With a chance to win a third consecutive national championship with his No. 1 Trojans, coach Pete Carroll told ESPN Radio 710 in Los Angeles that he will not interview for any jobs outside of USC this year.

In an interview on "The Big Show with Mason and Ireland" Friday, Carroll said:

"I'm going to have the chance to recruit eight or nine first-round draft picks. In the NFL you can get one a year. So we're really excited about the place we are, I'm happy to be here."

ESPN Radio: "Does that mean you're going to pass on the chance to interview for any jobs outside of SC this year?"

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any jobs."

ESPN Radio: "Wow."

Pete Carroll: "I won't interview for any of them."

The Trojans are 12-0 this season and haven't lost a game since Sept. 27, 2003. Since Oct. 6, 2002, USC is 45-1. In those 45 victories, only five were decided by less than a touchdown.

As a college head coach, Carroll is 42-9 (all at USC).

Carroll was the head coach of the New England Patriots for three seasons (1997-99) and New York Jets for one year (1994).

He guided the Patriots into the playoffs in his first two seasons. Carroll's record as an NFL coach was 33-31.
 
Pete failed as a NFL head coach before. What makes anyone think he'll succeed now. You can rah rah college kids, but you can't multi million dollar players!

Bill Belicheck failed as a HC with the Browns.

If the Colts win it all this year then one could argue that the expectations were so high @ Tampa but that regardless of the deep playoff pushes, Tony Dungee failed, but then he will not been seen as a failure aftre the colts win it all. (given that they do)
 
I kinda' figured that he was happy where he's at. I mean, it'd be a little crazy to leave the NCAA at the top of his game for a bottom dweller in the NFL.

Not sure if I'd qualify him as an NFL failure, though, any more than you could say Dom Capers is a failure. They both took teams to the playoffs, and that has to be some measure of success. Every coach has bad seasons in his history. And most definitely not every coach will win an NFL Championship.

He's a great coach. His problems were with the owners and control. At USC he controls his own destiny. Take a peek at where he is now.

I don't think that he will leave USC because he is in the perfect situation. But you can rah rah pro football players. Dick Vermeil is doing a pretty good job of it.

Controls the destiny of what? A bunch of high school blue-chippers gathered up from around the country. With talent like that pouring into that school every year, I could fricken coach them to a championship.

Carrol might be a good recruiter, but that shows squat about how good a coach he is. But then again, he might not even be a decent recruiter. The idea of playing football at USC is a recruitment in itself.

He controls all facets of the team. It's naive to believe that all you need to win at the college level is recruitment. That's obviously important, but not all, by a long shot.

Kids are now wanting to play for USC, as Pete turned the program around in a very short time. It's easier now, to get the blue chip players.

He was the head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots for 3 seasons (1997-99) and New York Jets for 1 year (1994). He guided the Patriots into the playoffs in his first 2 seasons, winning the AFC Eastern Division title at 10-6 in 1997 and advancing to the second round of the playoffs, then posting a 9-7 regular season mark in 1998. His overall record in New England was 27-21 in the regular season (including 8-8 in 1999) and 1-2 in the playoffs. He owns the franchise's second-best winning percentage (54.9%).

I'll be curious to se if McNair will open the pocketbook up for a coach and staff. I read somewhere that he was pretty stingy on paying coaches and that is why we have Fangio

Can't blame him. He is making the perfect situation perfect.
 
The best thing to happen to Pete Carroll was Norm Chow. Before Chow arrived, Carson Palmer had been an underachieving star out of high school. Chow turned him into a Heisman winner and the Trojan wagon began to roll.

Carroll reminds me more of Butch Davis than anybody. He'll do okay on the professional level but he's better suited for the college game.
 
His act won't fly in the NFL. You're not gonna get Snoop to perform at pro preactices and have everyone respect you because of it.

You're not gonna be able to pull of the lax attitude with players looking for a sign of weakness in their coach.

He just wouldn't work, and props to him for staying with what he's great at and wanting to do it. People like him and Tressel know what they are meant to do, and it's coach college football.

News: NFL rumors starting to stalk Pete Carroll again.

Muse: They're inevitable. But while Carroll has always said he's enjoying college football and has no real interest in another go at the NFL, the right situation could change his mind.

The Houston Texans might be that situation. Texans owner Bob McNair is prepared to clean house in the front office and coaching staff and maybe be willing to give Carroll total control as head coach and top man in the personnel department.

Two reasons to take it seriously: One, McNair has deep pockets and the Texans are 1-12 and in line for the first draft pick, meaning Carroll could have his choice of Bush and Matt Leinart if he went to Houston.

Two, besides Leinart, USC will lose several other seniors and potentially four key juniors if they decide to try the NFL early. If there was a time to reconsider options, it would be now.

A lot of coaches think having success at one of the all-time great college football programs is better than any NFL job.

You get to live in the same city for a long long time, get paid well, and the pressure isn't as great. Whats not to love?
