread and people more or less agreed than a SB is better than no SB

I'm thinking in terms of "I got a book with all the scores/stats in it" and knowing me I'd spend a ton of time in it. Then I'd be tempted to go back into it every time I went to watch a game. That's just how my brain works. If I have access to the outcome I'm going to want to know what it is as soon as possible.

A book like that in my hands would be good for making money and that's about it. It would otherwise take most of the joy out of the games to me. See, one thing about sports that stands out in this era when compared to other forms of entertainment is that until the games are played you really don't know what is going to happen or how it will play out. Now a TV show or movie will have spoilers. If it is something you're interested in then you can damn near see the entire thing in bits and pieces while you stalk it over the year or two it takes to bring to the screen. With so much media out there all looking for information it's almost impossible to surprise anyone these days. With sports (and my sport of choice is the NFL) there's the chance for real surprise there. I'd hate to lose that.

All you'd have to do is alter the space continuum and ensure the Texans drafted the good players and made the right moves; as documented in the almanac. Of course you'd need to pony up some funds to buy the team first but wth, we're already being unrealistic.

If you won enough you could just buy the NFL and change the rules.

Yes, I'd still be a dedicated Texans fan, because if we're going to go with the "time travel movie" theory.. we all know all it takes to change a team's fortune is some drunk Ahole named Lou sitting in a hot tub to puke on a squirrel and then all bets are off.

If I already knew the outcome, probably not going to be a fan. This thing is about entertainment. Win or lose, and not knowing which until it's over, is entertainment to me. If I already know how things are going to turn out for the next 30 years, I see no entertainment value there.

It would be like going back and rewatching all the games they've played to this point. How excited are you going to be going back and watching every game of 2012, knowing how it all turned out? And that's even if you're a Steelers fan and know they'll win 6 Super Bowls. The strategy, the excitement, the anticipation, the hope, all of that is gone.

That's true.

These four posts already did a great of of explaining my perspective (good job guys! :)).

Have you ever recorded a game because you had something else that you had to do? And then you avoid all media and anyone that could spoil it for you? You want to watch the game - even if it's already over - without knowing the outcome. You don't want the ending spoiled, because honestly, when you find out your team lost a blowout game, only the most hardcore masochistic fan continues to watch.

Yes exactly and to add to that have you ever recorded a game that your team won and then had someone tell you that the Texans won and/or what the final score was? Even though you knew the win was a done-deal was watching that recorded game any fun at all really? In my case I can say it was nothing like watching a game. That's because you're watching "highlights" and most of them aren't really highlights. You're fast-forwarding around all the ordinary stuff and looking for the scoring drives and big plays. Even those, as cool as they are will still just be highlights.

yep, I agree completely. I still have the Texans first playoff game on my DVR. Mainly because I took my son to it. We have watched it since, but like you said, we are just watching highlights. It's cool to sort of feel the vibe and remember being there, but certainly lacks any of the drama and anticipation of a live game.

If I knew all of the outcomes before the games happened I'd never watch football again because all of the magic would be taken away.

I watch a lot of football. I watch the Texans games live (or in the stadium) & DVR everything else. During the week I'll watch the DVr'd game, NFLReplay, & I'll rewatch the Texans' game at least once.

It doesn't bother me that I know who won or lost. I like watching how it all unfolded.

Terrence Williams & Tony Romo are on my fantasy team, so I already knew Romo threw three Touchdowns & Terrence only had one of them. But I didn't know when. There were a couple of bombs to Williams that I thought was going to be his TD, but wasn't. I got excited.... then not. Even after he scored the TD, there were a couple of plays where I thought he was going to score again & I got caught up in wanting him to score...

But that's me.

You will have to ask eriadoc; he's the one with the almanac.

If he win plenty on all kinds of bets, he can always bet a ton against the Texans.
In order for the house to make up the loss revenues, they will find a way for the Texan's to cover the line, thus enhancing the Texans chance to win the big ones.

So how did you enjoy yourself coming to the games, knowing that Schaub was about to throw pick sixes and the loss is in the book?

Must be loads of fun, eh? :wadepalm:

At the Seattle game I figured they had time to kick a field goal. So I was optimistic.

For OT, we won the toss.... I was optimisitc.

Defense got a stop..... I was optimistic.

Special teams gave up a big return... I started gathering my things.

It sucks that we lost, I'm not going to lie, but that was a pretty good game overall.

How about results like 9-30, 3-34.
Knowing those scores beforehand, you would still go to the game to find out exactly how it happened? :swatter:

Even the way we're playing now, I'd have a hard time believing a score like that. I'd at least want to go see one game just to see what's going on. Then if Peyton, or Brady, Marshawn Lynch, Megatron, Peterson... someone like that came to town, I'd want to see them.

To me, it's like a music concert. I know the words to all the songs, but there's a lot more to a performance than that.

It's not like stand up when you already know the punchline.

As much football as you watch & rewatch, I figured you were more like me in this respect.

There are different reasons to watch a game; one of them involves the rush and uncertainty from not knowing the outcome.

Watching games to learn about things is a different reason.

Listening to music also has different moods; however, there's nothing like hearing a tune for the first time and being moved or attracted by it.

Wouldn't bother me a bit. Support, by definition, is about being there through thick and thin. Winning is simply a bonus, if it happens at all.

Unfortunately, I am reasonably sure there will be no Super Bowl wins in the next 30 years. In fact, I'd say the odds of Houston losing a franchise for a second time are better than a Super Bowl win - no matter the ownership. It was more than 30 years ago the last time Houston was anywhere near a Super Bowl, and even then, it wasn't really that close. Add in the 14-16 years prior to that and you've got close to 50 years of complete NFL futility.

That's the winning attitude. I hope the fanbase holds BoB to a higher standard than you do and begins to vote with their wallets. That would be the only thing that gets BoB's attention. So are you saying BoB needs to die before the Texans win a SB? Because if you are, then we are in agreement. Until then the fanbase will be supporting a loser. IMHO

I guess you live life enjoying supporting losers. Me not so much. And no I'm not a bandwagon fan.

Knowing the outcome in advance makes a difference.

For instance, would you marry a woman if you knew for certain that she was going to cheat on you with multiple men in your bed?

Hey, y'all can still get some good happy years before it happens.

Hope in the unknown outcome is a powerful thing and often keeps us going. The 2005 season when the Texans were 2-14 was the most brutal sports season I have ever had the misfortune to witness. The only thing that kept me going was hope that things would get better (and obviously they did).

I do that every Sunday. My wife comes through the room and asks me "Is this real time?" I tell her "Yeah, it's REAL TIME, just not live so I can buzz the commercials." She whoops out her Smarty Pants Phone(tm) and threatens to spoil it till she gets "The Look".

Works for me.
