Three Round H-Town Mock Draft

Round 1: (Trade Down to pick #4, pick up a third for this year and a first round pick in the 2007 draft. Dont say it cant be done look at the Eli-Rivers trade) LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson- Best offensive line prospect for the past 2 years, great in pass protection, amazing athleticism, solid run blocker. A little small, but in an NFL weight program, he will get bigger and stronger.

Round 2: TE Leonard Pope- Best all around TE in the draft. Great at stretching the field and has great hands. Good blocker who can get the job done in the running game. Great size, good speed, great hands, good run blocker. He reminds me of Tennesse's Ben Troupe.

Round 2B: (Trade our top 2 third round picks to move back up into the mid to late second round) OG Davin Joseph- Good at both run blocking and in pass protection. Will give us two solid young offensive linemen to build with. May not start right away, but will provide great depth at OG until he can come in and start, probably sometime in mid-season.

Round 3:S Greg Blue- Good size and nice speed. He will lay the hat, not great in coverage, but better than we have. I would compare him to Glenn Earl with better coverage skills. He can hit and make plays against the run but his coverage is at least average.

I don't like this mock at all. I would not call Ferguson a solid run blocker, but I do agree with trading down to pick up an OL, from what I've seen so far I would choose Eric Winston but we'll have to wait until the combine to grade OL. I still question Ferguson's ability to add weight and keep it. I don't like taking a TE with the #33 pick in the draft. Our current TEs have not been given an adequate chance to prove themselves as catching TEs, Bruener will never be a great pass-catching TE but Rivers can be decent and I say give Joppru one more chance since next year is the last of his contract. If our current TEs can't succeed with the new coaches we bring in, then Olsen from Miami will be available next year. I really doubt Davin Joseph will be available in the late second, might not even make it out of the first round. Among all the safeties available, I would not get Greg Blue. If he is the same as Earl only a little better coverage why would we get him, especially with a third round pick? My personal choice for safety would be Huff from UT since he is very fast and can cover. I am not sure I'd even get a safety in this year's draft, I'll wait until I have seen Earl and Brown play with each other for a few games, but if I was going to draft a safety I'd likely go with Huff.
 
Dont like it if you want DBrick that bad you can make it were we trade down to about 10 i think after the combine's i think he is going to be a 10 to 16 pick.


i like the leaonard pope god knows we need a tight end bad.
 
D'Briskashaw Ferguson is the best LT in the NFL draft period, no question. He would have been a top pick last year. No he is not a great run blocker, but he is good, but you CAN NOT find a better pass protector in the NCAA.

Oh and Davin Joseph will fall to the second round. If you research your draft, OG usually dont even go in the first round, tackles are usually the opnly position on the o-line that you see high to mid first round draft picks. The highest a offensive guard or center has been drafted in the NFL since 1998 is #17 and he is not even the best OG in the draft, he will probably be a mid to low second rounder.

Rivers sucks and Joppru is done.
 
D.Brick is a good pass blocker .... but not a stud run blocker .... I would rather trade down further (about 12-15) and take Max Jean Giles to play guard (he can play both OG and OT)

L.Pope WILL NOT be available in the second round .... He's a mid to late first rounder ...thats from just about every draft source available . Nfl draft countdown has him as the 21st best prospect overall . GBN has him at 19th overall

Like I say Ferguson is the best offensive line prospect in the last two drafts. He is good, but not a stud run blocker. Oh, and most teams willl have Mercedes Lewis and Vernon Davis ranked higher than Pope, when is the last time you have seen 3 TEs go in the first round.

According to NFL draft Countdown ....

14. Marcedes Lewis SR TE U.C.L.A.
A wide receiver in the body of a tight end who can be a major weapon.

19. Vernon Davis JR TE Maryland
Amazing physical specimen who will be a true workout warrior.

21. Leonard Pope JR TE Georgia
At 6-7 and 250 lbs. he is the best all-around tight end out there.


Three of the top 21 Overall Prospects are TE's ..... Many teams could use a stud TE .... Its likely that you would have to trade up to get him .

I like the pick but I just dont see him available come round two... Other than Greenbay , Atlanta , Kansas City and San Deigo .... name a team that wouldnt upgrade the position with any of the three .

And you are correct Lewis and Davis are rated above Pope on MOST boards , although a lot can and will change between now and the draft especially with the combine a long way off .... Pope still has to declare .

1.5 Winslow CLE, 1.32 Watson NE, 2.40 Troupe TEN:brickwall

3 in the 1st round in 2002:
1.14 Shockey NYG, 1.21 Graham NE, 1.28 Stevens SEA


We should look at the teams that might take a tight end.

That's a dozen obstacles to overcome in getting Pope, Lewis, or Davis.
 
The Jets recently traded a first round pick to the Raiders for Doug Jolley if I'm not mistaken, so I doubt they will look to get a new TE after giving up so much for him. The Raiders may look for another one but I think they're relatively happy with Courtney Anderson so far and will look to upgrade many other needs first. I also don't think St. Louis' current offense really calls for the use of a TE so I doubt they spend any kind of significant pick on one. I think Jacksonville's TE is alright too, but I could be wrong on that.
 
Boo Williams got benched in favor of Ernie Conwell, because he didn't show a lot of passion while playing and would disapear from games.

well on our 3rd 2nd round pick I'd like to see Bennie Joppru healthy for a change :heh: along with the other TE :challenge

Dallas( Witten), New York Giants(Shockey), Baltimore(Heap), Cleveland wont take one(K2), Miami(McMicheal), New England(Graham and Watson), Pittsburg(Miller), Colts(Clark), Phili(L.J.Smith). Well that makes 13 that wont pick a TE.

I updated this since Alex Smith (3rd rd. in '05 from Stanford) was taken by Tampa, so I took Gruden's team off the list.
 
actually the Top College linemen are drafted late in the 1st rd. many of whom played LT in College which Davin has been doing for the Sooners. I'm going to take one last good look at him on Dec. 30th to base my final opinion of him but because of his ability to play the LT position at the level he has bodes well for him in the NFL, he is very much like Pitts and we all know Pitts is our best tackle/guard and a steal in the 3rd rd. the mere fact you have him listed on your mock gives you a thumbs up :thumbup
 
There are a few pretty good TEs in this draft but the majority of the teams that need a TE will be picking in the top 10-15 picks and I don't see any of them using one of those picks on a TE, you generally don't pick a TE that high unless they are a freak, and none of these guys are. All of these teams are not very good and have other positions that they will likely draft before a TE to improve their team.
 
Didnt buffalo just get a TE in round 3 last year?

p.s. KC got Kris Wilson in the 2nd round of 2004. So I dont see them going TE again so soon.
