John Lopez editorial on Dan Reeves

This editorial is not flattering . . for Reeves or McNair.

Move signals confusion in front office

At the proper time and in the right environment, Reeves could offer some insight to what ails the Texans. But this is not that time. He could offer a different, perhaps enlightening perspective — but can he do it from inside meeting rooms and coaching offices with three games remaining?

Even if you are McNair, the beloved one around Houston, this time you come off looking bad across the country.

didnt like the article at all. has anyone from the chron even tried to put a possitive spin on this? all anyone has done is make condescending remarks about reeves and mcnair

I guess I don't agree in general. If nothing else, Reeves may give a more fair evaluation of the players than they get from the coaching staff. Our staff has tendency to have favorites who they are reluctant to replace with non-favorites.

well as his role of a consultant, he is to make evaluations and nothing more. alot of people are looking too far into the future with him becoming our next GM or HC since he said he might be here longer than what his contract is for (6 weeks)

The whole season has been full of confusion. I think this is actually a good thing. Let someone come in who has been around the game and in different organizations and let them try to offer some insight. Personally I don't think he should be the next HC or GM but what does it hurt to bring him in. So what if the move makes the front office and coaching staff uncomfortable. I've been uncomfortable watching this team all season and frustrated because we have declined so rapidly. Maybe we can get some answers out of the current staff before they get the axe.

Calpine just hired a reorganization specialist to change direction in their company . There was no one in the business section crying about how dumb that was or what a slap in the face it is . Why , because the company stinks ... they need help and now .

CC and Dom are already the laughing stock of the league and so is the team . The worst thing to do is nothing ... the next worst thing to do is fire Dom and keep CC . This will be the first day that the front office is held accountable for big mistakes and the team will be better for it .

As far as McClain and Lopez go ... the Texans and CC must have served Kolaches at press conferences and practices . They know that these days are ending and they may have to stop at the Shipley's for their treats .

Reeves is McNair's honest broker. He gives McNair a headstart on prep for free agency and the draft by evaluating our current talent and needs. This was a bold and smart move...Cass and Cap can only assist him in his evaluation.

McNair is truly a smart businessman.

My 2 cents.

Two things:
(1) Too many things happening too fast to waste a whole month waiting for this waste of a season to be mercifully flushed down the toilet before the far more important offseason begins. And maybe its not according to protocol and awkward for Capers and Casserly - who cares ?
(2) The Chronical is probably PO'd that it was caught flat footed along with
everybody else on this story and totally missed out on an opportunity to scoop it

Pfft.... Lopez. So now Reeves is the grim reaper and everyone should be looking over their shoulder? Well - GOOD.

The cush job to do just enough to get by while your in-experinced boss hopes things turn around on their own have gone by the wayside. Amazing - you'll actually have to EARN that paycheck and do your homework to be successful - what a concept.

Better start doing your job, boys - your resume is now being updated with 3 games to go.

I guess Lopez would've prefered Bob do something like we did this year, wait about 4 games into next season before he brought in someone he could trust.

It's a great move on McNair's part. Desperate times deserves desperate measures. When your 1-12, what is there to loose. Maybe this move of hiring Reeves will bring some accountability from the GM and HC. From now on, they will have somebody with NFL insight looking over their shoulders.

Well said!! I second the Pfft.... Lopez.

I don't think Lopez is pretty enoug to Pfft.

The fun thing to do all over the USA right now is kick the Texans.

And just as everybody wants us to pick Reggie Bush because he's the "sexy pick" and it's Reggie Bush all day and all night on all the media everywhere you look, so it is with the media on how to treat the Texans right now. The smart move is to continue to kick a team when they're down, since there's not much of a chance of the team standing up and punching back right now...so they will continue to mock the Texans until the Texans stand up and get healthy again. Then, the media will be championing McNair as a wise owner who knew how to get things back in shape again. As prominent sports writers, you tend to want to stay safe...to make the "smart" call...and you always limit your risky commentary calls unless you know the bet will pay off.

That's my two cents.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: Nice move McNair.

I'm losing more respect for the Chronicle beat writers each day . These guys are parrots ... they just know what their told and repeat it . Their having trouble because this not the NFL way of doing business .
On the other hand Bob Mcnair is a billionaire business man who brought a team to Houston with some assertive manuevers .
I'm siding with Mr. Mcnair and applaud his doing something out of the box . I think he realizes that his front office more than the coach has let him down .

I guess losing Vick for a majority the season will do that to a coach. Besides he was brought in as a consultant not a coach. He possibly could be a GM in the future for the Texans. The bottom line is he has won Super Bowls has a player and a coach. He has what it takes to get a team there one way or another.



I sure do miss when we had 2 papers to chose from so I don't have to read the Chronicle and John Lopez. Bring back the Post for competition.:brickwall

If you combined the football knowledge and intellect of all of the Chronicle staff into one brain, you would still not have one worth listening to.

Let's just review "the stuff" these geniuses have been pushing lately...

"the coaching staff is bad because McNair would not pony up the money for better assistant coaches" (an allegation never substaniated btw with an example and denied by McNair)

"sacks are down, the OL is better now that Pitts is playing LT, so we don't really need to draft a franchise LT after all blah blah blah" ( necessary first sales pitch before you go for the next installment of blabber below. Funny how they forgot to mention we still can't run anything that takes longer than 2 seconds or Carr gets planted)

"Reggie-Reggie-Reggie...if only we had Reggie we would have one some of our last games...he would scored on long runs that DD allowed himself to be tackled on by professional safeties with an angle on him"

"Reggie-Reggie-Reggie II...of course you take and keep Reggie with the number one pick never mind the trade value he might bring"

and the latest installment of dribble....

"Dan Reeves...with his record why would McNair think that he has all the answers blah blah blah"

I just wish we still had the Houston Post has a choice. Bottomline, nice start Mr. McNair...thanks!

Wow, what a horrible article. He bases his arguments with a bunch of assumptions that are at best short-sighted. After reasing that is seems no matter what McNair did Lopez was going to write an article criticizing him.

Good post, Honoring Earl. I agree the Chronicle beat writers stink. Their reasoning ability is so bad, I'm almost embarrassed for them.

I buy the Chronicle mainly for the pro football coverage, but the writers are so bad I'm starting to question whether I should let my subscription lapse and rely on the internet.

It's a shame, too, because I used to have a high regard for McClain. Now, I think he's a blathering old fool who needs to retire.

I would say you have pinned the tail on our staff and front office with this take. Anyone who has dealt with local media outlets knows that if they are not given a tip they will go negative no matter how terrific the move may be.

What a horrible article - Honestly I would be shocked if the Chronicle didnt get some sort of letter from Mr. Mcnair's lawyers for defamation of character. Truly another brainless wonder working at the local Rag. Over the years the more and more they open their pie-holes the less comes out worth listening too.

Bring back the Post!!!
