There is No Safety in Numbers Anymore

Of course, we have Manning, but.........

Reed is out, and I'm not encouraged by his need to seek outside "help" in his rehab.

Swearinger, although promising, is still a rookie.

Pleasant is almost a rookie, and now has suffered an undefined "knee injury."

Keo had question marks following him from the past, and now has suffered a thigh "contusion."

Re. Keo's injury:

Quadriceps contusion or a ‘cork thigh’, as it is commonly known, is the result of a severe impact to the thigh which consequently compresses against the hard surface of the femur (thigh bone). This often causes deep rupture to the muscle tissue and hemorrhage occurs, which is followed by inflammation.

Contusions are classified according to their severity:

Grade (and I have listed typical return to play......although, the return to sport period from all grades of contusion injury may sometimes be significantly reduced with good early injury management practices and assessment by the medical team)

1 (Mild) A player experiencing a mild contusion will usually be able to continue playing however may feel some soreness after cooling down or the following day. The affected area may be tender to touch, the ability to stretch the muscle may be diminished slightly, and the strength of the muscle may also be adversely affected.
Return to play – 2 to 3 weeks.

2 (Moderate) A moderate contusion may prevent a player from continuing; however minimum stiffening/swelling may be experienced with rest. The player may experience some pain and the affected area will be tender to touch. A player with a moderate contusion of the quadriceps will often walk with a limp and range of motion will be diminished by up to 50%.
Return to play – 4 to 6 weeks minimum.

3 (Severe) A severe contusion will be characterized by rapid onset of swelling and obvious bleeding. Both swelling and bleeding may not be able to be controlled. Movement loss will be severe and difficulty bearing full weight on the affected leg will be apparent. The affected area will be very tender and muscle strength will be diminished.
Return to play – 8 weeks minimum.

Harris played some Safety last night, and I expect him to be converted there full time now. Outside of the hit he was penalized for he actually didn't look that bad. I think he projects better at Safety than Corner in my opinion.

The general opinion seems to be if he's going back to his specialist, it means Ed Reed *won't* be ready for week 1. It could mean his rehab had a major setback, but with the Texans being tight lipped on timetables nobody knows for sure what expectations are on him.

Considering the situations with Keo and Pleasant, I could see the Texans trying to get a vet safety after cuts. He'd likely be a JAG (just another guy) but at least someone with some experience. I'm thinking Swearinger could be forced into the SS role though, Manning goes back to FS, and we then need a vet safety for the dime role (though Harris might be able to fill that role for a period).

We have lots of capable safeties and a lot of money tight up at that position already. I know we`re hurting a bit right now and who knows when Reed will be able to contribute, but right now I wouldn`t want to spend any more money here. Manning, Keo, Reed, Swearinger, Pleasant are all at least decent, Harris might be good at that position as well. I don`t think that we won`t be able to dress 3-4 of them come gameday.

If we spend money to improve the roster it should be for te OLine - RT still seems to be a mess, and our guard play is very shaky...

The hit he got penalized on shouldn't have even been a penalty , he hit the guy with his shoulder .... It wasn't even that big a hit.

Adam Wexler ‏@awexler: Kubiak said they got some good news on S Ed Reed, that he may be just ahead of schedule. (Reminder, there is no known schedule) #Texans

So he might be just ahead of some imaginary, unknown schedule. I feel so much better.

I lean towards agreeing with you on that, but the result is what it is. I really want to see him play quite a bit on Sunday at Safety.

I am not worried about the S position. All I have to say is thank God we recruited and signed Manning/Joseph instead of Asomugha.

Not worried about Reed. Can anyone name a single time Reed did not closeout a season for the Ravens when things mattered most? I cant find it. Reed is a Famer and will be here down the stretch and in the playoffs when we need him the most. And Swearinger should get better as the season goes on.

This may all be true and I hope your right about Reed. But keep in mind that all players given enough time and injuries.........reach the end of the road.

I don't have a rep as being the most optimistic fan amongst my friends considering this city's history, but you leave me know choice! Reading your posts re injuries sometimes makes me feel like the whole team is about to keel over and die Lol. No offense of course. :)

That's pretty much CnD's take on any injury to Texans player. Doom and gloom is mostly the order of the day.
