Why all of a sudden....

Is our defense getting to the QB?

Does anyone have a clue where this is coming from? I also noticed opponents are getting hit alot harder than ever. The way I see it is this:

Marcus Coleman can pack his bags, and all the safeties on the team need to fight for their spot. Lewis Sanders is okay but will lose his job next year, Buchannon needs to accept less money or he is gone. Dunta is safe.

The MLBs will have to compete for their starting job but Polk is the leading candidate to keep his. The OLBs should all be fighting for their starting positions and Orr needs to see the field more.

The DL is improving, Walker is getting in the backfield more and maybe we should try to see if Johnson can play better than Robaire.
 
ORR!!! I've really enjoyed watching this kid from the first chance he got at playing time. He's aggressive and quick to the ball. (maybe he's not the reason for our D getting to the QB, but he's definitely one of them!)

I hope he starts next year.
 
The reason we are getting more pressure is more aggressive playcalling on first and second down. The blitzes are varied, but still pretty predictable to a good team. It is our third down playcalling that is a joke. Marcus Coleman is terrible and I hope Parcells enjoys him next year. Sanders and Buchanon dont cost that much and they provide depth. Sanders is mutli functional cause he can play FS. Polk is a UFA and may not be back. Robaire and Johnson have been pretty solid eventhough Robaire takes some plays off. Payne has been a workhorse with the double teams. Would like to see Johnson out there more, but he does not handle the double teams well.
 
I believe because both Jonathan Ogden and Orlando Pace didn't play in their respective games.
 
it's real simple...besides the fact that both those two pro bowl tackles didn't play you have the fact that our defensive line is relatively healthy...our linebackers are simply playing like there is nothing else to lose...haha...because there isn't...so what if they get a personal foul roughing the passer penalty...it might be better than not getting to him and him completing a 30yd bomb...everyone is playing mad on defense and it's about damn time

My thoughts:

1. Team is getting more used to playing together. Less injuries too. The D started looking better up front when Walker came back, IMO.

2. Offense is staying on the field longer. It gives the D more of a breather when the O can do something other than a 3 and out.

3. We are playing easier competition than we were earlier in the season (with a few exceptions). Our past schedule is ranked hardest in the league and our future scheduleis ranked 31st hardest in the league. It makes a difference.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. That's the whole reason in a nut shell. We are playing a remaining schedule of lower tier teams...that we still can't win against, but it makes us look not as pitiful as if we were playing the elite ones again.
 
The defensive line is improving? Isn't this the same line that has been a sieve in regards to rushing defense?
 
We are playing worse teams with injury problems in their lines. Nothing too deep to ponder imo.

This is another guy who has looked good when given an opportunity, but
his opportunities were few and far between. Then they benched Babin early in
the year and hey, he's got some playing time and ends up with three sacks yesterday. Isn't that a game day record for the Texans by an individual ?
Atleast we know we got something here, and he won't slip away unnoticed
like Foley. And I'm not sure what we've got invested in him, buts its nothing like a first day draft pick ?
 
ORR was a sixth round pick and is a RFA this year. He can be signed to a low tender or mid-level tender in order to get either a 6th round or 4th for him. I doubt we will sign him with a long term deal with new coaches coming in. He will likely get the low tender and have to fight for his spot. If we are running a 3-4 he is a lock in a 4-3 he is gonna have to battle because he is really undersized.
 
So Orr might not be a Texan next year? That would suck, IMO. Dude just has a fire in him that I don't see in some of our other players.

When it comes to our OLBs, so much depends upon whether we stay 3-4 or go 4-3 next season. If its the latter, don't know how Orr would fit in there ?
If they stay 3-4, they got Babin whether or not they want him, but they might have to choose between Orr and Peek as their other feature OLB. This is another player whose fate with the Texans probably hangs with the decision on Capers.

If we go to a 4-3 next year there might be some very disappointed people on this board (from the Bush, offensive tackle, TE, etc. camps) because we'd have to invest heavily in the defense to get 4-3 personnel. The worst part is even if we remain 3-4 we still have a lot of problems on the defense.

I'm glad I get to comment about the draft/FA acquisitions rather than be responsible for making them this off-season.
 
Good point, Runner. We'd have to invest heavily in D-linemen to make the switch to a 4-3, and they don't grow on trees. Almost as tough to find powerful D-linemen than it is to find dominant O-linemen.

I've got no problem with the 3-4, per say, but it just can't be this prevent cover 2 that offers very little pressure and almost no run stopping. We seem to have a decent foundation of 3-4 linemen, and we've got the potential of a great LB corps. Of course, it's our coverage that is the biggest weakness.

A low tender garners the same round pick as the original draft spot. A mid tender gets a 1st in compensation and a high tender gets a 1st and a 3rd. Shantee Orr was an UDFA so expect at least a mid round tender on him if they want him back.
 
Mid tender sounds like the right thing to do IMO. If he's picked up by someone, another 1st rounder wouldn't hurt, but I doubt anyone does it and we get to see what he can do for a year under the new group. Might cost us more in the end, if he lights it up, but that's just how the mop flops sometimes.
