Badboy's 1/4 season mock

Most of you regulars will know my mocks seldom follow the crowd and often offer controversial selections. I do try to document my reasoning behind each and look forward to suggestions or criticism. I think it is easy to call your shot on a player but I like to keep each within realm of possibility and use CBSSports/nfldraft rankings. Please remember these fluctuate almost weekly. Until Monday night apprx midnight, I had been tooting horn for Alabama QB McCarron who imo is most pro ready (that should be there when we pick). I came to the conclusion that despite fan outrage (including mine), Schaub is not going anywhere unless it is IR. Yes, he has dumb plays but so do Brady and Manning and they will not be on our roster. Also, I think Keenum is MS heir apparent & is being groomed for that by Kubiak. Links provide good info for true draftniks.

1. #23 CB Jason Verrett TCU 5'10" 176 sub 4.5 2013: 16 T 1 sack
This ball hawking cover corner has good swivle with smooth hips. 2012: 63 T, 46 solo, 5 TFLs, 16 breakups & 6 INTs. ranked # 18 eventual replacement for Joseph. Info links: http://gofrogs.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jason_verrett_748387.html

Perfect fit for Texans scheme and day one starter IF Newton does not get better. I see LT Brown/Harris LG Q Center Jones RG Brooks RT Newton & Oggy with Williams backup. Oggy can back up both OGs. 3. #87 Safety Ahmad Dixon Baylor 6' 205 4.39 (link baylorbears.com) can play either side and nickle CB. 2013: 17 T 2012: 102 T, 1 sack, 2 INTs
Eventual replacement for Manning and he is good in coverage as well as attacking line. Ranked #106

I agree with you regarding the Texans, MS, and Keenums future. In fact i was working on a mock last night but having trouble deciding where to spend the 1st round pick due to all the questions at QB and with Antonio Smith. At first glance I really like your mock, will have more time later to dig into it. Nice job.

Are you anticipating the Texans resigning Antonio, your mock doesn't reflect a replacement.

Thanks Wolf here was what you might not have had time to read:

5. # 151 DE/DT Kony Ealy Missouri 6'5" 275 2012 (soph) 37 Ts, 10 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 7 pass breakups. Backs up Crick who replaces Ninja's $9 m cap hit. Ranked #160

For quite sometime, I have been advocating allowing Antonio Smith (Ninja) to leave after this season. I still love the guy & if he would extend for two years at a reasonable rate say $3 m cap hit (I don't care how bonus and base work) I'd probably be all over that. I want at least $6 m to go towards JJ Watt in 2015. Watt gets $2.9 in 2014. I think a deal could be worked that allows Smith to have a good 2014 and lesser amount in 2015. However, the $9 m has to go. Smith turns 33 on Oct 21st so 35 in 2015. Why should he settle for less when he could get a 3 year deal for say $15 million elsewhere? He might realize he is in perfect situation with this D but... come on Chris Olsen show me your magic!

Is Jared Crick the replacement in 2014? He only has only four tackles but Smith has to come off field for anyone to get stats; good for Ninja, not so good for backups. lol

No Quarterback?!?!? :heh:
I know, and man I want McCarron like I want baby back ribs. As I said I had him first until Monday after the Seachickens. Most would have said that should have convinced me to go QB but it is not about me but rather Smithiak and despite all the pissin and moanin on MB, that ain't happening. Keenum (my preference over Yates) looked good preseason as did Yates and both are under contracts next season $495,000 & $691,000 for TJ.

What if Casey Paschall 6'4" 230 TCU is signed as UDFA? Trade Yates in off season and go with Schaub (2014 only), Keenum and Paschall?

I like Verrett, but just not here. Ogbi is interesting and its arguable he's been better than little Matthews so far this year. Not a fan of Baxter in the third even though I know he has potential. Mainly just don't care for picks 1 and 3. I guess I could live with the rest. Good job though man!

badboy, I think the Amigos need to reel you in a bit.

Trend in CB is bigger not smaller, might be a talent like Janoris Jenkins but lets keep it more physical, remember Kareem despite all his faults is a physical corner, already lost Quin in FA so not a big fan of this selection, though I do respect the position. Would prefer the Oregon CB in first over Varrett.

We all like Ogbueh but shouldn't he stay in school because he stands a good chance then of going first round?

Dixon strikes me more of an in the box safety, after taking Swearinger I just don't see similar type of player here, though your value is good.

Sam Montgomery then Lamin Barrow LSU? I don't know but is another body to throw out on the edge. could work out sweet but just don't have opnion yet on him.

I like adding another DE but if anything Texans will restructure Ninja cap hit. He is a co-captain of a very good defense, shows no signs of slowing down or losing a step, he is a very important part of this team, still.

Like your 6th round selection a big coner who could flip & play some free safety. Same for 7th, just type of good player who could develop in this league..

Uh, okay but who is Baxter? I have Ahmad Dixon as a 3rd round safety if that is whom you're referring? If so, what is your thinking? I did have Boston in 4th but he was burned a bit too much 2012.

You won't get Verrett much lower and may not be there at 23. ESPN's Rob Rang has him going to Jags #14. Could you offer a little more on why you don't like these two picks?

Sorry, I meant Dixon. For whatever reason my mind was thinking one thing and typed another. Dixon is a decent prospect in my opinion, but he's struggled when I've seen him against good competition. They haven't played anyone yet this year so I guess we'll see.

Verrett is a smallish corner with great instincts, but its just something about him I don't love. Brother went to TCU so i watch them play all the time. He jumps a lot of routes and is great in off man coverage and zone, but he can be had in man to man. He's not a big guy so he gets out-bodied sometimes. Don't get me wrong I think he's a late first round talent, but he'll have to end up in the right system to be successful. He has better balls skills than Kareem, but he reminds me too much of him to invest that high of a pick in the first round. I'd rather pass.

Amigo, you know I am open to discussion and you also know I prefer big fast corners but imo as of now Verrett better than Purifoy & Gilbert neither of which are considered ball hawks. KJ is 5'10 and Joseph a shade under 5' 11". We simply disagree on Olomu also 5'10. Physical? My guy had 46 solo tackles. It will be interesting to see who has higher vertical.

Ogbuehi could return but so could others such as Kouandjio. IIRC many thought Matthews would come out last draft and had him mocked early in first as did you. If Oggy and Kouandjio return, Ogbuehi could be 6-8 best OT coming out. Also, IIRC and I may need to check our PMs, you suggested him as a second rounder to Texans who could "plug and play." I realize you prefer to focus only on seniors but at this stage I project all possible players who could possibly come out.

Totally disagree on Dixon as he can play box or cover.

Probably better to compare Trevardo Williams to Barrow than Montgomery. Both would have difficulty playing ILB, not so Barrow. I am still not sure where Montgomery fits and so far he hasn't, lol.

Hope you are correct on Ninja coming back for a third of his cap but please explain why he would?

Thanks for your input as always, makes me think.

1) Verrett- I feel that he is a bit of a reach here, but nothing terrible. I know you said that the Texans wont be going QB, but I have to disagree, and it is hard to get past when evaluating your mock. I would probably look RT if I was not taking a QB.

2) I need to watch this guy more, but I like what I have seen. Good pick.

3) I dont know this guy, but can't argue the position.

4) I like it.

5) I need to watch this guy, but I like the position. DE could be a real need if the Texans decide to let Smith go due to salary reasons. In fact, if that is the plan, I would probably try to take one earlier, and get a true starter. Maybe ND's Tuitt in the first? I also like Bama's Stinson (2nd round)

6) Nah, one CB is enough. Plus, Jackson has looked bad this year. Each time I watch ND, if the D is giving up a big play, odds are Jackson was involved.

7) Are you looking at Marsh as a DE or OLB? OLB/Rush backer I am good with. Otherwise, I think two DEs is a bit heavy.

I like that you are going outside the box, but I think you are going too heavy on DB. You have given me a couple players to watch- I look forward to it.

I worry about the Texans without Ninja. Besides Watt, I don't think anyone from our current roster that able to put pressure like Ninja. Without Watt-Ninja duo pressure, our front 7 pressure may decline greatly and putting DBs in very bad situation. However, I do understand it will be difficult to keep Ninja with his cap situation. Therefore, I would really like for the Texans to draft DE in the early round rather than mid to late round a developmental prospect. (If there's a good early round prospect next coming draft)

I like your idea of taking a DE/DT early in the draft as well so that we have another stud opposite Watt but the problem I see with that is that we've got Crick, Jamison, and Montgomery as backups now so it's hard for the team to justify using a high draft pick on that position. I think Crick will be the heir apparent to Antonio for at least one year and if he can pressure the QB then the spot will be his for years to come, if not then we'll probably draft a DE high in 2015, but I think Crick gets a year to prove himself.
