Ed Reed: My preparation is for long haul, not Ravens
Reed was a call-in guest Tuesday on "The Rich Eisen Podcast," where he explained why missing a game against the team he won a Super Bowl with seven months ago wouldn't be the end of the world.

"It's nothing that urged me to play this week, you know I didn't circle this on the calendar," Reed explained. "I said it earlier in the offseason that with my rehab I'm not preparing to play against San Diego or Tennessee or even the Ravens.

"It's about being there for the long haul, being there for the team when it really counts, and that's playoffs, the Super Bowl, AFC Championship Game."

Sunday will provide some extra nostalgia for Reed as the Ravens induct longtime teammate Ray Lewis into the team's Ring of Honor during halftime. Reed doesn't project any bitterness about his departure from Baltimore, where he starred for 11 seasons.

"Everything that transpired between me and the Ravens is business, you know I had a great career there," Reed said. "I never saw myself playing against the Ravens so nothing in my heart, my soul that's urging me to play."

"I know it's a special day because yeah, my boy is going in the Ring of Honor, more than deserved for him. I always pictured myself on the sidelines watching that happen at halftime or something."

Reed will be in the building for Lewis' big celebration. Whether he'll be on the sideline -- or in uniform -- remains to be seen.

Matt Elam promoted to Ravens starting free safety
Baltimore Ravens first-round draft pick Matt Elam has been promoted to the starting lineup, but the player he's replacing is a mild surprise.

Elam now is listed as the starting free safety on the team's official depth chart after playing 66 snaps to just six snaps for Michael Huff in Week 2.

The expectation was that Elam would eventually replace James Ihedigbo, who was a career special teamer before moving to Bernard Pollard's vacated strong safety spot this offseason...

Maaaaaaan. I'm a bit leery of this game. Ravens aint no joke, and they want some payback from last year. That front 7 is pretty damn stout and with 76 maybe out, Tate and Foster are gonna be up against it. Schaub is going to have to come big kind of like he did in Denver last year for us to pull this one out.

It's been mentioned, that the Ravens are struggling. Their loss to the Broncos & their struggle against the Browns are being used as evidence. But how much does that really tell us?

Most people believe the Broncos are playing better than any other team in the AFC..... some believe they're the best team in the league right now. A loss to Denver is not necessarily a bad thing.

The Browns... the lowly Browns, are a divisional opponent to the Ravens, much like the Titans are to us. Cleveland had a better defense than Tennessee in 2012 (slightly) & they've made some additions to that side of the ball as well. Their biggest problem last season was their offense... & Jake locker threw for less than 150 yards on Sunday.

All I'm saying is we probably shouldn't infer too much from the Ravens performance so far. Flacco has shown a knack for stepping up when he needs to & this week might be more than just a "nice to win" game. This is their home opener, they're going to induct Ray Lewis into their Ring of Honor..... & we don't do well against "emotional" teams.

No doom & gloom here, I expect a win in Baltimore, but it's going to look ugly.

After our first game against Baltimore in 2011, I thought we did a poor job matching up our corners on their WRs. Jjo on Bolden, Kj on Torrey Smith.

I like Kj, y'all know that. But he can't run with Torrey Smith. Jjo on the other hand doesn't have the strength to go one on one with Anquan Bolden.

The second time we played them, we flipped it & did a better job against the pass.

This year, there is no Bolden. Looks like Torrey Smith (who is off to a slow start this year) & Marlon Brown. I think Kj is a better player than he was in 2011, but still not in Torrey Smith's class as far as speed is concerned. Torrey & Kj both ran 4.4 forties, but Kareem doesn't play that fast.

Marlon Brown does. He's not only fast, but quick. I'd start the game with Jjo on Smith & see if Kareem can muscle the rookie out of the play. If that doesn't work, we'll probably incorporate more help on his side of the field.

The Ravens' fans seem to know us pretty well.

Here's the way I see it...

Schaub is widely derided by Houston fans (well, at least the one I used to work with who lives there). He's got a tremendous cast around him, but still makes bonehead plays. The case is really what worries me....

Let's start with the thing that gives us the most fits...TEs. Houston has one of the upper echelon ones in Daniels. They also have a guy who has 2 TDs in the first 2 weeks, Garrett Graham. We haven't had to face TWO strong TEs yet this year, but one strong one has given us fits each week. Combined with that, they have a strong tandem of outside WRs in AJ and Nuk Hopkins. Our secondary HAS to be ready to play with the big boys here. You can't slip versus these 4 targets, they will make you play.

With that being said, you have to worry a lot about the Houston rushing attack. Foster is still playing well, and Tate was a beast this week too. With so much heat in their passing game, we have to rely on the front 7 to do a lot of the work on stopping the run. Dumervil had a fantastic game vs Browns, but he may play limited snaps vs Houston, as I'm betting we'll have Upshaw out there to contain the edge. Hoping that Brandon Williams is on the path to getting better, because if he and Canty are both out, that leaves a pretty gaping hole at DE. Would be Spears and Jones, with Tyson to fill in. Yikes.

On the defensive side, Texans have the #4 total defense in YPG, #3 vs the pass. This comes in a week when we expect Rice will be limited or unavailable. ****. Obviously, worried about JJ Watt on the edge (Remember last year, he batted down a ton of Flacco balls at the line), but maybe more concerning is Cushing up the middle against a struggling interior line. Gradkowski and KO vs Cushing? Oh crap.

I'd consider going TE-less and just bringing in Wagner as a blocker on a heavy dose of plays to chip. Our TEs are doing next to nothing anyway in the passing game, and they both also suck as blockers.

On paper, this could be a pretty brutal game. Sorry to be less than optimistic here...

However, intangibles wise, you couldn't pick a better game for the Ravens. Having Ray go into the ROH, having Reed come back, HAS to fire up both sides of the ball a little extra, especially combined with the sluggish start.

Texans Kareem Jackson fined $42,000 for his hit on receiver Kendall Wright. He'll appeal. League's explanation for fine: ...for "forcibly hitting the defenseless player's head or neck area with the helmet, face mask, forearm or shoulder."

Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguli
Jackson also said a hit like that is worth the risk because there's a chance no flag comes out and maybe the guy fumbles. #Texans

When I asked Kareem Jackson about the hit Sunday he said the flag and even a potential fine wouldn't change the way he played. #Texans

John Harbaugh asked if Baltimore knew Ed Reed had hip issue when he signed w/ Texans: 'Ed's had a hip issue for about 4 years that we dealt with"

John Harbaugh asked if they have to adjust because JJ Watt gets into the passing lane so quickly: "Oh gosh, yeah. You really can't believe it until you see it"

Ravens QB Joe Flacco on if safety Ed Reed plays: "It'll definitely be a little weird to see him in a Texans uniform."

Ravens QB Joe Flacco asked if he would be surprised if Ed Reed didn't play against them: "I'm hearing he's going to play. So I guess so."
James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN
Harbaugh says Ray Rice doesn't really need to practice this week to play against #Texans. When asked how offense changes without Rice, "We'll see"
Jeff Zrebiec ‏@jeffzrebiecsun
He also said WR Andre Johnson (concussion) "should be ready to go" and LT Duane Brown (toe) will be "end of week decision."

On defense the Ravens have talent that dwarfs that of last season. Of course there’s better depth, vital to enduring the grind of the long season. But a quick look around the starting 11 reveals a rather significant upgrade.
Chris Canty, Marcus Spears and Brandon Williams are substantial improvements over the 2012 rotation that included a starter, one year removed from football and from tipping the scales at 400+, Ma’ake Kemoeatu. Elvis Dumervil is a more accomplished edge rusher than Paul Kruger and the 2013 version of Jimmy Smith is on the rise.
And let’s be honest, Daryl Smith is an upgrade over the 2012 version of Ray Lewis.
The defense is also healthier as defensive coordinator Dean Pees fields 3 Pro Bowl caliber players who were either lost or severely slowed by injury in 2012, namely Lardarius Webb, Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs.
This unit just needs a little time to gel.
Even if the Ravens lose (that’s what I suspect will happen), all isn’t lost if they make positive strides against a quality opponent.
It’s all about improvement while managing the season, remaining in the mix and then punching their ticket to the postseason dance.
Success in the NFL isn’t about who is the best team in September. It’s all about embracing the grind and steady improvement. It’s all about being the best during the playoffs.

Perhaps Terrell Suggs said it best as he cautioned the team following the win over the Browns.
“Let’s not kid ourselves…we’ve got some work to do.”

I think they've got the right mindset. & they know better than anyone.... it's about January & February.

Dennison says one can see Hopkins make a spectacular play one or two times a practice. #Texans

Rick Dennison says consistency is where Hopkins continues to get better. #Texans

"Consistency he's getting better and better at that," Dennison says on DeAndre Hopkins. #Texans

Dennison is asked if he sits down and picks Ed Reed's brain about the Ravens D. Reply: "Well (pause) we do our work." #Texans

Kubiak said Ed Reed told him he felt like he could play against the Titans. #Texans

"It's hard to say your punter's a weapon, but he is," Kubiak on Lechler. #Texans #puntersarepeopletoo

Owen Daniels didn't practice today, Kubiak says. Rest day for him. #Texans

Kubiak says with Duane Brown out, they needed some big bodies on the practice squad to explain bringing in a TE. #Texans

Kubiak impressed with DeAndre Hopkins' practice today. "Posey's very very close to being himself," Kubiak says. #Texans

As has been the case pretty much every practice, Kubiak says Reed has done the most he's done at practice thus far today. #Texans

As long as Johnson doesn't have a setback, Kubiak says he'll practice with pads tomorrow. #Texans

Besides Andre Johnson and Duane Brown, Kubiak says all practiced. #Texans
Drew Dougherty ‏@DoughertyDrew
Dennison: Brandon Brooks, Derek Newton have improved a lot, have done everything we've asked. #Texans

OC Rick Dennison: backup OT Ryan Harris has worked at LT and RT. We have confidence in him. #Texans
Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant
Dennison (on Schaub's strength): Coming from behind. His mental toughness has been great. He has been working his tail off every second.

Dennison (on Hopkins): It's his consistency. He works very hard in practice. He's improving everyday. #Texans

Dennison (on TEs): It creates a great deal of flexibility the addition of Graham alongside Owen. #Texans
John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL
I think Johnson will play but Brown won't. As far as Reed, I'm clueless, as we all are. We'll see him when we see him.

LT Duane Brown is the biggest concern. I don't see how a player with turf toe wearing a walking boot will play and risk making it worse.

Andre Johnson should play against the Ravens. Everyone, including his teammates and coaches, say he's doing very well.

Kubiak is always extra cautious when letting players return from major injury. Players have 2 show him on practice field they're 100 percent

Last week, Reed said he was still breaking own scar tissue in his hip and still had soreness, which means he wasn't going to play.

Nobody has a clue about Ed Reed's status for Sunday. If Reed says he's ready and shows them he is on the field, he'll play.

No D.Brown is worrisome. Our pass pro hasn't been great with him in the lineup, so that may not be to horribly different. He has moved people in the running game and I am not sure that Harris can.

"There are guys in the league who are way ahead of Cush and I know they're not," Wade Phillips on tackle stats. #Texans

Press box tackle stats annoy Wade Phillips becaues they aren't accurate. "One team in the league has 66 assists and we have 10." #Texans

Phillips says he was encouraged by last week. "We still haven't given up 300 yards in a game," Wade Phillips. #Texans
James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN
Reed said he wanted to play last week so his first game wouldn't be on turf. #texans

Ed Reed says he's trying to push it full throttle. Added he's a game time decision. #texans

"Those great ones still make plays." - Phillips on JJ Watt and Adrian Peterson making plays even after teams are well aware of them. #Texans.

Wade Phillips says "Press Box Stats" bother him. Says assists are judged really poorly."If I were a player I'd be upset about it." #Texans

Wade Phillips says obviously Ed Reed won't play a full game once he comes back. Added he's made some "Ball Hawk" plays this week. #Texans

Garrett Graham sat out practice after his hip started bothering him yesterday. Same hip that he injured in the preseason. #Texans

Kubiak says Arian Foster is now starting to look like himself. Says "He's a worker" but added that how good Tate has played has helped AF

Kubiak is sticking with Duane Brown and Ed Reed as game time decisions. #Texans

Andre Johnson is set to see an #NFL Doc in the next 24 hours. After that he should be cleared to play Sunday against #Ravens. #Texans

Ed Reed was in pads today. Kubiak says this is the most aggressive they've used him and says he's really practicing well right now. #TExans

Duane Brown and Garrett Graham didn't practice. Andre Johnson practiced in full. #Texans
Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant
Phillips says how the number of tackles and assists is an unofficial and inconsistent stat. Thinks Cushing has more and should be ranked higher.

Ah, Football!
I thought this was kinda funny considering who's saying it.. The Coach, Vonta Oher and Yanda all talk about how good of a player Watt is and how they'll just block him the best they can. Then, Flacco chimes in at the end saying you have to be physical with him.

Vonta:
"J.J.'s got a high motor and is a big, strong powerful guy who's very athletic and causes a lot of disruption," Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach said. "He makes a lot of plays from the backside and the front side. He's a handful to block."
Yanda:
"We all know who he is, he's a great football player,"
"He's got all the necessary tools and obviously all the moves. He swats the ball down, which is another thing to try to defend against. You try to block him to the best of your ability."
Oher:
"He's athletic, big and strong and knows how to play football," Oher said. "We definitely have to account for him."
Coach:
"He's hard to block in the run game, when you run at him, when you run away from him. He’s hard to block when you try to pass-block him. He bats balls, he gets sacks. He’s just a very dominant-type defensive player.”
And Flacco:
"You’ve got to get your hands on him. I think if you do that, that’s when you’re giving yourself the best chance. If you’re not
physical with him and you basically don’t play football, then obviously he’s going to have his day and have his way
"But you’ve just got to try to be as physical as you can with him and stay under control so he doesn’t swim over you or dodge you left or right. He’s a good player. He’s going to do his thing, but we’ve just got to make sure we’re as physical as possible and limit his chances.”

Question is, how do we fare with Newton and Harris going up against Suggs and Dumervil? Our O-line is going to have their hands full and the Ravens are going to give us everything we can handle. I sure hope our D is ready, because I honestly see a rough time for our O.

Walter football have the Ravens as the pick of the month.

With Brown out I just dont see us establishing the run like we want. This Balty D is starting to round into form, and will be nothing like we saw against Manning week 1.

This game is all on Schaub.

If we can't run against their front, we're not going to be able to protect Matt Schaub worth a damm. Dumervil isn't very good against the run.... he's pretty good at rushing the passer. If we're running the ball well, they'll take him off the field.

Through two games in 2013, Houston Texans defense has forced three-and-outs on 16-of-20 drives. #Texans

Andre on Pollard: I haven't had a chance to talk to him. I wanted to after the game. I don't think he was intentionally trying to hurt me.

I just came across a somewhat disturbing Texans stat...........after 2 games, the Texans D ranks last in total tackles!
Yeah, ask Wade what he thinks about that.

“You’re getting into my pet peeve here about tackles because, when they show them in the league, they show this guy makes this many tackles, and Cushing’s 33rd in tackle or something like that,” Phillips said. “But those are press box stats, which really bothers me. We’ve played two games and they count individual tackles, which I think they’re pretty close on, but assists are so far off and the total tackles makes it look like one guys and another guy, it’s like Cush, he’s got two assists. He’s got more of that on our account.
