Travis Johnson on sports radio 610

I know some people don't like Travis Johnson the player, but if you get a chance check out Travis Johnson the Radio Host. He is Really good IMO. REALLY good. He's a smart dude, has a good delivery, entertaining and I suspect a lot of guys here would agree with his takes.

I think he is 10x better than Seth. My favorite thing he said today was saying Andre is like a Crane on a construction site. Large presrnce looming over everyone...doesn't make a lot of fuss and always there ready to work.

But yeah...if you get a chance, check him out.

I enjoyed listening to TJ, but he's not even close to Seth. But, I reckon everyone has different tastes.

He's been on 1560 a couple of times and I thought he was great and funny, too!

Making waves now because he called Tony Romo a loser. He's one to talk, biggest bust of a draft pick in our history and that's saying a lot. He needs to check himself before he goes around calling anyone a loser.

While not his brightest moment, c'mon? Really??

The number 1 overall pick of the 2002 draft class disagrees with the bolded.

One is still in the league and at least did something for us. The other was traded for a 6th round pick and then released a year later from them.

Eh, he had to play behind a bad oline. :hides:

:sarcasm:

I wouldn't mind checking him out, but he's on SR610. That station left my presets a long time ago.

I think Carr sucked horribly and of course would've rather have had Peppers in hind sight but at least I can understand the pick PLUS he's still actually IN the NFL.

Johnson, on the other hand, also sucked even more horribly. Did nothing as a pro and we could've taken Aaron Rodgers, Derrick Johnson, or any other of the bad asses that were available.

IDK how anyone could think that Johnson wasn't a bigger bust than Carr but to each his own.

Anyways, Johnson should not be calling ANYONE in the NFL a loser, he was one of the biggest losers who ever played for us.

I don't know the Tony Romo stuff, but TJ just said a little while ago that the texans screwed up by taking him over Aaron Rodgers.

But you shouldn't blame TJ for the team picking him. I don't get that part.

Seth cracks me up all the time. Yeah, he's unpolished, but that's part of the appeal. He is not some pro radio dude, but a retired pro athlete that is not sure where the line in the sand is half the time. I expect him to get into some sort of FCC trouble at some point because of it.

N.D. and Greg in the trenches still the best IMO

TJ

I really enjoy their show when I get a chance to hear it. I pretty much learn something every time I listen. And they talk football the majority of the time instead of pandering with 'guy talk' radio, which bores me to death.

Ya' know...I like Seth, but I just think TJ is better.

Not knocking Seth, I just think TJ has been damn good so far.

I have not heard TJ, yet, but based on your opinion I will definitely check him out. Thanks for the heads up.

Seth Payne is very sharp, and fortunately for his listeners he can articulate what he knows which is a lot about a lot of different things that go beyond football. And he dishs it all out with an irreverent sense of humor. But his inside knowledge of the NFL is the real payoff.

TJ was a six year starter. Both Okoye and Carr were worse, and to this point Mercilus. Probably Babin as well.

Furthermore, TJ made 10 million in his career. Romo just got a $100 million contract for having the same number playoff wins as Matt Schaub. Let that sink in a minute.

Regardless, it's irrelevant. You don't have to be a great player to have an opinion, or Joe Montana would be the only critic.

To me Seth Payne sounds like your typical 610 radio host BUT Travis Johnson calls it like he sees it and just keeps it real. 610 was definitely missing that.

Well then I guess he just shouldn't be on the radio since it involves being critical. Guess the stationed disagreed with you.

Guess so. I don't listen to 610 anymore anyway, 790 all the way for me. Any station that employs Josh Innes obviously doesn't know what they're doing!

And TJ was not a 6 year starter, might want to look up those starts there noxiousdog. He was a bust and is more of a loser than most NFL players, and certainly Romo.

still makes me angry. we needed and were taking derrick, there was a 50/50 chance he'd fall to us if we were lucky, and everybody knew we'd grab him if he was there. but nooooo we out-smarted the draft and traded back a few picks, just enough to miss our player and reached on a tough to predict defensive lineman.

Seth? You mean Mr. Giggles. Dude is a child on the radio 30% of the time.

Who doesn't like Seth? :spit:

Seth Payne ‏@PayneNFL 37m
Fans of bad teams will find these NFL bags wholly inadequate.

Ah, you're right. He didn't start for the Chargers.

On the weekend, I caught a segment with TJ on there. The part where he was discussing the Riley Cooper incident (beginning at the 11 minute mark) was great...........especially where he discusses the "rehab" part of it (beginning at the 12 minute mark).

I finally was able to dig it up. http://houston.cbslocal.com/2013/08/05/travis-johnson-on-mad-radio-watt-is-like-shaq-on-the-football-field/

Hadn't heard that. Will have to give it a listen. Thanks for posting.

I think it says something that we actually have disagreement..... & so many candidates for this.

Texans biggest bust..

  1. David Carr
  2. Travis Johnson
  3. Amobi Okoye
  4. Bennie Joppru
  5. Jacoby Jones
  6. Frank Okam
  7. Brandon Harris

I can't put joppru on that list. It wasn't because he sucked ..he just was in the tub.

Jacoby jones...time will tell if we blame the player or ST coaches here.

Tony hollings Charles hill come to mind as busts

LOL...ok, so yeah..TJ is a personality on sr610 now...

I had a feeling this would turn into a bust thread. :king:

He was pretty entertaining. I like his explanation on being a "bust". He said something along the lines of, "You say I only got 3 sacks in the pro's? Well, I only got two sacks in college and then I get drafted IN THE FIRST ROUND? That ain't on me, that's on the front office." I lol'ed at that.

I liked Tj....... he was one of the only players here with any attitude.

We drafted him out of Florida State as a 3-tech... a UT...... but we put him on the nose in a 4-3, or lined up on a Tackle in the 3-4. It would have been interesting to see what Wade could've done with him, playing where Antonio is now.

Of course, that may have been due to his weight. He was a svelte 290 at FSU, but I don't think he ever played for us under 300lbs.

Texans biggest busts

6. Frank Okam
How can a 5th round pick be a bust? And I thought you liked Brandon Harris?

I guess 3rd round picks or better are players you should get something from. The Texans got zip from Morency and Molden, so they would qualify. Caldwell was a disappointment. I think everyone else has been covered.

I do like Harris, but if I were to make a poll, I'm sure some folks would say he should be there.

Okam..... 5th round notwithstanding..... I expected a lot from him. My br in laws are huge UT fans & I heard so much sht about Okam it ain't funny. He was my darkhorse.... lemonade player that never amounted to anything.

I thought the Travis Johnson pick was horrible when it was made, and expected very little out of him. Does that make him not a bust?

I don't understand why people have all of this anger toward someone like Travis Johnson. Was he supposed to acknowledge he was overrated in 2005 and turn down a first rounder's contract? Being a poor football player doesn't automatically dictate that you have uninformed football opinions. Besides that, it doesn't take a winner to know that Tony Romo is a loser.

If you want to be angry at a commentator whose out of his depth, remember that the NFL Network still pays Charley Casserly for his draft analysis.

^^^ This.

TJ seems like a cool guy. It's not really his fault he was drafted too high. He was what he was.

I blame Casserly.

Casserly laid some eggs as all GMs do in the Drafts, but he also drafted Andre Johnson & Mario (instead of Reggie Bush), DeMeco, OD to name a couple of his picks.

Strange how the majority of his good picks all happened when he was working as a lame duck GM with Kubiak.

Casserly had 1 good draft.

And we can thank Detroit for picking Charles Rogers ahead of AJ . We dodged a bullet there

I was irritated when Sports 790 changed their line up to include Jay Mohr in the mid day slot. I hate national radio. We are big enough to have all local radio.

I don't like 610, but I guess I'll start listening since we have some crap national program in the midday.

790 just blew up their entire lineup (which I liked) and
it is an absolute mess now..

I'm listening to 610 just to avoid Mohr. Perhaps the
station actually needs to hire a survey group and
do an impact study before such drastic changes are made.

I can't believe someone credible would have actually told
them this was a good move..

I won't listen to Mohr, and while Lance is pretty much tied with Pallilo for my absolute favorite local talk show guy, pairing him with Adam Clanton has me seriously considering switching to Mike and Mike. Clanton sucks.

I can't stand the 610 homers in the morning and afternoon, but I highly recommend the mid-day show with Mike Meltser and Seth Payne. Meltser isn't a homer, and Payne brings a veteran's perspective.

Maybe give it a shot one day.

yeah pallilo is still my favorite. and of course they cut him down to like 3 hours. And when I'm driving home, Matt Thomas is still on the air which I could take or leave.

I haven't heard Clanton enough, but the LZ and Pallilo combination was the best radio I've heard. Wish they'd bring that back because it was all serious sports talk.
