Reports on Twitter are saying Cush has agreed to a long term extension.

YESSSS!!!!

ILB Brian Cushing has reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension with the Texans.

ILB Brian Cushing reaches an agreement on an extension with the Texans. He was in the final year of his contract.

Adam Schefter @ AdamSchefter
Texans LB Brian Cushing is going to sign
a 6 year extension today.

Would have liked to at least go half way to the season to see how his ACL reacts. But anyway, good move.

I'm happy we got him before he had a comeback season. He would have then commanded much more money. Plus Cushing is the leader of this defense. Great move.

I wouldn't, it's not like these contracts are guaranteed. Texans hold all of the leverage before Cushing proves he's still a BAMF. :)

Next on the list... lock up Watt!

Texans restructure Andre Johnson contract4 2013. Was 2make $10.5M n salary. Now Johnson will make $5 million n salary w/ $5.5 million bonus

P. Schrager ‏@PSchrags 1m
Spoke to JJ Watt recently. Asked him why this team is any better than the 2012 one. Looked at me like I was crazy. One word. "Cushing".

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL 42s
Texans wanted to get Cushing done cause GM Rick Smith has a policy against contract negotiations during regular season.

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 2m
Cushing extension is A Big Deal. #Texans don't like in-season contract negotiations. Have done them right before season w/ a number of guys.

Rick Smith getting work done.

Lol. Even if we wanted to lock up JJ, no way would his agents agree to an extension at this point. JJ's next contract is going to be so massive our great grandkids will be paying the bills.

As for Cushing...meh. We will see.

That's a surprise, I would have thought they'd want to see much more from Brian before inking a new deal, I got to think they (the Texans) got him at a discount because they are assuming considerable risk here. We will wait and see what the actual numbers are ?

Rick has been pressing to get this done before the season started, as his policy is no contract negotiations during the season. Glad it worked out.

Good thing the agent works for Watt, & not the other way around.

This tells me that Texans are ok with Cushing' health & his possible productivity this season far outweighs risks he may not heal and be the Cushing of old. I think I'd have waited a bit longer but if they are convinced it is great to lock him in. Now if Mays or Sharpton or both can have good season another concern of mine is eliminated.

Uh, either way, it doesn't matter.

Watt is not stupid. He knows how the game works. Even he knows that he'll likely command more money if he waits another year or two to re-do his contract. Other teams would sell everything they owned to get a JJ Watt. Don't think he doesn't know what.

Don't let his "aw shucks" public face fool you. Despite his "nice guy" demeanor, he's shrewd and calculating.

Glad to see this. I have my doubts as to how long it'll take Cushing to get back to form, but I have no doubts that he'll get there.

There's no guarantee that Watt will have another season anywhere close to what he had in 2012. There's also a big chance that he'll get some kind of injury that will prevent him from ever doing so again....... just getting one year older may hurt his chances.

If the Texans were to offer him an extension today that he felt was fair he'd be silly not to take it.

Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.

If you don't sign him, and he injures himself again, he won't be worth breaking the bank for by another team, so he can be signed again without a lot of trouble. However, if he stays healthy, the defense is instantly better with just his mere presence on the field. I'd take the chance and sign him before I know. Uncle Rick did a fine thing here. I'm becoming quite the Rick Smith fan.

Didn't they pretty much do the same for Schaub last year? Extend before the knew how his injury would impact the entire season?

I think this is a good move. It tells the team where the FO's priorities are by signing a proven defensive leader before he had to prove himself.

Just to clarify.. when I said "next on list, lock up Watt". I wasn't referring to locking him up "this offseason". That isn't going to happen as we don't have the cap dollars and we don't need to lock him up right now. I was just saying that he's the next core player (and you can only afford so many) that needs to be locked up, whenever it may happen.

Yeah guys like Arian Foster and Duane Brown ironically did. JJ Watt had a huge year as we know but once he has another big year he will have proved himself worth what his contract will be.

Sigh. Here we go. You're being argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative.

Correct, tomorrow is promised to no one. Correct, he could get injured. Correct, just getting once year older can hurt him (though I doubt it, in his case).

But that's the roll of the dice you take, both as a player, and as a franchise. If the Texans DID offer him an extension, he'd be foolish TO take it at this point, in my opinion.

Point is moot. Under new CBA rookie contracts can not be extended until after the 3rd year is complete.

Contract overall worth higher than Willis but guaranteed is $8 million less than Willis. make up some of that with no state income tax.

Only time will tell whether or no this was good decision. I hope we have a healthy Cushing through the season.

Im surprised we didnt sign greg oden.

Actually, Reed's contract really didn't break the bank all that much. It was structured pretty favorably towards the Texans, if I recall. If I'm wrong, someone correct me. I don't remember the details of Reed's numbers.

Congratulations @briancushing56 on the new deal. Scratch our conversation from today, I think we'll let you cover the dinner bill on Friday.

Was worried if Cush got to free agency Jerrah would make a run at him. He was a life long Cowboys fan. odd being from Jersey but I remember him saying that.

Can Greg Oden play football and is willing to sign a non guaranteed contract (unlike what they have in the NBA)?.. If he can and is, sign him up?

I can already tell it is going to be an absolute joy to read all of your posts. Try to keep your optimism reigned in though.

Nice all around signing, he's averaging 9.16M per year based on the contract numbers reported. 9 this year is high, but 9 in 2016-2018 will be low granted that the NFL keeps increasing revenue at %20.

In alternate reality universe maybe. Here it was after the 1st game.

Schaub threw for 266 yards and one touchdown during Houston's win in the type of quietly effective performance for which he has become known. And then Schaub celebrated the win in the best way possible -- with a pile of cash.

Not trying to take this thread off topic, but you know Watt personally?

Crazy as it may sound, Im somewhat indifferent. On the one hand its cool we have Cush locked up, but then the looking at it strictly as a football/business move Im not so sure I like the trend of just handing out a bunch of money after injury. Could it be a "sorry you got hurt for us, here's some money" situation? Sometimes I just wonder why the team doesn't employ the franchise tag more often, and show a little patience when a player comes back from major surgery.

Im hoping Cush shuts me up and dominates, but the weird voice in my head is asking me "what if he gets hurt again, or never fully recovers"?

Oh well, Dance with who brung ya!
