Houston Texans @ San Diego Chargers. 9:20. 9/9. ESPN. **Official MNF Thread**

When San Diego is ashes; you have the Texans permission to die

Playoff appearances used to be the goal for the Houston Texans after the franchise's humble beginnings. Now, that's the expectation - and the goal is a Super Bowl.

While expectations for the San Diego Chargers may be considerably lower this year, they're anxious to hit the field with a new coach on the sidelines.

Brian Cushing and the Texans defense will try to spoil the Chargers' debut of a new offensive scheme under first-year coach Mike McCoy on Monday night in San Diego.

Playoff appearances each of the last two years were enough for a Houston franchise that went 55-89 in its first nine seasons. But after going 12-4 last year, the Texans aren't sheepish about setting the bar higher.

"I think it's obviously our main goal and our final goal, but there are a lot of steps that lead up to that," Cushing said of reaching the Super Bowl. "It's mentioned here and there, but ... there's a ton of steps before we start talking about the Super Bowl and it becomes a realization. It's one of those things that we have a lot of work to do before that's real."

Having Cushing back is a good start.

The fifth-year linebacker - who signed a six-year, $55.6 million extension with Houston on Wednesday - returns after tearing his left ACL in Week 5 and missing the remainder of the season. The 2009 Defensive Rookie of the Year ranked 15th in the NFL from 2009-2011 with 323 tackles.

"It's a chance to go back out there and really establish our role as a dominant defense," he said. "To help with that is going to be a tremendous feeling."

Even without Cushing for most of the year, the Texans still finished seventh in total defense, bolstered by Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt's league-leading 20 1/2 sacks. While the unit was weaker against the pass, Houston added a veteran presence by signing nine-time Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed.

Coach Gary Kubiak said it's possible that Reed could play in the opener after he was taken off the physically unable to perform list Saturday following his recovery from offseason hip surgery. The nine-time Pro Bowler will practice in pads for the first time Friday.

What I want to see:

Jump on the Bolts and silence their crowd early

This is something I can't stress enough. I've always...ALWAYS enjoyed how our offense starts most road games, so getting an early 7 could put some EARLY pressure on the Super Chargers.

Keep Foster upright by letting Tate party like it's 2011

No, Prince did not make a remix. However, Tate needs the rock. Get him some totes; maybe even feature him on a few drives. He can gash a defense, too. We've seen it before.

Return of the Cush

It is. This defense needs that major shot in the arm that it lacked without five-six. The run D should be improved, as well as Wade's blitz schemes and coverages on pass downs.

Have fun, folks. ITS BEEN 8 MONTHS.

Don't worry about one bad play; it's a LONG season. We're primed and ready to get our asses to Metlife Stadium, so don't forget to have yourself some fun tonight, and ALL SEASON! Oh, and take a nap; most of y'all will definitely be awake WAY past your bedtime. Ha.

Well, well, well! Time to get to WORK. First game of the year is finally here, fam! We got a tough task, as it's never easy to go on the road. As always each and every week, the goal at and is what, class? 1. and. OH. EVERY. WEEK! Nothing has changed. Let's show the nation what we can do, folks! NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR FEAR, SAN DIEGO; THAT COMES LATER.

What an unbelievably beautiful sight.

Welcome back Texans football - it's about time. I was starting to think that the NFL had forgotten about Houston after Thursday and Sunday.

It's finally HERE! Of course we had to wait until the final game of Week 1, let's hope they were saving the BEST for last! I'm pumped and psyched to be getting ready for a Texans game again! It's game day!!:fans:

The gameday thread, the cornerstone of any decent autumn!

Let's go boys, we're back, we're hungry and we have at least 16 games ahead of us! :)

It's finally gameday! So pumped for this game. It's been a long offseason and we have a tough schedule this year. Maybe the record won't be as good as last year but we should be much more tested come playoff time.

Anyways I'll be up late to watch the Texans win 31-17. 22 caries for Foster 108 yards and 2 tds. Hopkins catches 4 including a circus catch td. My boy AJ catches 9 for 134 yards just moving the chains.

Finally gameday - and then it is at the most aweful time. Here in Germany it starts at 04:20 am - and I am afraid thats too late for me... what`s better, to check the score first thing tomorrow morning or watching the dvr-ed game?

What I want to see:
OLBs take advantage of extra attention garnered by Watt.
Will the real Matt Schaub please stand up?
A passing attack that gets the ball across the marker in the air on 3rd downs.
Running backs: Do we have Shock & Awe(2011) again or Awe and Awe shucks(2012)?

DVR it. No one in Germany is going to spoil the Texans game for you.

Posted this in the ed reed thread, but it looks like he is out for tonight. Either way, we shouldn't need him. San Diego has a horrible receiver corps.

I just got a TV for my dorm (free of charge, courtesy of my cousin who no longer needs it) and I'll be staying in to watch this one. Too much homework to even wrap my head around but goshdarnit, it's the season opener.

Hyped. Today is going to be a long day.

Sure would be nice to go one game without a block in the back or any special team blunder.

Wishful thinking.

But I expect a win tonight. We can't lose to.....the Chargers.

Wish it wasn't starting at 10:20 here, but I'm still psyched to watch this game. I'm expecting a strong showing by some of the young guys (Merci, Hopkins, etc.)

Just moved to London in July and still trying to figure out if my local sports package is going to show the game. I get US ESPN, but it didn't show it on the schedule. I'm prepared to pay to watch online if I have to.

But getting up at 3am for the 3:20 start time... oy

I'll probably DVR this game since there is no way in hell I'll still be awake by the end of it. I'll be watching the start, but this is a work night and I need my sleep more than I need to watch a football game.

I don't know what it is, but i'm just not as hype as i normally would be for the opening game....

maybe it's b/c i know the team won't be at full strength....

maybe it's b/c i got my football fix yesterday watching all the other games...

maybe its b/c i watched the SF/GB game and saw that SF looks to have no weakness...

maybe b/c i didn't really see anything in the preseason that says things will be different for this team this year...

maybe b/c its such a late start....

Watt is about to go off. If the DBs can make rivers hesitate just a little watt could single handedly win this game I think.

Don't disagree with any of that, but I'm hype for the unknown. I'm not confident we will win this game but I'm excited to see them prove me wrong. Im excited to see the new guys. I'm excited to see how Schaub looks.

I'm going to be glued to my TV and as it gets closer to gamete is imagine you'll start feeling it more too.

For real it's way to late for me. Have to work tomorrow, so only score and highlights for me first thing in the morning.

I was nodding off by halftime during the Thursday night game.

I'll probably DVR this game and wake up at 4am to watch it before I go to work.

According to @JPSTATS, Texans were #1 Def in 2012 in limiting opp. QBs to lowest Comp % when bringing only 4 Def Pass Rushers

Chargers have no name WR's and a patchwork, at best, o line. Could get ugly.:jogger:

Opening game of my favorite football team takes priority over anything else possible, save for a life/death situation.

Be tired tomorrow. Just ****ing deal with it.

Quoting my own post, but had to say I was getting freaking pissed off that my ESPN feed over here was showing MLB games, before I realized that the Euro sport channel right above ESPN was showing the game. Was pissed. Then scared. Then relieved. Was going to be a long season if the only game I got over here was the Fox national game.

Good news is the game will be over about the time I head out the door to the train for my morning commute. Perfect timing!

Ah - you figured it out already - saves me having to point you in the right direction.

I never saw Eurosport with any NFL footage when I was back home - Monday Night Football was ususally on Channel 5 (a terrestrial channel).

I presume you know that pretty much all the games on Sunday are Sky Sports - although apparently Channel 4 have the Sunday Night Football game now.

This website should be more than helpful in figuring out where to catch the Texans each week. The free streams aren't too bad - please don't pay some ropey scamartist website, for streams that are availible for free elsewhere!

Game pass... never worry Again... :)

Game pass... never worry Again... :)

However, Game Pass does blackout games shown on Sky Sports - which would be a major pain in the ass. Coughing up the money for gamepass is bad enough - but then missing two of the premiere games of the week, because you'd have to get a Sky Sports subscription as well is ridiculous.

I'll be looking forward to this game, of course. I read somewhere, have no idea where now, that San Diego has some kind of bone to pick with the Texans. I think it was a San Diego homer article, though.

I hope the players know the Texans record with San Diego....

HTML:
1 9/15/02 L Houston Texans @	San Diego Chargers 3	24
2 9/12/04 L Houston Texans	San Diego Chargers	20	27
3 10/28/07 L Houston Texans @	San Diego Chargers	10	35
4 11/07/10 L Houston Texans	San Diego Chargers	23	29

5 9/09/13 ? Houston Texans @	San Diego Chargers 0 0

Now that the undercard is out of the way, it's time for the Texans to play!

I can't imagine what that would be.

If anything, Houston would have a bone to pick with SD, or Ryan Matthews specifically, for his post-draft comments.

Kick off here will be at 2.15pm this lovely spring Tuesday.

Will be trying not to lose an afternoon of productivity to the lure of the Texans.

Only if you want to Watch them live right ? You'll have those games available afterwards... I realise that that might not be what you want...

Strange enough, the NFL games being shown here in Denmark are shown on the Viasat Network, situated in the UK, but no game pass games are ever blacked out... Lucky me I guess ? :)
