Aaron Murray QB Georgia

revan

Waterboy
What a game he is having right now vs SC. Clowney has been a non factor as he and Gurley have taken over the game.

I like Murray ... Mobile enough , accurate enough , strong enough arm .... don't think he's a product of the system or talent around him like some others (AJ McCarron being one of those).

I wonder where he ends up being drafted ?!! Im thinking he could be had in the 3rd round .... but that is definitely subject to change pending how he finishes this season.

The thing with Murray is he isn't going to win you games by himself. If you have the pieces around him, he will do great things, but he isn't going to pilot a team by himself.

He could make a strong case for himself this year and *maybe* bump himself up to a first rounder. It will be hard to do that after falling to Clemson though. I personally, would not want to spend anything higher than a third on him. He has had incredible talent around him in Green, King, Lynch, and Gurley. Not to mention the amazing defenses he has had.

Aaron Murray is a Drew Brees clone. He will become a starter someday in the league, New Orleans would be a great fit for him to groom under Drew/Payton.

Physically maybe, but the thing that separates Drew Brees from the rest of the NFL is what's going on upstairs & that's not easily replicated. Some guys got it, most guys don't. Trying to find it in a 6'6" 220lb frame would be nice, but generally speaking... you take it any way you can get it.

I live in Georgia and that is the first time I have ever heard anyone compare him to Brees. Think of a more durable Matt Stafford, another UGA QB. Accurate, strong arm, and struggles to beat good teams. Only difference is Murray doesn't get hurt as much. I'm not sure if he would fit your team well by the time you want to replace Schaub, you will want a ton of weapons.

Took Brees awhile, in fact not until he signed w/New Orleans before he got it "upstairs" but I see similar resilience & mental toughness, he is unquestioned leader in bulldog huddle & has quick accurate release. He has demonstrated big time playmaking over & over in big time game situations. In four years as Purdue Boilermaker Brees passed for 11,792, 90 TD's, total offensive yards 12,693, completions 1,026, and attempts 1,678. Murray just beginning Senior season he is on pace in just two games 194.77 passer rating, 632 yards, 71.2 passing %, 4 TD's vs 1 TD. First three seasons he passed for 10,091 yards if he averages 316 per game thats another 3,792 yards or projected 13,883 yards. That is in SEC vs Big 10. No two QB's are exactly alike but I've seen enough from both to make comparable comparison, IMO.

Nice comeback by Murray & dogs today from 17-37 to 38-37 against Auburn, only to lose it on a potential INT tipped into a TD pass. He's got moxie.

I could handle getting him in the 3rd and going with he , Case and TJ . That would allow the Texans to plug other holes .

That's the way I'm leaning. Been thinking it for a while. The guys that are projected to go in the first just don't impress me enough to spend a first, and Murray might end up as good as any of them. I don't feel like any of them will come in and have a great rookie year. So if you're going to get a project guy, take him in the 3rd.

Get an OT or big NT or something in the trenches.

Aaron Murray done with torn ACL;LINK

ATHENS, Ga. – Aaron Murray's record-breaking college career is over.

Georgia sports communications director Claude Felton confirmed on Sunday that the senior quarterback tore the ACL in his left knee in Saturday's 59-17 win against Kentucky and will miss Saturday's regular-season finale against Georgia Tech, as well as the Bulldogs' bowl game.

Murray will undergo surgery to repair the knee on Tuesday, but will face a lengthy rehabilitation process.

He will not compete in a postseason all-star game -- Bulldogs tight end Arthur Lynch said earlier this week that he and Murray planned to play in the Senior Bowl in January -- or the mid-February NFL combine during the run-up to the draft, which begins May 8.

He posted to Twitter twice on Sunday morning thanking Georgia's fans for their support including one tweet that read, "Thank you all for the prayers over the past few hours. Gonna come back stronger than ever! Dawg for life. Truly love you all."

Murray suffered the injury with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter, when Kentucky's Za'Darius Smith slammed him to the turf after Murray's pass to Rhett McGowan deflected off the receiver and landed in Wildcats linebacker Khalid Henderson's hands at the Kentucky 2-yard line. Murray needed help from trainers to get off the field and immediately departed for the locker room without putting weight on his left leg.

Horrible way for this young man to end his season.

I doubt it. He suffers from the short bias.
People compare him to Drew Brees. He's worth a gamble in the third or fourth round, especially from a team like the Texans. We still have Matt Schaub under contract for a few more years. Unless we plan to release him - which would cost about $10 million in dead money over the next few seasons and be a total waste on the salary cap - why not go into 2014 with a veteran QB like Schaub, Case Keenum and Aaron Murray?

I suppose Yates will be the odd man out in that scenario. A healthy Arian Foster and Owen Daniels will help out a lot, whoever our starting quarterback is Week 1 in 2014. That would allow Aaron Murray to be groomed and be ready when it's his time in 2016 and maybe even 2015.

I guess a lot depends who the coaching staff is...
A new staff will surely say goodbye to Schaub.

So obviously I need help when it comes to evaluating QBs. I made the statement in another thread that I thought Aaron Murray should be in the conversation of best QB in this draft. I know I'm going to take some heat from that. & contrary to popular opinion, I don't just throw stuff out there to throw stuff out there, or for reactions, or anything like that. I just think differently than most.

I respect many of you for your take on football, the game, the people, the spectacle. Some especially for your insight on the Xes & Os. Some for your evaluation of players, some especially of college players. beerlover is definitely in that group of people I'm looking to for the scoop on the next crop of talent to come into the NFL. When he says....

I don't see how that is not a 1st round QB. Granted, the ACL is an issue, possibly push him down to the third round... but it happened in November & he should be ready to go for the combine... I would think, & ready for contact when the season starts.

But most of the posts in this draft are before the ACL & we're slotting him for the 3rd round. After the ACL, it's "well, maybe he'll get picked up as an UDFA"

I'd be thrilled if the Texans were to draft elite talent at other positions with our first two picks, or parlay those two into 4 day one starters, then get Aaron Murray in the third. I would have the same expectations of him as I would with any of the QBs taken in Rounds 1 & 2.

The guys who watch the draft have been saying this is going to be a good year for QB, there's no "Andrew Luck" but there are a lot of Mat Ryans. & from what I'm seeing, that's exactly what we have here.

Manziel, Bridgewater, Bortles, McCarron, Murray, & Fales..... I'd be happy with any of those six as I believe they have just as good a shot as any to be a franchise QB.

& I'd like to come away with Logan Thomas, but that's more of a project.

Found this article, thought I'd share.

NFL Draft rumors: Jaguars considering Aaron Murray?
Former NFL scout Russ Lande recently wrote, ”General Manager David Caldwell learned under Bill Polian and Thomas Dimitroff, who both place a ton of emphasis on film evaluation and college production.”

He added that ”there is some sentiment around the league that the Jaguars would prefer to select a pass rusher in the first round.”

If that is the strategy the Jaguars decide to go with, then it is likely that they will have their eyes set on South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney in the first-round. Then, Murray, Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo and LSU’s Zach Mettenberger could all be intriguing options on Day 2.

If that draft rumor is true that would be so awesome. We could literally see the 2 split sides of this forum in a battle 2x per year over at least the next 4/5 years.

There would be a winner and there would be a loser and obviously there would be blood.

What draft rumor ? Never mind.

I would rather be on the side of Watt and Clowney.

Murray does a lot of things well but he doesn't do anything great. To me, he fits in the Colt McCoy/Kirk Cousins/Matt Barkley department as far as physical skills go. I see a NFL backup QB. He seems intelligent, but not intelligent enough to make up for his physical limitations at the next level.

I don't like his size. His arm is meh. It's good enough for the NFL but what he lacks in arm strength he doesn't make up for anywhere else. He gets a lot of passes batted down at the line. He needs a clean pocket for any throw longer than 15 yards. He's accurate but not amazingly accurate. His ball gets where it's going but there is no zip. He plays in a pro style offense and makes good pre snap reads but takes way too long going through his progressions if his first guy is covered.

He has good mechanics. He has a smooth delivery, a quick release, and good footwork. He has good enough feet to avoid the rush and buy time. By all accounts he is a great leader and a film junkie. He didn't put any absolutely terrible games on tape this year but his performance against Vanderbilt was not pretty. His games last year against South Carolina and Florida were pathetically bad.

I have a 4th round grade on him. I think he is mentally and physically capable of being an effective backup QB, especially in a west coast system. I would not want him to be my starter. He appears to have a very high floor but a very low ceiling. He just looks average to me.

Murray... is a great leader and a film junkie....

Yeah, what I take away. I think he's a competitor who seems to have the mental capability to run OB's system but question the speed of decision making. Wish he was Ponder's size.

This kid is a very intriguing prospect. He's off of the radar to many fans, but you can bet there's not a team in the league, especially the ones like our Texans who need a QB in the worst way, who's not watching every move he's making in his rehab/recovery.
I'm telling you, there's going to be some legit QB prospects like Murray sitting on the Board at the beginning of the second day of the Draft, and just like the day before we can have any of them because we will be up to bat first again.
********
And then you hear about Murray off the field. His leadership ability. His high football IQ and ability to make pre-snap reads (offensive coordinator Mike Bobo estimated to Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he makes the correct call 90% of the time at the line). That he’s a film junkie…so much so that he went back to study his game against Kentucky (where he tore his ACL) immediately after being released from the Hospital.
Yes, he has some weaknesses. All quarterbacks do. His arm strength is good…not great. He can move when he needs to (57 yard run against Tennessee for example), but he isn’t particularly fast (which could be more affected by his torn ACL). Sometimes he forces throws into coverage, and other times he holds the ball too long in the pocket. I can overlook those issues – for now at least – after the way I saw him play, and what I hear about his work ethic. I don’t expect Murray to be a top round pick. But if you’re looking an absolute steal at quarterback in the middle of the draft, Aaron UGAis definitely the guy.

******
And here's a piece by a Houston radio guy about Murray which does nothing but help him in terms of his chances to make it in the NFL.

He's on my list of six. The knee is more of an issue with him than Mettenberger because running around is a bigger part of his game. But like you said, everybody's watching his rehab & if they sign off on him, he'll be a nice surprise for some team.

Baldinger: Aaron Murray to have best NFL career of 2014 QB class
"I like Manziel, but I think he's going to get hurt. I think Bridgewater is going to go to a bad team. I think he's the best quarterback right now, but the question was, who is going to have the best career," Baldinger said. "I just think a guy like Aaron is probably going to go to a team where they may not need a quarterback (immediately). Where he goes, there may be no pressure."
...
"Most of the great quarterbacks in this league right now, whether it's Manning, Rivers or Brees, they played a lot of college games," Baldinger said. "And this guy played as many as anybody in the country. ... When I watch him, he looks as good as anybody. He's got a good arm, he snaps the ball off, he's smart. He's probably going to get underdrafted in the fourth-round type range, where there is no pressure to play."
...
"I don't think Murray is better than Teddy Bridgewater right now, but that wasn't the question. If Bridgewater goes to Cleveland, or Oakland, those are terrible teams who will have a hard time winning right away," he said. "He's probably going to have to play right away. I was a big Joey Harrington fan, but he went to a bad Detriot team and he couldn't improve the team. They never improved around him. Blaine Gabbert was on a bad team."

I'm hoping O'Brien likes this guy, but I have no idea which if any of this years QBs the new HC likes ? I'm sure he'd be on the Board for us in the second round, but I think it would be risky to wait to use our 3.1 if we were to decide to move on Murray.

12 teams who could draft UGA star Aaron Murray
Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray is set to leave for Phoenix today to start the final month of his preparations before Georgia’s Pro Day on April 16.

“He will work with quarterback coach Terry Shea,” said Pat Dye, Jr., Murray’s Atlanta-based agent. “We think the first week he’s there he’s going to be working with RGIII (Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III).”

Murray tore his ACL against Kentucky on Senior Night and had surgery the following Tuesday.

“He’s been training in Pensacola with the Athletes’ Performance, but they also have the Andrews Institute down there with Dr. (Robert) Andrews,” Dye said. “We just thought the combination of the performance training and medical attention that he would get down there would be tough to match.”
...
“He’s going to be training out there for about 10 days and then he’ll come back to Pensacola and train for a little bit,” Dye said. “Then he’ll do the (Jon) Gruden Camp, the 5th and 6th of April on ESPN. Then he’ll go from there back to Athens to start really polishing up. He’ll start throwing with his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs at Georgia. He’ll be working with his Georgia teammates and really start honing his Pro Day workout.”

Here are the 12 teams that have shown the most interest in Murray: Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Arizona, Minnesota, New Orleans, St. Louis, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas, Oakland, Tennessee and Kansas City.
...
“There’s just a real positive buzz about Aaron with the teams,” Dye said. "He’s well ahead of schedule and he should be fine to start training camp or at some point during training camp. Whether if that’s the first day or two weeks into it. Aaron swears he’ll be ready by training camp, a full go.”
Murray met with teams at the Senior Bowl and at the combine.

“He’s very smart and has great football intelligence,” Dye said. “(He’s a) leader. He’s a very, very tough kid. When you watch the way that he got whacked around in the 2010 Auburn game by Nick Fairley, on what some wished were personal foul penalties, a lot of people don’t know that he had to get his chin stitched up during that game. He played, but from the second series on he apparently had a cracked sternum.

“Just getting to know Aaron, he has a passion for football. There’s such a positive energy about him. It’s really infectious and I think teams pick up on that when they are around him.”

The Falcons and the Jaguars’ coaching staffs worked the Senior Bowl. Murray was slated to play on the South team, but accepted his invitation anyway.

“I think it was a brilliant strategy for us to — Aaron and I kind of talked about it – go down and participate in the Senior Bowl just as if he was playing,” Dye said. “To take the time to go down there, go to the meetings, go to the quarterback position meetings, sit there and listen to NFL coaching and stand there behind the huddle and watch every day, he kind of immersed himself in NFL coaching and NFL culture.

“I think he impressed a lot of teams because he took the time to go down there for three days. That really, really resonated with people that he was so proactive about that and had such a sense of urgency about that.”

While Murray rewrote the record books at Georgia and in the SEC, there is the knee injury and the fact that he’s a half inch under 6-1. Most project that he’ll go in the third round or possibly as early as the late second round.

“In an ideal world, he’s not coming off an ACL,” Dye said. “In an ideal world, he’s 6-foot-4. But he’s not. We’ll just make the best of that. His height and his ACL are a little bit of a detriment to his draft status, but, all in all, I don’t expect much of draft fallout from the ACL. I just think there is a positive bounce from his production, performance and his intangibles. I think ultimately, he’ll end up going about where he would have gone had he not got hurt.”...

Didn't know Murray was going to get well enough, quick enough to participate in his teams Pro Day. Will be looking forward to reports from Athens about his performance on the 16th.

Saw a clip of him on the Gruden QB Camp. Out of all the other QBs, not named Manziel, Bridgewater or Bortles, he intrigues me the most.

Kid is tough, I didn't know after he tore his ACL, he stayed in the game and threw a TD. Damn...

Drew Brees esq arm and height. Might be a steal in the late rounds...
