2006 Cap Estimates A Pre-Cursor to the FA List

Now these are estimates assuming no one is resigned and the Cap increases to 92.5M. Now realizing this many of the FAs will be resigned on these lower teams, and there should be a decent amount of purging high contracts this year, and restructuring. Yeah, but if you look at teams like Cleveland, Vikings,and Cardinals it is gonna be hell going after top freeagents. These guys are going to be major players again.

McNair's current contract counts for $27 million of that number next year. Obviously that won't stand so they will either release him, restructure him, or he will retire. So his real hit will probably be about half that - which is still a big number.

Brad Hopkins and Benji Olson are the other two monster cap numbers that the Titans have to deal with along with other smaller but questionable value things like Travis Henry's 4 million.

It's easy to point fingers but the Texans have set themselves up to have considerable problems down the road as well with the deals they gave to Wade, Walker, Smith, Greenwood, and Wong. None of them will "play their contracts" as Casserly likes to say, and all will count millions in dead money when they are cut before their contracts expire.

True the Titans will have to release or restructure McNair's deal, but they are still going to be right at the cap limit after that happening so they will likely have to move some other players if they want to make any other significant moves.

That's why I also mentioned Brad Hopkins, Benji Olson and Travis Henry who also have cap unfriendly deals headed into '06. I have a feeling the Titans won't restructure McNair again.
