Roc Carmichael CB

I know he is no longer on radar screens of most Texans fans but I am interested if any think he can be "coached up" or will he fade into practice squad sunset? I liked him when he improved his forty time at pro day and when Joseph was hurt he got some time but that may have proved to be his undoing as he never seemed to get it going. Too much pressure too soon? I would like to think Texans CBs are solid but I can see Joseph being moved in 2014 due to his cap hit next three years and Harris needs to do or die this year imo.

Your thoughts?

I think he can get better. He has the physical tools.

What I don't know about is his desire, work ethic...ect...

Judging these guys from a distance is kind if hard when it comes to projections. All you really can do is evaluate what you see.

That's why teams investigate, poke and prod these guys before drafting them. There's more to it than just the on field stuff.

They kept him around, so obviously then think that it's at least possible to get something out of him.

I thought he played well in pre season last year, but was awful this year. I'm not sure what the deal was, but he sucked. I won't write him off though.

I think he's on the edge of being gone, gone, gone. He has to pick it up this year, or he'll be flipping burgers at Mickey D's about next August.

Our secondary is pretty strong at the top, and drops off the edge of the earth after that. I actually thought we'd be deep and talented, but watching McCain all preseason and on to game one has me worried. He looks like a shell of the player he was in 2011. Not sure what's happened.

Then you have Roc, who was just plain awful. Brandon Harris - a guy we invested a valuable draft choice in - still cannot find the field with a compass and a keymap.

AJ Bouye is an undrafted youngster with an unknown future. It would be fools gold to rely on him for 2014. He may turn out to be good...but that's like waiting on Jlo to give you a lap dance. The odds are low.

JJo (not JLo) may be too expensive to keep next year unless he has an all-pro season and so far, I'm not convinced. He's playing decently, but not like 2011...yet.

In short, we are screwed. :kitten:

Practices like Tarzan, plays like Jane...

Loses his technique & discipline when the lights are on.

He made some solid plays against lesser competition in the last preseason game ..... did the same things last preseason too ..... but that has never translated into regular season production. His technique has been solid against that lesser competition .... he hasn't been able to execute that same technique against higher competition.

I think what has been proven is that .... he can perform against lesser completion but isn't quite NFL caliber.

BUENO!
I think that as bad as McCain has been the fact that Roc (and Brandon Harris) can't seem to vault past him says volumes. If he can't put Brice McCain on the bench then he's about to be looking at life after football in the very near future.

I hear what you're saying. But I like that we are still looking & bringing in guys who can push guys like Roc down the list. Same thing we're doing at WR. I wish we had the kind of depth we know we need..... it's coming.

Meh... I had higher hopes for him.

That said, for a 4th round pick, and for the time being having him for some "depth" could be worse.

Roc must be producing on S/Ts or he wouldn't still be around.

At least that's what I'd like to think....

I am sorry but could you restate your position? All I saw was JLo, lap dance and screwed. :thisbig:

Yeah and it seems like he knows he is on the bubble and plays "up" for his last shot. It worked last season but did not this time. I was not expecting him to be a starter but a solid fill in.

I think a 4th rounder is less of a bust than the 2nd rounder with Brandon Harris. Not sure that Carmichael will ever be a solid NFL player. If he hasn't shown it by now don't think it will ever come out.

Roc showed promise and raw potential 2 yrs. ago and with Vance Joseph as our D-back Coach I really thought he'd mature into a good player. I didn't think he'd ever be a #1 CB but maybe a good #2, nickle, or at least quality depth but it seems that was wishful thinking. I trust Vance Joseph to develope players and if he can't get Roc to improve in 3 yrs. then I just don't think it's going to happen. The same might be true for Brandon Harris since he hasn't been able to beat out McCain at nickle, but I think Harris might have some potential at Safety if he doesn't work out at CB. It's really a shame because I had hopes for Roc, but after 3 yrs. it's time to make a clean cut and move on.

This is why I've moved CB up to #2 on my list of needs for the 2014 draft.

Whenever I think of players like Carmichael and Harris still being around, I can't get the picture out of my head of the Texans being asked to appear on "The Hoarders."

CB may be the most difficult position to play, which is why if you really need help in secondary investing early is a wise move. It seems like Texan secondary is playing unsettled, waiting for Reed to come aboard possibly? Continuity & scheme are very important for younger guys & its hard for them to get necessary reps. If Texans are hanging on to these guys its for a reason. When Roc gets a real shot down the road he will be ready, & justify his place on this team.

Harris made the team and is in his third season. KJ made great improvement his third but had "advantage" of playing time as a starter and playing with first stringers majority of time that Roc and Harris did not have.

You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one
When roc and Harris were drafted we were looking had the rookie version of KJ playing #1 cb on this team and Jason Allen had been starting #2, if those were wasted picks then I'm elated at least that we won't just pick up one FA at a position of absolute need and instead we invest draft picks too.

Had KJ not worked out, had JJo not worked out as a FA, these guys would have had their chance to get game time. Who knows where that would have left us.

Two insurance picks neither of which have been given up on 3 years later is not necessarily a terrible waste of draft picks. Plenty of people here have criticised for throwing all our eggs into one basket countless times before, plan A worked a charm so plan B seems like it was a pointless exercise.

I don't think either of these guys have had the opportunity to grow into NFL caliber players as yet and that has been due to strong improvement in front of them on the depth chart, well done to rick smith and Gary kubiak.

Except McCain has had more bad games than good in the last two seasons. Something's got to be done there & if we don't have the people on the roster to address it... something's wrong.
